Suprising.......2007-06-15
After purchasing many compilations I began to fear that I would never again hear a cd as good as my first (Siddharta Vol. 1) but this cd woke me up. Some songs are better than others. "Siempre Me Quedará" for example is one of the best songs I've heard in months and all are consistantly good except for one song called "Carmela" which sounds like something my grandparents would dance to.
When I realised that Putumayo made many discs with many different themes without sticking to 1 theme I assumed it would be commercial and weak, but the disc outdoes most buddha bar or hotel costes compilations!
A great Listen, I highly recommend it.
Speak Spanish or Not, This CD is Great.......2007-04-10
I am a Spanish student and am nearly fluent. It's fun to listen to this CD and know what they're saying, but even if you can't speak a word of Spanish, this CD will retain a special place on your shelf (or a permanent place in your CD player). The music varies from tangoes to salsas to mambos. I especially enjoy listening to this CD in my car because... it's just plain fun to listen to.
Smooth and Sexie.......2007-03-13
All the cuts offer a tasty bite of Latin flavor. Latin Jazz and Euro fusion. Great listening music or as a back drop to accent a dinner party. The music is captivating, enchanting, and just a pleasure to listen. This is the kind of music that goes great with a sunset, wine, and a friend.
Learn Spanish and groove at the same time: Latin Lounge.......2007-01-04
I just bought this CD at the airport in San Jose, Costa Rica. It was playing over the loudspeaker in the gift shop and I was hooked. Happy to help the local economy but I could have saved some $ if I had bought it on amazon. This is an amazing CD. Not only is the music great, but you can also improve your Spanish by listening to the lyrics. If you like groovy Latin music, buy this now.
Putumayo.......2006-12-15
PUTUMAYO is awesome music, a real eye opener. Similar in many ways to the BUDDHA BAR approach but different flavour.
Anyone who enjoys this cd may want to try MANU CHAO (proxima estacion ... ESPERANZA) for another trully great Latin American music.
This is definitely one of the easiest CD's to pop in, along with Nuevo Latino .... anytime anywhere ... just makes you enjoy the moment so much more.

Café Del Mar's Volume 5 (recently released for the first time in the U.S.) oozes warm, fuzzy, and thoroughly provocative trip-hop laced tuneage sans the shadow of conventional electronica. As is the way with the Del Mar catalog, a true gem sits amid the collection waiting to be discovered. In this case, it is the superb "Les Negresses Vertes" from Face a la Mer (a.k.a. a Nick Warren project from the early 1990s) given a thoroughly good dubbing by the great Massive Attack. Only the KLF-like spatial dreamweaving of Lamb's "Transfatty Acid (Kruder & Dorfmeister remix edit)" comes close to bettering it.
Elsewhere, Levitation's "More Than Ever People" is pure orange sunsets on shimmering waves, the warmth of its backbeat adding sensuality, while the retro-disco of French act Ame Strong's "Tout Est Bleu" has the rounded curves of bottom-end as opposed to the sharpened corner of dancefloor disco. Overall, the way to enjoy Volume 5 is to adhere to cliché No. 177 (the sum is stronger than individual parts), dim the lights, find some romantic company, and let the music do the talking. --Steffan Chirazi

Customer Reviews:
Not Bad.......2007-07-12
Volume 5 isn't a bad mix, but is definitely not the finest of the Cafe Del Mar series. Volumes 4, 6 and 7 are far more relaxing and have better flow than this volume. Nonetheless, not bad for background music if you are entertaining and not intently listening to the album.
Chill.......2007-05-12
Bought this on a whim, actually it was one of the suggested picks from amazon. I put it on but never really listen to it. Definitely background music. Its got like weird orchestral and indian stuff going on, but its good. I like Talk with Myself.
the series did get abit tired..........2006-06-05
One of my favourite tracks ever from the series is the last track on Volumen Ocho, Plum Crazy by Celestial. And if you like that sound, then you'll love the albums from Hong Kong's Celestial. Check them out, they are titled:
Hong Kong Dub Station
Happy Valley
Spirit House
it's a deeper dubbier sound that most of Cafe Del Mar, more real instruments, and more space...
My favorite Cafe del Mar so far!.......2006-01-06
I'm not sure if I can articulate how amazing this cd is. It really grooves and flows. The beats are more lively than some of the other volumes, but this is exactly what I have been looking for! The other Cafe del Mar's have taken a few listens before I really liked it, but I got into this one immediately. I try to work while listening to this and all of sudden I just get caught up in the grooves and forget about work. I am also a big fan of volume 7, but volume 5 doesn't have the prominent vocals of v.7 (not that either is bad or good- they are just different).
Disappointed.......2005-10-16
There are a few tracks that I really enjoyed, but on the whole I was disappointed with the CD.

