"Many years from now" must have seemed like an understatement to 16-year-old Paul McCartney, wondering if he'd still be needed or fed at the age of 64. As it turned out, all doubt as to the latter had ceased by his 22nd birthday (though few could have predicted he'd end up washing down those meals with the liquid pride of Seattle). As to the former? Now that McCartney, as of the date of this album's release, has reached that mythic age, his greatest work is 40 years behind him, his solo peak over 30 years gone. Does the world need a new Paul McCartney album? The answer is yes, at least as much as it needs anything else that passes for music these days. With Memory Almost Full, Macca is back. No, it's not Ram or Band on the Run. It might not even be Flowers in the Dirt--in 1989, he had a full band, the support of Linda, and Elvis Costello as a collaborator. Here, he's on his own. Literally: on the majority of the tracks, everything but the strings is multi-instrumentalist Paul. But the surprise is that it's one of his freest, loosest affairs in years, sonically reminiscent of the Tug of War/Pipes of Peace era with nods to Abbey Road in the album-closing medley, McCartney's gravelly tones on "Gratitude," and 2007's version of "Her Majesty," the palate-cleansing "Nod Your Head." It's a surprise because of the album's inescapable sense of retrospection ("Ever Present Past," "Vintage Clothes," "That Was Me") and even a bit of weariness. The next-to-last song is "The End of the End," after all, in which McCartney tells us about what he'd like to happen "on the day that I die." (He wants "songs that were sung/to be hung out like blankets/that lovers have played on/and laid on while listening to songs that were sung," and will likely get his wish.) But it never gets overwhelming, for McCartney mostly resists his tendency to get plodding and maudlin. In fact, Memory Almost Full must be the most sanguine album made during the dissolution of a marriage since...well, ever. "What went out is coming back," he sings in "Vintage Clothes," and from the sound of things, that may not be just wishful thinking. What's past is prologue; if we're lucky, what to come may be McCartney's late renaissance. --Benjamin Lukoff

MUCH better than "Chaos & Creation" and "Drivin' Rain".......2007-07-23

I am a life-long McCartney fan, and I evolved along with Macca, from the early 70s solo/Wings albums (including the underrated yet brilliant "Wings Wild Life" album) through the 80s and 90s and now the 21st century. I never understood the critical acclaim for either of the 2 previous albums "Drivin' Rain" and "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard", which I thought were simply unremarkable, even boring.

"Memory Almost Full" (13 tracks, 42 min.) is, thankfully and FINALLY a return to form for Macca. The opener (and single) "Dance Tonight" is reminiscent of "Hope of Deliverance" (from that other underrated album "Off the Ground"). "Only Momma Knows" rocks harder than anything Macca has done in the last 15 years, and sounds great. "You Tell Me" is a great understated song, reminding me of the 1970 "McCartney" album sound. Much is made of "Gratitude" (an ode to Heather Mills?) but it's one of the weaker tracks here actually. On the second half of the album, there are a number of shorter tracks, such as "Vintage Clothes" and "That Was Me", the latter reminding me of the "Ram" sound, Macca makes his point musically, and moves on, and it sounds great. The next-to-last track "The End of the End" is the exclamation point on the album, Macca looking forward to what will happen when he goes up into the Big Blue Sky, very moving and touching but not sappy, and a perfect cap of the album. The last track "Nod Your Head" sounds out of place after that, but rocks!

In all, I couldn't be more happy with this album. Macca is now 65 but "Memory Almost Full" proves that he is STILL relevant, and unlike "Chaos & Creation" and "Drivin' Rain", this is an album I will actually play again.

More of the Same - Magic and Maturity.......2007-07-23

Someday - probably long after the passing of every currently living generation - the music of The Beatles will be appraised in ways uncolored by our particular cultural associations and expectations. When that happens, "Memory Almost Full" could well be appreciated as just another example of the production that we can evaluate only in the afterglow of the different manifestations of Beatlemania.

Anyway, that's how I see it right now. These songs have all the strengths - and all the weaknesses of any work by that Sixties band. And if you're sad that we'll never hear certain voices harmonize again or experience the creative twists of those special collaborations, you just might hear part of that same sadness in these songs too. It's there in the weariness of "Dance Tonight" and the lyrics and melodies of songs like "You Tell Me".

If you feel angry and cheated by what the years have swept away in their passing, you just might find your bitter, bewildered, resentment echoed in "Only Mama Knows". Of course, those of us who can remember seeing the Fabs live on Ed Sullivan do not tend to associate dark thoughts with their music despite songs like "Helter Skelter", "For No One" or "I'm Down". One reason for that is that sadness and anger were mostly there as counterpoint. And humor was rarely absent.

"Mr. Bellamy" is nothing but a Beatles Song. It's perfectly strange with that odd, Liverpuddlian balminess that's in addition to the craziness of the title character, proud, isolated and driven by his own "delusionary state" to the verge of self-destruction. But it's also beautiful in ways both comforting and eerie.

