Amazon.com's Best of 2001

A massive set--67 string quartets on 21 discs in a budget-priced, shelf-friendly, compact box. So the obvious question is: do you need it? The equally obvious answer is a resounding "yes" if you love these endlessly inventive quartets and if you appreciate superbly played performances that capture both the letter and the spirit of Haydn's genius. The Angeles String Quartet isn't as well known as some ensembles that have recorded complete Haydn sets, but they are superior to all, with the arguable exception of the Tatrai Quartet. They demonstrate technical polish and rich, warm sound that's never cloying. And they give these works the forward-moving impetus they need within a classical framework, eschewing both anachronistic Romanticism and the mechanical astringency of period specialists.

The Angeles Quartet is unique in its mastery of early as well as late works, in tune with Haydn's stylistic development and sensitive to the attractions of each of these remarkable pieces. So they infuse the visionary slow movements of the late quartets with the appropriate depth and at the same time revel in the muscularity of the Opus 76 No.2's catchy Menuetto, the humor of the "Joke" Quartet, Opus 33 No.2, and the power of the Allegro con spirito of Opus 76 No.1. Most impressive is their way with the early quartets--no small matter when you consider that the contents of the first six discs precede the Opus 20 set generally considered as signaling the maturity of the form. The Angeles make even the earliest quartets, five-movement divertimentos for four strings, a habit-forming delight. Their playing here is full of exuberance, wittily playful and rough, peasantlike by turns. The sonics are outstanding, too, well-balanced, warm, and lifelike. An indispensable recording. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars A superb Haydn benchmark.......2007-06-28

It takes a lot of time to grasp Haydn's music, because there's much of everything: symphonies, piano sonatas, operas, piano trios, string quartets, choral works, songs, etc. - in sum, more than one thousand individual works. It will probably take more than a year listening to it all, and comprehend it as well (i.e., not as "background music"). Few, if any person, can have a complete grasp of everything he wrote.

But there are nonetheless good reasons trying to grasp Haydn's music, at least partly. This bargain set - 68 string quartets on 21 CDs - is a perfectly good reason. Haydn's string quartets contain some of his finest music. And the present recordings with Angeles Quartet are simply superb. Unlike many period instrument performers, Angeles Quartet avoids meticulous mannerism and plays this music with energy and passion, without loosing structural control. Furthermore, the recordings are excellent, with a rich, creamy and spacious sound. In short, great performances and excellent engineering. A benchmark recording, no less.

There are some rival complete sets: Aeolian Quartet (Decca), Festetics Quartet (period instrument performances, Arcana), Tátrai (Hungaroton), and Kodaly Quartet (Naxos). In terms of sound, the present set is clearly preferable. In terms of performances, the only serious rival is Tátrai Quartet's classic collection from the sixties. But Angeles Quartet is not a second choice. If you hesitate, you need both. Budget and shelf space minded collectors need not hesitate.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Dinner Music.......2007-05-14

Some might be offended at the idea that music be played in the background to accompany a fine meal, but in fact most of us listen to music in the background. This entire set of 15-CDs is (to my ears) the perfect music to accompany a delicious meal with someone you love. I have owned this CD set for years and never tire of it.

I have found that after listening to it hundreds of times that using iTunes in shuffle mode keeps it fresh.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Background Music.......2006-03-04

This music is a great buy, and wonderful to listen to while doing desk work or reading.

The Angeles String Quartet does an excellent job, and all of the works are so tuneful that I frequently found myself walking around the house humming the tunes after hearing a quartet for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars He truly is the father of string quartets!.......2005-09-27

This may not be true as far as the instrumentation is concerned, but Haydn is one of the first to explore them as more than a solo violin with a trio accompaniment (second violin, viola and cello), thus giving the chamber music a new dimension.

