With each passing year the influence and impact of some of the true pioneers of jazz is absorbed further into the genre's fabric. For instance, those who cite Coltrane as an influence are also indirectly acknowledging the impact of those from who `Trane drew inspiration as well as licks and tricks. As a result, the founding fathers are increasingly being relegated to footnotes for newer generations of jazz fans.
With "Disorder at the Border," saxophonist Bennie Wallace pays tribute to tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins. During a career that spanned from the `20s to the `60s, Hawkins' innovations made him one of the founding fathers of modern jazz, yet his legacy today is largely underappreciated.
Using a small big band comprised of six brass- including such luminaries as trumpeter Terrell Stafford, trombonist Ray Anderson, baritone saxophonist Adam Schroeder, alto saxophonists Jesse Davis and Brad Leali- and rhythm section, Wallace presents a rousing program of six tunes associated with "Bean," as Hawkins was known.
Although honoring Hawkins requires looking back, this is far from a nostalgic date. Recorded live at the Berlin Jazz Fest in 2004 with sparkling clarity and great depth, horn riffs punctuate the backdrop spurning soloists to new heights. Furthermore the soloists tackle their time in the spotlight with aplomb which harks back to the day yet is imbued with a wholly modern slant.
Two compositions originate from Hawkins pen, the title-track which kicks off the disc in rousing fashion and "Bean and the Boys" which is served up jam-session style and features some excellent work by Stafford and another killer Schroeder solo which recalls legendary baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams.
Elsewhere the band rips it up on Fats Waller's "Honeysuckle Rose," complete with an alto cutting-contest, and big whoops from Wallace and Schroeder's baritone.
The spirit of Charles Mingus creeps into a rollicking sixteen-minute reading of "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho." Here perhaps better than anywhere else the group flexes its muscle- showcasing the powerhouse unit they are while losing none of the nuance or subtlety which is otherwise omnipresent.
Hawkins put "Body and Soul" on the jazz map and here Wallace dismantles it and then reassembles it. Using fragments of the original solo to craft an instrumental statement which culminates in a rousing cadenza, Wallace's tribute here and throughout the disc is both humble and heartfelt.

One to listen to over and over.......2007-03-03

I bought this when it first came out and have been waiting for another from this really fine guitar player. The fare is varied and without exception done to a turn. He has a style and tone of his own and unerring taste in tunes. Just take this and put it in the car CD player and listen to it over and over. Let's hear some more.

Amazing Debut!.......2004-10-22

This is jazz guitarist Josh Workman's debut as a bandleader, and what a debut it is! Workman is a musician of enormous talent and shines on every single song on this recording. The bop tunes are swingin', the Brazilian tunes gorgeous and the gypsy-jazz selections (particularly "Kali Sara") are just as brilliantly executed as any Django-inspired recordings I've ever heard. If this CD is any indication of what's to come, this guitar player has a LONG and successful career ahead of him!

Unexpected!.......2001-09-01

I took a chance and bought this album. What a welcome suprise! Don't let the cover fool you, this is a collection of outstanding and heartfelt jazz. From upbeat New Orleans style, to the soulful strains of the blues, this is a full plate of clarinet-led quartet gold. What a tone! What a glissado!
What music!
I'm not an audiophile, so I won't discuss the technical merits of this album, but it sounds great to me!

Great Debut.......2005-12-29

I found Miggs quite by accident as I was surfing myspace for local bands to perform for a Hurricane fundraiser, but it was an accident that was welcomed in my life. Little did I realize that I would absolutely fall in love with this band and its pop/rock music. Miggs' debut album, "Anyway," is filled with emotion. The emotions are human, ones that every listener can relate to, those of sadness and adulation for love are expressed in the beautiful lyrics written by Don Miggs who combines his lyrical talent with that of guitarist and lead singer. His strong vocals on this album are especially moving as his voice expresses the heartfelt feelings of love, pain and joy.

"Taste" has moved to being one of my all time favorite songs. It is a beautiful song that speaks to the experiences of life and the roller coaster of our lives. Whether joy or pain each song will capture some feeling you have experienced in your life and bring you back for more listening pleasure.

this album is great! i think its a little like matchbox 20 "yourself or someone like you" (the one before "mad season") the lyrics are catching and fun, i was singing with it after only hearing it once. an awesome first cd, i cant wait for insomnia!

The Berwick Tattoo.......2002-09-27

The Berwick Tattoo occurs every two years at the barracks of the King's Own Scottish Borderers at Berwick on Tweed. This is a relatively new Tattoo, and an example of some of the newer shows coming up to replace some of the older fair which has passed away in the UK. The recordings quality for a live performance is excellent. Highlights include the massed pipes and drums display, and then individual displays by the various military bands present. The display by the newly formed Highland Band is of particular interest, the band having been recently formed from the remnants of the Scottish Division bands. The finale includes all the standard fair for these kinds of shows. The listener should find the music enjoyable, as well as entertaining. Many good marches are played throughout. This is not CD with a lot of non-military fare in it, which should make it of particular interest. Recommended for those who like Tattoos and live music performances.