Customer Reviews:
More great Motown .......2007-06-24
As a native Detroiter (not the suburbs baby!) and a teen of the 60s, I feel really protective of Motown and Motown music. When I heard of this Latin remix I groaned, but thought I'd listen first before throwing up my hands in despair and organizing a mass protest. But, to my surprise, I actually like this remix! There is enough of the orginal beat that I can still sing loudly along and out of tune as I do with the rest of my Motown CDs.
If you are a Motown purist like I am, I don't think you will regret buying this latest remix.
A Mix Too Far.......2007-05-27
I'm a child of the 50's who grew up in the '60's with the 'Sound Of Young America" so generally I don't take too kindly to masterpieces being remixed! However there are a few exceptions like "Stoned Love" on "Motown Remixed Vol 1" and the brilliant remix of Marvin & Tammi's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" on the new "Ashford and Simpson Songbook" but these are rare occurrences. IMHO there is no excuse for the total lack of respect for the classic tracks which have been completely destroyed in this latest volume which I sincerely hope will be the last. To me it's a bit like someone putting a wig & false nose on the Mona Lisa! It's a gimmick & one that gets my hackles rising as I'm convinced that it's all done for monetary gain and has no artistic merit whatsoever. "Motown Remixed Vol 2" has a Latin theme and to be honest there's only a couple of tracks that sound as though they weren't remixed by Humboldt Bear & PJ! What's next I wonder; heavy metal Motown, the punk side of Motown or Motown goes country? The mind boggles. OK now that I've got that off my chest I'll go back & lie down in a darkened room whilst listening to some plain, ordinary, natural, unmixed Motown. I suggest that you all do the same.
Finally-Remixes That Really Make Sense.......2007-05-23
Naturally when I first heard about the Motown Remixed project I was expecting yet another in a long line of remix albums featuring housy dance mixes.I was very enthusiastic to find the truth that a lot of respect was given to the Motor City classics on the first remix volume, which I heard but do not own.So needless to say I bought this.Vol.2 is a very different kind of musical affair-it takes songs like "Shotgun","Love Is Like A Heatwave","Don't Look Any Further" and even Diana Ross's disco hit "The Boss" and gives them a strong latin feel, complete with hot horns, salsa beats and in most cases alterations of the tempo. The original vocals, especially in the case of The Tempts "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" were sped up a bit to accomodate the quicker tempo-and this is a song covered by so many different people (and is usually done purely by rote to) over the years. The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" is the only song here that actually keeps some of the orginal music intact, just accentuating the drums and adding more horns. On the other side of the coin "Dancing Machine" is presented drastically reworked into a frantic dance-salsa tempo.Only Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through The Grape Vine" has any trace of a typical house oriented remix but it's done in such as different way one won't even notice. On the most interesing note Smokey's "Being With You" is presented in a spanish language version called "Aqui Con Tigo",which I have never heard before, adding to the latin and hispanic theme of these remixes. That flavor gives these remixes the party atmosphere that permeated classic Motown and actually goes with the feeling of these songs very well. For any fan or Motown, especially one also interested in latin rhythms,or anyone interested in great songs done in a great way this collection will definately brighten your day.
Motown Remixed Vol. 2: 'Latin' Mixes.......2007-05-23
Since some of my most beloved Motown tracks are featured on the album, so I snapped this album up immediately. What I like about the Motown Remixed series is that the mixes are (for the most part) very respectful of the originals. The songs are changed up quite a bit, but the original structure and melody is not too far away. Whether or not the Latin sound is your sound, there are still enough bright spots on this album to make it worthy of a listen.
Highlights:
'Shotgun' really benefits from the Latin treatment, which smoothly integrates the sax and organ of the original with a Latin steel drum beat. The addition of the Latin flavor to the Motown sound also works well for 'Dancing Machine'. The new mix really swings with an added brass arrangement. The best parts of the song (Michael's first verses, the instrumental breakdown) are drawn out and repeated (the instrumental breakdown has a really Latin flavor, who knew?) and the instrumental build-up behind Jermaine's lines is an excellent touch. The Andres Levin mix of 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine' is the crowning glory of the album. Marvin's vocals are front and center, as they should be, and they are perfectly complemented by the mix, which features a piano track. It's absolute alchemy! It reminds me of the genius of a Freemasons remix. Another solid track is the mix of the Spanish-language version of 'Being With You'. The trademark saxophone of the original is omitted, but Smokey's always-brilliant vocals are placed over layers of bongos and strings, creating a slightly more (just slightly, though) uptempo sound than the original.
Lowlights:
The 'The Boss' mix is dreadful...the mix strips the original instrumentation and is very salsa/tango music with a hint of reggae, which is fine, but paired with Diana's vocals all the drama of the song is zapped. And if you've heard 'The Boss,' it is ALL ABOUT the drama. All that is lost in this mix, unfortunately. There's something about the key of the original vocals and the key of new mix that doesn't match well at all. Not to mention that her vocals are too muddled. A bit of a disaster. Both the David Elizondo mixes (of 'Heat Wave' and 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone') have a reggae sound as well, and I'm not a huge fan of reggae so naturally I'm a bit predisposed against them. It works much better for 'Heat Wave,' but neither track is one I plan on listening to again.
In the middle:
The SPK mix of 'I Want You Back' is very subtle, to the point where I might have to take a minute before realizing it's a mix. If I want to hear the original, I've already got it. The mix of 'I Can't Get Next To You' is subtle but slightly less so...it attempts to add drama with an extra drumbeat and a rock guitar sound, and the breakdown is mixed. But the original already had drama with the frantic passing around of the vocals, and the original beat complemented it perfectly. This mix seems to be a bit overkill. The 'Square Biz' mix is very calypso flavored and fun, but Teena Marie's vocals are slightly overpowered by the instrumental track. And the original 'Don't Look Any Further' has a bit of a Latin/reggae feel, which ironically is stripped a bit for the new mix. A folky-Latin guitar arrangement is added, and it has a bit more of a downtempo sound. I prefer the original but this version is quality (it would have been much more fitting on the first Motown Remixed album).
So, 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4) for a solid remix album. Regarding the series in general, I do wish that instead of themes, the Motown Remixed series would focus on compiling the best Motown remixes out there, regardless of style. And I wish the series would come out more often than once every two years! Remixes of Motown tracks are constantly hitting the clubs, so there's no shortage of material.