If future generations find value in the music of the Beatles, it may be because they were so successful in blending and transitioning between emotions and tones in so many surprising and gratifying ways. Their dissolution as a band must have been caused in part by the impossibility of their continuing to meet the ever-rising expectations that each success brought about.

Thirty years after the breakup, the expectations have hardly subsided. No effort by Paul or Ringo can escape their impact. What's especially impressive about "Memory Almost Full" is both how Paul is able to face these expectations so directly and how he surmounts them - almost like a champion surfer riding a fast, tall whitecap until landing agilely on his feet with his board now held high.

There's plenty of fun and whimsy. There are some beautiful pieces of melody. There are some arresting affects such as a chorus in "Feet in the Clouds" that manages to sound both angelic and robotic at the same time. Maybe some bits seem too "light" and maybe some seem to be trying too hard to be "heavy". Still, the album hangs together on its own merits as much (or more) than any Beatles album where virtuosity and versatility were always more emphasized than thematic consistency. These songs are pretty much all about the passing of the years with touches of triumph, generosity, and nostalgia intermingling with feelings of loss, bewilderment and thrashing angst.

There was a time when I somehow felt cheated that time and tragedy had made it impossible for me to ever experience new Beatles music. This is a great creative effort by a complex, driven, and astounding talent that helps me understand (in several ways) how wrong that feeling was.

I not only was "painfully bored" but felt terribly ripped off! Sir Paul was probably in need of some fast cash to pay off Heather is the only thing I can think off that would make him put this one together. Sorry, but I normally love everything he does but this one really fell flat.

It's tough to be a Macca fan for 45 years and wind up with this bland, boring, lifeless creation. His youthful exuberance and wonder are sorely missing (which is understandable but hard to accept) and who can sing any of these songs, which was always his trademark? Marrying Heather and making this record are two monumental mistakes you can't take back...

Fool on the Hill .............2007-07-20

Quite a let down, after all the hype and marketing. I'm a long-standing Macca fan (of his music, at least), but I expected more from this. There are two memorable tracks, Ever Present Past (for catchiness) and Mr Bellamy (for being ever-so-slightly original, and appealing to me as a cat lover!). But as for the rest .... MaccaPap. And Nod your Head is a horrible way to close an album. I greatly recommend Chaos and Creation in the Backyard over this one, that was a mature, thoughtful and musical album. This is McCartney getting away with slick marketing and slack songwriting. If you don't have any of the solo albums, stick with Ram (which was also slack but far more inspired), Band on the Run, and Chaos and Creation perhaps.

Continuum is about as apt a title as it gets for John Mayer's third studio disc. Every element, from the peerless guitar playing to the plainspoken poetry of the lyrics to the breathy-sincere singing, makes a return from previous efforts. But to weakly pronounce this another worthwhile effort from an artist the world has come to expect a whole lot from and then call it a day would be no minor misdeed, because it's also the best, boldest disc he's ever made. Taking maturity as a theme throughout, Mayer tackles a batch of adulthood's bogeymen: indifference on the uptempo chart-climber "Waiting for the World to Change," aging on the melancholy-sweet "Stop This Train," and emotional trainwreckage on the big-rocking "In Repair." That's not to suggest he's turned overly introspective--check the Jimi Hendrix cover "Bold As Love," where he hits one home for guitarists who've been living in the shadow of legend everywhere, and the hard-charging "Belief," which benefits from a mesmerizing, liquid groove. Continuum may be the third in a series, but a creative cop-out this is not; Mayer is his generation's musical superman--powerful, unassailable, and magnetic. Hand that man a cape. --Tammy La Gorce

Smooth!.......2007-07-23

This CD is easy on the ears....I listen to it at work and in the car.

I am not familar with John Mayer's work prior to "Continuum", but this dude got it right with this particular disc. I was drawn in by his breakout song "Waiting on the world to change" impressed with its political conscience. But after listening to the whole disc a number of times, the other outstanding songs unfolded.

The song "Slow dancing in a burning room" was the first song to jump out at me; any person that has been in a tumultuous relationship can definately relate. The lyrics in that song are amazing. After I wore that song out, I noticed "Gravity" and its awesome lyrics. Next, was the old Hendrix song "Bold as Love" Mayer might not be on Hendrix's guitar playing level, but he does a masterful job on this one. The more uptempo "Belief" then caught my ear. A song I believe is ultimate truth. Finally I felt the flavor of "Dreaming with a Broken Heart" A very haunting and compelling song and performance by Mayer.

He will be performing with Eric Clapton tommorow Bryant PK NYC 7.00AM free. They say get there early, but if he is with Clapton you might have to camp out the day before. I don't know the classification of Mayer's music, but I do believe this record brings back "excellent" lyrical content to the mainstream.