If you've already explored Haydn's universe through some of his glorious symphonies, these string quartets are an excellent way of further expanding your appreciation of Haydn's music. There are very few dull moments in this lot (and almost all of them are to be found in his early quartets, while there are a few in his very latest works, where he seems to have lost the energy and brio that had established him as one of the best composers of his time). His first works have five movements and ressemble the divertimenti or serenatas. Later on, his quartets took a form which was to become standard, both for Haydn and other composers: four movements - a fast one, a slow one, a minuet and trio and a fast finale.

If one listens to Haydn's string quartes in chronological order, one can feel and appreciate his growth and maturity as a composer. The motives introduced during the first movement are developed over the entire work entity, the increasing use of first movements that are monothematic, the expansion of harmonic usage, the combination of serious with funny, intellectual with ridicule, etc.

Both Mozart and Beethoven wrote famous series of string quartets, but I've always liked Haydn's quartets the most. My personal favorites are op. 76 (especially no 3, which later on became the German National Anthem), op. 64 (especially no 5 called "The lark") and op. 33 (where Haydn introduced special effects, like a birdcall, which gave the third quartet its name).

3 out of 5 stars A matter of taste?.......2005-05-31

It is something unpleasant about the sound here; it is resonant, yes, but not like the Takacs quartet. Comparing to the Takacs' take on op.76/1, 2 & 3, which I love, the Angeles' makes me think of a grey substance, sterile, antiseptic, of no life. Is it the sound quality? Or is it the way the quartet is playing? I think the latter, but it is difficult to figure out what is wrong; in fact I don't find any serious miscalculations. The problem is that the playing feels calculated; it is some kind of contrived perfection, it all feels too concious; I feel something wrong about the accent, the stress of the phrasings... but I give up: Suffice it to say that I regret I bought this collection of boring performances. Three stars for professional playing. If you like some human touch, go for the Aeolian quartet, less perfection, more life.

5 out of 5 stars Gem from the late "Golden Age of Punk".......2005-12-17

Simply masterful. Everyone who dissects music apppreciates the nuances of music - we critique everything we hear. When an apex has been reached (Beethoven's Ninth), we know it immediately. But as much as we appreciate the cognitive details in the final cut, it is the emotional force that sets the blood aflow. Side 2 of this baby (Mary, Joyful Reunion, etc.) is PERFECTION - pure, raw yet disturbingly refined, malevolent and fast, the insanity of the unknown coupled with grit your teeth, shove the safety pin through your cheek, down a shot of whatever happens to be available, punch a hole in the wall and get ready to take the "beater" out for some "alley-can bashin".......If you're not bleedin' by the end of side two, you don't know no @#$%!

5 out of 5 stars Oh yeah, found it!.......2000-05-28

This is the album which put me in touch with NOMEANSNO, and since its first playing I was hooked. So here I am, back to replace the cassette that I wore thin over the many years. Keep in mind that NOMEANSNO is produced by Alternative Tentacles, a record company started by Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedy's. You can't go wrong with a company like that behind you music. Enjoy. I sure as hell will.

5 out of 5 stars No Means No's finest hour?.......2000-01-04

Nomeansno are the most criminally under-rated band in the history of rock. Buy this and find out how good they are. 0 + 2 = 1 is a more-than-usually accessible mixture of the catchy (Now), the amusing (Every Day I Start To Ooze) and the disturbed (Ghosts). Highly recommended. And then go and buy Wrong...

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......1999-12-06

NoMeansNo is simply the best band in Rock and Roll. With the possible exception of Led Zepplin, nobody has ever rocked like this.

0+2=1 opens up with the sublimely catchy and country 'Now'. Possibly NMN's most accessable tune. (Which is actually all about sex.) Then they switch to the rhythmic attack of 'This is Love'. A song that nearly summarizes the potential of this band.

Essentially, if you an ear for great Rock, this album will not let you down. Be sure to check 'Mary' and 'Valley of the Blind'. Blistering lyrics for the angst ridden 40 year old teenager inside each of us. Overall, maybe the best of there 20 year career.

5 out of 5 stars poetry and hardcore from Canada.......1999-07-25

Nomeansno started out as a sort of drum-and-bass band from Victoria, BC. They are simply superb, great lyrics and a growling bass, exquisite percussions. I'm a Nomeansno fan for years and saw them live in Belgium, thrilling! This cd is a gem, but, so is all their stuff.

