Product Description
The multicultural sextet Casablanca was one of the first bands signed to Elton John's Rocket label. Produced by Vic Smith, the 11 tracks for this album were recorded at Rockfield Studios, Wales, UK, in 1974. The music is predominantly an early UK example of the sort of soul/funk sound that was already hip in the USA & would become a significant part of worldwide music during the second half of the 70s, other influences flavor these recordings as well. Second Sight. 2003.

4 out of 5 stars Sympathique- Pink Martini.......2007-07-16

I enjoyed this CD very much. The Music is great, if you're interested in hearing real musical insturment on a record, this is it.
You have a bit of french, english, spanish,a bit of samba, this is musical range at its best. The leader singer China Forbes voice is refreshing, and soothing.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Release from the Queens crew.......2007-05-29

Queens and Hip Hop go together like Bread and Butter...

Marley Marl, Legendary Juice Crew, Kool G. Rap, NaS, Mobb Deep, Cormega, Capone-N-Noreaga, Tribe Called Quest, and many many more emerged from Queens from the late 80's to the early 90's. All of them are talented and released good to even classic albums. Some in rapid succession.

Lost Boyz is one of Queens chosen... However don't get it twisted. Lyrically they are a step below all the others I just mentioned with the exception of CNN.

This however is an entertaining notable release. Not a must have, but there is a few tracks that ARE must haves.
The Production throughout the whole album is on point, and at times outstanding. The Musical Concepts are equally great. However, Mr. Cheeks has a really simple rhyme scheme and never changes it up. This is what keeps him on the level of a average lyricsyst, instead of a master of his craft like a Gza, Rakim, or NaS.
Funny thing is Mr. Cheeks actually wrote ALL the lyrics to every song on here, and him an freeky tah are pretty much the only ones who did anything. Makes me ask "Why are those other two even here? Is there job to just stand around and every now and then say yeah, or yo?"

Thease are the three best songs on the Album... "Renee" is one of my favorite Storytelling tracks ive ever heared. "Lifestyles" is a nice social commentary, and "Jeeps,Lex Coups,Bimaz & Benz" is a dope party track that lil Kim bit off on her song "The Jump Off".

1. Renee
2. Lifestyles Of Da Rich an Shameless
3. Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimaz & Benz

5 out of 5 stars Ahh yes...Another one........2006-09-23

How could you not not own this and call yourself a hip hop fan. If you don't own this stop what you're doing and pick this up right away. Freaky Tah & Mr. Cheeks bring us their best record ever! If you remember this was considered mainstream at the time...I wish mainstream still brought us music like this. A great LP from the LOST BOYZ!!! RIP Freaky Tah

4 out of 5 stars Lost And Found.......2005-04-15

This debut from New York's southside Jamica, Queens crew led by Mr. Cheeks has made boyz with their hustlin', partying, street grooves on Legal Drug Money. With memerable, catchy hooks and freestyle rhymes the Lost Boyz had themselves an almost classic. Their party, upbeat joints like "Music Makes Me High" and "Get Up" are what makes this such a hot commodity. On the other end of the spectrum we have "Renee". This is a song mourning over a death. Besides, Mr. Cheeks uses the word love and keeps it raw and hardcore. Member Freaky Tah also represented on here with Mr. Cheeks and with a solo song, "1,2,3". Going back to their most obvious freestyle flow, listen to the two of them on "All Right". A couple more upbeat tracks would have absolutely made this a classic.

4 out of 5 stars Lost Boyz- Legal Drug Money .......2005-02-04

Hard to believe its coming up on nine years since the Lost Boyz dropped their debut "Legal Drug Money" (1996). Back then the Queens group consisted of members Mr. Cheeks, Freaky Tah (Dead) Pretty Lou and Spigg Nice (37 Year Jail Sentence). The fact that I still get play from this cd years later, shows that the Lost Boys made memorable music. My favorite track on this album is the single "Renee" a track about losing a love to death. They did not always shine on every track but on tracks like "Music Makes Me High", "Lifestyles of the Rich and Shameless, "Legal Drug Money", "Straight From The Ghetto" and the thugged out "1,2,3" they were unforgettable, excelling in delivering reality street raps. This is an album I recommend for the collection, Lost Boyz brought a distinct style and made an impact on Hip Hop, their is no possibility of reunion albums making the limited material they dropped all the more worth checking out.

