Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Quite interesting.......2003-12-18

For his fourth outing, Brian Ales has all but abandoned his jazz approach in favor of hip-hop/ambient/dance/trance/Flamenco/world. Always difficult to classify, Ales here navigates nearly uncharted musical waters. At first it sounds somewhat incoherent, with so many styles clashing: synthesized beats mixing with a wide variety of indigenous flute and reed instruments (courtesy of Matt Darriau), world percussion from Satoshi Takeishi, and Philip Hamilton's "earthereal" (couldn't pass up that apt neologism) vocalizations. Throw in samples from The Choir of the Church of the Apostles Revelation Society, and you approach sensory overload as the music overwhelms then untethers expectations.

Not the kind of thing I could listen to all the time, it is certainly the cure if you're locked into the sonic doldrums, floating on the Sargasso Sea of excessive Crescent City Traditionalism. 4 and 1/2 stars.
