Ageing hippy?.......2007-05-14
My 17 year old son, who was born 20 years after Woodstock bought this CD after he heard "On the road again" at a friend's house. The CD is great and brings back memories from the 60s and 70s
This Is Sure A Can Of Heat.......2007-03-21
I am a Chicago Electric Blues man and was brought up on that kind of music. When the white bands decided to start covering black muscic I was some what dubious. I remember when Canned Heat first came out. I was immediately impressed with their style it was almost like listening to some of the better blues artists at the time. This compilation has assembled a ton of good ear stuff. I particulary liked .......... "Dust My Broom," (almost an Elmore James sound)" Bullfrog Blues," (that cooks)" Rollin and Tumblin" (a traditional black blues song also). They have one of their John Lee Hooker tracts "Whiskey and Women" which is awesome. This sucker even has a Little Richard combo on it.....what more can you ask! Well you can ask for the two songs they are most noted for "On The Road Again," and "Goin Up To Country" ...awesome baby..but the icing on the cake to me was "Let's Work Together." Buy it, try it and you will like it. Joliet Jayke the Bluze Brother would not steer you wrong...now go order it so you can gettin some "Heat" in your soul.
A great musical flashback!.......2007-01-07
It had been over 30 years since I listened to a song by Canned Heat. I liked them somewhat in the 60's and early 70's but they were by no means one of Wow, I forgot how great they were. These guys could play some music. Maybe my tastes in music have matured as I have, I am now 54 yrs. old but I just really appreciate the talent that was Canned Heat. Kick back, and flash back, you will be glad you did.
Great Canned Heat Compilation and Great Sound.......2006-09-20
This CD is great! It contains the very best and most comprehensive collection of Canned Heat singles. And, the recorded sound is extraordinary...much better than the original releases in most cases. If you like Canned Heat, whose legend continues to grow, then you will LOVE this CD.
The Bear is There.......2006-07-19
This album is by far the best compilation out there, if you wish a good solid concise overview of one of maybe a half-dozen bands who could make po bedevilled blues lovers like me and my friends git down on our knees and cry! real tears! because they were (and remain, dead or alive) one of the absolute best blues bands ever. The respect these guys had for their material is evident in every song, and they practiced long and hard, obviously, to get the sound they wanted. Buy this, at any price between ten and fifteen bucks, I'd say, it's worth it. You might want to pick up "Future Blues" as well. Contrary to what some revisionists now say, that was the LP we decided was the ultimate blues album, back in the day. Noone would never top that. (After awhile on our knees, weeping again)...I've haven't heard any better since.

This 1971 collaboration between primal one-part-Delta/one-part-Detroit singer-guitarist John Lee Hooker and Southern California blues revivalists Canned Heat works in large part because all parties involved are a little off. Hooker, the most unsystematic of the major bluesmen of his generation, isn't a good fit for disciplined players; rather, he requires sidemen who play by feel. In harp player-guitarist Alan Wilson, the Crawling King Snake found a particularly sympathetic foil; sadly, Wilson died shortly after these sessions were completed. Roughly divided into spare, gritty Delta exercises and full-on boogie stomps featuring the full band, Hooker 'n' Heat is surely one of Canned Heat's crowning moments, which isn't saying that much. But that it stands as a milestone in Hooker's oeuvre is quite a statement indeed! --Steven Stolder

Great blues union.......2007-05-28
In 1970 the blues-rockers Canned Heat got this, as it would turn out, great idea in bringing blues-legend John Lee Hooker into the studio for a close collaboration. The album was planned as a feature for John Lee Hooker in that respect that half of the album would mostly feature his solo stuff, where as the other half would be together with the group.
