5 out of 5 stars My Neighbor Got This LP For My Bday!.......2007-07-19

Again: I'm reviewing the LP! Not the recent Rhino release. Mike's 1st with Salesman. Davy & She Hangs Out. Mike again with the Door Into Summer.Mike(w/Mickey & his Moog Sythesizer with Love Is Only Sleeping. Next: Davy's Vaudeville bit called Cuddly Toy. The 45 Words ends side 1.
S.2 is a dull Davy tune called Hard to Believe.Mike's country twanging is featured in Hangin' Round. Peter does a brief goofy spoken Pig thing. Then an extended version of Mickey's Pleasant Valley Sunday. Mick again (with the Moog, Man!) in Daily Nightly. Then Mick "MC's" Mike in Don't Call On Me. Ending with Star Collector! "Bye Bye! Bye Bye"....

5 out of 5 stars I wanted to write a nasty review, but it's really superb .......2007-07-16

This deluxe edition of Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd, is so nicely done (much like the first three in this series), I honestly couldn't write anything nasty. It's been presented with love and care.

The sound quality is great in both mono & stereo. It's very similar in sound quality to the Beatles Capitol Records releases that just came out recently. The bonus material is entertaining, as well as strong, I also loved some of the out-takes I'd never heard before. The booklet is also really good, with lots of rare photos and the in depth story of the making of this album.

The overall packaging is very classy. It makes me hope that The Beatles get this kind of treatment through Apple records, or my favorite band, Deep Purple get this sort of stunning re-packaging from Rhino.

I grew up on the mono versions of the Monkees albums, all the way up to their fifth album "The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees" in April 1968, so I was really thrilled to see that mono finally made it to CD. I've always thought that the mono mixes of this album were better overall, giving an overall impression of a heavier rock band sound with added reverb. As for the stereo mastering, it's beautiful. Overall, they've done a wonderful job on these deluxe discs. Let's hope the next two albums (released in mono & stereo) get this same kind of royal treatment.

Sure they seem to be milking the Monkee-cow, but when it's this strong, milk it baby. Next up, The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees?

5 out of 5 stars pleasant valley tuesday.......2007-07-11

my copies of the deluxe versions of HEADQUARTERS and PISCES, AQUARIUS, CAPRICORN & JONES LTD. turned up today and they were worth the wait. both albums are special in their own way. HEADQUARTERS, the monkees' third album, featured the band playing their own instruments (augmented by their producer, chip douglas, on bass) and has a strong country rock/garage band sound, thanks mostly to the influence of mike nesmith. it's a fun, charmingly "homemade" album, but the guys decided to make PISCES a compromise, using ace session players (while still contributing plenty of guitar/keyboards/percussion of their own).

the music on this album is an eclectic mix of country/rock/pop/lounge/psychedelia sounds that blend surprisingly well. producer douglas, under-appreciated at the time by the band, helped maintain a unified overall vibe, despite the stylistic shifts from track to track. my personal favorite songs are PLEASANT VALLEY SUNDAY, WHAT AM I DOING HANGING 'ROUND?, DAILY NIGHTLY, THE DOOR INTO SUMMER, LOVE IS ONLY SLEEPING and, of course, CUDDLY TOY...but the whole album is ear candy from start to finish (even the much-maligned davy jones number, HARD TO BELIEVE).

the deluxe edition of this album features a bunch of bonus tracks, including many previously unreleased mixes. i found myself prefering some of these to the originals (i had similar feelings listening to the also-included mono mix of the entire album).

andrew sandoval's liner notes are well written and helpfully informative (well, not a whole lot of new info for my jaded ears, but still nicely presented). all-in-all, i thought the whole package was a great tribute to the original classic. i can only hope and pray that the folks in charge of the beatles' upcoming re-mixes can be half as responsible and fan-friendly as andrew.

long live the texas praire chicken!