3 out of 5 stars Not exactly chillout music.......2001-01-06

I bought this cd under the impression that it would be "beautiful chill out music (mostly because it says that on the cover). "Porcelain" can be desribed that way so I thought the rest would be like that. Well, I didn't know that "beautiful" and "chill-out" meant techno dance haush-baush. The only redeeming songs are by "Chicane". 3 minutes of rain and mumbling? Give me a break! I would have bought a nature cd if that's what I wanted. I guess if you can tune out the constant thump-thump beat and listen to the background keyboard "atmospheres" it's not so bad. I guess I'll stick with "Enigma" or "Moodswings" for beautiful, chillout, ORIGINAL, music. Oh yeah, can anyone make a cool, real chill-out cd with out singing on it?

3 out of 5 stars the cd works better as a drink coaster.......2000-12-14

Maybe I don't know what I am talking about, but I can't stand this CD. Compilations in general always sketch me out, so I guess it is my own fault that I bought this. I made the purchase after reading other reviews, and actually believed that this was as epic as everyone seemed to describe. Unfortunately I was entirely disapointed, and after giving it a few chances, I can't get into it. It just isn't a great mix of songs. Plain and simple. Chicane is the one redeeming factor, and obviously Moby's addition is a classic, but who doesn't already own Porcelin by now? I challenge the music tastes of the reviewers who liked this cd, and of course mine is by no means golden, but come on. It just goes to show- to each his own- I suppose. This CD- is going to look great underneath my glass of water.

I bought this cd for the song "Porcelain" and was expecting the rest of the cd to be average. I was pleasantly surprised. The whole cd is exceptional! If you have any doubts at all, put them aside. You will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Great cd.......2000-06-26

This is definatly one of the best cd's i've heard which contain chilled music. The beats & sounds so beautiful & tranquil but with a couple rough edges, which just enlighten the sounds. My advice.. get this cd

Amazing tracks laid down, I reccomend this cd to anyone who's looking for some amazing Progressive.

5 out of 5 stars very "original" indeed.......2005-03-02

Wow, Desyn knows what's up. I always find it refreshing when i listen to it even though I've had if for a while now. Tracks 1-3 are pretty good, but the only reason bought the cd is for the tracks that follow. Track 4's dreamy-a**, mellodic a** sound is awesome. Track 5 picks up with a more hectic, but still melodic, sound. Then desyn gets down with a sweet baseline track 6--sounds awesome with a loud a** sound system. The cd then gets kinda' lame with tracks 7-9 and pics up with a more up-beat sound (as opposed to a more melodic sound from the previous tracks)with tracks 10-11. Get this cd if ur a big prog house fan. Even if ur not, (i listen to a lot of pvd, oakenfold, and sasha) get it anyways.

4 out of 5 stars someone to watch in 05.......2005-01-06

I finally got to see this guy New years eve downtown LA, opening up for Digweed. Heard his In house we trust mix cd's and his essential mix on bbc. This new release is far the best of his mix cd's he has released, but does not even close compare to what he did new years eve downtown la. This guy was phenomenal and im sure he will be back in town to play live. He dropped "lick my deck" by sebastian ingrosso and john dahlback and i couldnt believe what i saw. Crowd went insane. Pay some money and go see this guy if he comes close to you

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2004-12-12

Desyn has the ability to weave complex rythems, melodies, and harmonies, which can take you out of the mundane into a world filled with lush and vibrant color. Just picked this one up the other day and haven't put it down since. The CD starts off strong and ends strong---not a bad song on here. It gets better with each listen, and thats saying a lot seeing as how I like the sound almost immediately. Desyn is definitely one to watch, and his debut on Bedrock is nothing less than phenomenal

4 out of 5 stars Complex. Intelligent. Funk........2004-12-01

Desyn's debut on Bedrock was something I wasn't looking for. His sound caught me off guard. It has a unique vibe, hinting of funk. But not overtly so. He has layered tracks, that show his coming reign of electronic dance. The CD is quite close to what one would expect his live club sound to be. Affrodisiac is the culmination of the entire album, which ranks right up there with the tracks of the year. This is not a vocal album, thankfully; it reveals the skill of the artist, and the painstaking art of mixing. Desyn Masiello is an upandcomer- and he surpasses even that label on this album. Well done. (Sidenote) His debut on Radio1's Essential Mix was nothing short of spectacular- find a copy.

