Sure they look pretty and sound pretty and all, but is this Montreal-based quartet ever going to amount to much, you know in the course of "rock history"? Very likely, if their captivating third album, Set Yourself on Fire, is any indication. Vocalists Amy Millan and Torquil Campbell have never harmonized better together, and the whole keyboard-heavy band is at that delectable place where they transcend their influences. Great pop music is not about "originality" (nor has it ever much been); it's a passionate marriage of idea and conviction. Sure, you can still hear the mark of Beulah, the Smiths, New Order, Broken Social Scene and Super Furry Animals in their songs. But the group has never been as confident with their marriage of lush, exuberant dreampop and dark, clever lyrics as they are here. --Mike McGonigal

A rock record with poppiness.......2007-06-15

In many ways, a band like Stars, Broken Social Scene or the New Pornographers somehow manage to make very accessible records without feeling like they were recorded solely because they knew it would sell. Sure songs on this record are quite hooky yet you can instantly tell the difference between these songs or ones from say Good Charlotte or a Simple Plan. Stars last release before it got the remix treatment, Set Yourself on Fire is a very likable record and easy to sing along with and love, that is if you want to.

The album starts off with "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" with vocalists Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan trading verses before they come together at the end. This is an example of a song that gets in your head despite the lack of a proper "chorus" that repeats. "Ageless Beauty" was the big hit of the record and while musically it's quite basic, it's propelled largely by Millan's vocals which are quite ethereal in a way on the song. "Reunion" is another likable track largely sung by Campbell with Millan adding in some flavor. This is another one of those catchy tracks that will become a favorite over time. The rest of the songs are just as memorable although, some like "The First Five Times" aren't that stellar.

My absolute favorite track on the record and probably of their career is the album closer, "Calendar Girl". When taken at face value, lyrically it's very honest in that "life sucks but I'm trying" message and musically it's really 3 chords but damn if Millan doesn't sing it beautifully. When she sings the line "I'm alive" at the end, you're almost not sure if she's celebrating this fact or she's just pointing out the irony considering the subject matter: living without nothing special about it.

Like a lot of bands with duel vocalists, you tend to prefer one over the other (aside from everyone's fav Fab Four). In this case, Millan has one of the best female voices in rock today but Campbell, while no slouch in his own right, doesn't really have the emotive power Millan brings. Kind of reminds me of Oasis' Gallagher bros. with Noel being the more range-y singer but Liam being the most emotive. Granted, a lot of songs on here such as The Big Fight or Your Ex-Lover is Dead work for the trade-offs but when they're primarily Campbell-led, such as the aforementioned "First Five Times" or "He Lied About Death", despite Millan's additions, don't work as well.

All in all, it's probably one of the best records they've done and one of the better "pop rock" releases lately.

Smooth.......2007-03-02

It only took a couple of seconds listening to 'Your Ex-Lover is Dead' for me to decide that I needed to own this album. To be honest, that track stands out for its beautiful orchestration and tone. The instrumentation is well done, with a complementary mix of strings, brass, and your traditional band bits to create a beautiful, uplifting, and sombre tone.

Each song on this album is carefully produced to create a smooth tone which is mostly laidback and embracing. This is music fully imbued with uplifting melancholy.

I own every Stars albums and eps and I'd have to say they broke every expectation that I had before listen to this ... and this was only after the first 30 seconds of your ex-lover is dead.

Every song here is lyrically written with songs of love, passion, nostagia and hurt with a lush overlay of melodies. By the end of the album, you'll surrender and give yourself in to continual listens. This is the soft revolution!

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

I purchased "Telegraphs in Negative" and "Sings Reign" together.

Being from the 'post-rock' genre and having members from GYBE, I had very little fear that this would be a bad purchase. And I was right.

As I describe in my review of "Sings Reign", it's haunting, calming and inspiring... and to be perfectly honest I would probably rate these albums higher than most Godspeed albums (as well as Mogwai, ASMZ, etc) This record I don't like QUITE as much as "Sings Reign", but only by a narrow margin. This is a double disc album, providing 90 minutes of nightmarish dreamscapes... it is even MORE experimental than "Sings Reign" (the addition of more random human scuffling about) and you can almost sense how much more the band members are strung out or intoxicated or whatever. (If you read a blurb about these records, it is stated that they isolated themselves in remote locations with very little contact with the outside world and would stay awake for long periods of time)

In any case, I find both of Fire to Flames' records to be amazing bodies of work. Granted it is not the type of music for everyone. But whether listening to it intensely or just playing in the background... I think it will have a lasting effect on you.