Venezuela's resident musical maniacs and former Latin Grammy nominees are back with covers of seventeen tunes they knew and loved during their teen years, a few of which, such as "Miss Venezuela," complete with samples of a simpering beauty queen, actually sound strangely familiar. Their rampant satirical stance and penchant for studio wizardry still firmly in place, they wallow in neo-nostalgia, running amok in Caracas Oldieville, abetted by producer DJ Dimitri of Paris and their own polymorphous tendencies. Nods to Isaac Hayes, Nigerian superstar Fela Kuti, sixties bossa nova as sanitized via the American west coast, P-Funk, Santana, and even The Fifth Dimension do a crazed buck-and-wing around hip-hop, lounge and latter-day dance club machinations. The contexts shift so rapidly that if the listener weren't so busy boogying, vertigo might well set in. By the third track, the flagrantly over-ripe, increasingly bizarre sets of cross-pollinations begin to seem almost normal, as a kind of sonic Stockholm Syndrome sets in. Going with the flow becomes not only a matter of self-preservation, but a hilarious, booty-shaking journey into the group's seductive, endlessly inventive brand of lunatic genius. --Christina Roden

Amigos Invisibles at their best.......2007-04-13
Awesome music, great mixes, and wonderful and funny tunes.... This CD brings their talent !!! Highly recommended along with Arepa 3000: A Venezuelan Journey Into Space
Superb cover tune offering.......2007-03-06
Like a fine wine or cognac, Los Amigos Invisibles only get better with age. With "Super Pop Venezuela," the sextet take a break from their own musical acumen to produce a disc that covers a gamut of Venezuelan melodies. Of course, though, LAI give the assembled harmonies their own unique magnetism. Thanks largely to the euphonious [writing] talents of guitarist José Luís Pardo (aka "Cheo"), "Super Pop"'s offerings are likely to satisfy anyone who enjoys the genre in which LAI subsists. And that's because, even though these songs are not LAI's own, they *make* them their own by injecting into them their own extraordinary character.
My personal favorites are "No Es Fácil Amar a Una Mujer," "Yo No Sé," "Curda y Pan" and most especially "Yo Soy Así." Keep in mind, too, that as with past LAI discs, not all the tunes have vocals -- which, in LAI's case, really makes not a difference as their musical proficiency is off the scale!
Even a casual fan of Los Amigos *has* to see them live at least once in his/her life. It is a truly remarkable event.
The Very Best of LAI........2007-01-13
I was living in Venezuela in the 80's, when these songs were first time published, and I can't stop remembering how many woderful things happened to me when I was listening to this music. These is so far, the very best CD released by the LAI, and among other latin bands, LAI is simply the very best of all them. I'd give more stars for this Cd, if they were available. By the way, listen to them alive is another glorious experience. I strongly recommend these guys.
Finally something different and good........2006-12-06
I LOVE this album! It is so much fun! It's got a killer mix of styles that showcase what Los Amigos Invisibles do best. They create a great dance party with some Disco, Salsa, Funk, House and other styles too. Dmitiri from Paris gave it a really nice vibe as the producer. There are songs to chill out to, songs to laugh to and most of all songs to dance to. This album will definitely put a smile on your face. I have a two hour drive to work and can honestly say that I can listen to this album from beginning to end and not get bored. Definately worth every penny and have bought some copies for friends and family as stocking stuffers this x-mas. Enjoy.
pales compared to the last 3 albums.......2006-09-25
Let's be candid, this album is not as well-produced or infectious as the prior 3 Los Amigos Invisibles albums. I love these guys to death, I'm not trying to be negative. But I find myself having no urge to re-listen to "Superpop Venezuela", whereas I always loved to revisit the Luaka Bop releases. Los Amigos Invisibles are an incredible live act, so perhaps this new material is better in concert.
If you're looking for a new act that has some of the same inspiration and creativity as prior Los Amigos Invisibles releases, you could do well by picking up The Pinker Tones debut "The Million Colour Revolution." They are from Barcelona and have a lot of the same good vibes LAI once had.