The amazing thing is that it brings the best out in John Lee Hooker, as he would deliver some of his most inspired performances ever - that also maybe due to the "Heat's" enormous respect for the man. Canned Heat had proved themselves to be among the most serious and properly best of the "white" American bluesbands with original compositions, especially by the late blues-harp `wonder' & rhythm/slide guitarist Alan Wilson - and by bringing in a slightly more `rocking' approach, they popularised a music that, at the time, seem to have faded away from the limelight (maybe some remembers hits like "Going Up The Country" or "On The Road Again").
Even more wonderful is the fact that the inspiration is mutual and Hooker's duets with Wilson's soulful harmonica, later in the first half, is literally sparkling - there is a fantastic communication between the two. But also the second half with the band is really smoking and I personally really like their bassist Antonio De La Barrada for his inventive and driving playing, but no doubt that Canned Heat fore and most was a group - a unit, and that really shows and because of their open, raw and honest nature, they musically fits so well with Hooker and makes him sound so great.
Canned Heat's lead-singer though, Bob "the bear" Hite, respectfully stands back and solely dedicates himself as a producer together with Skip Taylor. Unfortunately this also was to be Canned Heat's last album with Alan Wilson, who prematurely died soon after these recordings. A loss they properly never really overcame and their best work is also to found before this tragic event occurred with albums like: "Boogie With Canned Heat", "Live At Topanga Corral", "Living The Blues" and "Future Blues".
Many have acknowledged this work to be some of the best Hooker ever delivered - I for one agree.
I felt so good, I would boogie just the same..........2007-04-15
As much as I love the 1989-1997 albums that closed out John Lee's amazing career (Healer, Mr. Lucky, Boom Boom, Chill Out, Don't Look Back), 1970's Hooker 'n Heat is a true crown jewel in the legacy. Just as Johnny Winter's pure sympatico hand of support guided Muddy Waters through his late-career Blue Sky albums, Canned Heat provides the most solid and driven backing I've heard on a JLH album. John Lee is in full-blown Crawling King Snake mode here...on this album he's not a kindly "elder statesman," he's a dangerous man, and if you approach his flame, you WILL get burned. The late Heat vocalist Bob "The Bear" Hite limits himself to co-producer duties here, so the musical dynamics come from Al "Blind Owl" Wilson (his final recording), guitarist Henry "Sunflower" Vestine (get ready for the thoroughly insane 11 minute "Boogie Chillen No. 2"), Antonio de la Barreda on bass and Fito de la Parra on drums. The first 9 tracks are John Lee solo. Wilson joins tracks 10 and 11, and the full band backs the remaining 6 tracks. Make no mistake about it...you WILL get cold chills when Hooker bellows "Alan! Alan! Blow your HORN, baby!" on "Let's Make It."
Cookin Baby - Hooker' n Heat.......2007-03-20
If you want an analytical analysis and disection review of this music, skip to the next review. If you want a review from some one who has been listening to the blues since the late 1950s, read on. "The Hook" is his magical self as always. He goes from "havin Delta mud squeezin between his toes" to full out "boogie chillun." What more can you ask. "The Heat" is a great white boy blues band and for this compilation added a touch of harmonica. My idea of the ideal blues band song would have everything that is in this compilation but maybe a touch more of piano or harmonica....This sucker is soulful and it cooks. I love the spoken line "let's boogie." The best covering of black blues music by a white band I have ever heard. Add John Lee and you have got a winner. Buy it, play it, enjoy it and you will never regret the purchase.
A seminal blues album and John Lee's best...............2005-08-28
I wore a hole in this vinyl record simply because it was definitive blues at its best.
The interaction between the legend John Lee Hooker and Canned Heat was incomparable, confirmed by Hooker's patter between tracks.
The rawness is still there but with that added polish. At one point Hooker suggests they have enough for a "triple album" which would mean "triple money". A shame it wasn't a triple album, it records both Hooker and Canned Heat at their pinnacle.
If you want to hear Blues music played in its purest form buy this album, it doesn't get any better. John Lee Hooker is at his articulate best and it is surely a definitive blues album which recorded a magic moment in time. Al "Blind Owl" Wilson's harp playing went hand in glove with Hooker's playing and he says between tracks that Wilson must have been listening to his records all his life, it truly is inspired playing. A tragedy that Wilson overdosed shortly afterwards, he was at the height of his musical powers.
