"Vision--The Music of Hildegard von Bingen"? Make that "Hildegard--the Dance Remix." (Yes, it has been used on the dance floor of at least one New York City nightclub.) What else can you call it when Richard Souther takes the stark, ecstatic plainchant of the 12th-century abbess and adds heavily produced electronic trance-and-dance tracks? Souther's additions aren't bad in themselves--they are a bit New Age-y, yet danceable in a druggy 3:00-a.m. kind of way--but slather them over Hildegard's spare, intense chant melodies and the effect is perverse, if not just silly. Don't blame poor Emily van Evera--she is a fine interpreter of Hildegard, and EMI simply asked her to record some unaccompanied solo tracks of the abbess's music and send in the tapes; she had no idea what was going to be done with them until this disc came out with her name on it. This shows up in the final product: the gently fluid pulse van Evera applied to Hildegard's music (which would make perfect sense in the a cappella performance she thought she was giving) feels completely disconnected from the rigid rhythms inherent in Souther's electronic accompaniment. Now, there are a number of customer reviews, below, from listeners who like this title a great deal--have a look at them, check out the sound clips, and by all means get this title if you're interested. But, if you're curious about Hildegard, go to the recording that made her famous eight centuries after her death: A Feather on the Breath of God. --Matthew Westphal
Customer Reviews:
A very different style of Hildegard.......2007-01-30
This CD isn't quite the shining example of Hildegard's music, but it isn't dissapointing either. The new-agey music and the chanting go well together, but at times the mix is a little akward, and it is those moments when it seems that the vocals are just stamped on top of the music that takes away from this album. Otherwise, the music is pretty rich and conjures epic and heavenly images. I'd have to side with the 'purists' on this one: if you're a stickler for authentic sounding Hildegard music, go for the other albums such as Luminous Spirit because this one might come across as a little weird.
ONE WORD- 'AWSOME".......2006-12-15
I have been a fan of music since before I was born it seems- I have almost all of her music- but this is the star on the night sky- people keep trashing this album /cd- I think this is the best of her visions/music and if you want to be swept away on clouds of tone and dance with angels of light then BUY this cd- I love to darken the house , light the candles and let this one spin again and again- listen closely to " for the virgin' it will make you want to play this over and over again-also this entire cd was recorded in the catacombs- how spiritual is that, music/thought/words/visions from years turned to dust and stone- may this cd bring you back to a time when the world was innocent and gentle/have played this along with Enigma and people can not get enough of this cd!!!!!!!!!!
Very different. Hauntingly beautiful.......2006-03-01
I bought VISION, THE MUSIC OF HILDEGARD VON BINGEN without even hearing it first. I couldn't resist the album's cover art and the premise of recording the chants of a 12th century nun with modern original scores. I was delightfully surprised at how well the experiment works. The tracks are absolutely beautiful and haunting. In listening to one of the chants accompanied by an almost jarring drum beat, I felt as if I were dropped deep into a dense African jungle where a safari of large powerful natives are escorting small white hooded nuns to some mysterious lost city. A very different, very intriguing, very fine work.
"Every Element Has A Sound" ~ Heavenly Visions Of A Medieval Mystic.......2006-01-29
Hildegard Von Bingen (1098-1179), 12th century Benedictine nun, abbess and mystic wrote some of the most heavenly spiritual chants, psalms and canticles in the history of the Catholic Church. Compositions that are so unique and universal in appeal that they were embraced by the 'New Age Movement' more enthusiastically then they were originally by her own Church.
Similiar yet subtly different from the lofty, remote gregorian chants sung in the monastery, the music of Hildegard is much more accessible. Her experience of the 'Divine Mysteries' is conveyed in more emotional and earthy tones, thus linking the higher aspirations of the soul with the passionate nature of the human heart.
'Vision' was performed and recorded within the stone walls of St. Andrew's Church in Toddington, England, an almost perfect location to capture the medieval atmosphere of Hildegard's compositions. The female voices involved in this project are a sharp and welcome contrast to the all male gregorian choirs most of us are more familiar with.
Truly a mystical musical experience has been captured on these 17 exquiste tracks. For the spiritual seeker in all of us!
