4 out of 5 stars Great movie, better soundtrack.......2007-05-19

I just recently saw this movie and the only thing I could think about afterwards was that I had to get this soundtrack. I'm not usually a big fan of movie soundtracks, but this cd is unlike any other out there, soundtrack or not. The use of strings and carnaval type instruments is completely unique and makes this a must by for any fan of music.

5 out of 5 stars great collection of unusual music.......2007-05-07

Rented the movie on reccomendation from Netflix, it was pretty good. But the music was the star of the show. The soundtrack follows the course of the movie pretty closely, it's kind of like listening to the movie. Each track brings to mind a specific scene in the movie. One of the highlights is the ecclectic treatment of Burt Bacharach's "Close to You". Most will remember the super-sweet Carpenter's version, but this interpretation was the main reason I bought the music. Unusual augmented chord progressions and almost minimalist format (complete with the mechanical background sounds made by the female jack-in-the-box-like, life-sized, mostly metal toy dressers) make the tune as captivating as in the movie when they 'convert' the trapped Helena into the black princess. Great music to play while relaxing, too.

5 out of 5 stars Supurb.......2007-03-08

This soundtrack is truly a delight to listen to. It ranges from quirky circus music to deep and melodic mysterious tunes. It is a great CD to relax to and to use as background music for most any relaxing time hanging out with friends.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-02-24

This is a very good soundtrack to a very good movie. The music is amazingly composed and is nice to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-01-17

This CD is excellent! All the music from the movie in its entirety, all the songs are complete songs, and the songs are all top notch compositions.

The John Michael Talbot Collection focuses on his solo work for the Sparrow record label. These widely variant songs are culled from The Lord's Supper, half of the double-disc Mass in D Minor, through to 1990's quietly contemplative The Hiding Place. There are pieces performed in the folk-blues idiom, symphonic and/or choral arrangements, as well as dips into Celtic music, Renaissance-inspired harmonies, ballet suites, and Catholic worship songs. Despite these seemingly disparate styles, almost all are given Talbot's distinctively melodious vocal treatment and nimble picking whether it be classical, rootsy, or a custom blend thereof. There are few others who so thoroughly create the space for reverence and contemplation. And as with his work with brother Terry, the music, much based on biblical text, complex structure, and theory, is heads and shoulders above even today's most winning Christian pop. --Paige La Grone

Excellent CD would highly recommend it. The selection is great and the songs are beautiful. The record label picked a wide selection of great songs from his massive music collection. His voice is so calming and the music is wonderful. A great CD for the person who is just starting a collection of Christian music.

John Michael Talbot's beautiful voice shines through each selection making the entire collection a peaceful & uplifting gift to the listener.

5 out of 5 stars So very peaceful.......2006-12-14

I actually bought this cd by chance. I was surfing on Amazon when I accidentally clicked on this album. I decided to listen to a few of the clips and immediately I knew I had to pick up this gem. Praise the Lord for music like this! In these times of cheesy commercialized songs, Talbot's music stands out with strong Biblical lyrics and haunting peaceful melodys. I just recently had surgery and during my recovery this album has brought me much comfort. I definitely recommend these 35 songs for your collection. Thank you.

4 out of 5 stars Great stuff, if not what one might expect..........2006-06-22

I have heard John Michael Talbot in concert a few times over the past several years and enjoyed a wonderful worship experience. Though his Catholicism has some clear distinctions from my own Protestant beliefs, I find that Talbot truly has the heart of a worshipper, which will connect with Christians of all stripes.

From those experiences, I bought this album, hoping to hear similar songs. Much to my surprise, most of the tracks on this double album are huge choral and orchestra pieces, rather than the accoustic solo work of his recent concert tours. At first, I was disheartened.

However, the album has really grown on me. Though not at all what I was expecting, this is great music nonetheless. The sound is somewhat dated, but the music is brilliantly written and wonderful performed. This isn't appropriate as simple background music like some of his more recent work, but it's a great album in its own right and presents a good collection of some of his earlier work. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2005-01-16

These 1941-1942 recordings are the only ones ever made of Eddie "Son" House playing with a band, and this 19-track disc collects all 15 songs originally issued on Biograph's "Delta Blues" album and adds four more tracks, none of which are sung by House ("Fo' Clock Blues", "Camp Hollers", an incomplete "Special Rider Blues", and the instrumental "Key Of Minor").