I guess I must plead ignorance; I never liked John Mayer and thought he was a lightweight who sang schlocky, whiny stuff, but I must apologize! This is a really melodious, pleasing CD! I must listen more to really appreciate it, but it is so easy and rewarding to listen to. Give it a try. I NEVER thought I'd be saying this! Go John!

I haven't heard a cd of his I didn't like. I just love the way his music makes me feel when I listen to it. I listen to it at the end of the work day and all my stresses seem to melt away.

The Beatles' last days as a band were as productive as any major pop phenomenon that was about to split. After recording the ragged-but-right Let It Be, the group held on for this ambitious effort, an album that was to become their best-selling. Though all four contribute to the first side's writing, John Lennon's hard-rocking, "Come Together" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" make the strongest impression. A series of song fragments edited together in suite form dominates side two; its portentous, touching, official close ("Golden Slumbers"/"Carry That Weight"/"The End") is nicely undercut, in typical Beatles fashion, by Paul McCartney's cheeky "Her Majesty," which follows. --Rickey Wright

This is a very great, very influential album by the beatles, and in my opinion it is one of their best, along with sgt. pepper and the white album of course.

this is the greatest rock album on the planet and of all time as far as i am concerned... It is bursting with mind boggling originality, brilliance in composition, singing, and musicianship. Both sides offer tremendous rock songs, from John's always fresh and brilliant 'Come together', to beautiful ballads like 'Something', to pure childlike pleasure of 'Octopuss's garden' and 'Maxwell's silver hammer'(somewhat silly, but so well-sung and playful!) to the unbelievably effective 'I want you(she's so heavy)' which ushers in the hard rock era with more gravity than any song had ever done before...'Maxwell's silver hammer' is a comedy-horror-pop song really, a new term(self-coined) that describes it better since Maxwells' silver hammer does come down on someone's head in the song!! Side B is full of awesome songs, the eversunny and phenomenal 'Here comes the sun', a Harrison masterpiece essentially, followed by the near-monastic and philosophical vocal jewel 'Because', with magnificent vocal harmonies by John, Paul, and George(just listen to it!!), and the long medley of brilliant short songs, and controlled rock improvisations of great beauty, power and subtlety, all at the same time. 'You never give me your money and the rest of that song with the enigmatically enchanting guitar riffs by John (presumably) till it fades away to 'Sunking' is one of their most original and greatest musical excursions...It ends with the four chorusing: " one two three four five six seven, all the children go to heaven"... truly mindboggling in its power and beauty, and deeply engaging rock... they are all instrumental virtuosos here, make no mistake about it!!! Abbey road shines with a maturity that goes beyond the ordinary test of time... Decades later it can still surpass all new albums that come out and create waves of recognition...What's the weakness of Abbey road? Mccartney's 'Oh! darling' and/or 'Maxwell's silver hammer(though both somehow fitted in so well(!!)) probably if any...'Oh darling' is an enchanting piece nevertheless with very Un-mcartniyish vocal presentation and appears to be an attempt to rise above Lennon's hardrock tour-de-force 'i want you(she's so heavy)'... but it is neatly sandwiched between maxwell's silver hammer, and octopuss's garden before the side a mindstopper 'i want you'. it really fits in with more poppy and agitated vocal type all at the same time in a strange and wondrous fit indeed!! The medley of songs on side b are the best concocted rock lineage that exists...What a fantastic gift to the world before the band dissolved!!!!...

This is my favorite album (well, one of them), so I have wrecked mine by listening to it on the beach.... Number 10 to the end are totally WRECKED. So here I am, buying a new copy. I haven't heard the second half of the album in a loooong time!

Great songwriting and production of Romantic Pop Rock.......2007-07-12

If you are a fan of angry music, this ain't for you (sorry). In the context of the times it had a certain charm and still retains much of the original charm. If you are not a romantic, don't try to understand this album or band. Because the Beatles were, if nothing else, hopeless romantics who used music to find love. On that level Abbey Road works quite well. For the segment of the population that enjoys romantic rock you will find this collection of songs rewarding.

If I could pick only one Beatles CD to play this would be it.......2007-07-08

The Fab Four were at the top of their form and their work was varied and adventurous on "Abbey Road". While murder wasn't a totally unknown topic in rock, "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" with its bright instrumentation blew our minds back in the day.

Odd and sad that "Come Together" opens this CD and it was the last of their big hits together. I've rearranged this one on my iPod so that "Golden Slumbers" and is the last of this offering. Just seemed fitting to me.