SUPERB MODERN CLASSIC.......2005-10-26
SOARING, ETHEREAL voices are followed by haunting, vaguely Middle Eastern new age sound. HILDEGARD meets ENIGMA. It works. The purists make no room for this kind of interpretation of Hildegard but I remind you that the Louvre built a separate museum to house the Impressionist art not because they were so valued but because they did not consider it serious art and would not put it under the same roof with the classics. Time made buffoons of them. Listen to the sound clips and judge for yourself.

track listing wrong.......2007-01-16
i love love love divine & was so excited to get this cd in the mail BUT to my dismay, the track listing in the description on this site is wrong. this cd DOES NOT have 'you think you're a man', 'i'm so beautiful' & 'jezabel', which is unfortunate & frustrating because these are the very tracks i bought the cd for.
Undercut.......2006-03-13
I used to dance to Bobby O at disco in my highschool time, so also liked Divine's songs produced by Bobby. Most of all, bobby-produced "Shake It Up" was often played by local DJs and impressive to me. But it is undercut from the long version in this collection, by about a minute, which is my quibble that led it to only 3 stars.
I ain't your Aunt Jemima and, honey, you ain't my pimp!.......2006-03-06
Divine, of course, was best known as John Waters' leading "lady" in several of his films. But he also had a career as a post-disco dance music diva. Sure, he couldn't sing worth a lick, but that's besides the point. He managed to be entertaining on his records by force of his personality. These songs were recorded in the 1980s, in the "hi-NRG" style that was popular in gay dance clubs at the time. They are fairly entertaining, with Divine spouting some ridiculous lyrics, but the musical backing tracks tend to sound pretty much the same. This is probably the best Divine CD available, if you're looking for one.

It's Simply DIVINE !!.......2005-05-23
Classic 80's dance traxx are what you will find here on "The Best Of Divine". The unforgettable hit, "NATIVE LOVE" really makes you shake your jungle thing. The classic, "SHOOT YOUR SHOT" has that Donna Summer rift that everyone & their brother has used. "LOVE REACTION" (the New Order ripoff). "I'M SO BEAUTIFUL (MY FAVORITE) is a classic dance trak with X-ELENT words that everyone should adhere to. "YOU THINK YOUR A MAN" has a good beat & you can dance to it (more HAIRSPRAY please). You will not be disappointed with the classic 80's NRG that DIVINE supplies on all of these traxx. Disco was never dead, it was just reborn & is still alive. These CLAS-SICK wax traxx are 4ever yours on this incrediable edible CD. Oh Mr. Eggman won't you please buy me "The Best Of Divine" ? Thanks Schroeder (DJ WACK "O")

Album Description
This is the FIRST ALL NEW RECORDING OF JOHN RUTTER'S MUSIC IN TEN YEARS! "Mass of the Children was written in late 2002 and early 2003. The occasion of its first performance in February 2003 was a concert in New York's Carnegie Hall involving children's choir, adult choir, soprano and baritone soloists, and orchestra. I had always wanted to write a work combining children's choir with adult performers, not only because I find the sound of children's voices irresistible but also because I wanted to repay a debt. As a boy soprano in my school choir I had been thrilled whenever our choir took part in adult works with children's choir parts, such as the Mahler Third Symphony and the Britten War Requiem, and years later I remembered this experience and wanted to write something that would give children a similar opportunity to perform alongside adult professionals". From the notes - John Rutter
Customer Reviews:
Mass of the Children.......2006-03-24
My daughter is performing this work with her high school chorale. She is the main listener, and is totally enamored with this particular recording.
A Brilliant Masterpiece.......2005-12-24
After being able to perform this piece myself, I know that is is just amazing! I reccomend it to anyobdy who likes spiritual, uplifting music.
Nice work, Mr. Rutter!