The production is excellent and did justice to the musical experience.
This is one of the classic albums of modern times. If you like John Lee, I believe he produced no better album than this, Canned Heat stayed in the background and let him do his thing, whilst providing the best backing band he had ever experienced.
An absolute gem!!!!
Hooker n' Heat Boogies, but isn't perfect.......2004-09-16
Hooker n' Heat is a great collaboration between white blues players and the Hook (in my opinion, the best blues singer of all time). The recording is raw, stripped down and meaty. Reverb wasn't even added to John Lee's vocals or most of the instruments for that matter, which makes me think of After the Goldrush by Neil Young, also a profoundly stripped down record made the same year. Because of its simplicity, this album sounds very different than the Hook's famous late 50's, early 60's work.
My only complaint is that some of the album's songs should have remained out. The album could have been a great single disc. Most of the first disc is John improvising, getting warmed up to boogie the next day. Aside from "Burning Hell" "Messin with the Hook" and a couple of others, these first songs sound like exercises rather than organized material. The album probably should have been arranged as a 12 song single disc and still kicked butt, but I imagine Heat wanted a double album, and had to work with what they had in the end. Hook even tells the producer to take "nothin' but the best and later for the garbage."
Nonetheless it still stands as an awesome collaboration. And I do enjoy the eccentric rambling between tracks, it gives insight into John's personality. Too bad Alan Wilson committed suicide right after recording this record, Wilson and the Hook could've made great records for years. Long live the Hook

Album Description
Another Canned Heat / Friday Music Remasters Series from the vaults and archives of Fito De La Parra, "Live At The Turku Rock Festival" showcases this hard-working boogie band at their peak of their post- Woodstock fame. Led by the big man Bob Hite, The Heat cook up over an hour of rock, blues, country blues and hit songs from their catalog of albums.
Recorded in Finland in 1971, the band was touring to support their worldwide hit album "Historical Figures and Ancient Heads." With a new line up featuring Joel Scott Hill, Antonio De La Bareda, along side founders Hite, De La Parra, and Henry Vestine, this band could do no wrong.
Check out the classic hit "Let's Work Together" with Hite's incredible vocals and Canned Heat's tight chemistry on stage. This band really was the consummate blues band of the era and it shows throughout this live performance.
A healthy dose of tracks from the aforementioned " Historical Figures and Ancient Heads" album are in order as " Hill's Stomp", " Long Way From L.A" and others are featured on this disc.
No Canned Heat album is complete without a boogie, and here you get "Canned Heat Boogie" This lengthy jam is seeing its first release in North America, and this rarity is just one of the many fine tunes on this fine live recording.
Remastered from the original concert tapes, this authorized edition of "Live At The Turku Rock Festival" is just the right album for your blues, rock and boogie needs....Rock On!

Back From Bluze H'ven But I Lost My Socks On The Trip!.......2007-07-03
Remember "ole Jayke" is an old time Delta Blues, Chicago Style Black Electric Blues man..it is tuff for me to get into the white bands but I for one had my socks knocked off when I listened to this cd. I was blown away by "live Heat." "The Heat" have to be one of the few "white boy bands" who can create that Chicago Sound. Heat live cook and jam better than on a studio work. "She Don't Want Me No More" sounds like a Blues festival circa 60s song...lawrdy shake your money maker! "Let's Work Together" justs jumps at you, grabs you and gets you rockin and never lets go. Start clappin your hands chillun on this song. They get into a major guitar jam....rock me baby. They immediately go into their other big Heat "On The Road Again" which is hot but they play it pretty straight but do go nuts with knock down guitar solos. "That's All Right" is like a "Wolf" song with out the growlin..dig da harmonica. "Hill Stomp" didn't do much for me...too much like ZZ Top. "From L.A." is a great 50s type dance tune..bobby socks and all. "Watch Yourself" is a typical Heat Blues tune....they work it and work it....jam city....I could see John Lee on this one .."too bad he ain't." Heat loves to boogie (Boogie With The Hook) and I think ZZ Top must have stole The Heat's Beat. In the middle of the "Boogie With The Heat" the drummer goes absolutely insane music wise and must do a mega minute drum solo...lawdry have mercy on me...these boys like to cook and boogie. Before they leave Turku, they get down and dirty on "Late Night Blues." This song would be right at home in Chicago in the 50s. Forget who is in the band....let the music move you and get you into a groove where you just zone out on some good blues. Just remember "Joliet Jayke" try's to speak from his soul to all you good blues lovers out there.