Long a Bob Dylan fan, Bryan Ferry remade "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" for his 1973 self-titled album of covers. This time around, the celebrated Roxy Music leader turns in Dylanesque, recasting 11 Dylan classics during a single live-in-the-studio week that leaves the album sounding vibrantly faithful to the original numbers. Far be it for the imaginative contrarian to retrace Dylan's steps, and sure enough--despite an omnipresent harmonica--Ferry does just the opposite. The raw rocker "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" becomes a seductive British pop song, while despair and loneliness turn into effervescence for the driving "Simple Twist of Fate." Ferry's ageless tenor injects a modern momentum into early Dylan imprints "Positively 4th Street" (with strings!), "All I Really Want to Do," and "The Times They Are A-Changing," and gloriously respects the more recent "Make You Feel My Love" (from 1997's Time out of Mind). But the best is yet to come, as the oft-covered "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" may never have received better treatment and "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down" loses not a beat of its original knock-down luster. The record closes with "All Along the Watchtower," a twin tribute to Dylan and Jimi Hendrix, the visionary for this adaptation. --Scott Holter

Take It For What It Is....................2007-07-23

I've been looking forward to this album since I first heard about it a few months ago. Of all current and past vocal artists, I cant think of anyone better suited than Bryan Ferry for this arduous undertaking. How DO you interpret the career work of Bob Dylan? Think about it for a second. You can take a famous Dylan song and make it your own like, for example, Jimi Hendrix and Guns & Roses. These interpretations are outstanding, but bear little resemblance to the original Dylan songs. Or, do you try to stay true to the original recordings and imitate a voice and sound that is so incredibly unique? This approach often results a musical caricature of the original. In fairness, some artists such as the Byrds and Joan Baez have copied Dylan successfully, but only with "older" Dylan songs. Let's give Bryan Ferry his due credit. He covers a wide range of Dylan songs and he does not overplay or underplay his role in these songs. Does he respect the original recording?....absolutely. The music of Bob Dylan, along with the Beatles of course, will be eternal much like Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. Just like there are many interpretations of the work of these creative geniuses over the years, Bryan Ferry is the first (and the best) in this early effort to interpret the great Bob Dylan. It is not the original songs, but it is not supposed to be. But it is, without question, a great contribution to music at a time when musical creativity is sorely lacking. Take it for what it is.....!

This is a cd of hit or miss...but the misses are far better than the fillers that populate many cds. My favorites and the reasons are: If Not For You--Ferry's arrangement puts a little funkiness into the song and I think it is by far the best cut. The Times They Are A-Changing is a thumpign rocker and a fantastic new musical interpretation. To Make You Feel My LOve comes out as an excellent lounge song and reminds me of Tony Bennett's "The Way You Look Tonight." The rest of the cuts are good, just not going on my I-Pod.

The best part of this entire cd is listening to the arrangements. They say much about the quality of Bob Dylan's songwriting and Ferry's ability as a singer and interpreter.

This is a well done cd. Bravo!

Ferry does it..........2007-07-22

Like no other artist who's done covers of Dylan, Brian Ferry has succeeded in making Dylan's music his own. Rather than those who'd imitate, usually miserably, Ferry intreprets. You hear Ferry first, Dylan second.

And what a success. The "Ferry Flow" is in fine form. Not a cold edge nor a ragged surface will you find here. It's all smooth grove.

Buy this. If for no other reason then his cover of "The Times They Area A'Changin'." It's killer.

Coloring with Bob................2007-07-18

We all know that Bob Dylan is one of the world's best songwriters; he has given us breathtakingly, beautiful melodies. Bob doesn't need anyone to improve on his works of Art.....and no one is trying to do that here. Whereas Bob foxtrots inside the lines and colors in dark neutral shadows, Bryan colors outside the box in electric pinks and blues all while doing the jitterbug......

Taking a fabulous song and making your own rendition of it, is greatly inspiring and the dream of any musician. You can tell by this CD that Bryan truly enjoyed himself and was honourably creative and sensitive with the wealth of song before him......Bryan's voice is soothing and chilling just as his rhythm and blues make us stand up and dance. There are a few songs which sound like he was channeling Elvis and a few more, Warren Zevon....Perhaps he did get help from the other side.. it certainly sounds heavenly.....Thanks, Bryan.....you're incredibly delightful......

A Not So Simple Twist on Dylan.......2007-07-17

Bryan Ferry has always been a fairly confounding character. His youthful days with the original Roxy Music seem light years removed from the music he made with the latter-day version of the band. Meanwhile his solo material displayed a similar range of ideas, veering from whacky cover versions to recycled Roxy tunes to original compositions that easily could have fit onto a Roxy Music collection (and often did). Taking all of this into context, "Dylanesque" is no big surprise, and neither is its haphazard approach to Dylan's catalog of tunes.
From the start, "Dylanesque" is a wild ride, handling some songs as precious gems, while tearing through others with an oddball slant that could only have been topped by Dylan himself. "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" is a perfect album opener, not only because Ferry nails it dead on, but also because the lyrical theme addresses how it feels to be lost and alone with "sweet Melinda", and how hard it is to find your way back home. When the going gets tough, the tough get weird (thanks for the paraphrase, Dr. Thompson...), and Ferry proceeds to do just that. He bends "Simple Twist of Fate" into a melancholy rocker, and sings "All I Really Want to Do" as if he were channeling the Turtles. For the way Ferry handles it, "The Times They Are a-Changing" might be a sardonic commentary on how nothing ever really changes. "Baby Let Me Follow You Down" is another strange choice, mostly because Dylan didn't write it, but also because Ferry's interpretation sounds dated on arrival.
"Make You Feel My Love" does nothing that Dylan's version didn't already do (or Billy Joel's, for that matter), nor does "Knocking on Heaven's Door." His versions are both straightforward and predictable. He also drains all of the anger out of "Positively 4th Street," making it feel more like the sad lament of a hurt lover than the vicious diatribe of a friend betrayed. "Gates of Eden" may be the second best interpretation here, full of spooky atmospherics that suggest just the right amount of otherworldly presence, only to lapse into the world's 500th version of "All Along the Watchtower." The world may not need this, but Ferry's album is just weird enough to survive beyond what is essential. You don't need to hear it, but nevertheless, "Dylanesque" will probably make you wonder why you want to hear it all over again. B+ Tom Ryan