Britten-lite :(.......2005-03-30
I contemplated on this 3-star rating for a bit, especially after reading all the 4- to 5-star ratings preceding this. John Rutter is a terrific and charismatic choral conductor and writer. His editing on Fauré's Requiem really galvanized the popularity of that work, not to mention his own very heart-felt Requiem setting as well. Speaking of Requiem settings, my bone to pick about the "Mass of the Children" work is such that it emulates (albeit in a heart-felt and sincere fashion) other large-scale works that involve orchestral, treble and mixed choruses, very specifically Benjamin Britten's unforgettable War Requiem. I couldn't help but feel a bit slighted by the last few pages of "Mass of the Children" and its much diluted rendition of the War Requiem's counterpart conclusion. I think those famliar w/ the Britten will know what I mean. It's hard not to draw a comparison because the similarities are striking yet determinedly contrived.
In any case, I do understand that the participants and "target audience" are perhaps less lofty than that of the Britten. According to the score inscription, this was "written at the inviation of Peter Tiboris and MidAmerica Productions."
There are other anthems on this CD that offer a nice addition. I think the Clare Benediction is a stand-out as a great latter-Rutter anthem, with a characteristically satisfying, fluent and "inevitable" cadences towards the end.
Outstanding!.......2004-12-27
As an avid choral enthusiast, and having performed The Mass of the Children, I can say that this is one of Rutter's finest works. Without a doubt, Rutter truly allows his soul to shine through in this masterpiece. The children's choir is fabulous, and the music gives me chill bumps whenever I hear it. I highly recommend this album!
Beautiful!.......2004-09-11
I sing with my school choir, and was blessed to be able to perform the Mass of the Children with the school. It is a beautiful mass-- the lightness of the childrens voices with the power of the adult choirs make a moving and powerful mass. The orchestra is stunning, just enough to add beauty to the piece. Rutter's Mass of the Children is a must-have for any person who enjoys this type of music.

REAL MUSIC.......2007-01-16
THIS IS MUSIC YOU CAN LISTEN TO EVERY DAY AND ENJOY OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
White bread, well-baked in spots.......2005-08-12
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir that performs on this disc is a tightly-knit, well-conducted unit, and some of the tracks on the disc border on the ethereal. "Lead, Kindly Light," "Sweet Hour of Prayer" (in parts) and "The King of Love My Shepherd Is," for example, touch the soul and bring tears to the eyes.
However, on other arrangements the choir sounds like a group of white folks far removed from the remainder of humanity. For example, the opening track, "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty," and also "All Creatures of Our God and King" sound rote and perfunctory, like a group of elementary school students (with very fine voices, to be sure) going through the paces of a daily sing: elevator music on a grand scale. At the opposite extreme, sudden dynamic shifts in other tracks sound pretentious. The final bars of "All Creatures of Our God and King" suggest an attempt at a grand finale, but lack even a hint of majesty or passion. The choir lacks any apparent understanding of the Shaker spirit in "Simple Gifts" --- rather like Lawrence Welk playing Bob Marley. (Not that I've ever seen a Shaker in dreadlocks.) "Battle Hymn of the Republic" begins majestically, but turns into a caricature, and then reverts to a semblance of glory (except for a brief flirtation with a minor key).
The high praise lavished on this disc by other reviewers is no surprise: It is of very high quality for what it is. The choir offers a lovely sound. However, more than half the tracks are seriously flawed, and the musicianship is sufficiently peculiar on the whole as to lower the rating considerably.
This is the one!.......2002-08-24
If you want to hear the best of the best, this CD is it. These hymn arrangements are just beautiful and very touching. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys the choir and wants to feel a little closer to heaven. The choir seems to sing literally with one voice and you feel like they are singing just for you. Congratulations to the new conductor, Craig Jessop and all those who contributed to the quality that went into producing this CD.
A Must for the Sabbath.......2002-04-17
I LOVE IT!!! What better way to enjoy the Sabbath than to sing of the Lord's Praises with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir? This album is just the ticket! It's very powerful, and uplifting.
What? You mean I can only give this album five stars? But that doesn't even BEGIN to do it justice!
I love it. Truly a masterpiece!
A Must for Sabbath.......2002-02-05
If you only own one Mormon Tabernacle Choir CD, this is the one. It has creative arrangements of many favorite hymns, as well as the best recording of the Wilhousky Battle Hymn arrgmt that I have ever come across. The only downer: it has (another) recording of Simple Gifts, which has been beat to death by choirs in the last decade.
