It's fair to assume that if you're a Seal fan, you prefer your pop shot through with substance. Using that as a guiding principle, you'll want to glide right into Best: 1991-2004 where you will encounter, throughout two discs and 27 songs, scarcely a second of musical fluff. All the expected goosebump-raisers come on disc one--"Don't Cry" follows "Prayer for the Dying" follows "Kiss from a Rose" follows "Crazy"--and they're interspersed with deeper cuts from Seal IV such as "Get It Together" and "Loves Divine" as well as a couple of covers that, in a lesser vocalist's hands, might have been catastrophic. Seal plays it subtle and sweet and Burt Bacharach's "Walk on By," sidestepping any instinct to belt, and the help he gets from Mikey Dread on Echo & the Bunnymen's "Lips Like Sugar" settles the song into a snazzified reggae-pop celebration. (Also included is Seal's soaring cover of Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle," which proved his prowess as a cover artist with its chart success). Though "best" collections aren't normally upheld for their surprise elements--nobody likes a package that challenges with armloads of new stuff--disc two pulls off a neat stunt. It's a complete acoustic album, again encompassing the major radio hits but stretching to include tracks like the impossibly tender "Touch" and the meltingly gorgeous "Colour." Their unplugged presentation, with the artist on guitar, sets an up-close-and-personal tone that suits Seal. More to the point, it suits his fans, who'll take all the intimacy with the singer-slash-heartthrob they can get. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

Multiplatinum selling, Grammy winning, critically acclaimed Seal unveils his first greatest hits collection with Seal Best 1991-2004. But there's even more-along with the single-CD edition, with original album versions of 12 of his hits and best-loved tracks plus a cover song newly recorded by Seal ("Walk on By"), a double-CD package adds a disc of newly recorded acoustic versions of nine of those cuts (and four others). For fans of the pop, dance, urban and adult contemporary, Seal Best 1991-2004 is the quintessential Seal experience.

5 out of 5 stars I love this music!.......2007-07-20

I'm usually buy only R&B, but I decided to try a different type of an artist. I love listening to Seal! His style is cool, unique and very sexy. Definately a Seal fan!

5 out of 5 stars I love love love this guy! .......2007-03-16

This album is one I can play over and over and not get tired of. His music is fun, inspirational, romantic and just beautiful. Highly recommended for those who just want to relax and comtemplate things with a nice sound in background, or turned up loud, it makes you smile and want to dance.

5 out of 5 stars Seal it with a Kiss.......2007-03-11

Nobody does it better. All of Seal's greatest hits in ONE CD. Does it get any better than that?

4 out of 5 stars "Greatest Hits" album could have been "greater".......2007-03-08

I would consider myself among the top 31 (arbitrary number, of course) Seal fans in the known world, and this greatest hits album is dynamic because it's Seal, but could have been better with a few missing songs. "Newborn Friend" is a lesser known hit to those who may not be as well-versed in Seal, and it definitely should have been included. It's one of his finest works and a far cry from "Kiss from a Rose" or "Crazy", his two most well-known hits. Also, a track or two extra from "Human Beings" would have been nice. I'm not sure why Seal seems hell bent on ignoring this album, which I still prefer over Seal IV, for some reason. He doesn't even seem to perform off of it much in concert. I could have done without "Lips Like Sugar", too. It just seems like filler. For what it's worth, though, the acoustic album that comes with the special edition of the greatest hits disc is stellar and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Now how about Seal V?

5 out of 5 stars essential seal.......2007-02-06

if you like Seal, this is a great compilation to add to your collection. always relaxing yet refreshing, I listen to this CD along with music by Sting, Sarah McLachlan, Phil Collins & Peter Gabriel for a nice afternoon of relaxation with my MMOs or RPGs like Sims2.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Value.......2007-06-08

This 2-disc CD from Seal is wonderful. I love having the choice between orchestrated and acoustic selections. I didn't know too much about Seal until I heard his Kiss From a Rose song. I was hooked. I bought the CD and suprise, I recognized every song on it! I just never knew who performed them until I bought the CD. If you're a Seal fan, you need this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Good inspirational listening.......2007-03-08

If you like Seal's music, this is a definite "must have." I purchased it, because I didn't want all of his individual albums, yet wanted to be able to listen to his greatest hits and follow along. It's one of those CDs you pop in the car when you've had a stressful day, and after listening to a few songs, you are reenergized, revitalized, and uplifted.