This was the album where the Beatles grew up and moved into a more mature and less organised sound. That road had begun with "A Day In a Life" and "Within You Without You" and "Good Morning" in Sgt Peppers - but the Beatles were still a smart pop rock band then.

In the White Album, there is a wonderful sense of a loss of control - and yet this is still the Beatles at their creative peak. Not caring what people think, they're just playing to the maximum of their abilities. And shattering barriers.

The power of their varied personalities comes through. And different sides of their personality. Who cares about anything except the music I'm feeling now? seems to be the prevalent thought here. The White Album is the Beatles Matured - who would have imagined that the Beatles would create "Helter Skelter"? or "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"...Epic stuff that certified that the Beatles could rock. "Dear Prudence" and "Sexy Sadie" and "Blackbird" are eminently listenable. In fact - apart from some ditties and departures - the album is strikingly distinctive as a playground of sounds - it is dynamic from one end to the other and still eminently listenable and deep.

How do you define genius? This is one hard album to ignore.

Some of the Beatles Best Work.......2007-06-27

Wow...this brings back great memories. The songs are so diverse and unusual, showing their true talent and creative song writing abilities. The songs are fun and strange all at the same time. It is one of my favorites of the Beatles. When you can have "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Rocky Raccoon" and "Blackbird" in one package....what more can you ask!

It's Four Solo Albums & Still Great.......2007-06-23

This was on sale way Back in November 1968, for $5.00. That was the best five Bucks I ever spent. By 1968 after Eight years Together, The Beatles had just about seen it all, and they were very close to imploding. But, Lucky for all of us John, Paul, George & Ringo were on top of their Game and with the "White Album" they Presented their Best Songwriting and their greatest Playing over the Span of the 30 Tracks Here.
From: "Back in the USSR" all the way thro' to "Goodnight" and my favorite Track in reverse: "Revolution #9" you get a Beatle Album So Different & so Bold in it's Scope and Range from anything else they Gave us. We were Very Lucky to Have this band on the Planet from: 1964-70. It will never happen again in our Lifetime, But here it is, in all it's Glory...

Literate, poetic...great pop/rock 4.5 out of 5.......2007-07-13

I'm not giving this cd 5 out of 5 because of some issues about the sound...the first cd seems to lack presence in the sound and there is some distortion in the first track of disc 2 [I listen to cds on good quality headphones and I feel that these sound issues could be eliminated if people did the same prior to releasing cds].

Anyway, The Police are perhaps THE major British band of the 1980s. Looking at the credits in the double cd, it seems that lead singer "Sting" pretty much did everything himself...from writing the songs to arranging the music.

Many of the songs on this compilation show Sting to be the former English teacher that he was...from his superior way with words, to his literary allusions.

The highlights of the first cd for me are:

Can't stand losing you-a song about breaking up. The 'voice' of the song sounds like a pouty teenager and is amusing for its melodrama. Suicide is mentioned in this song. This topic seems fertile for rock. E.g. Metallica have the beautiful and absolute classic song "Fade to black", with its adult sensibility; and Megadeth have "A tout le monde", which, like this Police song, seems to have a teenage 'voice' singing. Both latter songs have melodrama, but The Police give their song a nice dose of humour.

Roxanne-perhaps the song which broke the band, especially in the UK. It's about the boyfriend of a prostitute, I think. Along with the song above, it is one of the strongest songs on the first cd. It has a nice mixture of a vulnerable 'voice' doing the singing, and the pounding, repetitive lyrics of the chorus.

Two other songs from the first cd which take my fancy are "Message in a bottle" and "Walking on the moon". Both songs are more towards the "ballad" end of the pop/rock spectrum. The latter song, particulary, illustrates Sting's great lyrical imagery...i.e. he likens walking, when one is in love, to walking on the moon...brilliant use of lyrics and imagery.