On Aquarium, Aqua were "Barbie Girls"; now they're "Cartoon Heroes." A slight change in context for their second album, but, essentially, it's business as usual. And let's not forget that Aqua do this slapstick kiddie-pop thing with a lot more panache than their shamelessly novelty Euro-goons peers. The relentless zaniness of Aquarius may sometimes be cloying, especially those too-chirpy chipmunk voices on "Cartoon Heroes," but there's no denying that this is a pop group that really lives this pop lark--shaved-headed frontman Rene really does talk in that comedy growl and frontwoman Lene really doesn't wear more than a stretched scrap of PVC whenever she leaves the house. This makes Aquarius quite likeable, actually--especially on the slapstick-trance workout of "Around the World," which even manages to squeeze in a brief geography lesson. --Louis Pattison

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-05-09

If you like the usual flare of Aqua's music, this will not disappoint. The techno beat is great for dancing, cleaning the house, or just having fun. My kids love it!

5 out of 5 stars Aquarius RULES!!!.......2007-02-16

I am glad Aqua made a album "Aquarius" and a song "Aquarius" because I am a Aquarian as well. My birthday is in January.

4 out of 5 stars A funny album!.......2006-11-10

Well since i was a kid, the only song that i heard of aqua was her classic "Barbie Girl", but i was always curious about this group; I thought they were just one hit wonder group, but i found out that they are great musicians, with lots of great songs, and touching lyrics.
My favorite songs of this albums are cartoon heroes, freaky friday, but above all, aquarius!!! this song it's simply fantastic.
If you wanna have some fun, and then, to have some fantastic memories you must have this album!

3 out of 5 stars Not quite as expected........2006-08-07

I got this album after having faith in their previous one. After all, Aqua was all the rage of kids back then. It changed a lot from the previous album, and it was a whole lot different from "Barbie Girl".

Still, the songs were relatively good, but they never stood out a whole lot to me. They just seemed distant to me, and they didn't quite pack the punch Aquarium had. Though, I still did like the songs on this CD called "Around the World" and "An Apple a Day". As a bonus, this CD also has the music video for "Cartoon Heroes" on it.

3 out of 5 stars Aqua. Plain, simpel, and good earfillers on this one.......2006-04-03

Lene Nystrøm has a certain charisma, and this CD is very "easy listen". When you mix these part`s together, you get an earfriendly mix of good dance/pop music. The reason is the rythmic beat alltrough that makes it as somekind of "quality bubblegum" popmusic. Track 1 Cartoon Heroes, say`s it all. This is very cartoonish, both vocal and musical wise. Lene has a "cartoonish" voice where here voice fits perfect in to this kind of music. Track 2 Around the world is an another exampel, with here let`s call it "squeaky" vocal brings this song forward in a quite interesting way. Rene Dif growling singin
is also a funny contrast, which put`s them together as a whole. Track 3 Freaky Friday, has a fast backbeat rythm, which pushes it more or less headalong in a very fast tempo. Something different this one, with a small dash of country music bit`s and pices here and there. Track 4 We belong to the sea is a great pop song, with more depth to Lene`s and Rene`s voice. It has a melody which is very easy to fetch, and it`s nothing wrong with that. Track 5 An apple a day, it`s a hardtop, fastback, sprint Aqua song, which goes around in a dizzy way. Track 6 Halloween. Aqua goes "horror movie" this time. A creepy opener, but then it fells flat. The rest is to thin to make it scary. There are some weird Rene Dif growls hear and there but it doesn`t help too much. Track 7 Good guys is better and here the right "buttons" when it comes to "hit potensial are put on. There are more debt to Lene`s voice on this one. Track 8 Back from Mars, are in the Sc Fi department. To much cliches, but as Lene has sang before: Life it`s full of cliches. Track 9 Aquarius is the ballad of the CD, and it`s ok, but nothing special. Here voice sounds clear and has some depth and flair on this one. Track 10 Cuba Libre. Aqua does "carriebean" but it ends up as "poor whoman`s ethnic" inspired music.
Track 11. Bumble Bees, it`s a very funky "brainwasher" in a more or less positive sence. Track 12 Goodbye to the circus is a good closer, with a "circus touch" musical whise. Aqua. Plain and simpel dance music, with many times an ear for the good and effective beat and melodies. Aqua is anyway something different, a little bit over average in their genre of music. 3 1/2 star, well somewhere around there.

Liberty Records and it's affiliates always pressed incredibly well crafted vinyl. This Soul City Recording was no exception. The selection of material, musicians, engineers, artists and producer rarely, if ever, gets better than this. The Age Of Aquarius is one of the best pieces of pop to ever hit the airways, a turntable and now a CD player. This masterpiece should be a have to have for any audiophile. ToTal EaR CaNdY!