Folklorist Alan Lomax came to Mississippi in late August 1941, bringing with him a 300-pound "portable" disc-cutting machine, and cut five acetate masters - the first four tracks on this album plus "Delta Blues".
Now, these cuts may not quite match the power of House's ferocious 1930 Paramount recordings, but barely anything does, and these are tremendous recordings in their own right.
Perhaps the chatter of the other three musicians on the first three tracks, and the sound of Joe Martin picking his mandolin, dulls the raw intensity of Son House's music a little, but you can still hear why Muddy Waters was so much in awe of Son House, stating that "back where I came from, down in the Delta, Son House was the king!"

The 1941 recordings were cut in the back room of Clack's country store in Robinsonville by Lake Cormorant in Mississippi, with guitarist Willie Brown (another former playing partner of Charley Patton), "Fiddlin'" Joe Martin - who actually played mandolin - and harpist Leroy Williams. At one point, you can actually hear a train passing by outside.

The remaining numbers (which include a longer version of "The Jinx Blues") were cut the following summer, and on these tracks, House performs alone. This is where the power and intensity of House truly shines through, showcasing what an effective guitar player he really was. Son House may not have been Charlie Christian, but his loud, grinding, strongly rhytmic playing, filled with wailing slide riffs, was the perfect background for his huge voice and emotionally charged singing.

Among the highlights of this collection are "Delta Blues", superbly performed with only Leroy Williams backing House up, "Low Down Dirty Dog Blues" and "Depot Blues", which features some of the most impressive guitar playing House ever comitted to tape, "Walking Blues" (especially the 1941 version), and "The Jinx Blues", set to an effective shuffle beat. Just listen to the way House snaps his bass string against the fretboard!
This collection is one of the all-time great documents on early Delta blues. The sound is as good as can be expected, and this is a worthy testament to one of the most important figures in modern popular music.

5 out of 5 stars Son House is the real deal. Listen and learn.......2004-03-03

Son House taught Robert Johnson the slide blues. Son House taught Muddy Waters. When Son House started performing at Blues festivals again in the mid 1960s, some of Muddy's younger band members would start to go off for a smoke or whatever when the old man came on stage. Muddy wouldn't let them. Muddy Waters would tell all his band members to be quiet and pay attention when the man played because even compared with Muddy, this was the real deal.

Rediscovered in Rochester, New York, relearning to play the guitar, (how this country abuses the masters that come from its people, particularly its Black people), put back on the stage by the folk revival's blues section.

People outside of the blues life focus on the guitar playing or the rhythm of the singing, but where the power comes from is the feeling and the words that are put together, the life and the meaning of the blues. Son House in his youth and his old age, on this and his other sides, always gave it.

So Like Muddy Waters, I would like you to know that
Son House is the real deal.
Listen and learn

5 out of 5 stars Son House, King of the Delta.......2002-09-13

Son House is the most important and influential Delta Bluesman to ever live he was a major influence to Muddy Waters & Robert Johnson and every one else including me. Buy this C.D. it is very essential stuff this is hardcore Delta Blues there are some trks with Son House in a band setting with Willie Brown and others (perfect example of what a DeltaBlues jam session probally sounded like). These are field recordings and I mean they were actually recorded outside on trk.4 "Shetland Pony Blues" you actually hear a steam locomotive (train) go buy in the background. If your a aspiring blues guitar player get this if your a fan of the Blues your C.D. collection is seriously lacking if this is not part of it. also get "Masters of the Delta Blues, The Friends of Charlie Patton" all of Son Houses earliest recorings are on there (1930) with some other Delta Blues Legends

5 out of 5 stars The Real Blues--Raw and Dirty.......2002-05-03

This collection is essential to any blues collection...you cannot truly appreciate the blues until you've heard these recordings.

Son House is my favorite blues performer. No one--not even his proteges Robert Johnson or Muddy Waters--could match him when it came to the raw emotion. Sure, Robert inspired later blues-rock giants like the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Stevie Ray Vaughn (to name a few...) and Muddy revolutionized the blues by 'inventing' electricity. But this collection, when coupled with the album "The Complete Recorded Works of Son House & the Great Delta Blues Singers" (ASIN: B000000J26--recorded in 1930; another essential disc), offers the listener a true glimpse into history.