A great addition for any ambient/experimental/post-rock collection.

your indie-suppressing derision wafts tragic like breeze through bombed out ruins. jump here while you can. it's nothing like that it's something completely different and unique and disgusting and beautiful. you can eat it with a spoon, but you would choose not to.

The title aforementioned is the feeling I got from this album...emptiness. A reviewer on a UK site put it very aptly by saying this album is "all your beautiful memories and loves washed up in front of you only to wash away forever," or something like that. This album will drain you if you let it. On first listen you might not know what to think, because there simply isn't that much "music" on here. No real movements. Some songs are a single movement, some are nothing at all really.

So what is it exactly? Well...I'm not really sure. I kind of wanted to know what this collective group (comprised of members of hangedup, godspeed, fly pan am, and someothers(?)) was thinking while making this, or how they did it exactly. They do play things, but it barely has any form, but it's still cooridinated, which is really almost paradoxical. The tracks are very rarely sweet and are usually the worst/confusing/vacuous parts of your life put into musical form. It's almost like the imagery in a silent hill game but for your ears, which if you know what I'm talking about this is quite a thing to experience.

However, this is actually a very difficult album to listen to. One that you literally HAVE to grow accustomed to, because you probably won't really like it that much. I didn't. But after a second listen I was starting to GET it, and when you finally start to get it everything seems to have a bit more of a place. This is by no means a godspeed record, it's nothing close to that. I've heard comparisons drawn to f#a# but this is much more subtle and ambient. But I do feel like f#a# had much more of a purpose, because it does have movements and crescendos. But at the same time this emptiness is what is so attractive about these apparent telegraphs in negative.

On a side note, this cd has some of the coolest packaging I've ever seen. It's almost worth buying the album for this reason alone, I really mean it. It's damn haunting, and as esoteric as you can get. And naturally the track names put question marks in your head. Oh, and don't buy this from fatcat (record co.) if you're not in UK, it's damn expensive.

There's really not much to add to previous reviews other than this album deserves a much wider audience than it probably has. Good lyrics and melodies, great harmonies, and creative instrumentation. This is pop at its absolute best. I can't stop listening to it.

This album is astounding. Simple, sometimes almost lazy sounding indie-rock with a strong sense of eastern European melody; giving off the pungent aroma of a freshly opened bottle of whiskey, and going down just as smooth. It's gypsy rock so thick and rich, it almost satisfies hunger; beautiful music with an anti-christian aesthetic. This is what today's youth need to be eating up by the millions...

Being Irish Catholic, (ok, a ways back) it was sheer blasphemy to pick up this CD. More so that it became like a new religion. The Tom Waits comparison is the most obvious compliment. What isn't so obvious is the perfect blend of new & early music forms - like Stravinsky in reverse. I hear Italian folk, carnival and Nawlins influences mixed with dark moody indy swagger.

With the Tom Waitsesque vocals and the brooding Stone Roses / Morphine style atmosphere, this is new territory which obviously strikes a chord with the musicians who take time out from their main projects to make a go of this vision. Worth their time and worth selling your soul to take the ride.

When it comes to creating sonic ambience, exercising inner demons, revealnig the most tender feelings ,and mixing exotic musical styles and influences, few artists come close to Tom Waits; the boys from Firewater came pretty damn close, very very close. The record opens with two powerful tracks: "Some Strange Reaction" and "Bourbon and Division". The two openers have a near perfect mixture of rock, folk and Eastern European influences. The first two tracks are like a squeaky old elevator that takes you down to a dark, bleak, industralized but nevertheless romantic underground world. The songs in this disk celebrated loveable losers, weird characters, the beauty and the tranquillity in the most unlikely places, spirituality of atheists, hope from despairs, and all the insignificant details of the world ignored by the pop culture. A very good CD indeed, highly recommended. If you enjoy this CD, may I also suggest Mule Variation by Tom Waits and Malediction by Botanica.

Let me just say that Tod A. is God and this album proves it. What a swagger! What an sneer! What a voice! This album will bring you up when you're down and keep you up when you're up. I read a review saying the songs are like little bastard children dancing on the devil's grave. Can I hear an amen, brothers and sister?