Amazon.com's Best of 1998

From the time he toured Senegal with Jimmy Cliff in the late '70s, Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin wanted to return and record with local musicians. He finally got his wish in 1997, and the fruit produced by the journey was this collaboration with Senegalese star Baaba Maal. They're joined here by Maal's band, Daande Lenol, which translates as "nomad soul"--a fitting description for an album that is a restless blend of jazz sophistication and African syncopation. Restless is a dirty word when applied to roving husbands or spooked horses, but Ranglin's insatiable desire to explore is a treasure to behold. --Keith Moerer

Amazon.com

Jamaican jazz guitarist Ernest Ranglin, at 66 years old, is more adventurous than most musicians half his age. Few could travel to Senegal and record with Baaba Maal and his band, Daande Lenol. Fewer still could make such a successful melding of styles. The secret is that Ranglin becomes a part of the band, trading licks with the kora, letting the others speak loudly, then adding his own distinctive voice to the proceedings. This is very definitely an "African" album, highlighted by some wonderful writing (Maal's "Minuit," in particular, is a standout) and marvelous playing. Ranglin is at the top of his form; he doesn't need long solos to make his point. He's taken his music to the roots, and in doing so, has invigorated himself. An unadulterated delight. --Chris Nickson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2001-10-24

Ernest Ranglin at his best. His best collaboration also I find. This is a truly wonderful album, inventive and warm. Listen to "Anna", or "Ala Walee", those tunes will make you cry. Mind you the rest of the album is of the same quality : a Masterpiece !! Tunes are fantastic, open and imaginative, rythms roll beautifully, the music flows... Thanks to Ernest and the rest of the musicians for their wonderful work !

5 out of 5 stars Sublime: a masterpiece.......1999-10-04

I don't know where to start on this...I have been a Baaba Maal fan for years, and recently turned on to Ernest with Below the Bassline. When I heard they were working together, I suspected the results would be exceptional, but this!!! Any true music lover should buy this CD, whether you are a teenage death-metal fanatic, or a 65 year old classical musician. The interplay of Ranglins' guitar with the lilting Kora throughout this collection is a musical achievement that boggles the mind. The Kora is (technically) a more "primitive" instrument than the guitar...Ranglin works around the limitations of the older technology deftly, never exposing them, only supporting and enhancing with a virtuoso's skill. The conversational interplay throughout these tracks is a testament to musicians who listen first, play second. To any teacher of music out there: give this to your students after studying it yourself, then go over it note by note...it's like a manual on how to make great music. The first time I listened to this, it sent shivers down my back and literally made me cry.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome blend of modern be-bop jazz & West African roots.......1999-08-21

BUY THIS CD NOW... one of the best kept secrets on the music scene. Years ahead of his time, this will be an industry standard to compare others by when world music comes into it's own here in the U.S.

5 out of 5 stars Rokhard Ernest.......1999-03-23

Ernest played WOMAD Auckland 28 February 1999, the last leg of the South Africa & Adelaide WOMAD circuit.

Prior to Baaba Maals show Ernest Ranglin did his instrumental set with a backbeat that was crisp and crystal clear. All the drops were in the right place on tracks like "Up on the downstroke" He laid it up so sweet & simple just like the master he is. Double bassman Byron White laid down some wicked wicked basslines that added a solid punch to a show that had everyone rapt. Baaba Maal called Ernest on for his show. It too was FANTASTIC.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, subtle, rhythmic - a class act........1998-08-07

I have only recently found out about Ernest Ranglin which is surprising as I am a Ska fan of long standing and he was the first artist signed to Island Records! As with other areas of music (Afro-Cuban All Stars) there has been a recent upsurge of interest in musicians from an earlier generation. So with Ranglin he is no spring chicken, however he is a very accomplished musician who you should hear. If you are nervous I suggest that you start with his "Below the Bassline" CD and then move onto this one. If you all ready know Ranglin then proceed with confidence -it is different but real nice, kind of reminiscent of the Ry Cooder/Ali Farka Toure CD (look it up check that out -superb stuff) but with that subtle Ska lilting undertone.