5 out of 5 stars Golden Collection.......2006-02-23

This is a great collection of his greatest hits. I have found that I enjoy listening to this album all the time. I hope you enjoy it like I do.

3 out of 5 stars Frustrating.......2005-09-10

Best of albums are almost always a way for a record company to earn some quick bucks because the cost of producing them is practically nothing. In this case Warner Brothers adds a 2nd disk with new material, but for the price of a 2nd albumn. If you're a Seal fan you already have most of disk 1 so you'e paying a steep premium for everything else. That said, the 2nd disk is what is most disappointing. Yes, it's new versions of some great Seal songs and if you're a Seal fan you'll want them, but after comparing it to the truly accoustic Seal: The Accoustic Session, these versions seem barely "accoustic" at all. As has been the problem with some of Seal's later work, overproduction buries his talent in blanket of technically well-done, but marginally meaningful sound. What made Seal popular and famous is the passion and emotion of his voice. That should be front and center in an "accoustic" album. For whatever reasons Trevor Horn keeps complicating what should be simple and powerful.
At least get the version with the DVD audio. As I said, this release is technically well done and that's the best way to appreciate it.

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2005-08-21

If you're into Seal, I'd recommend this collection to ya'. It's well rounded and an easy listen.

5 out of 5 stars Remarquable audio quality in 5.1.......2007-05-07

I have recently upgraded my hifi system with high end (expensive) audio components (speakers, amp, pre-amp, ...) and I am looking for the best recording available is DTS or Digital 5.1.
This Seal CD is remarkable in quality. One of the best sounding 5.1 recordings along with the latest Eagles.

5 out of 5 stars There's nothing like Seal.......2007-01-15

This is a great collection to hight all the high points of his career. I still recommend some of the albums, because each collection is a work unto itself. However, if you are looking to get the core essentials, this compilation will work perfectly.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing DVD-Audio !!.......2007-01-02

I bought this package to try out the DVD-Audio version in our Acura ELS Surround Sound System and it was AMAZING. I was skeptical of the car dealer hype, but the sound quality was unbelievable compared to the CD version. The DVD-Audio version is a masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent voice!.......2006-11-10

This guy can sing. I enjoyed all the songs of his that have been on the radio but the ones that weren't were kind of boring. The DVD that came with this package isn't worth the extra bucks plus they didn't include the "Kiss From a Rose" video.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it !!.......2005-08-25

This is an incredible CD. I have never heard "Walk on by" in a better mix. Seal is at his best. It is cool how these songs can be rediscovered and gets to be so enjoyable. If you like Seal, you will certainly appreciate this CD. I have particularly liked "Touch" and "Colour". The acoustic versions are awesome

Back behind the decks after 2003's self-produced 76, Armin Van Buuren's 2-disc A State of Trance 2004 jumps back into giant thumps and epic dance textures. 76 had a relatively soft touch, in tune with the DJ's often-stated admiration for the music of Jean-Michel Jarre, but this mix is peak-heavy, designed to leave a dance floor light-headed and dreamy. Set loose with a crate full of wax once again, he lets the high end do the work, then judiciously drops massive beats to rattle your sub-woofers. Disc 1's "Signs From The Universe" uses the strategy especially well, with a swarming keyboard build that gets swallowed by a dark, rumbling rhythm. Van Buuren goes velvety smooth on disc 2, but doesn't forget the need for contrast; "Totally Fascinated" is darkly subterranean in parts, yet balanced by the song's sensual keyboard lift. While there's nothing groundbreaking here by any means, Van Buuren's approach makes for perfect sunny day music before nightfall brings out the heavier, more sinister spinners. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Turned me on to trance.......2007-05-29

Literally had never listened to techno or trance ever before and Disc 1 of this album made me a lifetime fan. Disc 2 is very solid as well, but the first is absolutely epic. The version I have was acquired through clandestine means and I liked it enough to actually purchase a copy.

You haven't lived until you've driven 15-20 miles over the speed limit on the freeway or a country backroad, at night, alone (passengers can ruin a good song with "conversation"), with all the windows open and with this CD at high volume.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant cd. It's in my top 3........2007-05-17

I love ASOT 2004. Listen to it all the time. Real talent went into this CD.