5 out of 5 stars I'm a Scorpio and I'll never forget the impact of this LP..........2006-05-17

I fondly remember various original members of this group, like Marilyn & Billy of The 5th Dimension (Seven Time Grammy Winners) the most popular 1960's/ '70s singing group of all time, would baby-sat for me at 2 and 3 years old in the early '60's; they were close friends of my mother Judith "Judy" Lynn M. & my late aunt Ethel Archie...

At the early stages of there music careers, according to my mom, she was invited to join the group; however, she passed...and now jokily say's in hindsight that "they would never make it..." Well, they did in a big way and the rest is history... I love and appreciate them and all there music...and they were very nice people too.

5 out of 5 stars Regardless of Your Birth Sign, You'll Love This Album.......2001-04-01

Thank you Buddha Records for re-issuing this wonderful album! Though the actual Age of Aquarius has long since come and gone, this album will remind you of some of the great sounds of that era. And who better to do it than The Fifth Dimension.

The title track is a wonderfully produced piece of work that puts the original version, which came from the Broadway Musical "Hair," to shame. The Dimension's version is hauntingly psychedelic yet very upbeat and, as always, the harmonies are precise and infectious.

Along the same lines, "Blowin' Away" is also a very upbeat number that features a harmonious intermingling of lovely Ms. Flo and Ms. Marilyn's voices. This is one song that will make you happy no matter how you feel. The same can also be said for the equally catchy "Workin' On A Groovy Thing."

Though the rest of the other material on this album is AT LEAST above average, I must admit I don't particularly like the Laura Nyro composition "Wedding Bell Blues." To this day, WBB still gets A LOT of airplay on adult contemporary and oldies stations. You might say I get the "wedding bell jitters" every time I hear this song.

Aside from that, I must say that overall, "The Age of Aquarius" is a great pop-soul album and it shows just how talented The Fifth Dimension were. Clearly, this is one album that's worthing listening to over and over again and you will definitely want to add it to your CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars A pop classic--every tune a winner.......2000-08-07

A tour de force of excellent singing and vibrant musicianship, The Age of Aquarius finds the Fifth Dimenion soaring vocally through some standout material, including songs by Laura Nyro (a powerhouse cover of "Blowin' Away"), Jimmy Webb, and Niel Sedaka. Although the 5th's version of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" has always reminded me of Up with People on acid, Billy Davis's gospel delivery of "Let It Be Me" is a revelation (forget the reviewer here who calls this a cover of "white" music--what myopic pigeonholing is that???); the choral singing on "Skinny Man" and "Wings of Heaven" is unbeatable at this time. Webb's jazzy "The Hideaway" rivals later work by the Manhattan Transfer (who should cover this--what an excellent song, passing into obscurity!). More importantly, the entire album reminds us that while much great musicianship surfaced in the late 1960s (e.g., Hendrix), great _singing_ was also emerging. This CD belongs in anyone's collection if s/he is serious about excellent pop music before it all became merely disposable.

5 out of 5 stars The 5th Dimension's Best.......2000-07-25

I had forgotten just how excellent this recording is. The old vinyl fell by the wayside a long time ago so I was pleased to see this tremendous Fifth Dimension album finally available on CD. While there are so many truly wonderful Fifth Dimension recordings, this one is by far the best. There is not one bad song on this album. Of special merit are the songs "Hideaway" (a Jimmy Webb tune given a jazzy, infectious treatment) and "Sunshine Of Your Love" (a masterful remake of the Eric Clapton/Cream classic.) This CD went from my home stereo to my car stereo because I just couldn't get enough of it. I seem to love it more today than I did years ago when it was first released; and it still seems so fresh today. They just don't make songs or albums like this anymore. And, there are certainly no groups like the Fifth Dimension anymore. If you are looking for just one Fifth Dimension compact disc for your collection, this is the one to get. However, I'm sure it will wet your appetite for more. Your next Fifth Dimension purchase suggestion would be The Definitive Collection - an excellent overview of their career which also contains some rare material previously difficult to find on CD such as "Flashback" and "Light Sings." However, this is the CD to buy. Song for song, this is the best overall Fifth Dimension album recorded. I do wish, however, Buddah would release the LP "Individually & Collectively" on CD also. Buy this one and "Let The Sunshine In." This is a must for any true Fifth Dimension fan.