4 out of 5 stars Peace And Hair Grease.......2006-02-17

Lost Boyz second and last release prior to the death of member Freaky Tah, Love, Peace & Nappiness' lead singles took us on familiar ground with the group, but overall was a whole different experience. "Summer Time" is the lead song for this album that was a good example of the group's signature style of music. Continuing with the mainstream sound, "Me & My Crazy World" produced by DJ Ron G is about being in love with two women. For a more lyrical, darker experience, "Beasts From The East" featuring A+, Redman & Canibus takes the group to unfamiliar heights that continue with "My Crew" featuring A+ & Canibus. The slow sample of the title track solidified a position for the Boyz with a feel good mainstream song. "So Love" is about the feeling within a relationship over R&B harmonies. Continuing with their up-beat formula of a gritty type bounce groove, "What's Wrong" they admit "...we can do this all night..." with "Certain Things We Do" following the direction and aim. Freaky Tah flows solo on "Get Your Hustle On" with his raspy voice added to the album's versatility. The story line on "Tight Situations" was narrated well by Mr. Cheeks as the horn section made the flow more intense. The album's elevation declines as the remainder of Love, Peace & Nappiness was more or less the love and peace of the album.

Because my boy Freeky Tah had gotten killed but on this album he is showing out, good beats good lyrics and Tah R.I.P.!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Lost Boyz- Love, Peace & Nappiness.......2005-07-13

The Lost Boyz (Mr. Cheeks, Freaky Tah, Pretty Lou and Spigg Nice) second album "Love, Peace & Nappiness" (1997) is a solid release. LB starts the album off strong with their own version of "Summer Time". They follow it up with the exceptional Ron G produced "Me and My Crazy World" a track about being in love with two women. Mr. Cheeks then collabs with Canibus, A+ and Redman on the raw "Beasts From the East". The title track "Love, Peace and Nappiness" feat. King Keiwanee & Da Blak Pharoah is something special, an upbeat LB anthem. Another track for the ladies follows in the laidback "So Love". A+ and Canibus make another appearance on "My Crew", then Cheeks and Tah drop some decent tracks in "What's Wrong" and "Certain Things We Do". Mr. Cheeks recalls growing up on "Games" feat. Luv Bug Starski. Freaky Tah rhymes with a deep flow on "Get Your Hustle On". "Tight Situations" has LB & Queens Most Wanted telling a thugged out story of a jack. The Lost Boyz provide another outstanding track on the Bink Dawg produced "From My Family To Yours" (Dedication) feat. Queens Most Wanted, LB puts mad heart into this cut while remembering the deaths of Pac, BIG and friends. The Lost Boyz provided a memorable album with "Love, Peace & Nappiness", one which I recommend for the collection.

5 out of 5 stars Real ..........2002-09-17

When I chill out and blow some smoke into the air, I play my LOST BOYZ cd's and I'm telling you it's lovely. LOST BOYZ are some original catz. They keep to themselves, never cross each others boundaries and keep it real. I respect their group to the fullest. To listen to their music is to know them and what they represent. All I can say is, their talented brotha's and their music is off the chain!!!!

4 out of 5 stars No Happiness just Nappiness.......2001-10-30

I gave this album only four stars because I know personally there was a lot of tension building up while recording this album and had it not been there (the tension) this album would have been off the hook.

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection from the ex-Temptation.......2005-05-09

This is a good, budget find; Another of those "Motown Legends" CD's which collect a wide variety of tracks, including some hard to find songs.

Of course, David Ruffin was a great vocalist, though I preferred his work with the Temptations over his solo work. Upon listening to this collection, I found that he did some good solo work.