Boogie On--Canned Heat!!!.......2007-04-27
If you are looking for a great sounding live album from Canned Heat, than this is the one. This was recorded right after Blind Owl Alan Wilson passed away and the bands was starting over. They added guitarist and vocalist Joel Scott Hill to the band and this was his first concert with them. He fits right in with great vocals and guitar support to the sunflower-Henry Vestine, who is great in this set. Great guitar solos, long versions of their songs, and great vocals by the Bear-Bob Hite--despite the fact that the Blind Owl just died. The stereo on this recording is great and Hite plays a mean harp. Long versions of On the Road again sung by Hite with great guitar and some blues songs sung by Hill, who went on late to join the Flying Burrito Brothers for a few albums--if you can find his album LA Getaway I would purchase it--sounds great with LA Session players. GET THIS ALBUM FROM CANNED HEAT-GREAT SONGS-GREAT SOUND-LONG SONGS_JUST GET IT!!!!!!!!

Mildly Interesting.......2006-07-23
I really wanted to like this album and I do really like about three of the songs, but the rest didn't do anything for me. Maybe this is just not my style of music and it's not fair for me to be reviewing the album, but I have listened to it several times and own a copy. In spite of the untimely deaths a long time ago of two of the important band members (Alan Blind Owl Wilson and Bob Hite), the band is still around, kept going by Fito de la Parra. I still think this rates 4 stars, even though it didn't thrill me that much.
Water Turning To Wine.......2006-01-12
Interesting band from the deph of the Woodstock era, and way short lived, due to the deaths of Blind Owl Wilson and Bear Hite what a tragedy. Anyways lets not bum you out too much with this review, they had some funfilled blues in this set, perfect driving song like On The Road Again, or a cool little peaceful jingle like Let's Work Together, from an anthem to Woodstock Going Up The Country, or to the stay away from the evil drugs Amphetamine Annie. This album really packs the punch of pure blues and jugband pleasures. I would recommend this for any 60's rock and roll lover, and would also recommend the Woodstock album that has them performing Change Is Gonna Come, that's a good number too.
THIS ONE IS TIGHT, SCORCHER BLUES OF THE PSYCHE-SIXTIES.......2005-10-26
Remember these dudes. You really probably do from some point in your life. Not everything these guys ever did was exceptional, but they have left their mark in pop culture.
This highlights the original CANNED HEAT from the late sixties but without all the hippy dip
This album is somewhat short, but this is ok, because its a solid album. I think I need to break this one down....oooh, shake it baby...
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: This is a very rich song. You should recognize this as one of the two WOODSTOCK theme songs, I know it was on the Pepsi ads during WOODSTOCK 94. I used to think it was kind of goofy, but really it isn't. The lyrics are cool and the music is very full, a really great tune to play at the bar. By the way, it is not the one that WILLIE NELSON sings, I'm not a hokey fruit loop.
SAME ALL OVER: Sing along blues, good people everywhere you go. Maybe good at the bar when everyones good and tipppp-ssy.
WORK TOGETHER: As hippy as this album gets, and it is still cool for a pop song. These guys weren't hippies, they played music for hard livin. Hard edgy vocals make this tune a triumph.