4 out of 5 stars The Sounds of Love.......2007-07-02

This CD is a single, freely flowing instrumental composition that succeeds perfectly in aligning the breath & heartbeat in active meditation. Its' rhythms are gentle, yet pulsating--and definitely entrancing. For people who really want more conventional pop/"New Age" selections that are made up of a number of short (less than 10 min.) tunes, this CD would probably not be of that much interest. However, for people seriously looking for mature meditation music--by all means try el-Hadra.

I don't want to upset anybody or bend any "Review Rules," but this CD is really incredible to make unhurried (Tantric) love by.

5 out of 5 stars Music to reduce your stress........2007-02-16

The beat of this music has a calming effect, not unlike that of a deep meditative state. It's constant soothing rhythm reminds me of a heartbeat. I use it regularly to reduce my stress and bring myself back to my center, sheding new light on difficult personal situations. I deep a few copies of this on hand to give away as I am often asked about it.

4 out of 5 stars Mediative/Yoga CD.......2007-01-11

The music flows endlessly, but it's too bad that the same song is replayed on the CD instead of a different one. This CD should be priced lower.

5 out of 5 stars surrender.......2006-12-09

This is my favorite piece of music. Musical sophistication and complexity spun into a harmonius sound that compells surrender. A must have to reconnect with yourself or your lover. Invokes softening. Its YUMMY!

5 out of 5 stars Very relaxing music.......2006-03-28

This has been a favourite of mine for many years. I have listened it to help unwind after work, and while painting and drawing.

Probably best not to listen as you drive as it is maybe a bit too relaxing, but highly recommended if catching public transport.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest of The Monkees's albums, and a masterpiece in its own right...........2007-05-29

This is not only The Monkees's best album, it's also a great album completely on its own. Too often The Monkees (as others have said here) get trashed by the establishment. Here they showed that they actually had talent, and made their most consistent and greatest album. There are many great, great songs here, including Cuddly Toy, the intense Words, the country pop masterpiece What Am I Doing Hanging Around?, and the pyschedelic (and brilliant) Daily Nightly (penned by Mike Nesmith). It also has one of their most underrated pop singles, Pleasant Valley Sunday. If you take away the fact that The Monkees were originally a band made up by record executives just to create an American Beatles, they still made great music and this album should prove that they were excellent musicians in their own right. I play this album a lot, and it keeps improving everytime I play it.

5 out of 5 stars PAC&JL: Walking the walk and talking the talk.......2007-05-23

Anyone remotely familiar with the Monkees saga knows that the members of the band grew weary over being ventriloquist dummies for Don Kirschner and the songs from his "hit factory" (yes, he wanted them to record "Sugar, Sugar," and yes, he got his revenge by recording it with a cartoon band and scoring a massive hit). On "PAC&JL," the Monkees put their money where their mouths were. There's not a bad song on this album, and it actually flows like an intelligently sequenced work. It's definitely a relic of the late 60s, with Micky Dolenz adding Moog textures to "Daily Nightly" (he owned one of the first units produced). The Nesmith stuff? Every song stands on equal ground with the best of his later solo work: "Salesman," "Door Into Summer," and the transcendent "What Am I Doing Hanging Round." PAC&JL is every bit as good as the work of period bands such as Paul Revere & The Raiders. It also proved to be their peak, as subsequent projects led to the departure of Tork, then Nesmith, then a few years before the inevitable reunion tours. While there are many excellent tracks in the band's full catalog, this was the single album that showcased their talents in the best possible light.