I especially love the 'Glory' pieces on it: Full of timpani, brass, and alleluias- one of those discs you turn all the way up and direct the stereo when noone is looking. I hope my neighbors like it too; they probably hear it quite a bit.

Album Description
Produced by the composer himself, this is the first recording of the original ensemble version of John Rutter's radiant Requiem. Written in 1985, the work is not a conventional setting of the Requiem Mass but comprises a personal selection of texts from the Catholic liturgy and the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. John Rutter maintains intimate ties with Clare College and many of his anthems are left as a musical legacy to the college. Among these are two simple, tender Blessings: Go forth into the world in peace, dedicated to the choir on the eve of its first tour to America; and A Clare Benediction, written as a gift to Rutter's alma mater. This recording is dedicated to the memory of Christopher Rutter.
Customer Reviews:
Simply the best copy of Rutter's Requiem!.......2007-06-27
In my opinion, this copy of Rutter's Requiem is the best one available. The orchestra does not overpower the chorus. The soprano soloist, Elin Manahan Thomas, is sublime.
Requiem.......2006-07-07
This CD has some of the most beautiful sacred music I have ever heard. Though a requiem is focused on a person's death, Rutter's Requiem leads you to consider the living Christ. "Requiem aeternam" and "Sanctus" are both uplifting and worshipful, and "Toccata in seven" is pure fun.
Absolutely Beautiful.......2006-06-09
Beautiful is one of those words that I don't use often and I don't use lightly, but this recording of John Rutter's Requiem and other choral works is worthy of description with the full weight of the word. All seven movements of his magnificent requiem are flowing with rich, delicate beauty. Rutter uses the full palate that the orchestra and the chorus has to offer such as the light sustained oboe throughout "The Lord is My Shepherd" and the bellowing low cello in "Out of the Deep." It's cool to hear a mix of Latin and English texts throughout the work. The soprano solo on "Pie Jesu" is breathtaking and the work closes with the sonorous, harmonicaly rich "Lux aeterna." The "Sanctus" is triumphant and the incredibly haunting "Agnus Dei" sends chills up the spine. The main theme introduced in the first movement is just beautiful. I am sure that if I heard Rutter's Requiem performed live and well, it would certainly bring tears to my eyes. It is a simply beautiful piece of music and is very well interpreted on this album. There is an excellent attention to the text and the shape of the phrases. A truly wonderful recording.
As for the other works on this album, they are just as impressive. The bombastic, sonorous "Arise, Shine" has enough G-force to plaster you to the back of your seat. It is wonderful to listen to the dialog between the chorus and the flute in "Musica Dei donum." "A Clare Benediction" is absolutely beautiful, as is "Go Forth into the World With Peace." The chords in "Come Down O Lord Divine" are incredible.
As for the organ pieces, the "Toccata in Seven" is bright and exciting, though a little heavy in some sections. The epic "Variations on an Easter Theme" is just astounding. Rutter takes us through a labyrinth of harmonic and rhythmic variation on a simple theme with wild obligados, fierce runs, dynamic shifts, tense harmonies, argumentative counterpoint and lyrical melodies. This is an amazingly exciting piece with two organists using all eight of the appendages between the two of them to make some amazing music.
This is quite a great collection of great sacred music from one of the best composers around today. Not to mention, you cannot beat Naxos' value. For under 10 bucks, this CD is a must.
A glorious piece.......2005-12-16
--Music--
Rutter's Requiem was written in 1985. In Catholic liturgy, a requiem is a Mass for the Dead, and as such involves strong tones both of mourning and loss as well as elements of hope and eternal life as reflected in Christian belief. Rutter states that, like Brahms and Faure, there are elements that depart from the traditional lines of a Catholic requiem. Rutter takes some of the texts from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Both the first and second movements, Requiem aeternam and 'Out of the Deep', set very dark, low, sombre tones. The use of strings at the beginning of 'Out of the Deep' is very effective, together with funeral-dirge like vocals. This contrasts greatly with the Pie Jesu, light and spiritual. The Sanctus is almost playful in aspect, and the Agnus Dei and Lux aeterna draw the listener higher and higher into the fullness of expectation of God's presence.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
This recording is produced by Rutter, but is performed by the London Sinfonia, a group that he has worked with but is not the usual Cambridge Singers. This performance compares favourably with Rutter's own group, with areas in which there is greater subtlety and depth.