BULLFROG BLUES: Good message, its all a nice way of explaining something that he caught from his girlfriend.
THIS WAS: This takes us back to the woodstock sound, a slow groove here, not as popular as the former, but you will like this number.
BOOGIE MUSIC: very funky... I dig... put SOME WATER on it!
GOING UP THE COUNTRY: This IS the WOODSTOCK theme song. Tell me you don't know it and I'm willing to bet you are humming it in your head right this very moment. I like it.
AMPHETAMINE ANNIE: Somewhat of a story song, the hook you'll never forget, "YEAH, SPEED CAN KILL YOU TOO BABY!" The man never sounds happier than when he's telling people about the line between drugs and death. The first time I ever heard this song i was zipped up on something- and I loved every word!
ROLLING AND TUMBLIN: Blues cover, version sixthousand and seventy two of this particular standard. Good though.
To end you get the REFRIED HOCKEY JAM which is like a band soul stew, where everyone demonstrates their chops over a nice lengthy jam, its a good close out.
If you like groovy bluesy classic rock, this album is sure to please- I wouldn't look any further, this one keeps it straight, the larger hits packages have to much "hits" to keep it playing out. This little package is just enough.

Hard-luck band gets kicked in the can!.......2003-09-04
One of the best American blues bands from the late '60's, Canned Heat could have even been greater and more successful, except for one thing: they were the original hard-luck boys. On the verge of breaking out after their first album, the Heat was busted in Denver and had to sell the rights to their songs to get out. (To this day, drummer and current bandleader Fito de la Parra relies on live work, not royalties, to help him make ends meet.) Plus, even though most of their songs were sung by the fabulous growl of Bob "the Bear" Hite, their two most famous numbers featured the vocals of Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson. Now, "Blind Owl" was a musical genius, the best harpist in the world according to John Lee Hooker, but some fans feel his falsetto vocals are an acquired taste. Their most famous song, "Going Up the Country," with the equally famous flute solo, might give the casual listener the expectation of a completely different style of music; say, the Grateful Dead at their most tribal, rather than a hard-core blues-boogie band. Wisely, "Blind Owl" is limited to three numbers on this disc (all are excellent). Luckily, "the Bear" is at his most playful and fun-living on his numbers, with "Same All Over," "Let's Work Together" (his only hit as singer), and the morality tale "Amphetimine Annie" the standouts of his seven songs. The album closes with the wonderful jam "Fried Hockey Boogie," featuring a segment from each instrumentalist. Here, Henry Vestine's guitar work will blow your mind, sending it out to orbit the solar system before bringing it back gently to earth. The band would never sound better than this. Sadly, the final reason Canned Heat never achieved the success they deserved is that both Alan Wilson and Bob Hite (and, much later, Henry Vestine) would die too young from their self-destructive lifestyle. Thankfully, they left a pretty good legacy for a band that was kicked in the can by life once too often.

As good as it gets on CD.......2007-04-01
The definitive 'best of' for this band is the double LP "Portrait", but, as that's not available in a digital format, this is the next best choice. While known for the Woodstock anthem "Going Up the Country" and the hit "On the Road Again", these guys are blues musicians at heart and love to play amped up Southern Delta boogie (they famously backed John Lee Hooker for a time). Good stuff.
great cd / great sound.......2006-01-07
I bought this CD a few years ago when the best 3 lps from Canned Heat were not available on CD ("Boogie with Canned Heat","Living the Blues" & "Halleluja"). It was the closest "best of" to get the most songs from these 3 lps. I was not that familiar with the other songs by Canned Heat. But after receiving this CD, I found the earlier and later stuff are great too. You can now get Boogie with Canned Heat, Living the Blues & Halleluja on CD. But this CD does a great job to also cover the best of the rest of Canned Heat songs. Highly Recommended
good music, better memories.......2004-03-13
I hadn't heard this stuff in decades, and if anything, it was better than I remembered. Very cool California hippie/biker blues band. Clearly repectful of the tradition, these guys were good players (fine harp and guitar) and evolved a unique sound. I'm surpised (like another reviewer) that they left off "Fried Hockey Boogie," but I guess this disc is meant to emphasize the straighter blues stuff and downplay the 60s wierdness. Too bad, if you ask me. Still, a fine, bluesy party disc. Recommended.