5 out of 5 stars The local rock group down the street is trying hard to learn this song........2007-01-01

This is arguably the Monkees' best album (it's either this or Headquarters). The Monkees didn't play all of the instruments on this album, but they did play a great deal of them, and they were definitely in charge of the recording sessions. There are many great songs on this album, and nothing really bad. Some of the my favorites include "The Door Into Summer", "Love is Only Sleeping", "What Am I Doing Hangin' Round", "Star Collector" and "Pleasant Valley Sunday" (my very favorite Monkees song). The CD adds several bonus tracks. The great "Goin' Down" was recorded at the same sessions as the rest of this album, and was the b-side of "Daydream Believer", which was also recorded at these sessions. ("Daydream Believer" was included on the album after this one.) There are also five interesting alternate mixes of songs from this album. These feature different vocals and/or instrumentation than the "regular" versions of the songs. Anyone interested in the Monkees should own this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The word 'underrated' comes to mind..........2006-09-13

After the debacle of trying to record "Headquarters" by themselves, the Monkees got wise and brought back in the studio hands. The result is one of the better albums of the late 60s. There is some schmaltz here, but it's more than displaced by the excellent singing, songwriting, and musicianship displayed by all four Monkees. Michael Nesmith's lead line on "Pleasant Valley Sunday", although admittedly lifted from "Paperback Writer", is particularily well executed (never mind the fact Lennon borrowed it from Bobby Parker's "Watch Your Step"). Nesmith's reading of his early 60s Greenwich Village torch song "Don't Call On Me" is a wonderfully poignant counterpoint to some of the more overly pop elements on the disc, and "Love Is Only Sleeping" is easily the high point of his Monkees output. Here's hoping Rhino reissues the mono mix of this album as well, as "Sleeping" has some radical and ear-pleasing differences from its stereo counterpart.

As usual with a Rhino reissue, the liner notes don't disappoint. Another bonus is the original track-listing of the album, which you can recreate by programming your cd player. Both versions are contenders in my book!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-06-18

One simple word I would use to describe this album would be "wow". The Monkees were performing were once again performing as a band together (although you find out from reading the liner notes, that they had many more musicians involved on this album). This is the beginning of some of the Monkees psycadelic work, with songs like "Daily Nightly", "Star Collector", and "Words". This is my second favorite Monkees album, next to "Headquarters", and it is fantastic. Here is my review of the songs:

1. "Salesman" - A perfect way to start off the album with a great rockin' Mike song. Very catchy tune, that sounds like classic Mike. 9/10

2. "She Hangs Out" - This is definitely one of the Monkees more popular non-singles. They usually perform it at their concerts. Good Davy song. 8/10

3. "The Door Into Summer" - This is a song written by Chip Douglas and sung by Mike. Excellent song, with a great chorus, and one of my favorite Monkees tunes. 10/10

4. "Love Is Only Sleeping" - A fantastic song, which was originally supposed to be a single, instead of "Daydream Believer". I like this song more everytime I hear it, and might be in my top 10 Monkees songs. 10/10

5. "Cuddly Toy" - Definitely not one of my favorites, although it's a fairly popular song. It's just kind of a cheesy Davy tune to me. 5/10

6. "Words" - The flipside of "Pleasant Valley Sunday", and a very psycadellic Boyce/Hart song. Has a sound that defines this album, and even features some vocals from Peter. 10/10

7. "Hard To Believe" - Probably my least favorite song on the album, and it seems like it just doesn't fit in with the rest. I usually skip over it. 5/10

8. "What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round" - This is another very popular song that was not a single. It's classic Mike with his country rock, and it was always one of my favorites when I was little. 10/10

9. "Peter Percival Paterson's Pet Pig Porky" - Just an intro by Peter to "Pleasant Valley Sunday".

10. "Pleasant Valley Sunday" - I'm sure most people know this song, as it was one of their more popular singles. It was also probably their most psycadellic to date. And I think this single really shows how the Monkees were trying to break away from that bubble gum image. 10/10

11. "Daily Nightly" - This is a song that was written by Mike and features some great Micky vocals. The best part of the song, however, is Micky's incredible use of the moog synthesizer. Very psycadellic. 10/10

12. "Don't Call On Me" - Perhaps the strangest song on the album. It's a Mike song which almost sounds like lounge music. I never liked it when I was younger, but it has definitely grown on me. It might not seem like it fits in, but I think it's so weird that it just works for the album. 10/10

13. "Star Collecotr" - Might be the most psycadellic song on the album, with a whole lot of synthesizer, and keyboards. Another strange song, but I think it's great. 10/10

Nothing jumps out too much in the bonus tracks, excepts "Goin' Down", which was the flipside of "Daydream Believer", and never released on an album. Most everything else is different versions of the songs. The most interesting one of those is "Daily Nightly", without the synthesizer. You can really see what Micky added to the song.

