Talkie Walkie comes five years after their landmark Moon Safari and Parisian mood-enhancers Air are back doing what they do best. Famously shy of ever repeating themselves, JB Dunckel and Nicolas Godin have filled in the years with the poorly received follow-up, 10,000hz Legend (even they think it strange), and an eerily effective soundtrack to Sofia Coppola's Virgin Suicides. Nice enough in their own niche way, but a far cry from what people actually wanted.
Happily, Talkie Walkie reunites us with the Air that we love: two hopelessly indulgent romantics with an ear in the past and an eye on the future. It's meltingly good stuff--a collection of cool, cosmic pop songs that dispense with notions of time and space, wallowing instead on a cloud of poignant psychedelia. With vocal duties this time taken by the boys themselves, and gorgeously fragile strings courtesy of Serge Gainsbourg collaborator, Michel Colombier, they get off to a good start. Perhaps the introduction of an outside producer, in this case Radiohead's Nigel Godrich, has forced such beautifully measured focus? Whatever, touchy-feely epics such as the heavenly "Cherry Blossom Girl" sit well next to electronic masterpieces such as "Ran," whose enveloping tracked vocals recall the 10cc classic "I'm Not in Love." --Paul Tierney

Run Run Run Run Run and Pick Up This Album.......2007-06-26
Besides being shocked that Air was comprised of two MEN, I was also shocked at how much I ended up liking this record. What hooked me originally was the wide range of sounds and electronic instrumentation layered throughout the various tracks (see especially "Surfing On A Rocket" and "Run") and I found the melodies to be very catchy. The vocals are very gender-ambiguous (if that makes any sense...?), and many times are also synthesized. I was raised on 80's synth-alternative like Depeche Mode, Yaz, OMD, etc. and this brought back a lot of good memories. If you're in the same boat, I recommend picking this album up...might also wanna check out Zero 7's "When It Falls".
Away With the Vocals!.......2007-03-05
Simply put, Air would be my favorite band if they did strictly instrumental albums. Unfortunately they've moved away from this. I can not listen to this album the whole way through; the songs with vocals make me cringe and skip to the next tracks. "Alone in Kyoto," "Alpha Beta Gaga," and "Mike Mills" are brilliant songs, but the rest of the album is ruined by cheesy lyrics, poorly sung, and distorted not to add any ethereal quality but to mask the limited vocal ability of the duo.
A Waste.......2007-01-27
Talkie Walkie is a waste of resources. The distorted tones make many of the cuts sound like they are out of tune. The vocals sound like they were recorded by zombies. All in all, I thought it was pretty boring. I bought the album because the last cut is pretty good. There are a few other cuts that are not bad. But most of it is pretty awful.
Faith In The Greatness Of Things.......2006-11-18
I had never heard of Air when I bought this album. I have no desire to compare it to Moon Safari (which I now also own), so Air-fans seeking a grade on the basis of that comparison should look elsewhere. Let's judge the album on the basis of its own merits, shall we?
That having been said, this album is amazing. Simply amazing.
It's not just the songs, which seem to be woven out of dream-silk with a creamy, bittersweet sensuality. I heard a friend describe the tunes as "cheesy;" maybe some of the themes could be described as cheesy (undying love, finding joy in spite of pain), but that makes them no less valid. Besides, what's certainly NOT cheesy is the exquisite and heart-breaking craftsmanship. I get goosebumps every time I hear this album because Air somehow manages to use a sort of gorgeous and liquid melancholy to craft songs that inspire hope, joy, peace, and faith in the greatness of things. In spite of the dark (rather sexy) shadow that these melodies cast, the songs themselves loom glittering and unswerving.
In addition to having a collection of uniformly outstanding songs, this record has also arranged the songs in an order that encourages an uninterrupted listen from beginning to end. The tender, sad-sweet love of Venus is picked up by Cherry Blossom Girl and taken to higher and brighter places. The mood dips and swerves and slides past creepily gorgeous corners in Run, across soothing sunset landscapes in Universal Traveler, through the stratosphere in Mike Mills, and into a cool and twinkling world of stars in Surfing On A Rocket. Another Day, Alpha Beta Gaga, Biological ... they're all skin-rippling fun, physically seductive, emotionally charged, and achingly beautiful.
It's a little short (especially since, with songs this good, you naturally crave more), but I don't think anyone with their sense of wonder still intact will find this record anything short of amazing.