Boogie On.......2003-04-11
I first heard Canned Heat when they released their second album, "Boogie With the Canned Heat" and I was hooked for life. They were the best "white boys playing the blues and boogie" of all times. Alan Wilson was a great blues songwritter and guitar player. His singing was also very good. Larry Taylor was, and is the best bass player around. He never gets the recognition he deserves. He turns up everywhere, even on Tom Waites albums. Bob Hite was a great and underrated blues shouter and master of ceramonies. De La Para was as solid as they come on drums, and still is. The real standout of the original lineup was Henry Vestine. A forgotten standout blues guitar player. Hendrix used to go see him play, and John Fayhe sings his praises to this day.Unfortunately these boys lived the blues and personal demons got the best of three of them. Wilson, Hite and Vestine have all departed this life, but they left behind some great blues and boogie for us.Canned Heat continues to this day, but to realy experiance them, you must hear the early band. This is a good sampler of that band. Due to drug and substance abuse problems, Harvey Mandell plays guitar in the band in place of Vestine on a number of songs. He is also a great, and forgotten, blues guitar player. Also, check out one of their early live albums for a feel of what they were all about. I hope that one day they receive their due. They have certainly paid their dues. In the words of Bob Hite, "Don't forget to boogie!"
Great, but if you liked this band go to their website!.......2002-09-17
This is a great compilation double CD with many of their best and some rarities. BUT if you like this band and think they deserve the royalties from their music, which they have never gotten!!!,... Yes, you can get those hard to find albums too. They still make good new music too!

My Personal Favorite.......2003-04-11
This is a great album. Even without te bonus tracks, it stands up well to the test of time. The reviews previous to mine tell alot about this forgotten jewl. But, they fail to mention that guitarist Henry Vestine was one of the all-time best white blues guitar players. Jimmi Hendrix used to go see him play to learn something from his style.More of a boogie and blues style than blues purist Michael Bloomfield, but just as good. Young music fans and guitar players would do themselves well to become more than familiar with Vestine's fine work (Bloomfield is also a must).I have been listening to this album for over 30 years and I am still not tired of it.
COLLECTORS BEWARE OF PROBLEMS WITH SOUND QUALITY!.......2000-06-23
COLLECTORS BEWARE OF PROBLEMS WITH SOUND QUALITY!
This CD is a gem it is true BUT SEVERAL CUTS HAVE MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH THEM ,THEY ARE,"SONG # 5 == "TURPENTINE MOAN",Folks this cut was RE mastered with three times the bass of the other cuts on the CD,think of yourself standing next to the BASS amplifier to get an idea of what i mean. THE Cut # 9 ="MARIE LAVEAU" WAS TOTALLY DESTROYED WITH HUGE AMOUNTS OF BASS AGAIN .TOTALLY BASS DRENCHED SOUND HERE FOLKS ! Lastly is the CUT # 12 "BOOGIE MUSIC",WOW THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN SO EASY TO FIX WITH A LITTLE "EQ"(BASS TONE CONTROL).
"A TOTAL CLASSIC TOTALLY RUINED !
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THESE OLD CANNED HEAT ALBUMS TOP BE REISSUED ALSO BUT THIS CD IS A TOTAL DISSAPOINTMENT !
AKARMA should REMASTER it and put IT OUT WITH "NEWLY-RESTORED " VERSION STICKERED ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE CD.