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest Prog mixes around.......2003-04-04

D:Fuse never lets me down. The quality of the mixes he puts out is always superb, and this one is no exception. This mix is well paced, and does not have a single track that seems like it was squeezed in there. The whole CD flows very well to the climax at Track 10, Circadian Rhythms, which is an amazing track. Mixing is excellent. What can I say, buy this!

If you like D:Fuse's work, you should also check out his CD ... check out the Illusion Mix, which is also excellent.

5 out of 5 stars It's all in the pacing..........2001-12-25

Yeah, this CD has some great tunes, but its genius is revealed in its entirety. The tantalizing and utterly compelling build to track #6 is so divinely calculated and so completely effective, that the heavy percussive qualities of "Dutch Drum Attack" will blow your mind regardless of the system on which it is being played. Then, the mood relaxes a bit with some melody, and pumps it up again with "Bodyshock" (which, admittedly, REALLY shines with a quality subwoofer). Track #10 ("Cicadian Rhythms") is one of the most amazing, mind-expanding, progressive tunes I have ever heard, and will take your consciousness on an unforgettable, superfast, action-packed journey. And just when you think it can't get any more tasteful, D:Fuse eases you out of your "frabjous" state with a poignant, soothing, downward-spiraling trance melody.

Some people have issues with such melodic trance at the end of a hard-hitting progressive masterpiece. Well, it isn't THAT melodic, and if you listen to the CD as one complete composition, you will be thankful -- as I am -- for D:Fuse's rare gift of pulling just the right piece of vinyl out of his box.

5 out of 5 stars Let's Get The Party Started.......2001-12-08

PROGRESSIVE MIX SESSION 1.O by D:FUSE is a totally awesome cd. His mixing is clean and the song selection that he chooses will get you up and dancing in no time at all. The bass is bumping and the music jumping and we can see that D:FUSE is a very talented DJ who has a very promising career ahead of him. The music is perfect when just driving in your car or getting hyped for a night of some serious clubbing ahead. I recommend this cd for anyone interested in house/trance.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!! A++.......2001-12-01

For those of you who are sick of cheesy trance then this is for you. This cd is awesome. I have about 100 house/trance cd's and this would definitely be in my top ten. I listen to everything from break beat to trance to house. This is more progressive house and less trancy. These are songs you would hear at a club.
If you are looking for something to dance to and listen to in the car then get this. You will not be disappointed. Those of you who like Nick Warren GU Budapest should get this. D:Fuse is not a household name but he is definitely talented. I have seen him live and he knows how to throw some wicked beats. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best of 2001. so far............2001-04-19

d fuse is back with his third cd and it his best by far. driving bass lines of deep dark dirty progressive house/trance, nothing beats it. the only bad part about the cd is the intro which in my opinion isn t nessasary. after the into the fun begins. d fuse wastes no time to kick it into gear and the mix is off and running. its hard 2 find quality cds like this. I saw d fuse live with oakey and he put on a awsome set similar to this cd. This one and digweeds new G.U are the best of 2001 but Max Graham is coming out with tranceport 4 soon(I know it will be good) but this is a must buy for the true progressive Quality not cheese fan.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Awesome JAZZ.......2004-05-21