So, in my opinion, this is just an amazing album, and definiely worth a purchase, whether you are a Monkees fan or not.

1 out of 5 stars You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Re-introduction to USA fans........2007-01-19

To most American hard rock fans, "First Glace" was April Wine's first album..and some USA fans still think it is. However the band had been together since the late 60's and some of their earlier Aquarius albums were released in the USA on Big Tree and London records. Despite "You Could Have Been A Lady" getting into the USA Top 40 in 1972, neither record company promoted their albums, even with many tracks that could have been huge AOR or Top 40 hits. (A lot of great Canadian bands like Trooper and Prism never got the promtion and breaks in the USA that they really deserved) Had they been on a record company that cared about them like Mercury did and toured the USA relentlessly, April Wine might have been as successful here in the mid 70's as BTO and Rush were.

Finally in 1978 April Wine hooked up with Capitol, which released "First Glance" here. The American version is a little different... It starts with "Get Ready For Love" instead of "Hot on the wheels of Love", and the cover uses the same band photograph and a simular cover design based on the Aquarius "Greatest Hits" album. Since hardly anyone in the USA knew what the band looked like, this was probably a smart idea. Capitol (after a few bum singles) gave the band a deserved USA Top 40 hit with "Roller" and the album went gold. This breakthrough album lead the way for the success of the "Harder...Faster" LP and especially the platinum selling "Nature of the Beast" LP.

I got a chance to see April Wine at Dallas (now sadly demolished) Bronco Bowl in 2000. The band put on a fine performance that night. Several members of the Dallas Stars hockey team showed up and a couple of members of Pantera were hanging out. A buddy who was there told me Dimebag (RIP) was greatly impressed with the Wine's tight version of "21st Century Schizoid Man".

5 out of 5 stars Classic Canadian Rock.......2006-11-22

Following the release of `Forever, For Now', April Wine fans were wondering in just what direction Myles and the boys would jerk them with the next album. Never fear, the band returned with the rock'n'roll classic `First Glance', their "hardest" album since `Electric Jewels', and had one more surprise - a fifth member. Brian Greenway, an accomplished guitarist, harmonica player, singer, and songwriter in his own right, was thrown into the mix (pardon the pun) about halfway through the making of the album. The addition of Greenway meant a few of things - first, and most importantly, it allowed Myles to play keyboards during live shows while still retaining a thick two-guitar sound (or even better an immensely fat sound when Myles picked up his own Les Paul). Second, it allowed the band to record songs they could actually reproduce on stage. Third, it added another voice for background, and occasionally lead vocals. And to top it off, Greenway even added a few songs of his own on later albums.

Goodwyn's decision that this was going to be a purely rock album is evident from the opening guitar riffs. Curiously, the vinyl version (which I bought the day it was released in 1978) opens with "Hot On The Wheels Of Love" rather than "Get Ready For Love", which opens the CD version I purchased in later years. After years of listening to the vinyl version, I could never get used to starting the CD with "Get Ready...". I always thought that "Hot On..." was a great opening track. The third track is "Rock'n'Roll Is a Vicious Game" which was one of the first two singles from the album (the other being "Let Yourself Go", which didn't go anywhere). The first single was well-received in Canada, but not in the US, and the dismal showing of the second single contibuted greatly to the fact that the album quickly began slipping from the charts. Ironically, the centre-point of the album, which is, of course, "Roller" was never considered for release as a single until an FM in Michigan began playing it. The song's popularity skyrocketed, and "Roller" went on to be the second-biggest single in April Wine's history, remaining in the Billboard Top 30 for 11 weeks. The strength of "Roller" propelled the album to gold status in the US, another first for the band, and the album itself remained in the Billboard album charts for several weeks.

While April Wine has always been great in concert (I know, because I've seen them in every venue from a bar to a stadium), it was the heavier guitar-oriented `First Glance' and the subsequent three records that pushed April Wine into the forefront as one of the truly great arena guitar-rock bands of the late 70's and early 80's.

3 out of 5 stars A snap shot in time............2006-03-25

Brining back memories of a fire bird, warm Busch Beer and Jensen 6X9's. If you can't attribute memories like that to this album then it really isn't that great. Like most music from the late 70's to late 80's: if you didn't grow up during those times the music isn't so great nor meaningful. I love this album along with Nature, Harder Faster and Power Play.