ON THE POSITIVE SIDE IS AKARMA'S REMASTERING OF THE OTHER CANNED HEAT CLASSIC "LIVING IN THE BLUES", WOW ! TALK ABOUT WONDERFULLLLLL ,PRISTINE MASTERING WITH NO OVER "BASSIFICATION"!
I HAVE WAITED FOR 30 YEARS TO HEAR THIS ON A GOOD SYSTEM WITH NO POPS OR CLICKS ,Now AKARMA has brought this wonderfull music back to life and current for future generations to enjoy.i wish i could say this about the "BOOGIE WITH CANNED HEAT"ALBUM BUT IT SIMPLY IS NOT T R U E ! ALL We can hope is that AKARMA WILL GET Their "A=KARMA" GOING IN THE RIGHT PLACE ! AND RE=PLACE THE "BOOGIE WITH CANNED HEAT ALBUM,WITH A NEWLY DONE VERSION THAT IS SONICALLY PLEASING AND CORRECT!
fulfills the need to boogie.......1999-11-04
it's been soooo long since i've heard this complete set of music let alone the bonus tracks! i had the lp when it was first released and later the cassette(which is minus turpentine moan). i had been searching for over 6yrs. for this on cd. go amazon! now i can enjoy this great music that is a must for any heathead.
This is the most consistent blues/boogie album of C.H........1999-10-07
I bought this album 31 years ago. I never found it back in the store, nor on vinyl, neither on CD. So this has come to an end by this import cd release. I do not own the cd, so I can't say anything about the extra tracks. But I can about the albumtracks! The, at first sight, simple songs become hooked in your brain. Every song is a jewel. The contrasts in the band are very well balanced; the polished Al Wilson, the Bear Hite, the distorted guitar of Vestine and the fabulous rhythm tandem Fido and the Mole. The excellent recording quality of this album must be mentioned. The production is clear and heavy; listen to the bass! Above all it's the voice of Bob Hite, that gives every song, even the sad ones, a grin! My favorite song is My Crime. This song contains everything what I have said about the album before. It is not a plain blues, because of its unusual tempo and funny intro. But try dancing (arms spread; like old greek men dance their sirtakis all alone), it works! Have fun with this record! B.T.W. Is it not possible to release the original album recordings on CD? Because I like the atmosfere of the album (I do not need extra tracks...)

Customer Reviews:
I Think I Was Robbed.......2007-07-16
I am use to listening to Chicago Electric Blues but have been on a Canned Heat kick lately. This looked like a great addition. Well I think I was robbed. It started with "Killing Floor." The Wolf would be so upset with this poor imitation of his signature song. I can't say much about "I Love My Baby" except the music drowns out the lyrics. "All Night Long" just seemed to drag on and on. "Future Blues" does boogie and that what "The Heat" does best and they continue boogie with "Holland Boogie" but you can hardly hear "The Bear." The worst recording of "Let's Work Together" that I ever heard was next - sound is awful and they cut it short..a tragedy because this is one of their signature songs. I am not a fan of "Hill's Stomp" but it was one of the better songs on this cd. "That's All Right a.k.a. "Whose Loving You Tonight" by Jimmy Rogers is really butchered on this recording. Give me Elvin Bishop's version any day. One of their most famous songs "Going Up To Country" was just awful..man was I disappointed. "Long Away From L.A." was about done normally but the sound still stunk. "Pay My Rent Boogie" sure sounded a lot like Z.Z. Top. "Big City" - I could hardly hear the singing - awful. "Utah" - no comment because I don't know what it was supposed be but it was horid. The original "On The Road Again" is still the best and this was just pure puke - fast forward through it. "One More River To Cross" was not bad but why the horn section...sounded more C&W..not Heat stuff. "You Am What You Are" - no comment it was so bad. "I Need Some One" - "The Bear" doesn't have the voice for this kind of song - nuff said. "L.A." Town - stinko. Baby Ray Charles and The Raylettes would cring on hearing this cover version of their song "Night Time Is The Right Time." I was hoping that "Shake, Rattle and Roll" would really rock - give me Big Joe Turner's 1954 version - actually I will take Big Mamma Thornton's version if I could find this...at least they use the original lyrics. "Black Night" should be played by a Mississippi Delta Blue band not The Heat. The two set cd finally came to an end with "Dutch Boogie." It was 22 minutes of boogie and show casing. This was a terrible listening experience. To top it all off my stinking jewel case came with 2 cd's and the plastic divider just plain broke as soon as I touched it. I usually give The Heat a 5 but "I Think I Was Robbed" so I give this a generous "2."