Rutter brought me into the 20th century with this recording........2005-10-01
Prefering Classical, Baroque, & Romantic Music and particulary Requiems, I only gave this recording a chance because I could not find another requiem at the time, shortly after my parents had died. Having sung a few of Rutter's compositions in university I knew of his quality and flavor. To my surprise and complete amazement this piece and this particular recording was an incredible salve on the deepedst of open wounds. To this day, 10 years later, this is one of my top ten favorite albums. I have heard other renditions of Rutter's Requiem, however, none have had the intensity that this one has had, conducted by John Rutter, himself.
I feel this is the greatest of Rutters compositions and as of now , this is the best production of his Requiem I have heard yet. IMHO

It's good to have the clean-vowelled, fresh-voiced Cambridge Singers back in action with composer John Rutter, who demonstrates once again his considerable talents as a choral director. Here, he also had his work cut out arranging 15 of the tracks (and composing one other). Divided up into various categories, such as "the Eucharist" and "folk hymns," this album will delight the confirmed hymn enthusiast, provided that he or she doesn't insist on the pure, as-written product. Rutter's reworkings range from the bold and brassy (occasionally deliciously over the top--what would Martin Luther have thought of the naughtiness in "A mighty fortress is our God"?) to those of harp-accompanied simplicity, not least in the charming lines of "Be thou my vision." Several tasteful descants are models of their kind. There are some surprises at which to chuckle. For example, not the expected brass and organ job on "We plough the fields and scatter," but a dainty, tripping harp accompaniment to the familiar melody, such as Haydn might have wedded to a Scottish folksong. Occasional numbers might be too saccharine for some tastes, but there are cunningly placed samples of Gregorian chant, Tallis, and Gibbons to provide contrast and cleanse the palate. --Andrew Green

Having listened to this twice... It is difficult to find words for something so Glorious. It doesn't almost hurt, but I almost exploded in heavenly rapture several times.
You will need to get two. It is not music that you will want to keep to yourself.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-02
'The hymns heard on this disc span over 15 centuries of the history of Christian Europe, and have been chosen simply to make up a varied program which can be pleasant to hear.' Some items are accompanied by organ, some by harp where a lighter sound was more appropriate. Some are unaccompanied as in the Gregorian hymns, and five of the grandest hymns are given festival arrangements using brass, timpani, percussion and organ. Although the perspective of this album is Anglican,it must be noted that the Anglican hymn tradition has been notably eclectic. Hymnody is forever changing. 'This album does NOT attempt to reflect the most recent changes-the emergence of pop and folk-influenced worship songs and choruses has been well taken care of elsewhere, and time alone will tell whether there is any lasting worth in this most drastic upheaval of worship style.' Therefore, it is timely to reflect upon the immense riches of hymns built up over so many centuries, when they are at great risk of neglect. John Rutter has produced an amazing number of arrangements as well as original songs, and they are all first-rate. Choirs throughout the world (who are skilled enough to sing them)take great pleasure in working with his selections, and audiences, regardless of listening experience seem to enjoy them. They are tuneful, clever and unusual!!!
The Cambridge Singers number : 10 female sopranos,2 male and 4 female altos, 7 tenors and 8 basses. They sing extremely well with clear consonents and well-shaped vowels and plenty of gusto. I miss the boy sopranos that usually sing in the British choirs, but that's only a personal preference, and it surely is not Rutter's preference, because I have never known him to make use of them. A truly inspiring recording, nonetheless.
Another Rutter Keeper!.......2003-02-17
Rutter has won many fans throughout the world for his passionate, creative yet tasteful contributions to church music. Here is a hymn collection with several traditional choices along with Rutter originals.