Oooooo La, la...........2006-09-16
I can't help it, I LOVE Air. I know there is a giant movement out there and the majority of Air lovers prefer Moon Safari, but I disagree. I think Talkie Walkie is far more refined. It's smoother, and it hits your touchy feely places. It's also more consistent throughout than Moon Safari and has much better flow. I think I can get around the cheesy lyrics by brushing it off as Frenchies with a language barrier thing. The music speaks for itself and I've never played a song more times than Universal Traveler. This album is a MUST have for anyone.

Album Description
Co-produced by Grammy-nominated mixmaster Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Beck), "Talkie Walkie" features ten new cinematic pop songs that are direct, intimate and romantic, the band's most rewarding collection to date. For the first time, the band handles all the vocal duties themselves to great effect, plus there are several trademark instrumentals such as "Alone In Kyoto" which also appeared in Sofia Coppola's recent hit movie "Lost In Translation". The Limited Edition CD comes with a bonus DVD featuring an inventively shot 35 minute film of Air on tour intercut with behind the scenes footage.

The best Version of Air's Sublime Talkie Walkie Album.......2005-04-06
The group "Air" which consists of two frenchmen "Nicolas Godin" & "Jean-Benoit Dunckel", have had something of a turbulent series of studio albums, which saw them peak immediately with 1998's untouchable debut "Moon Safari", and then follow that up the next 1999's sublime instrumental compilation "Premiers Symptomes" (Which was a collection of early material). But since then, It's been largely regarded that the pair have released successive albums that haven't been able to recapture that unmistakable magic from their debut. With both 2000's "The Virgin Suicides" & 2001's "10,000 Hz Legend", being largely disappointing, with 2003's "City Reading" being purely in Italian, therefore being largely impenetrable to most listeners. So there obviously, expectations wasn't too high for 2004's "Talkie Walkie", but surprisingly (probably to even "Air" themselves"), they delivered one of 2004's most notable albums.
The stomping crashing piano chords of "Venus" are by and large a surprise, especially considering the usual subtle nature of Air tracks , sounding for all it's worth like a melodic paced Funeral arrangement, deep in melancholic temperament & strangely reflective. Even more of a suprise is the fact that instead of using various vocalists like they have in the past, the duo handle all the vocal duties on this album, and remarkably, even though their voices have been electronically enhanced, make a superb stab at giving a sense of romanticism to the track intoning: "You could be from Venus, I could be from Mars, We would be together, Lovers forever..." Lead single "Cherry Blossom Girl" opens with a gorgeously hypnotic keyboard melody, that evokes memories of 'Moon Safari-era' Air, delightfully upbeat electronic pop is the order of the day here and although it's all Gallic cool, mixed with naive whimsy and lyrically showing uneasy love ("I don't want to be shy, Can't stand it anymore, I just want to say 'Hi', To the one I love.....Cherry blossom girl"), their use of vocoder, is also hugely impressive in it's simplicity, and it's proably amongst the finest singles Air has created in years.
"Universal Traveller", opens with a gorgeous string section, that then leads into delicate whispered vocals: ("I know so many Places in the world, I follow the sun, In my silver plane.... Universal traveller!!"), with the gentle humming of keyboards & plucked guitar, combining to make a remarkably intimate downtempo Pop. The instrumentals on this album are beautifully judged efforts, as on the matured textured sounds of sadness and contemplation of "Mike Mills" , and the glowing superbly catchy whistling of "Alpha Beta Gaga", with its use of swirly, keyboards fluttering in and out of the sound, which show that Air haven't forgotten the fine art of making music, without vocals that admirably stands on it own two feet.
"Biological" even has the gall to use a banjo in its arrangement (subtly/beautifully used by the way), with the plodding synth's, and drifting, wistful melodies bringing images interexploration travel & moonbased love, with an knowingly-insular chorus of ("Biological....I don't know why I feel that way with you??....Biological, I need your DNA!!"). but personally speaking, the finest track on here is the truly breathtaking instrumental that is "Alone in Kyoto". (taken from the "Lost in Translation" film), a truly stunning example of giving the feeling of being lost in a strange cosmopolitan town, completely in solitude.....drenched in string laden-ed glory, with it's delicate keyboards and intimately plucked guitar, it a movingly slow and hugely melodic tune, that doesn't move with any real pace, but feels so deeply personal and detached, it feels like its moving in a universe all of its own. And (for me) arguably the best thing Air have done since 'Moon Safari'.