I didn't like ASOT 2006 and I just listened to ASOT 2005 and hated that one. 2005 must have been thrown together over a 3 day weekend or something.

4 out of 5 stars Stand Out Tracks, What this album sound like.......2007-04-01

I own this state of trance mix as well as 05 and 06. Armin's track selection is usually pretty decent and his mix is on track. His style will throw alot of ppl off. It's very mellow and euphoric, starts off slow and gradual. The shortest track on cd 1 is 5 minutes. More for chillin' than for clubbing. The standout tracks on cd 1 would be Airwave's Lady Blue(original beat), your trademark trance song. Oceanlab's Satellite (original above & beyond remix) has a excellent buildup, your trademark club anthem female vocal trance song. It's done again with Armin's own Burned with Desire (Rising Star Remix). I'm a big fan of Female Vocals and those 2 tracks deliver.

cd 2 is the same, the set doesn't pick up til Michael Burns' The Ambience, and flows right into Peter Martin's Perfect Wave, spine tingling ecstacy of a euphoric track, the track alone is why you should buy the album, it's the epitimy of how a good trance song should be. Oakenfold included this song in his Creamfields mix but it's more for the club mix doesn't come close to Armin's easy going and smooth buildup which was what Martin had in mind when producing this song. Then comes Mono's Rise another non vocal hit, this one will get you dancing,

5 out of 5 stars ZRODN.......2007-01-08

This old version compilation is cutting edge with good sound rotation well played by Armin. The newer state of trance compilations have different sound formats which is very upsetting since he has a huge artist list under his labels such as M.I.K.E. and Kamil Polner. He should take these two artists and blare a non stop live compilation on each artist individually he will make huge loot since these two artists mentioned are more musicians and fully understand proper sound format, its issues with live performances, comprehensive knowledge on sound equipment; its strain on pitch and or amplification;, and mood swings with party revelers and open auditoriums pack those locations play loud and good music make massive loot and live large god dam it.

4 out of 5 stars ASOT 2004 is one of the great trance compilation of the 2004.......2006-05-20

Hi guys,
The ASOT 2004 compilation received the award for the BEST COMPILATION CD for the 2004. This is a proove that the CD have a lot of quality. You just have to forget about commercial stuff you will do not find the same things of this CD. And be aware that the tracks have a style of DEEP TRANCE, and sometimes you dont know if the track have change or not, but this is real cool when you put the CD, seat down, relax, and let the trance takes you.

To understand this review, take a look at the reviews of the other volumes in this series...
Some of the music on this series is so weird and beautiful that the composers should be grateful that it is released here. They should think of this series as a sampler which might atract us, the general public, into further investigation of their work, which we most probably would have never had the chance to hear it or become aware of its existence or of the composers/artists. Don't be so greedy... for I believe you have been done a favor. The same goes for the other volumes of this series. TWO THUMBS UP!

Damn... Damn IT! Why is Ibiza so flippin far away? I think I would have fainted of joy to have been at this live set. It's right next to UR Chapter 1 in my oppinion. If you know what trance is and you don't have UR Chapter 1 and Armada At Ibiza.. then your a damn fool!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite CD from Armin Van.......2006-07-13

Armin Van Buuren is a very good DJ. Definately one of the better ones out there and this is his best album. Even though it's live, and I usually hate live CDs (except for this one and DJ Irene's Live at Spundae, where DJ Irene shows us she discovered trance), this is the Armin CD I listen to the most. The State of Trance series is pretty good too but this album is consistently great.
If you like this I recommend you try In Trance We Trust, Special Collectors Edition by DJ Cor Fijneman, Creamfields by Paul Oakenfold and the In Search of Sunrise series by DJ Tiesto.