The second cd contains most of the songs that I particularly like from this band. "De do do do, de da da da" is a terrific song about how the powerful use language for their own benefit. Many years ago I wasn't very keen on this song, as it SOUNDED like non-sense [and going on the title too]. Listening to this song years later, you appreciate the depth of meaning it has behind it. Nice turn of phrase "Poets, priests and politicians, have words to thank for their positions". Sting doesn't seem to include pop/rock stars!

"Invisible sun" has a terrificly eerie opening [not unlike Synchronicity II...in fact, the intros could just as easily be used to introduce darker themes and music, but settles for terrific pop/rock]. I'm not so keen on the chorus of Invisible Sun, but I really like the verses and the ambiance of the introduction.

"Spirits in the material world" is another highlight from the second disc.
It exemplifies an attractive trait of this band...mixing up the hooks in one song. The song is catchy from the start, with nice melodies [vocal], but it really picks up when a NEW melody [keyboard] is introduced in the latter part of the song. This song may be the one where Sting's glib political views are at the fore ["Our so called leaders speak. With words they try to gaol you. They subjugate the meek, but it's the rhetoric of failure"]. That's a VERY nice turn of phrase, but, like I say, rather glib and lacking in hope for the political process.

Perhaps the band's biggest hit is "Every breath you take". This song isn't one that has ever really grabbed me. To me it's like the curate's egg...good in parts. An Australian equivalent would be Mondo Rock's "Come said the boy"-both bands had monumentally great pop/rock songs, but their most successful songs were not the ones I rated as great. Anyway, The Police's ballad is perhaps growing more on me now...it's 'good' bits are making the song gel better now, for me, perhaps.

"Wrapped around your finger" is another very good Police song, and which has those literary allusions I spoke of earlier "Caught between the Scylla and Charibdes". Perhaps my favourite Police song of all is "King of pain", which also has some literary allusions that I know of "There's a king with his eyes torn out" and some that elude me "There's a skeleton choking on a crust of bread". Both these songs illustrate the great thing about Police songs...how they change gears, so to speak, by changing tempo or pitch or melody. The bit in King Of Pain where this happens is where Sting raises his voice higher and starts the line about the King. Reading the lyrics, I saw that it was more gruesome than I remember, but nonetheless beautiful to listen to.

"Synchronicity" is one of the band's more adventurous sounding rock songs but they carry it off with aplomb.

I do remember hearing somewhere about the song "Murder by numbers" causing controversy in the US and the band's response to this. Having read the lyrics that come with this cd, I see that the band is right to defend the song, but perhaps they only have themselves to blame by making the point of their song towards the end, making it difficult to come by, perhaps. It is also another politically glib song by Sting, though perhaps containing a germ of truth.

Lastly, I did find "Walking in your footsteps" to be a lyrically interesting song. Perhaps it is Sting likening humans to dinosaurs...with us heading for extinction too, like the dinosaurs, if we keep toying with nuclear power.

In conclusion, this is a terrific buy for people into lyrically sophisticated music with catchy pop/rock that is also sophisticated. I do find the drumming sound by this band to be satisfying and their melodies gorgeous when they're at their best. It's just a pity though that on occasion it sounds like the master tapes are in fact LP records...with dust or scratches on them.

Best rhythm section in rock........2007-07-08

I wouldn't give you more than 50 cents for Sting, but listening to Copeland and Summers on this compilation confirms that they are/were the best rhythm section in rock - or, at the very least, one of the best. Focusing on their playing throughout these 28 tracks is a real delight. I don't know of many other bass/drum duos who can make so much happen so economically.

Buy and get a master class in how to make a rock rhythm section work to perfection.

Excellent compilation that could have been perfect with some additional songs...4 1/2 stars.......2007-07-06

A perfect excuse to exploit their catalog again, A&M/Universal (or whatever the congolmerate is called now)has put together a terrific compilation of the band's album tracks and hits. It appears that the masters used for the album reissues from a couple of years ago are the source here as they sound excellent and exactly the same as the previous set. This is a huge improvement over the various single disc sets released since 1986.

"Fall Out" was their first single and has only appeared on their four disc anthology on CD before this. We get 6 songs from the band's first album "Outlandos d' Amour" 4 tracks from their second album "Regatta De Blanc" their second album, 5 tracks from "Zenyatta Mondatta" their third album, 4 tracks from their fourth album "Ghost in the Machine" and a whopping 8 tracks (most of the album!)from "Synchroncity". We don't get anything from their soundtrack album "Brimstone and Treacle" (which includes the terrific song "I Burn For You") nor anything from their live album. Also missing are b-sides to most of their singles some of which are outstanding.

With 14 songs on each disc there was some room for additional tracks some of which might not have been big hits but deserved a larger audience. "I Burn For You","Bombs Away", "Darkness", "Nothing Achieving" and "Visions of the Night", "Low Life", "The Bed's Too Big Without You" (which they are playing on the tour) are among the songs that probably should have been included.