The first few tracks include House singing and playing guitar with his band: Willie Brown (who has since attained legendary status as his name is mentioned in Robert Johnson's lyrics; he was also was the central character in the 1986 movie "Crossroads") on harmonica, and Fiddlin' Joe Martin on mandolin. These songs are amazing. The only word I can use to describe House's slide guitar technique is FEROCIOUS. His mixture of slams and slaps, when combined with the shouts, moans, and grunts of his vocals, is nothing short of frightening. "Walking Blues"--which, of course, was a hit for both Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters but was written by House--is one particular standout. It is nearly seven minutes long (House is famous for his "epic" performances...in concert, his songs were known to exceed twenty minutes), a relentless barrage of blues. "Levee Camp Moan" is another strong point. The rhythms and shouts are incomparable.

Perhaps the best analogy is "a frontal assault on the soul".

The remaining songs are House's solo efforts, although the striking force has not deminished at all. In fact, they may be even more powerful--it's hard to believe that only ONE guy is singing...!

When House was rediscovered during the '60s blues revival, he recorded his first and only studio album in 1965 ("Father of the Delta Blues"--ASIN: B000002877) for the Columbia label. Most who have heard of Son House know him based on these recordings alone. There is no arguement that this is a magnificent album--the emotional quality has only increased with is age. But while the sound quality is definitely better than these early field recordings (mono recordings into a single microphone in the stockyard of a train depot--you can even hear railway sounds in the background!!), House's old age hindered the ferocity of his slide guitar playing, forcing his tempo to slow down. If you want to hear the true capabilities of the man who I think is the greatest bluesman who ever lived, you must listen to these Library of Congress recordings (and then check out "...and the Great Delta Blues Singers").

5 out of 5 stars Son House -- Library of Congress sessions.......2000-04-12

Son House has, arguably, the best blues voice, ever. (His rivals are his pupil, Robert Johnson, and BB King). This is his best album, ever. Great voice, great words, great guitar, and (on one cut) a train in the background. Recorded sound quality is adequate -- better than most for the period. This is one of the five or ten indispensible blues recordings of the twentieth century--Changed how I thought about music.

- Blues ain't nothin'but a lowsown shakin' chill, - If you ain't had them, I hope you never will.

5 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Collection of Heartfelt Songs.......2004-03-18

This 30-song collection of field recordings from 1934-1946 accurately reflect the role music played in the the everyday lives of rural America. When you listen to these songs, not only do you hear the joys and fears and sorrows of the performers' lives, you often hear in the background children laughing, dogs barking, clocks ticking, trucks driving by. These are not professional musicians, but real people who deliver their songs with an intensity and honesty you can't find in the recording studio.

Each performer has his own unique story. Turner Junior was a blind street musician who accompanies himself on harmonica on the spiritual "When I Lay My Burden Down." He philosphically tells Alan Lomax that when you leave this earthly life "you'll see with a spiritual eye." A young Ora Dell Graham was attending the Drew Colored High School (which also schooled elementary students) where she recites a couple of playground rhymes. The liner notes tell us she would not live to see her twenty-first year. She was killed during a holdup.

This collection also covers a wide range of the American musical experience. "Rock Island Line" is performed by a group of convicts at the Arkansas Cummins State Farm. The traditional folk song "Soldier's Joy" is performed (in Lomax's words) by "two blind men and three day laborers." "Creek Lullaby" is sung a capella by a young Native American girl identified only as Margaret, whose haunting vocal is made all the more memorable by singing the song in Creek. Fiddler Jess Morris was a working cowboy in Texas when he recorded "Goodbye, Old Paint."

Each song on this collection has a fascinating story behind it, and the accompanying 40-page booklet tells them all in loving and meticulous detail. The importance of the exhaustive work of John and Alan Lomax can not be overstated. These historical recordings would be lost to time if not for their efforts. It is impossible to listen to these recordings without being moved. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Comfort food for the ears..........2000-08-07

Haunting ballads, stories and lively dance tunes sung by "regular people" (including Woody Guthrie) provide a musical history of rare breadth. If you are looking for slickness and glitz, this CD is not for you. If, on the other hand, you enjoy honest music, are interested in folk history, and perhaps are a closet (or shower) singer yourself, you will enjoy this glimpse into the souls of people whose spirits fill these songs.

An added bonus is the booklet that is included. It provides background on the Library of Congress's Folk Archive and the field recordings done by John, Alan, and Elizabeth Lomax in the late 30's to mid-40's. It also gives a short song and artist history for each track. The fact that one child singer died before her 21st birthday makes her song especially haunting.