And Not A Minute Too Soon!!!.......2003-02-03
This is the disc that started it all. Originally titled "Canned Heat" this is that first Liberty album on CD. It was somewhat ignored because it didn't produce a hit single; "On The Road Again" was from their second album. So what we have here is some good old down home country blues and it's half standards like "Evil" and "Rollin' and Tumblin'" and half group compositions like "Bullfrog Blues". Al Wilson only sings on one track but his harp wails thoughout the disc. This is really a one of a kind affair because starting with the next album the band couldn't resist going a little pyschedelic. The sound on this one, by the way, is clear as a bell.

Canned Heat don't forget to boogie.......2005-03-06
New York had Paul Butterfield
LA had Canned Heat
In the mid 60's, there was an explosion of blues based bands. Paul Butterfield, John Mayall, etc. and Canned Heat. The big difference was that Canned Heat hit the top 40.
Canned Heat was started by blues collector Bob "Bear" Hite and "Blind" Al Wilson. Both had spent their youth searching out old blues 78s and foraging through the American past to collect the music that would tell who were we were and who we could be. Canned Heat both shouted Past and Future blues.
The first album had mostly blues covers but with Bob Hites commanding vocals and Henry Vestine's guitar + Al Wilson's off center vocals made it well nearly obscure. The second album, "Boogie With Canned Heat" had a top 10 hit with "On The Road Again" and they played a date almost every night from SF to Germany.
"Hallejah" is the fourth album released by the Heat. After "Boogie", they released "Living the Blues", that had another top 10 hit, " Going Up the Country", again an Al Wilson vocal. But mostly, "Living the Blues" captilized on the long jam "Fried Hockey Boogie" that was a favorite concert piece that was an FM favorite.
But! "Hallelujah" is a fine stand alone album with such Heat favorites as " Time Was", "Same All Over" and the great '60's anthem "Sic' Em Pigs". By this time, though, Canned Heat seemed to be obligated to do an extented "Boogie". Only lovers of retread will be happy with that kicked tire.
This CD`has also the first greatest hits complipation released on LP, " Cookbook". It does not have later songs like, "Work Together", etc.. but it does have the advantage of not sucking out loud like every other Canned Heat CD. + the quality is so much better that no other release compares.

forgotten classic.......2004-03-21
Here is an overlooked album by an overlooked band. This was recorded in the late sixties and still sounds vital today. Despite the absence of ace guitar player Henry Vestine this record still demonstrates all the strengths of Canned Heat. Harvey Mandel,no slouch himself, steps in for Vestine and carries the day. In fact,I could not imagine anyone else on " lets stick together " In addition to that, this contains some of Alan Wilsons' last recordings, including the prophetic " my time ain't long ". For anyone interested in the blues and 60,s American blues this and any early Canned Heat album should be in their collection.

forgotten classic.......2004-03-21
Here is another terrific record by a much overlooked band. Despite the absence of ace guitar player Henry Vestine, Harvey Mandel,no slouch himself, steps in and does a wonderful job. Though his guitar sound is very different from Vestines,he fits in seamlessly with the band. In fact, I could not imagine anyone else on " Lets stick together." The rest of the band is in fine form and this record contains some of Alan Wilsons' last recordings, including the prophetic " My time ain't long ". If you are the least bit interested in blues and late 60,s American blues, than this and most any early Canned Heat album should be in your collection.