This 16-track compilation demonstrates a sense of humor--or an awareness of its own cheese factor--by sandwiching "Lambada" between the Gipsy Kings' "Bamboleo" and the Bayside Boys remix of Los Del Rio's "Macarena." The spirit of fun keeps this otherwise hopelessly diffuse set from falling apart while dancing between the flamenco guitars of Carlinhos Brown's "A Namorada," a house remix of "Oye Como Va," and Quincy Jones's Austin Powers fave "Soul Bossa Nova." Those willing to let go will have hit the dance floor long before Beck ends the bash with "Burro," his suavecito mariachi version of "Jack-Ass." --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Good spread of popular Latin songs.......2005-09-01
If you're one of those Latin song buffs, you might want to check this album out. It has a wide spread of Latin songs ranging from "La Bamba" to "Mas Que Nada". A good mix of ever popular songs and forgotten one.
First Nine Songs Are Cool, Rest Are Boring.......2003-07-31
I'm pretty happy with this CD. I think the first nine songs are pretty cool and enjoy dancing to most of them. These first nine tracks have very upbeat rythms. However, the rest of the songs are older and more boring. Perhaps it's just because I'm young, but I find myself skipping through those last several tracks. To be honest, if the last 7 tracks weren't as boring, I'd give this CD a higher rating.
I think it's cool that this CD has the Austin Powers theme song (track 9, "Soula Bossa Nova") on it. Yeah baby!
Don't be sucked in by the title!.......2002-12-02
This is not a PARTY album. That would be a collection of songs that make people want to feel festive, get up and dance, or otherwise celebrate. What this album is is a collection of popular to semi popular to rarely heard of "latin" tunes. Very few will make you want to get up and dance, or party much at all. Although there are some decent artists mixed in, the album, taken as a whole, is a yawn. This is not the "best party album in the world, ever", not even a FAIR party album. There's WAY better music out there for a party!
Fun stuff..........2002-03-08
I originally bought the CD for Beck's "Burro," which is the Mariachi version of "Jackass." The track is excellent... it's worth the price of the entire CD. The rest of the tunes are just an added bonus (except the annoying "Hot, Hot, Hot"). The CD is perfect for spicing up any party, whether on the dance floor, or simply as background music.
altered art=kaka.......2001-10-15
The changes to the original artists' work on this album cause significant loss to the music quality. What a disappointment!

With his brassy sound, Arturo Sandoval is a glorious throwback to a tradition of big-band trumpeters who cast their voices over pumping horn sections, from Swing Era greats like Bunny Berigan and Harry James to bop players such as Dizzy Gillespie and high-note specialist Maynard Ferguson. Sandoval is most adept when he's fusing the rhythmic vitality of his Cuban heritage with the complexities of bebop, invoking the spirit of Gillespie's pioneering 1947 big-band efforts. It's in sharpest relief on the masterful take of Tadd Dameron's bop classic "Hot House," but the rhythms are churning and the brass are wailing elsewhere as well, as "Sandunga" and "Tito," named for the presence of timbales great Tito Puente. --Stuart Broomer

