I Love Your Smile ... But..........2005-11-09
I have a soft spot for beautiful woman especially if they can play the Saxophone. That has to do with my childhood obsession with a popular manga called "Orange Road", but anyway, I have to admit that the reason I bought Kaori Kobayashi's debut album intially was of that reason.
Anyway after buying the CD, the quality of the CD was better than I anticipated. In this album, most of the track are new material except for the cover of "Nothing's Gonna Change my Love for You". In this album the artist plays the saxophone and composed a few songs. There isn't anything entirely fascinating or new, though I do find the album to be bright, fun, and somewhat catchy - which is well reflected in the track "I Love Your Smile" which has an extremely catchy hook to it. Most of the songs are standard fusion jazz pieces with a little of DJ influence in some of the more upbeat tracks which is well defined in the track opening "Solar". Most of the other songs are mostly listenable, though not what I consider to be a masterpiece. Though I would recommend this artist, I want to point out that the album seems to lack some polish like some of the older and more established saxophone artists out there.
If you are looking for a bright enjoyable and easy to listen jazz album, then this is one option to consider, otherwise if you are a serious jazz fan, then there might be something other albums higher on the pecking order.

See this band live! Listen to their music........2005-10-27
I happened to stumble in on this band by accident and ended up leaving the club purchasing 2 of their CD's and am verry pleased and am looking for more like it and them.
A notch above the competition...........2005-07-11
Emerging from the flood of Montreal bands, Kobayashi have proven themselves to be a cut above the rest with their groovy rhythms and hypnotic jazz melodies. Their first album (They've previously released two demos) is a brave foray into the territory of acid jazz blending elements of hip hop, trip hop, soul, funk, electronica and fusion jazz into a warm, robust package. Whether you're looking to dance the night away or hang back and chill out with some friends (With drinks aplenty of course!), you'll find something to like here.
These guys and gals set out to prove they could conquer the world, and this first album is a succesful first step in their sure to be long and arduous journey. This group deserves respect and critical acclaim. What better way to show your support than by picking this disc up?

Sounds Great in the Car!.......2002-09-03
This is what contemporary jazz should sound like. It takes years of solid musicianship and hard work to get to this level (who knew?). My most sincere gratitude and congratulations go out to the Trio.
It's extremely important to maintain and improve upon known and proven traditions and genres. Too many musicans now are either cooking stuff at home on synth, or are trying to create a new style or genre of music. This album is more fuel for the jazz fire. May it live forever.

Listen three times before deciding that you love it.......2000-09-27
I've seen this band play 50 times at least and it's the live aspect that gives jazz that essence that draws people to dark bars filled with smoke . This album doesn't have that. It's got a band that plays live in the studio recording songs that end up lasting more than ten minutes once the solos are finished. That was why at first I was a bit disappointed with the album. I knew it wasn't all that there was to them but then I kept listening. It's a great album. The bass, an instrument that is so difficult to hear clearly on almost any recording (except early Zeppelin), is an equal third to the output of the music. Standouts include the title track "Exotic Places" which uses a strange key and actually sounds like a party in an Arabian Opium Den, if things like that ever existed. Another song is "Jagg", one that exemplifies funkiness to its jazziest grit without leaving the listener standing on the wrong foot wondering where the song. There are two covers on the album, Sting's "Walking on the Moon" and Clapton's "Change the World" and both are very good, especially the Sting song. It sounds like they recorded it at 2 in the morning, slow and withdrawn but somehow that's what sucks you in. It is a great jazz record. It's not Coltrane, it's not contemporary but somewhere it lies in the middle, clinging to both. It's worth the money and you'll enjoy it once you realize that this is not a rock band doing their best, it's a jazz band constrained by the epic nature of a recording.
This TRIO has Exotic Talant.......1999-08-29
NEW BEGINNINGS is where this CD got the BREATH of FRESH AIR review. The tunes compliment each members talent:
Ron Kobayashi exhibits his talent on keyboards electronically as well as highlighting it on the acoustic piano. His love for the music is displayed not only in the unique and inspiring rendition of Sting's Walking on the Moon, but in his originals as well. Remembrance is very enjoyable melodically.
Baba Elefante utilizes the fretted, and fretless bass to convey his awesome technique and talent to critical ears as well as the recreational listener. Baba plays with an energy that the trio runs with. His talent is displayed in the ballads as well as the funky rhythm of Crawfish Hygiene and Funk the Monk... Got to check these out!
Steve Dixon's rhythmic flexibility keeps the group tight (when it's called for, like on JAGG) and ... let's RON and BABA GO, when required, like Exotic places. Steve's consistent & unpredictable style, mixes well and make's the trio complete.
The Trio on Exotic places displays a wide range of talent from Ballad, to Jazz, to Funk. This CD is a MUST HAVE item. Hearing them live is a musical event everyone needs to experience too!
Outstanding compositions and a tight performance.......1999-06-08
This gifted trio consisting of Ron Kobayashi, one the most fluid and talented keyboardist around, and bassist Baba Elefante bringing a color and sound to bass playing totally unsurpassed, and rhythmically speaking, drummer Steve Dixon is the best. Original compositions by Ron and Baba are sparkling and exciting.