The 2 big hits "My Whole World Ended" & "Walk Away From Love" are here. I always liked "World" which always reminds me of a classic track from his Temptations days. When "Walk Away from Love" came out in the mid-1970's I have to admit that I didn't care for it. I always thought Ruffin's voice sounded worn out. Hearing the song again, it does have a good arrangement & is enjoyable in it's own way.

The "World" follow up single, "I've Lost Everything" is well sung, but the lyrics are awful and over wrought. Another single, the gospel-like ballad "I'm So Glad I Fell For You" is quite good, though slightly overproduced.

I always thought "Blood Donors Needed" seemed like a strange title for a song. It isn't a bad number, a kind of funky, "let's all help each other" Curtis Mayfield styled song.

I remember hearing the song "Off & On" which I think was done by somebody else. Ruffin's version is very nice - a good mid-tempo song. He also does decent versions of "Put A Little Love In Your Heart" & "Everlasting Love" (which inspired his friend, Carl Carlton, to record the song & have a huge hit with it).

Van McCoy was involved in some of these selections & his involvement in nicely evident, showing that he had a lot more in him than just the "Hustle".

So, a nice budget priced collection that displays David Ruffin's talents quite nicely. Worth checking out before investing in a more expensive collection.

    5 out of 5 stars "A Terrific David Ruffin's Sound".......2001-07-05

The songs of David Ruffin on this CD are so romantic and relaxing. Good songs to listen to when you come home from a tiring day of work. Walk Away From Love, My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me), Everlasting Love, Put A Little Love In Your Heart, and You're My Peace Of Mind are my favorites. I'd never heard the others before acquiring this CD, but they were just as great to listen to. I would definitely recommend this CD to anyone, especially if they are a David Ruffin's fan and even if they aren't, they surely would enjoy this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Tall,Tan,Talented,Temptin.......1999-12-10

David Ruffin, one of r&b's pure singers, with this release has proved to us once again that he was one of the premier balladeers. The way David can go from a tender touch to an incredible wail in just a couple of notes, reminds us just how remarkable his voice was.

    5 out of 5 stars Soulful".......1999-07-28

This CD serves as a nice sampler to the genius that was David Ruffin. From 'Walk Away From Love" to "Off and On" the power in Ruffin's voice is ever present. Truly one of the greatest singers of all time.

    Album Description

Recorded live at The Misfits Nightclub, Chicago, Illinois, September 1981.

Early '80s funky, demented raw punk/jazz from New York City's maestro of the New Wave. A superb live concert recording, mastered by James Chance.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Everyone's a Critic.......2005-11-16

I think it's unfair that James Chance is getting such a bad rap for scratchy vocals and twangy, snapping sax solos. Everyone seems to be looking at this from a prospective that he's some kind of lounge act, or wannabe jazz band. Truth is he's a part of the earliest forms of punk rock music. James Chance encompasses the entire attitude of the adolescent New York street dwellers. He's a symbol of teenage lust, hate, confusion, and jealousy. The idea that his music is horrible makes it so much better, the fact that he can't play sax gives it that flair that seperates it from others. He's bad, he knows it, and guess what? He doesn't care. James Chance is a peek at what the kids of New York were thinking, doing, and loving. He encapsulates a generation that we have long forgotten about.

    3 out of 5 stars decent poseur.......2002-03-01

james chance is very very schticky. his pose as an ultra funky jazzbo with violent tendencies works sometimes. it works on about half of this. first off, his vocals and sax are VERY offputting: if you're not into a certain amount of shrill annoyance in your music, stop right here. his bands have never been the new JB's as he thinks they are. and his disgust and contempt for everything around him isn't very effectively put across. he comes off more often sounding like a very crabby 4 year old...uh..singing from heroin's point of view. all that said, this is okay but not a legendary lost recording by any means. to experience this fiend at his "best", check out the "no new york" album or "live in new york".