Many of us live comfortably insulated, yuppified, sanitized lives. These recordings remind us where we came from. Most importantly, they demonstrate the power of music, that it feeds our souls and gives us strength. We all have that power to make music. Some of us have just forgotten how to do it, or have been told we should not try to sing or play. These songs help us remember on many levels, and show us that making music is a blessing we are all capable of enjoying.

4 out of 5 stars A Treasury of Library of Congress Field Recordings.......2000-03-29

I purchased this CD so I could listen to Sea Lion Woman, a song I heard during the final credits to The General's Daughter. The other 29 songs were an added bonus. Some of these songs, recorded in the 30's and 40's, are a real joy to listen to. Also included with the CD is a small booklet telling you about each song. To hear "Pullin' the Skif" and "Shortenin' Bread", only to learn that the young singer died in a hold-up she perpetrated before her twenty-first birthday just grabs the heart.

When folklorist Alan Lomax made these epic 1938 recordings of Jelly Roll Morton's reminiscences and piano playing, he was creating the first great oral documentation of early jazz. This material has never been issued with the care, sensitivity and completeness that it gets here, with the complete interviews and musical performances sequenced over seven CDs in the order in which they took place. Morton was almost as great a raconteur as he was a musician, and his accounts of New Orleans in the early years of the 20th century--from bordellos to riots to funeral parades--are vivid, bawdy, and sometimes hilarious. His accounts of the music and his performances, from "King Porter Stomp" to the lengthy "Murder Ballad," provide a brilliant window on the mechanics and progress of jazz in its earliest years. The sound restoration is excellent and the complete package--cover art by R. Crumb and a book with an essay by John Szwed and extensive photographs--befits a document of this significance. An eighth CD excerpts interviews Lomax conducted in 1949 with various New Orleans musicians (most notably Johnny St. Cyr) reminiscing about Morton and the early years of jazz. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Even when he did not invent jazz in the year 1904 ............2007-01-19

Nearly every jazz-friend has heard about the legendary recordings, Jelly Roll Morton made for the Library of Congress, and that there he declared to have invented this music in 1904 or so....
I play jazz as an amateur since more than 50 years, and I never expected to be able to have these recordings. Now I hear his voice, I hear him play and declare, what he plays. And suddenly an important time of history of jazz, an important musician and composer got to be living for me. It's great, and I wish that every oldtime-jazz musician would listen to the stories he tells.
And I think: it does not matter, whether they are true or not - they in any case are full of a musicians life.

In was in March 1940 that Alan Lomax, then a young folklorist at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., brought Woody Guthrie into a recording studio at the Department of the Interior. What emerged from three days of sessions is one of the purest documents of Americana ever released. Originally appearing as a three-LP set, this collection of "songs and conversation" features Guthrie classics such as "Do Re Mi," "Pretty Boy Floyd," "They Laid Jesus Christ in His Grave," and "I Ain't Got No Home." Interspersed are autobiographical reminiscences of his boyhood in Oklahoma and his freight-train-riding hobo days as well as his biting, wry observations of the effects on the common man of everything from the Depression to crooked politicians. That the U.S. government paid for this is as ironic as it is miraculous. --Billy Altman

4 out of 5 stars bound for glory.......2006-04-02

This review is being used to describe several of Woody Guthrie's recordings. Although I have listened to most of his songs and recordings these represent those that best represent his life's poltical and musical work.

My musical tastes were formed, as were many of those of the generation of 1968, by `Rock and Roll' music exemplified by the Rolling Stones and Beatles and by the blues revival, both Delta and Chicago style. However, those forms as much as they gave pleasure were only marginally political at best. In short, these were entertainers performing material that spoke to us. In the most general sense that is all one should expect of a performer. Thus, for the most part that music need not be reviewed here. Those who thought that a new musical sensibility laid the foundations for a cultural or political revolution have long ago been proven wrong.

That said, in the early 1960's there nevertheless was another form of musical sensibility that was directly tied to radical political expression- the folk revival. This entailed a search for roots and relevancy in musical expression. While not all forms of folk music lent themselves to radical politics it is hard to see the 1960's cultural rebellion without giving a nod to such figures as Dave Van Ronk, the early Bob Dylan, Utah Phillips, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and others. Whatever entertainment value these performers provided they also spoke to and prodded our political development. They did have a message and an agenda and we responded as such. That these musicians' respective agendas proved inadequate and/or short-lived does not negate their affect on the times.