While driving through the streets of Chicago in my convertible, I decided to pop this CD into the in-dash multi-disc changer. The day was warm and humid and the skies where overcast. The grooves that began to come out and into the open air quickly helped the cloudy Sky change to Sunny. DOCTOR JAZZ is what is making people on the streets around me, turn and bob their heads. This album is very different music from the other cars that are pulling up next to me, but none the less a groove that made a lot of people smile as I pulled away. Was it the AWESOME looking guy behind the wheel of the 2004 RED MUSTANG drop top? Was it the CAR? No, I think it was Track 5, "First Man Then Machine." I had that one on repeat. I wanted everyone to feel the groove that I was feeling. Cool, was the guy driving, Funky. was the groove that everyone was feeling as I drove 5 mph in a 40 mph zone. This is brought to you from Italy's latest export. BLADE, MARCUS, DELAVIE, LOULOU are the DOCTOR's of the groove, and here is another reason why I feel you need to fix up your summer collection of Great Jazz. The spectrum of Jazz is accomplished here and is the REMEDY is Universal. Enjoy the classic jazz sounds as "Milt Shake" takes us back to basics when jazz was born. "Groovy Night" is what you will be feeling and you spend time with your energetic partner as housey rhythms lift the soul and gets you dancing. "Elizabeat" is a make up of musical sound streams that has the funkiness of HERBIE HANCOCK and a Piano Chant that of RAMSEY LEWIS. Track four will give you "Seven Reasons Why" you need to make sure you have this in your collection. You'll absolutely love LOULOU's vocals on this track and it's "Because Of You" is another hot up-tempo dance tune that can be use by funky house and soulful DJ's. A nice very sexy slow groove is the "Interlude." More and more we hear Classic Jazz and New Age Jazz that has been fused with Drum & Bass, DOCTOR JAZZ works in perky beats on "Un Monde Sans Frime." The folks that love Steppers music will love "Fusion in Fusion", again LOULOU entices with her sexy voice, riding slightly higher than the groove that supports her. Finally I want to "Thank You Very Much" for taking the time out to listen to my opinion on UNIVERSAL REMEDY. That is track 10 of 14 but in addition to this project are four more tracks that finish the album. "Groove Supreme" and three remixes that DJ will love to drop during their set.

Mixtapes tend to be a hit and miss thing/ You have some songs you don't like, but it's usually just snippets, so it's cool. Then you have songs you love, but the snippet factor makes it less appealing. The album starts rightfully with a DJ Spinbad intro, he is a good, underrated DJ. Then it goes into a Killa Priest song, I tend to usually not like him, but out of the WU people he is easily the best. This song is nice, the beat thumps and the lyrics are saying something. Next it goes into this cat HOM, who drops a 16 bar Lyricist Lounge Promo. All I can say is this kid is rediculiously sick on the mic. The track is butter without him, he kills it. I hadn't heard of HOM before this, but I will be checking for him indeed. Scheme Team blesses next, the track is above avarage, and Gean Gray sounds lovely as always. There are simply too many songs on here to break them all down. But it has a lot of definite stand outs, there are some snoozers, but what can you expect? "Rise & Shine" have one of the most buttery songs I've ever heard, too bad it's only a small portion. Mystic's track is incredible, it should have been on her album. Something I found interesting about this release,
it doesn't have too many of the super abstract emcees usually thought of when you think "underground" it's a nice collection of skilled cats. Some you probably never heard of, with 30 tracks you'll find something here you love, probably most of it (I know I did) Marc Ecko is known for having one of the freshest clothing lines ever, and since day one of Ecko Unlimited he has combined urban music to complement his urban cloths. A perfect blend. I can't wait for Underground Airplay version 2.0

5 out of 5 stars this is def. the stuff for my earzs.......2002-06-16

first of all this is fulla too many hot tracks that i am just lovin. rise & shine is on there also with probably my favorite cut that ive heard in years. thats hella hard to find around in the nw... i suggest you buy this cd

5 out of 5 stars The 'Bomb'.......2002-05-23

I live in England and found this c.d in a small record shop. This is without doubt the best Hip-Hop Album I have ever listened to,every tune is spot on, my favourites are the tracks by Mystic,Hieroglyphics and Moss-Def but they all rock...Big time. Every single tune is a party song so without question this is a must have for any Hip-Hop fan.