    3 out of 5 stars A White Noise Supremacist?.......2001-06-12

Having seen in actual club dates this character with the Elvis-like conk, the band which sounded as though it wanted to be the JBs the minute it figured out a way to quit their bad imitations of those who were trying to figure out the better way to mimick artsy-fartsy loungelizard grist like Roxy Music or ABC, and an alto saxophone style which sounded like a berserk chipmunk whose throat had a mind of its own, I had figured that at minimum he was close to being too unbelievable to get on records. But he'd actually by God done it, as part of a legendary sampler of New York's psychotic-reaction No Wave antimovement of the late 1970s called "No New York"; and, on an album (approximately 1980-81) for the semi-indie JVC label, on which one side he billed it "James White and the Blacks" and let the pseudo-JB backbeats run the show and, on the other side, calling it James Black and the Contortions and letting the pseudo-JB backbeats get beaten to within an inch of their lives by amphetamine-crazed sewer rats in a Bowery back alley, and the whole thing was a classic horrible enough to love on the sneak workout, anyway. This live set doesn't exactly diminish Chance's reputation as a 70s-80s New York white noise supremacist, but neither does it exactly elevate whatever it was that made him and his gang such an underground draw in the first place. Add a star for chutzpah, but that's about it.

On the other hand, trying to figure out what's missing is almost impossible, considering how many screws were loose to begin with. (As a saxophonist, he seems to have caught all the distortion and the nuance of Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler, arguably the kings of what Lester Bangs would have called jazz skronk, and none of the roots feeling that animated them in the first place.) Best, probably, to listen to this as sort of an idea of what it might have been like to overdose on codeine while hearing Coleman fronting the guitars of the JBs linked to the Stooges' original rhythm section after they'd finally figured out how to nail "Cold Sweat". And if you think that's stretching absurdity, be reminded (or forewarned, as the case may be) that Ornette Coleman himself actually had the audacity to play on the first Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band album.

    4 out of 5 stars Almost lost.......1999-12-03

I have always liked James Chance, Contortions, and whatever other name he went by. This CD starts out fast and typically funky good. The sax is up to par and never lets you down. My big complaint is the vocals (especially the background) should have been mixed down a little, especially on White Cannibal-it hurt my ears! And then there's the gratuitous "Heroin" that has been on almost all of his recordings in one version or another, or so it seems. So here we are with a decent recording and then it gets blown away by including a horribly taped "My Infatuation" that was ripped out of an old "Live in NY" tape and tacked on to this CD as a (filler?). Doesn't matter though, I wish he was still out there doing it.

5 out of 5 stars If Jimmy Ray Vaughn was the blackest white man, Chance..........1999-05-26

is the blackest white man alive. And he's barely alive at that. The only thing inflating this man's loungesting suits and crying sax is the HooDooism of jazz incarnate. James Chance should become a theme park for Japanese and German tourists. If you like John Zorn and are tired of John Lurie, get this CD before it's out-of-print again.

This collection features a rare Charlie Rouse recording from 1965 with McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard, and Billy Higgins as well as four impeccable arrangements performed by Tadd Dameron in 1961 with an octet featuring Sam Rivers, Donald Byrd, Julius Watkins, Curtis Fuller, and Cecil Payne. Also included is the sole salvageable take from the only Sonny Stitt session Alfred Lion ever produced--a disaster despite the presence of Dexter Gordon. Herbie Hancock's earliest recorded attempt at R&B are also to be found here. These are some of the treasures on The Lost Sessions, a limited-edition collection of footnotes to the history of Blue Note Records assembled by reissue maven Michael Cuscuna in conjunction with the label's 60th anniversary. Cuscuna came across these tracks as he reevaluated ones originally unreleased or rejected while updating the comprehensive Blue Note discography, which he published in 1988. While there's not enough music to make complete albums on their own, these loose ends provide a fascinating peek inside the vaults of one of jazz's most significant and influential record companies. --Mitchell Feldman