As I have noted in my review of Dave Van Ronk's work when I first heard folk music in my youth I felt unsure about whether I liked it or not. As least against my strong feelings about the Rolling Stones and my favorite blues artist such as Howling Wolf and Elmore James. Then on some late night radio folk show here in Boston I heard Dave Van Ronk singing `Come All You Fair and Tender Ladies' and that was it. From that time to the present folk music has been a staple of my musical tastes. From there I expanded my play list of folk artists with a political message.

Although I had probably heard Woody's `This Land is Your Land' at some earlier point I actually learned about his music secondhand from early Bob Dylan covers of his work. While his influence has had its ebbs and flows since that time each succeeding generation of folk singers still seems to be drawn to his simple, honest tunes about the outlaws, outcasts and the forgotten people that made this country, for good or evil what it is today. Since Woody did not have a particularly good voice nor was he an exceptional guitar player the message delivered by his songs is his real legacy.

Woody's relationship with the American Communist Party while no secret is not widely known. Even Bob Dylan, a worshipper of Woody's in his youth, was not aware of it. What is interesting is that the subjects of his songs fairly closely reflect the party line as it changed to reflect the winds blowing from Moscow. Woody's best work is reflected in the Popular Front style of ` This Land is Your Land' when the party developed its class collaborationist policy with the Rooseveltian Democratic Party and accordingly all liberals were good fellows and true. The Hitler-Stalin Pact was not good news for his style. Political differences between us aside, listen to his recordings and learn about hard times and struggle in an eraly period.

3 out of 5 stars I would NOT begin with this set.......2005-10-09

As a historical document, indispensable. Woody's first recordings! As a listening experience, sometimes a little tough going, sometimes even frustrating. Poor micorphone placement compromises clarity of Woody's voice, both speech and singing. Sometimes a bad room echo obscures it even more, Woody doesn't always seem to be next to the microphone. Sound levels not adjusted when he's speaking as opposed to blowing harp and stumming away. Etc.

These also are much looser performances than "Dust Bowl Ballads" (his seminal album, recorded a month after this Library Of Congress recording) or the amazing 1944-49 recordings for Mose Asch (the Asch Recordings box set)-Woody is mellow and laid back, frequently blows guitar chord changes to some of his best songs....no big deal! We still love him! But the versions of most songs are better on "Dust Bowl Ballads" (exception: Talkin' Dust Bowl) and especially the Moe Asch recordings (which is what I recommend starting out with). It's great-fascinating-hearing long extended conversations with Woody Guthrie and Alan Lomax (even though it's not exactly loose conversation....it was intended to be broadcast as a radio series) It's conversational.....long and drawling. It's beautiful. Woody suddenly and unexpectedly describing his childhood tragedies is riveting.

Three discs of loose version of song, followed by 5 minutes of conversation-sometimes it requires concentrated attention to really get the most out of. Sometimes Alan himself joins in and sings with Woody.....it's that loose.

If you've never gotten the Asch Recordings four disc set, that's the one I'd start with, unbelievable. All 4 discs are indispensable. Woody with Cisco Houston is one of musics great rewards, and he's on a lot of that set. Add to that the equally indispensable Dust Bowl Ballads and you have the absolute essential Woody Guthrie. After you've got those two under your belt, then I would pick up these Library of Congress recordings, I place it as number 3.

A side note, Woody's harp playing is beautiful, I never see anyone mention that.

Also, you can't program out the interviews So each track starts with a song and has up to 6 minutes of conversation.

PS-I hope this doesn't sound like a bad review, because it's not! It's an amazing documentary.

4 out of 5 stars Library of Congress Recordings - Woody Guthrie.......2005-09-19

This is a great CD as far as the music and Woody's comments about his life and his songs. The interviewer, Alan Lomax, is difficult to hear, probably due to the placement of the microphone. I am glad that I bought the CD.