Hes Blazing.......2005-12-16
No doubt about it HOT HOUSE is an extraordinary album Arturo Sandoval blazed through his solos along with Michael Brecker with great taste. This is a "must have" album!
Sandoval's Awesome "House".......2004-12-27
If you're a fan of Latin jazz, 'Hot House' is the real deal. It opens with a bang (literally) courtesy of the sizzling "Funky Cha-Cha," a sexy, stylish night-on-the-town chart with a delicious guest tenor solo by Michael Brecker. (Brecker also plays on the title track.) Ed Calle plays tenor on two tracks as well, the jamming "Sandunga" and "Closely Dancing," a breathtaking bolero with a clever twist--Rene Toledo's surprising and intoxicating electric guitar solo.
"Rhythm of Our World" is something truly special. Richard Eddy's powerful, evocative arrangement plays the same trumpet theme over multiple Latin styles, weaving it through rich orchestrations in varying rhythms and time signatures, with Sandoval taking a tasty solo during the samba movement. "Rhythm" is reminiscent of Sandoval's terrific "A Mis Abuelos" on his 'Danzon' CD, but is no carbon copy. It's an unforgettable piece of music.
There are more guest musicans on the CD, including the late Tito Puente (who shows up the final track and, of course, "Tito"), and the underrated Patti Austin on "No Se Tu."
Definitely deserving of the Grammy it won!.......2003-12-18
Arturo was spot-on with this album, and also made it appeal to the commercial public as well, because he is such an exciting player. Fans of Latin jazz be it if they're a fan of the style or not will really love this album. Arturo plays great, and has some amazing guests featured here as well. Most notably, one of my favorite tenor saxophonists, a former Maynard Ferguson bandmember, Chip McNeill! This guy plays amazingly well and definitely deserved a spot on this gem. "Funky Cha Cha" is the perfect opener, just comes right in blasting. Here Michael Brecker guests on tenor saxophone and plays some good stuff, and Arturo plays an exciting solo full of his usual bebop-flavored flurries. "Rhythm Of Our World" has a brilliantly played slow introduction from Arturo, and then segways into a faster pace. This song really swings and has a lot of soul. It pays tribute to all styles of Latino music! "Hot House" is a famous composition by Tadd Dameron and Arturo and company really bring it to life in this masterful take with some wonderful solos. The band is very tight as well. Arturo plays his own lead trumpet amazingly. "No Se Tu" is a tasty vocal feature for Patti Austin with great playing from Arturo as well. Patti really put a lot into this song, and it shows. Very romantic and sweet. "Sandunga" is a firey piece that really gives the opportunity for the soloists to rip it. The song is dedicated to all the girls who can really dance. "Tito" is a tribute to Rican music king Tito Puente, and Tito himself is featured on this song. Fans of Tito will really love this. Arturo did a great thing by making this song. "Closely Dancing" is a slower, more romantic song which really comes to life. Arturo plays it very passionately. My favorite track on the set is "Mam-Bop"! Most will probably agree. The tune is just insane. From Arturo screeching Double High D's throughout and trading with himself, taking it up an octave then back down then back up. However, my favorite part is the end, where they quote a bunch of bebop tunes, including "Salt Peanuts"! I also noticed "Straight, No Chaser" and "Good Bait" (which is also a composition by Tadd Dameron, co-written by Count Basie). The others were familiar but I could not think of them off the top of my head. "New Images" is a brilliant