4 out of 5 stars A nice collection of rareities.......2000-11-29

This cd is, basically, a collection of outtakes dating from 1961 to 1966. Tracks from sessions including: Tadd Dameron, Curtis Fuller, Freddie Hubbard, Charlie Rouse, McCoy Tyner, Paul Chambers, Donald Byrd, Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon, Ike Quebec, Stanley Turrentine, Grant Green, and Herbie Hancock that did not make it onto album for one reason or another are collected here almost as a footnote to Blue Note's massive reissue catalog. The opening track "One for Five", penned by the underrated tenor, Charlie Rouse is a Highlight. Freddie Hubbard, Rouse, and McCoy Tyner all produce memorable performances. Tracks 2-5 feaure an octet lead by Tadd Dameron, and have been for years some of the most requested of the unreleased tapes in the Blue Note Vaults. The charged "The Elder Speaks", and the lovely, almost haunting, "Lament for the Living" stand out. Another underrated tenor, Ike Quebec, leads two quartets for some solid, swinging hard bop. Sonny Stitt and Dexter Gordon face off for a track lifted from the ashes of a failed session, and Herbie Hancock closes the cd with some of his earliest venturing into R&B. The music here is never really earthshattering, but is consistantly enjoyable. Anyone who is a fan of these artists, of just looking to gobble up all of the jazz from this classic period of Blue Note recordings should pick this cd up, whereas new fans of the music should pick from the hundreds of classic Blue Note albums before purchasing this one.

    4 out of 5 stars Groooovy..........2001-08-07

In Lost Found Soul, DJ Spinna and company join the "neo soul" movement taking you on 12 (yeah not 13, just read on) soulful journeys. You won't find the tiny, hollowed-out ranges of most of today's female r&b and pop singers here, no siree. Instead, sisters Monet, Jazmin, and Angela Johnson (a talented singer, song writer, classical violinist and pianist -- whew!) pour their heart and soul into one funk filled cd, as they sing about the ups and downs of life while at the same time, each one shows the listener the full range of their singing capabilities.

In LFS, the album's star producers: DJ Spinna and Ticklah tickle you with pieces of funk induced hip hop. In LFS, both producers seemingly allow the album's perspective singers to shine through their peices. But remember, this album ain't just about it's singers. Spinna and Ticklah are also given their own time to showcase their abilities in, "DJ Song" and "Funktacuda" -- proving the two aren't merely token DJs along for the ride. The only album's shortcoming I felt was, "Divided Dreams" produced by Da Wiz luckily lies at the end of the cd. Like something irriely out of a rejected Cash Money, Montell Jordan joint, a bothersome drum machine and some cat adding an incessant, "yea, yea, yea, yeah" into the hook, drowns out Monet's gentle crooning. Flutes come about midway through the song but its too late. It simply doesn't belong on the cd. However, it'll take more than just one joint to bog down a good cd. In the end, the smooth, claming production of Spinna and Ticklah, lovely live instrumentation provided by Angela's group, Cooly's Hotbox and of course the vocalists make what is seemingly lost in the myriad of today's watered down soul and r&b -- found again.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Stuff Version.......2006-10-17

Hey Donna Summer fans, this is the only place that you can find this extended version of Donna Summer Hot Stuff. Its the single version but she ad libs more at the end, its about a minute more and i have never found this version on any Donna Summer compilation. I dont know why this version isnt on any of her cds, but its truly cool with a different ending.

4 out of 5 stars Chic and Chic-influenced music, plus some other stuff.......2005-04-07

Of all of the CD's Rhino issued in "The Disco Years" series, this is the only one that has an underlying theme. The majority of the songs are either by Chic, produced by Chic, or were heavily influenced by Chic. Here is a track by track review:

    1. Good Times by Chic: Their last big hit, went all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. A timeless classic.

    2. High Society by Norma Jean: Former Chic vocalist. I am not sure why she left the group to go solo, but the question is, why did she bother? She certainly did not achieve any success as a solo artist and the songs were still written and produced by Chic. The song is great, but it is for all intents purposes a Chic song.