Several comprise Rutter's remakes, which is most cases are very diginified and not at all distractive to the thrust of the original. The orchestration is superb, and the Cambridge Singers of course provide outstanding choral might.
Well worth consideration to the church music collection.
worship of god made mostglorius in this cd.......2002-04-30
i was 1st introduced to john rutters music on a radio program... when i 1st heard the arrangement of christ the lord is risen today presented in this cd i pictured a grand celebration of the solemn mass of the resurection of our lord and pictured in particular the grand procession i pictured this being celebrated... this hymn and cd does as best as humanly possible represent the great glory of god and does as its title suggests sing with the heavens and for you fellow traditionalists this is a strongly recomended cd
Heavenly Music.......2001-10-15
The hymns of SING, YE HEAVENS represent 1500 years of music in the Christian church. Pure and rich are these hymns by the Cambridge Singers with their perfect diction that leaves nothing for improvement and their tone quality that envelops the listener. The beauty of the harp, the organ, and the brass adds to the pleasure this CD brings to the listener's ear and heart.

hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16
i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

" O Paradiso!!"...LEONTYNE PRICE is a Paragon of PUCCINI in this Collection........2006-11-24
Diva assoluta American soprano LEONTYNE PRICE has enjoyed a long association and identification with the veristic and intensely passionate music of Verdi's heir, GIACOMO PUCCINI. In the recording studio Ms. Price was a supreme interpreter, able to limn his softest phrases with limpid tone (rivalled only by Caballe), ride over the heaviest of his orchestrations with a vocal amplitude given to few others (Callas,Tebaldi, Nilsson,& Freni), and not simply soar with ease to the uppermost regions of his music but sustain it also - singular to her alone!! Onstage Ms. Price performed Puccini's heroines successfully if infrequently (Minnie in FANICULLA ultimately proving to be uncongenial for her), with treasured outings as Liu (TURANDOT), Floria (TOSCA), Giorgetta (IL TABARRO), Manon (MANON LESCAUT), and Cio-Cio San (MADAMA BUTTERFLY), the Puccini role she sang onstage the most. In this recital, the great soprano sings arias not only from those operas but also includes music from LA RONDINE, EDGAR, LE VILLI, LA BOHEME, and GIANNI SCHICCI (IL TRITTICO), and a MADAMA BUTTERFLY duet with tenor Placido Domingo. WIthout question this is heavenly singing. Leontyne Price"s voice in 1972 (the year of this recording) had matured and thus displayed a darker, richer tonal panapoly. The results yielded a stronger middle, velvety in texture, and imbued with a throbbing, sensual warmth. Her lower voice, now breathier and at times, opaque nonetheless retained its unique timbre, and, as throughout her career, is deployed with dramatic relevance and impact. The soprano's upper voice -one of the true glories of Opera to this day- retains some of the liquid vibrato of her earlier career, but is largely replaced by a creamy, rounder, voluminous sound that has more thrust in dramatic moments, and yet can spin ethereal pianos, and still float soft high-lying phrases with the utmost in ease. The soprano's voice retains its appealing femininity, but is more womanly and knowing than before. Those attributes, wedded to her innate artistry produce one of the finest Puccini recitals on record today.