As mentioned the sound is very good on these discs although there isn't a mastering credit. It does sound very similar to the individual re-releases from a couple years back and has slightly better detail than the boxed set released 14 years ago. The later recordings benefit the most from the remaster although all the songs sound fine. It would have been nice to have comments for each song and more in the way of liner notes on the recordings but that doesn't detract from this anthology. I suspect that there are rarities out there (such as demos, etc.) that could have been added to entice fans who have their other releases but none are here.

This is a very good set for fans looking for the bulk of the best album tracks and hits. The packaging includes a one sheet with some credits on it that folds out into a replica of an early concert poster for the band. The slip case is kind of cool as well. When you slide the holder out of the slipcase the band's songs are listed on the yellow cover (and you can see them when you hold it up to the light).

Another Greatest Greatest Hits...........2007-07-03

The Police were and still are my all-time favorite band. But the last thing I need is another hits collection. I think we're up to four greatest hits packages with this band. C'mon guys! Break out the rarities and unreleased stuff. I know there's a ton. Perhaps this collection was put together to help booster this summer's reunion tour - like they needed any help with that. I still give it 5 stars - these songs are some of the best ever recorded in my opinion. Andy, Stewart and Sting will always rock!

Must have Police Set.......2007-07-01

back in the day I was a Big time Fan of the Police. I always dug there Jams and Grooves. "Every little thing she does is magic", Canary in a Coalmine" was my jam back in the day. Spirits in the Material world, Every Breath you take,Roxanne,etc.... are all here. the Grooves and Versatility Highlighted by the songwriting of Sting and the chemistry of the Musicianship truly made for some tight Jams. the Police in some ways were the link between the Clash,U2 ,Red Hot chilli Pepers and No Doubt on some levels. they Bridged quite a few themes and styles that worked. this is the best overall set that best Highlights there Greatest Hits.

Good music, poorly engineered recording.......2007-07-18

I must admit that I'm somewhat surprised by the number of negative reviews I've seen for this album. I thought Paul came up with some good melodies here. The musicianship is first-rate. Paul's voice is in pretty good shape. Sure, there are times when the lyrics could've been better, but that's typical McCartney. Folks, if you didn't like this album at first, try listening to it a bit more. I think it's a heck of a lot better than most of the pop/rock being produced today. And let's not even talk about rap and hip-hop (yuck). This CD set contains songs that are fun to sing, complete with melodic twists and variations in tempo. You wouldn't think those would be such rare qualities in today's music, but they are.

I agree with the reviewer who was critical of the recording. One of the worst examples is "Only Mama Knows". Most of the song is pushed to the absolute limit of CD volume. There's no actual clipping indicated when the track is viewed on a good audio editing program, but it sounds like there was clipping at some stage of the recording/mixing process. The effect of this is distortion and almost no dynamic range. I suspect a remastered version of this album will be issued years from now, and the volume problem will be fixed. And, yes, I'll probably be foolish enough to buy it.

To say that I am disappointed in this compilation of McCartney music is an uderstatement. What was Sir Paul smoking when he conceived this idea? He has written these stupid essays and sung them into songs. And the essays are terrible and mindless.

Sir Paul, you are 64 and I will still send you a valentine, if you stop writing trashy music. And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make. This one is sad.

It is time to retire and rest on your laurels.

A return to their former glory days, Snakes and Arrows shows this seminal prog rock band reclaiming some of the sonic territory that they'd lost over the past few years. It's not certain what contributed to this artistic rebirth, but Rush has crafted a historical and emotional odyssey that shows many both where they've been and where they're going--from the baroque soundscapes of "The Main Monkey Business," reminiscent of their earliest work to the seductive almost folkloric urgency of "The Way the Wind Blows," which is as dangerous, anxious, and prophetic as anything that Arcade Fire or Mars Volta is doing currently. Give S&A 5 spins before casting judgment...........2007-07-23

Snakes & Arrows is the first Rush studo album/CD I have thoroughly dissected since Counterparts in '93, so I can't compare it to more recent releases like Vapor Trails and Test for Echo. That said, I'm finding Snakes & Arrows to be a very solid, introspective body of work. I will say it took five spins through before 'getting it'...but that's typical of any album/CD from an artist like Rush where you expect at least 7-8 great tracks off each one.
The first album I ever listened to was Power Windows in '85, and frankly, it took about five spins through before I liked every track. Rush will never be able to match their catalog pre-Signals because that's just not possible. 'Feedback' from '04 was as close to the early days as you're going to hear in terms of raw guitar rock.
My favorite albums are the standard classics that 99% of Rush fans love - 2112, Hemispheres, Moving Pix, PermWaves, etc. S&A is probably somewhere in the middle in terms of all-time impact, but like I said, it was a worthy purchase. Also, part of my decision to 'geek out' or 'invest' a bunch of time into this album is due to the fact that Rush is playing 9 songs off S&A on their current tour, and I want to 'know' the music when they roll through Salt Lake on August 6th. Without question a concert is better if you know the music!