2 out of 5 stars Library of Congress Recordings, Vols. 1-3 Woody Guthrie.......2002-02-20

A good set if you wish to listen to a person question Woody.
Because of Arlo, 20 years ago I went to see a 1 man show of Woody Guthrie. The person that did the 1 man show did a great job. I say this because he made me want to know Woody's songs.
This set was okay. I got to listen to Woody speak some of his thoughts.
But for Woody music --- The Asch Recordings are excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Library of Congress Recordings.......2000-05-03

I have owned these recordings for nearly five years and I have yet to grow tired of hearing Woody speak and sing. While the recordings document his music, they also illuminate a significant moment in American history. Woody Guthrie both witnessed and validated the myth propogated by Steinbeck in "The Grapes of Wrath." Gurthrie's commentary is as rich with red politics as his music; and while he speaks without pretention, his ideas are sophisticated and his deliverery is calculated and genius. I have probably listened to these recordings a hundred times, each time another layer of Woody's mind and era is exposed.

While there's certainly a whole lot more to the music of Scotland, we all want to hear the bagpipes, so it's a nice touch that Alan Lomax's exploration of the Scottish tradition starts with a brief rant by the Glasgow Police Band. This is followed by a solo song by one of the great voices of the nation, Ewan McColl, who contributes a number of traditional songs to the collection. Other a cappella songs include "Glenlogie" by John Strachan, Blanche Wood's "Portnockie Girl," and some "diddling songs" by Hamish Henderson. More informal are a track by a community band and singing group recorded live in the streets of Selkirk, some remarkable singing from a group of women in Glasgow, and a church choir in Dormach. The album is divided pretty equally between songs from the Lowlands and the Highlands, 43 often-brief pieces that preserve the old music in time. Notes by Lomax have been updated (and toned down from Lomax's usual overly effusive style) by Hamish Henderson and Margaret Bennett, and include Gaelic text and English translations where necessary. --Louis Gibson

4 out of 5 stars Bad Amazon Experience.......2006-07-27

I tried to purchase this and another cd using a gift card. I got an email saying that they would have to be shipped separately. A week later I got an email saying that they were "undeliverable"! Since I didnt think there was going to be a problem when I first placed the order I trashed the gift card code # so I lost the $ that I used for the purchase. So to sum up- No cds no gift card, thanks Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful and historical.......2001-11-17

This CD is just about perfect. In fact, it's only defect is also an advantage. Alan Lomax attempted to cram every corner of Scotland's musical tradition onto a single CD. This is a monumental task, and only partly successful.

On the one hand, pretty much every corner of Scotland's musical tradition is represented. Police bands, boy's choirs, professional folk singers, pub carousers, kid's jump rope games, jacobite battle songs, love songs, port-a-buel, waulking songs, English and Gaelic all find there way onto this CD. It truly is amazing how many songs and styles are represented. What a musical country!

On the other hand, "packed" is what you feel like after listening. The songs move quickly from one to the other, with little or no space. A jaunty accordion tune moves into a soulful Gaelic ballad without a breath, then into a peppy English tune with full choir and then into a drunken military rant. It can be a little too much to take in on one sitting.

Still, it is hard to complain about this musical treasure. For Scottish folk music, there is no equal to this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars absolutely amazing.......2005-05-22

Very very nice. Experimental down tempo just the way I like it. I had the pleasure of seeing these guys play here in Orlando and they blew my mind. I want all of their music in my collection.

    Peace... :*)

4 out of 5 stars Great but beware TAL fans: really only an EP.......2003-07-03

Ever I saw The Album Leaf in concert open for Sigur Ros a few years ago, I've been mesmorised by the band's sound. (In studio, this is Jimmy LaValle by himself.) This CD (some might call it an EP) is the follow-up to their great 2001 album "One Day I'll Be on Time".

This split CD (with a band called On!Air!Library) contains 3 new TAL songs (17 min.) of the same dream-like instrumental music found on "One Day". Track 2 "Essex" is reminiscent of/musically the sequel to "Audio Pool" from "One Day", and the best track. Track 3 "Lamplight" (7+ min) is very reflective, and works quite well.

I'm not sure why TAL chose (or was required) to issue this split CD with On!Air!Library (which songs are not up to par with TAL), but nevermind. Until we get a proper follow-up full-fletched album to "One Day", this will do.

    4 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2003-04-28

I already knew about the Ablum Leaf and love everything he has done. The music gets to the heart of the matter without any words. The first 3 songs on this split will certainly please anyone. Beautiful and wonderful compositions. The second part of the split with On!Air!Library! is a really good introduction into the sound of that band. They are a little bit more experimental with sounds and structure than the Album Leaf. The overall sound of the split cd is wonderful. It is definetly something that will be in constant rotation for me.