The BOHEME arias (Mimi) are delivered with a direct simplicity that is less characterful than some, but refreshingly uncloying either. Ms. Price builds to a glowing climax in both pieces, and we feel the bloom of love-discovered, then the anguish of love- defeated potently. She sings "Musetta's Waltz" without the overt "sexiness" and/or archness that usually makes this aria so mundane, but instead treats it as the outpourings of a genuinely confident, assured woman who knows her charms and is happy to vocally display them. The EDGAR aria is understandably rarely performed, with its wide-ranging tessitura and odd melodious flight. Here, Ms. Price sings passionately, with full-throated, ringing tone that gleams on top, but less fluidity in the lower regions. The RONDINE aria included in this collection is not the justly-famed Price specialty "Chi bel sogno", but a lilting waltz, sung wistfully with delicious spin and tonal beauty by the soprano. TOSCA's "Vissi D'arte", another Price gem from an opera she recorded twice (the aria numerous times throughout her career) is sung with a weightier, more dramatic approach than before, yet still replete with the trademark diminuendo Price fans wait for. The tessitura for MANON LESCAUT's music is considerably lower than most of his other output. Ms. Price performs the first aria with ease (she often sang it as an encore in recitals), more generalized than elsewhere in this recital, but lushly sung. However, "Sola perduta abbandonata" displays the diva's artistry as well as vocal prowess. She uses her full range to capture the desolation, terror, and despair of the hapless Manon, resulting in an intensely stirring portrayal that is indelible for this listener. The LE VILLI selection, also rarely performed, is from Puccini's first opera and is not particularly distinctive music. The soprano's approach is primarily vocal, and lushly sung. MADAMA BUTTERFLY's arias became classics in Ms. Price's career - her complete recording of this opera remains one of her finest studio operatic performances. "Un bel di vedremo" is sung here as a powerful declaration of faith, with plush vocalism aligned to the the heartbreaking narrative of the geisha. Ms. Price is joined by her most frequent tenor partner of the 70's, the great Spanish tenor Placido Domingo, for a stellar performance of the Act I duet "Bimba, bimba, non piangere" which finds both artists blending together in customary fashion. The tenor captures the youthful ardor of Pinkerton, and sings with intensity, anchored by the darkly rich, burnished sound that made him famous the world-over. Ms. Price's singing is riper here, missing the vulnerability and naivete of her earlier wondrous incantation. However, her voice is ever attenuated to the words, and her vocalism is plush throughout it. Leontyne Price deservedly had the honor of opening the MET season in 1962 - the first "Negro" artist to do so - and sang the role of Minnie, THE GIRL OF THE GOLDEN WEST. The role of Minnie has been referred to as "the Italian Brunhilde" with its reliance on a sturdy middle voice, and usually the property of dramatic sopranos (Kirsten and Steber excepted) - which Ms. Price was not. Nonetheless, the reviews after her opening were ecstatic garnering her the appellation "the Stradivarius of Singers" from the New York Times. However, the diva had been singing non-stop for the past (3) three years on the greatest stages of the world - Vienna/La Scala/Covent Garden/ Verona/San Francisco/Chicago and her glorious MET debut with (8) eight roles in that first season!! She also endured a potential Musician's strike which threatened the opening, and sang Beethoven's difficult "Abscheulicher" (FIDELIO) in between FANICULLA performances. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the diva lost her voice during the dramatic Act II "Card scene", and bravely declaimed her lines until the Act's end. Quite obviously, after some needed rest, Ms. Price regained her spectacular voice, and as demonstrated here, her ability to sing Minnie's fiendish music - capped by a stunning High C to punctuate it. GIANNI SCHICCI is perhaps best known for the aria "O mio babbino caro", a fixture for sopranos of every voice type in concerts. Like "Musetta's Waltz", this music seem to inspire banality and superficiality from most singers. Ms. Price sings the aria with glowing simplicity, tonally glorious with shimmery pianissimi in the upper voice to rival anyone in memory. To end this recital, RCA inserted (like the Butterfly duet) a previously recorded excerpt from another Price recording - PRIMA DONNA Volume 4. Ms. Price sings the role of the icy Princess Turandot in Puccini's last opera TURANDOT here with great success. One of opera's most demanding soprano arias - "In questa reggia" -usually stentorian in nature, is sung more lyrically by Ms, Price, whose overall treatment is more straightforward than most. Nevertheless, she's ultimately successful, capturing the extreme contempt that the implacable Turandot holds for men, and is able to proclaim her challenge with requisite power at the aria's climax, besting her Calaf (tenor Daniele Barioni) in their long-held high C at the aria's finale. Maestro Edward Downes conducts sensitively for Ms. Price throughout (he was one of her better conductors in her studio recital series), and the New Philharmonia Orchestra follows his guidance expertly.
This compilation, digitally re-mastered, with crisper, cleaner sonics, should be in the collection of any opera-lover, especially those who cherish the music of PUCCINI, and neophytes unfamiliar with his output and/or the splendor of LEONTYNE PRICE!! Get this one now.