    3. He's the Greatest Dancer by Sister Sledge: "We are Family" may have been a bigger hit, but to me this Chic-produced recording is the Sledge's best song ever. Another classic from 1979.

    4. Spacer by Sheila & B. Devotion: Another song produced by Chic, but totally forgettable. Chic produced other, much better songs than this one that could have been included here.

    5. I'm Coming Out by Diana Ross: From the marvelous Chic-produced "Diana" album. This was easily Diana Ross' best album and this track was one of her best songs.

    6. I Like Love by Norma Jean: Another Norma Jean solo recording that is undistinguishable from her work with Chic. Another good song, but I think possibly the reason why Chic as a group started to falter after 1979 is that they started to spread themselves too thin. I mean, aside from their own records, they were working with Diana Ross, Sister Sledge, Norma Jean, etc.

    7. I Love You More by Rene and Angela: Not produced by Chic, but decidedly influenced by Chic. A good song, even if it does seem like a bit of a rip-off.

    8. Keep it Comin' Love by KC and the Sunshine Band: This song was a hit before Chic became popular, so you can't accuse them of stealing that guitar riff from Chic. Hmmm, maybe Chic stole from them? A great song that I remember having on a vinyl 45 back in 1977 when I was 9 years old.

    9. Fresh by Kool and the Gang: Why oh why is this god-awful song here?! It was released way after the disco era (1985), it is certainly not a disco song, and it is quite likely Kool & the Gang's 2nd worse song ever behind "Cherish".

    10. In the Bush by Musique: A very sexually risque song. Now, there was good sexual-inuendo disco music ("Love to Love You Baby" is the perfect example), but this song is just embarassing and it was music like this that sped up the death of disco.

    11. I'm Caught Up (In a One Night Love Affair) by Inner Life: A good, if somewhat forgettable song.

    12. A Lover's Holiday by Change: The Chic influences are quite apparent on this disco classic.

Tracks 13, 14 & 15 were released after the official disco era, they are technically not disco songs, they are categorically early 80's dance/techno tunes, they are not particularly good songs, and Rhino should be ashamed of themselves for including them on this CD.

    16. Hot Stuff by Donna Summer: Rhino redeems themselves by including one of Donna's best songs. Even though she was dubbed the Queen of Disco, it is because of songs like this that Donna has survived and thrived after disco died.

    17. Paradise by Change: Another great song by the dance/studio group Change, and once again heavily influenced by the Chic sound.

    18. Lost in Music by Sister Sledge: This Chic production failed to have the same impact as "He's the Greatest Dancer" or "We are Family", but a great song nonetheless.

Buy this CD for the great Chic and Chic influenced music, but skip over the other tracks that are a waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars The best single collection of disco out there........2003-11-08

There's no other way to put it: this collection is a must for anyone who loves disco. The first six tracks are absolutely essential. French idol Sheila's Chic-produced hit "Spacer" is very hard to find, and is among the greatest of disco songs ever made. It has been sampled in Alcazar's 2001 hit "Crying At the Discotheque." Diana Ross' Chic-produced "I'm Coming Out" is another 1980 song that ranks in top disco essentials. "I Like Love" is classic Chic work--produced for former member Norma Jean. Change tracks are another bonus. Get this CD!

4 out of 5 stars lost in classics.......2003-01-04

i really liked the selections of songs but i was dissapointed with the length of the songs, there all the edited versions, for a compilation like this with hard to find songs they should put the long versions it bought back some good memories but again i felt a little empty with the short versions here.

    4 out of 5 stars Club Classics.......2002-05-02

If you want a collection of radio hits, this disc will disappoint you, with a few exceptions. However, if you want a collection of cuts that the DEEJAYS played in the clubs, this is a great series. Yes many of these will be unfamiliar to you unless you were there, but I guarantee you they sound great with your amp cranked to '11' and 50 to 100 people all up on their feet dancing. If you missed that era and want to know what it was like I recommend this CD and some of the others in the series. This may not have been mixed by a deejay, but a deejay definitely provided the list.