Disappointed With Overall Sound!.......2007-07-23

I waited in high anticipation for the release of the MVI version of this album hoping the sound would be awesome in 5.1 surround. When I popped it into my DVD player I was disappointed to say the least. The overall sound is pretty good but there is literally no separation between the front, back, and center channels. Everything is mixed to come out of all speakers at the same time. Being a drummer myself I was really hoping to hear Neil's drums panning across the room and bouncing back and forth between speakers but there was none of that. As a matter of fact his playing on this album is probably the most lack luster/straight forward playing he's ever done on any Rush album to date. I love Neil and he will always be "The Professor" to me but I have to say I wasn't that impressed with his work on this album. It's almost as if he held back on his playing. There are no impressive fills or tricks on this album at all. Just routine fills that we've heard him do countless times before. I have the Queen Greatest Hits DVD and the sound and separation on that DVD far surpasses the sound on this MVI. The sad thing about that is the sound on the Queen DVD was mixed years ago. With that said, it shows there wasn't a lot of thought that went into the mix of this album. If you're a Rush fan than by all means this is a must have MVI/DVD. However, you're probably going to be very disappointed with the sound and lack of 5.1 separation. The one nice thing I have to say about the MVI version is that they included a very nice and informative documentary on the making of the album "Snakes & Arrows". It shows the band in the studio as you've never really seen them before. This was a nice addition and overall makes getting the MVI version a better choice over the regular CD version of the album

Concise review.......2007-07-22

My Rush fanatic friends and I we're going to wait until the Snakes & Arrows concert before forming an opinion. The music didn't seem familiar - as a Rush album should sound like - on the first listenings and some of us we're a little puzzled.

Geddy said in an interview, "We wanted to do a couple of different things musically and present a fresher, more original approach. We wrote a lot of acoustic and bass and tried to make sure we were not seduced by techno. The aim was to produce intelligent melodies and songs that were strong and meaningful, and I think we did."

I agree. Fresher and original.

After a couple of months (and about 10 listenings) and a rocking concert, the music from this album just rocks. Very powerful. On the way home from the venue and the next week, the first 7 songs of this album didn't leave me. From the concert, the old familiar tunes were completely out done by the songs from this album. I believe they played 8 of them. They've definetly departed on something new, it just takes sometime to appreciate.

Navigating Van Morrison's extensive catalog since 1993 is a formidable task even diehard fans might not want to attempt. The Irish icon has flirted with blues, jazz, country, pop, Celtic, and his own style of indescribable into-the-mystic spiritually-oriented poetic folk on his numerous releases, making for quite a thorny culling assignment. I was excited to hear that Van had out a new album. I've been a huge fan since the 70's.(that's dating myself, isn't it). This album is a nice mix of music and includes some duets with other artists. I'd like to see some brand new music from Van, but this one is great.

This is a 2 disc CD with lots of great songs. I really like the mix of songs and definitely recommend this to Van Morrison fans.

I won't call this definitive, but the collection's got some previously unreleased and seldom heard numbers that merit the price and hype. This is a very listenable CD that's something you can just stick in the changer and let it play. Definitely worth the money.

Continuing writers block.......2007-07-10

Despite having most of this already I paid out my money and what did I get? A reasonable overview with some obscurities, one of which "Blue and Green" is worth the cost on its own. While the music is all first class the compiling has created some jarring between tracks. I've always loved The Skiffle Sessions album but Lost John between Leaves Come Falling Down and Tupelo Honey sounds bizarre. Nearly all the tracks he has re-recorded are done better in their original incarnation and one gets the feeling that with this, the movie "best of" and the country abomination Pay The Devil before them that he has nothing to say at present. I love Morrison's music and sincerely hope there is more of it to come, its now been a fair number of years since there has been an album of original material and he is overdue for his muse to return.

The Legend Continues..........2007-07-04

This 'Best Of' is a must for any Vanatic (Van fan)... but more importantly it is a must for anyone who thinks Van's career ended in the 1970s... all the tracks on "Vol. 3" are from 1993-2005 - Van's later writing and singing are well represented on this compilation and with a superb supporting cast of John Lee Hooker, Ray Charles, Tom Jones, Carl Perkins, Lonnie Donegan, Bobby "Blue" Bland and the great Georgie Fame as they come along for the journey...

Van is still a mighty force in a world that needs more soul and less pop.

Bob Seger has racked up a lot of worthy tracks over the years, but it took until 1994 for a greatest hits package to appear. Voilà. The bad news: We're missing an awful lot of songs here. Night Moves is Seger's crit-pick album, and a great place to start if you don't have any Seger at all. Next in the rankings is Stranger in Town. Otherwise, his highs are pretty scattered, which would make any best-of package a worthy investment. But if you want to get comprehensive, "Rock & Roll Never Forgets," "Fire Down Below," "Horizontal Bop," "Her Strut," "Betty Lou's Getting Out Tonight," and "Katmandu" aren't on this CD--and you'll have to go to the original albums to secure them. --Gavin McNett