ballad with Arturo really showing off his control in the upper register, ending his emotional solo on an E over Double C. This song is a bit like "Closely Dancing", they are actually similar. "Cuban American Medley" is a great, fun tune. They play American songs such as "Going Back Home To Indiana", "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" and "Little Lulu Theme" in a Latin setting. This medley is a lot of fun. The last piece, "Brassman's Holiday", is an entertaining feature for trumpet, and has a joyous, almost Christmas-like feel to it.
This is a great album. It is great to know that this kind of music is finally getting the recognition it deserves.
HOT LATIN JAZZ WORTH 10 STARS **********.......2002-02-25
I own several Jazz and Latin Jazz albums and this one deserves to be in the top 5 in both categories; Arturo es simply FABULOSO, his style, performance, technique, everything is as great as it gets, he is a hyper-genius and shows it in every song; the highlights are Funky Cha Cha Cha, Rythm of our World (that tributes Latin and Brazilian Jazz concepts blended perfectly), No se tu (with a superb vocals by Patti Austin), Sandunga (perhaps the best cut in the album), and Mam-Bop. Do not let this gem pass you by, You will never regret adding this piece of art in your gallery.

This album is right on target. It's a great blend of jazz and Latin music. We're wearing out this CD!!!!!! If you only have one Arturo Sandoval album, make it this one.

Customer Reviews:
House Perfection: Defected's Very Best .......2006-12-22
I bought this Soulfuric set in Fall of 2004 and have not stopped listening to it. It is a fantastic reminder that genuine garage house is not extinct. I've got 7 or 8 of the "In The House" series (MAW, DJ Gregory, Dimitri, Joey Negro, Miguel Migs, Sandy Rivera, etc.) and another 4 or 5 of the "Soul Heaven Presents" (Blaze, DJ Spen, MAW, Dennis Ferrer, etc.). Soulfuric's 'In The House' is by far the HOTTEST of all of the Defected mix compilations released to date. It is seamless, intoxicating house perfection from start to finish. Highlights include the opening -- with the acapella of First Choice's "Love And Happiness" leading right into "Back Together" by Ron Carroll (a refreshing slice of Chicago-style house, reminiscent of Ten City/Byron Stingily); as well as the meshing of Roland Clark's "Resist" with Urban Blues Project's "We Are One". By the time I got to the CD2 pairing of Audiowhores "Nekoosha" with "The DJ's Calling Me", I thought my head was going to blow off -- it's that hot! Some great soulful diva vocals on CD2, Kathy Brown rocks "Give It Up" and the legendary Jocelyn Brown throws down on "Hold Me Up". This set will get any party started, get it while you still can.
P.S. If you can find the 3CD out-of-print UK edition, it's worth it. The 3rd CD has unmixed versions of Soulsearcher w/ Donna Allen's "Feelin' Love" and DJ John Julius Knight's epic "Find A Friend" (which samples Sylvester's "Over And Over" to marvelous effect) among other treasures.
Jazzy House Lounge CD for the masses.......2006-11-19
As a DJ with over 16 years of experience I must say that this is one of the best compilations/mixes of this genre of music. It is an enjoyable mix of lyrical, jazzy, loungy magic that just makes you want to dance. If you enjoy jazz and are trying to ge into house this is the one for you. If you want to have an idea of what club music used to be like BEFORE trance came along, this is the CD for you. If you are having a get together and want something nice and jumpy on the background while you enjoy a nice couple of bottles of wine and that won't drive you insane this is the ONE FOR YOU.