2 out of 5 stars Not so great..........2005-12-21

I think this is a pretty boring album. The music is samey, generic, and dull. By the time this record came out in 1978, April Wine were pumping out hits faster than the assembly line in a factory! They sound like they're just trying to churn out as many hit singles as possible, without giving much thought to the individual songs themselves. Their attempts to write catchy hooks and arena rock choruses sound forced. There aren't any particularly original or interesting songwriting ideas expressed here, the whole thing just seems redundant compared to their other albums. As far as I can see, I'd say that they didn't really have anything to say when they made this......they were just churning out filler to keep the royalties coming in. I really don't recomend this cd to anybody. It represents the "Dark Ages" in April Wine history. Definately not their best......not by a long shot.

3 out of 5 stars Rather mediocre... an ok album but you can do better.......2005-01-12

I mean you can really do better with your money than buy this album. Except for a couple of tracks which you can get on almost any AW compilation there is really nothing here to listen to. The rest of the songs are pretty derivative and extremely similar to the rest of the arena-rock manufactured by megatons at the time of the album's release. "Roller" is an ok rocker but again it's not a real hit from my point of view. There is no song here that leaves me enthralled and begging for more. First two tracks are universally considered the highlights but I wouldn't give them more than a B- in my report card.

2 out of 5 stars Here's Where The Wine Starts To Go Bad..........2006-07-25

What happened? "First Glance" gave us a fresh taste of a more aggressive April Wine, "Harder...Faster" improved on that formula, and "Nature Of The Beast" was the best vintage of Wine yet. "Power Play" not only knocked the momentum out of April Wine's upward growth, it disappointed a lot of their fan base. For a band that once declared "I Like To Rock," the performances here suggest otherwise. "Enough Is Enough," the first single, is a nice attempt to regain some radio airplay, but after that, the album is littered with unmemorable tunes. In addition to the band's tepid performance on "Power Play," Goodwyn sounds like he's run out of ideas lyrically, to the point where the band's second single, "If You See Kay" gained more notority from what the title sounded like (say it real fast) instead of the song itself. And that's sad, because April Wine was on their way to becoming more successful than they turned out to be. This album was the reason they never got there.

2 out of 5 stars Two good tracks, two medium, rest - filler.......2005-01-12

This was definitely a disappointment for the fans - after two really good records they got this piece of ... hmm ... vinyl. "Anything You Got..." is great fast number. "If You See Kay" is original and very entertaining - an attentive listener will surely immediately notice the naughty wordplay but even without it the song is catchy and extremely listenable. But that's where the fun stops. "Enough is Enough" is decent rocker and "Waiting on a Miracle" is more or less OK but the rest is pretty uninspired.

5 out of 5 stars As good as Nature of the Beast!.......2004-09-07

Sadly April Wine's follow up to The Nature of the Beast, 1982's Power Play is only available as an important. I believe that by 1986 Power Play hadn't even gone gold, but I dont' see why it wouldn't have sold as much as The Nature of The Beast, other than Capitol records lack of promotion. Anyway, Anything YOu Want, and Enough is Enough(the hit single)open the album. Followed by If You See Kay. The quality of the songs is out of this world, I just can't believe that the album bombed. This is much better than a lot of that crap out there today. It's such a crime that this is only available as an important. Capitol should reissue this and make a two for one with The Nature of the Beast album.

5 out of 5 stars Great Early 80's Hard Rock.......2004-05-16

This cd was April Wine's 1982 follow up to their very successful Nature Of The beast cd form 1981. This cd is great, but not quite as awesome as Nature of The Beast. The music is melodic hard rock with 3 electric guitars and great vocals produced by Mike Stone and lead vocalist/guitarist Myles Goodwyn. There are 2 ballads out of the 10 songs on the cd and 8 rockers. The stand out songs are the two hit singles; ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and IF YOU SEE KAY(WHICH CREATED A STIR IN 1982 WHEN PEOPLE TRANSLATED THE TITLE TO A 4 LETTER WORD),RUNNERS IN THE NIGHT,ANYTHING YOU WANT YOU GOT. The songs are not as hard rockin' as there 70's albums, but still sounds pretty good to me.