The pristine tones and lilting melodies of the Celtic harp are immediately inviting. Celtic Harpestry, a companion to a PBS performance special, explores a sound both traditional and modern in a tasteful and evocative collection. This isn't a purist's album--half of the harpists aren't even from the Celtic isles, and among the album's old Irish chestnuts is "My Heart Will Go On," the love theme from Titanic. The otherwise-joyful Belfast Harp Orchestra tromp through the James Horner tune, almost pulling some subtlety out of its overwrought themes. Turlough O'Carolan, the blind patron saint of the Celtic harp, might wish he were deaf as well, if he could hear it. But the bard would be thrilled to hear the 12-piece BHO playing the traditional "Brian Boru's Set" or one of founder Janet Harbison's zephyrlike originals. Her "Earth, Water, Wind and Fire" elicits shifting textures and colors that belie their traditional roots. The song also exemplifies the ethereal side of the Celtic harp explored on Celtic Harpestry with artists like Rüdiger Oppermann. Playing a wire-strung harp accompanied by bass and keyboards, the German harpist soars through crystalline melodies whether he's playing traditional tunes or originals. The most traditional sound actually comes from the American players. Cheryl Ann Fulton gives a straight-up rendition of "Breton Medley," and jazz harpist Deborah Henson-Conant is refreshingly restrained, faithfully rendering "Londonderry Aire (Danny Boy)" and "The Minstrel Boy." Although Celtic Harpestry focuses on slow airs, there are robust performances here, including those by Máire Ni Chathasaigh's group and the harp and vocal duo of Sileas. Outside of the Titanic love theme, Celtic Harpestry is an elegantly wrought collection. --John Diliberto

Celtic Meets Classical.......2007-07-12

Hard rock it ain't. Celtic Harpestry: A Contemporary Celtic Collection may cite "contemporary" in its title, but the style is classic. Rich harmonies and intricate musical textures rise to a crescendo in "Earth, Water, Wind And Fire," the final cut, performed by the Belfast Harp Orchestra.

This collection overlaps several genres. Celtic, classical and New Age meet in what may be the instrument most associated with classical melodies.

If you are a fan of Rap or Hip Hop, keep looking. If you want a hoedown, this is not going to be your cuppa joe. But if you are looking for something elegant - background music for a business or important meeting, for example - this is a wonderful, understated choice.

Excellent Celtic Cd.......2006-12-30

A sibling to "Harpestry," this is a wonderful cd. I am a harper and head up a Celtic Harp Choir at my church (I'm a fulltime church music director), and I have used this cd as a model for my musicians. It's very pleasant to listen to, and you definitely get a good feel for the Celtic style. I highly recommend this!

This uplifting compilation CD from Imaginary Road Records, actually the soundtrack to the public television special "Celtic Harpestry at Lismore Castle, Ireland", is simply beautiful. Especially wonderful are the five numbers by the Belfast Harp Orchestra, an ensemble of 12 harpists who demonstrate remarkable intonation and stunning coordination as they play together on instruments that are difficult enough just to play alone. What a great concept, and what great musicianship! Also featured are individual performers such as Maire Ni Chathasaigh on Irish harp, Rudiger Oppermann on wire-strung harp, Cheryl Ann Fulton on a contemporary lever harp, the harp and song duo Sileas, and Deborah Henson-Conant on a "Camac `Baby Blue' Celtic electroharp". Other instruments, including Uilleann pipes and whistle, violin, viola and concertina, occasionally join in, but the focus is on the harp itself. In all its many forms and combinations, the harpestry on this recording remains soothingly delicate in timbre while at the same time scintillating in technique--in short, a pure delight. If you enjoy "Celtic Harpesty", you're sure to like it's companion release, "Harpestry: A Contemporary Collection", featuring more of a worldwide assortment of harpers. I always had a desire to learn to play the Celtic harp...and the PBS special and especially this CD made that desire boil over. Don't buy another harp CD before you've listened to this one!
No matter how many times I have listened to this recording, I ALWAYS break into a smile when the Belfast Harp Orchestra begins to play. Nothing prepares you for that 12-harp sound!

The best harpestry CD!.......2001-07-23

One day in a music shop, my hand knocked three CDs off of a rack. The first CD, though the case was cracked, caught my eye. I bought it five minutes later. In this sweetly harmonized collection, nearly all the songs are wonderful. I would have bought the CD for only My Heart Will Go On-the song is a skillful take of the Titanic (movie) theme, and it seems almost to have a voice of its own. This is a must-have for any harp music lover!

After Azure Ray disbanded, member Orenda Fink put her energies into a solo record in 2005, called "Invisible Ones". Upon touring in support of that album with various revolving band members, she chose the cream of the crop and formed a new group called Art Belle, then changed it to Art In Manila (a nod to radio host Art Bell's exodus to the Phillipines). On this release, the band flirts playfully with genre wanderlust without ever abandoning cohesion. Moody slow-burners follow four-to-the-floor rockers that butt up against serene ballads.