For those that fell with love with Air's music via "Moon Safari" (and who didn't??), and have been disappointed with their recent output, this is clearly the best thing they've done since then. But as truly worthy of 5 Stars that this album is, It's NOT a replacement (or indeed a better album) than "Moon Safari". The decision to use their own vocals was indeed a brave step, and has largely worked, but they can't quite match the trained vocalists on Safari, and there isn't anything quite of numbingly unique, impressionistic or atmospheric as "Sexy Boy", "All I Need", "You Make it Easy"..(although "Alone is Kyoto" & "Alpha Beta Gaga" are amongst their finest instrumentals). But even though this album doesn't quite match the majesty of "Moon Safari", it is (with the exception of 'Premiers Symptomes') easily the best thing they've done, and is justifiably a good enough album to pick up a whole new set of fans.
Listen twice before you judge!!!!.......2005-01-04
When first listening to this CD, I thought this is a good Air Cd. Surfing on a Rocket & Alpha Beta Gaga stand out immediately. After listening to this CD again, I feel this is one of the best CDs I own!!! Universal Traveler being one of the best songs I've ever heard. Put this disc on and chill.
Essential Air.......2004-12-05
"Talkie Walkie" is the latest CD from the French duo known as Air, and it's exactly what Air fans look for from their music. Although usually lumped in the same broad category as Massive Attack and Zero 7, Air's music is usually far more subtle and romantic than their closest downtempo cousins. Despite the vintage synthesizers heard on several tracks, Air rely more heavily on traditional analog and acoustic instrumentation than do other chillout acts. Despite this production choice, Air do not come across as ironic or retro - this is clearly a CD intended for the 21st Century. It's psychedelic without being trippy or kitschy. Although none of the songs on "Talkie Walkie" can be considered crossover pop or rock material, all are soothing, ingenious pieces of mood music. ('Surfing on a Rocker' is the closest they come to a hit here) It's as challenging or as relaxing as you, the listener, choose it to be. Don't expect to dance to this; expect to reflect on this. It would be perfect as the soundtrack to a arty film about relationships.
The bonus DVD consists of a bewilderingly edited concert performance. Live, doing material from Moon Safari, Air almost come across as an updated version of Pink Floyd's Pompeii years. Unfortunately, the concert footage is intercut with shots of the touring band on the road and interviews. Still, this is a great bonus, and makes the CD an even better value!
If you enjoy Air, this CD is a must-have. I only wish there were more songs collected here, since all the songs are of a similarly high quality.
wonderful album.......2004-11-28

"Talkie" about "Suicide".......2005-10-02
Air is one of those downtempo electronica bands who specialize in exquisitely pretty music, whether it's trippy and jazzy, or eerie ambient pop. Compiled here is their latest album "Talkie Walkie," and the beloved soundtrack to Sofi Coppola's "Virgin Suicides" movie.
"Talkie Walkie" takes many of its cues from the French duo's debut album, "Moon Safari," meaning that it's made of mellow, dreamy, smooth trip-hop. It dips into darker places in songs with haunted synths and sexy vocals, but most of it is catchy, dreamy, and often entrancingly pretty.
"Virgin Suicides" was apparently crafted specifically for the movie, at the director's request. Like the film, it's incredibly pretty and haunting, yet has dark undertones that give the whole thing a brooding sound. A couple songs like "Clouds Up" sound trippy, but the rest of it sounds tragic and ethereal. In other words, perfect for the movie.
"Talkie Walkie" and "The Virgin Suicides" are the most rewarding pieces of Air's recent work. In fact, it's easy to forget the less engaging "10,000 Hertz Legend" and think that Air went straight from "Suicides" to "Walkie"; these albums have them playing on their strengths alone, whether it's synth-heavy trip-hop or powerful, anguished pop.
Their styles are actually quite different -- what the two albums have in common is ethereality, and the space-pop edges and ambient prettiness. "Moon Safari" is dreamier and spacier, with poppy hooks woven into the glimmery melodies. It's not exactly ambient music per se, but it feels like an extended trip up into the clouds.
On the other hand, "Suicides" veers closer to the ambient pop edge, with the occasional slow edge of dark keyboard. Adding to the otherworldly sound is soft female harmonies rising over it all, as if the girls of the title are singing on their way to the hereafter. Not a single song could be called dancey or even midtempo.
"Talkie Walkie" and "Virgin Suicides" offer a look at some of Air's greatest strengths, whether it's angsty, airy pop or dreamy trip-hop.