5 out of 5 stars Get THIS and State of Trance 2004 + 2005 and check out the other greats listed below..........2006-02-24

Armin Van Buuren is the best thing I have been listening too as of spring 2005, still yet not finishing coming to grips with all the mixes on 2004's State of Trance, State of Trance 2005 is absolutely more of the same, and so is this, and that is a very good thing. While trance is certainly moving towards domestic radio and home culture entertainment, break beats now the new outdoor exercise activity of the disco halls, Van Buuren mixes like a radio DJ (and hah, he is a very good one!) to the long distance lorry driver or the security guard who has just come home from work, or the mini group of friends that are looking for the kind of trance that might give them another two hours of life before it is all over, Van Buuren has a nice balance of stuff that will impress the more you listen to it, and this requires you to play the thing even if you do not like it the first time round (and believe me, trance would not be so good if it was not for this effort we make), Van Buuren is really a DJ to behold, much like James Holden or Ferry Corsten, these three names are the new Paul Van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold or DJ Tiesto. This is great trance that is getting better every progressive year. DJ Tiesto really is responsible for this direction, PVD needed a new Politics of Dancing and gave us Vol. 2, Oakenfold's Creamfields is very good and worth getting, Tiesto still has his sunrise series. Anyway this might not be the best start to trance music, but it is some of the very best out there.

Get all the State of Trance CDs, Collect DJ Tiesto, try James Holden Balance 005, Don't forget Mark Schulz - Miami '05, Paul Oakenfold's Creamfields of course PVD's new The Politics of Dancing 2. This is enough to keep that iPod battery running out for the next year or so...

4 out of 5 stars Unique and enjoyable recording.......2006-08-16

This is one of my favorite Rasputina albums. The recording quality is top notch and it's not just the band playing the same songs that you hear on the studio albums. They've got some very amusing exchanges with the crowd and intro to most of the songs.

I cannot stress enough that the live editions of these songs are different than the ones on the studio albums. "Hunter's Kiss" and "If Your Kisses Can't Hold", in my opinion, are much better in the live renditions than the studio versions from other albums.

All in all, I am quite pleased with this purchase as it is a very nice complement to the rest of the Rasputina catalog.

4 out of 5 stars Hey! This has been done before!.......2005-12-31

Rasputina is great and unique; being a cellist myself they really mean a lot to me. I am also a music lover and really like 'gothic' stuff(gothic cello music ~perfect~)... but I have been getting into psychedelic/acid folk rock too...Well what does that have to do with anything? I just listened to 'Blind Man' by Curved Air from their album Air Conditioning and I really thought it was Rasputina! The exact same vocal style, strings, and very similar melodies! I can't believe this was done 35 years ago! ... Rasputina kinda had problems in their career trying to find a place to 'fit in' and decided to go with the gothy thing touring with Marilyn Manson. Now their fans are also listening to music like Marilyn Manson, Switchblade Symphony and other Cleopatra Records stuff(based on Amazon.com similar searches)...It just makes me wonder if they toured under a more relevant folk-rock outfit(maybe with Coldplay or Lucinda Williams instead of Manson) would they still have fans that listen to gothic music? Heck No! Would they be more popular? Yes!...So back to what I was gonna say. If you find that Rasputina's music really stands out and you want something more similar in sound do a search for acid/psychedelic folk rock bands of the 60's 70's...stuff like Comus and Curved Air. Similarities will blow you away.

1 out of 5 stars Worst live album I've ever heard.......2005-11-16

Sorry I don't mean to belittle their work but it really is the worst live album by a band I have ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars I love Rasputina!!!!.......2005-10-20

Love the remakes of Barracuda and Been a Long Time. No one believes me when I say that it is a Cello instead of guitars.
Love Wicked Dickie and When I was a Young Girl as well. Buy it. This CD is better, in my opion, than the studio CD's.

5 out of 5 stars An old man who had a cow...........2005-10-18

I love this CD, plain and simple. I had only ever heard a few songs off of 'Thanks for the Ether' and was impressed but not immensely. With this CD, I am impressed...immensely.
First off, it sounds better than any live CD I have ever heard. I usually avoid live recordings like the plague but this one brings me new hope for live stuff.
Second, and most importantly, the music is inspired and practically brilliant (Not Hyperbole). Every song stands on its own and is shockingly eclectic in its own right. From their "Cow Punk" to their "Classical" to songs like "The Mayor" (which is gorgeous, for lack of better word).
If you have heard any of Rasputina's music and even kinda liked it I recommend this CD. If you listen to it and don't find yourself singing "Wicked Dickie" throughout the day, I will give you a nice shiney quarter.