Soulicious.......2006-01-05
These guys have definately impressed the house music scene all over the world. With there flawless mixing to well produced jazzy, tangy, sexy house, The Soulfuric team has introduced themselves as the deep funky house pioneers on Defected! Both cd's have excellent track selections from artist such as MAW, Cerrone, Roland Clark, Copyright and much more! This series is a must have from the in the house collection
PUT IT ON AND LET IT PLAY!!!!!.......2005-04-13
Here is one of the very reasons to buy a CD this expensive! This one is definately worth the price of admission to this banging, slamming almost heart shattering club experience. There is no reason to stop listening to these driving beats other than to catch your breath. These two DJ's really put it down with their jazzy, latin and african mixed beats. A must have for any house collection.
With CD's like this, who needs to go to a club? But there are only 2 in this package
Leave your "skip track" button behind.......2005-02-14
I have to agree with all of the reviews on here, this mix is hot. It's great for: running through mountain trails, driving to work, pre & post funkin, lifting weights, and writing reviews on here (I'm listening to it as I type). I haven't decided which disc is my favorite, and maybe I really don't have to. It's nice to have music to put on that you don't have to skip around to find the few treasured songs. My favs are definitely "resist" from disc 1 (the beats melt you) and solymos/i get deep & the light from disc 2. Tons of lush vocals, but also good spoken word, latin instrumentation, and some pure deep house.

usually spm is really tight, this album is no exception, although it is not really upto the standard of "never change" it still has some classic tracks, unfortunatly, the album features too many other rappers and SPM does not really do that many. on the other hand, i would still buy it. I really loved miss perfect its quite moving, but also he keeps it rough with the other tracks. nice contrast.

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Virginia Rodrigues's sophomore album, Nos, is the sort of session that sends chills up the spine--and a warm gust straight to the soul. Her version of Bahian music employs the Brazilian region's percussive traditions in almost subterranean ways so that her voice can soar across the top of the rhythms. There's a mysticism and spiritual core to Nos that's of course connected deeply to Bahian traditions but has global relevance. --Andrew Bartlett
Amazon.com
The Bahian region of Brazil has sent the world some invaluable music, much of it expressed to the widest audience through artists who aren't native to the region. So the drummers of Olodum propel Paul Simon's Rhythm of the Saints and deeply inspire Caetano Veloso and untold other Brazilian artists. Virginia Rodrigues, though, is the quintessence of the region's aesthetic pricelessness. Her Sol Negro won global accolades, and its follow-up, Nós, is an even more precious gem. Rodrigues melds Bahian rhythmic aesthetics and a pop feel that ranges from evening-gown jazz hybrids (with choral background vocals!) to sheer displays of her broad-winged midrange vocalizations. Produced by Veloso, Nós opens with a song for the African deity Exú and invokes periodic ritual energies, swirling languidly through Rodrigues's vocals and finding refractions in the layers of pristine production beneath each song's surface. It's a rare find, something this special. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2007-04-24
AMAZING is the only word that I can use to describe how wonderful Viriginia Rodrigues' voice is. I first heard her in the closing credits in a wonderful movie, Le Chiavi di Casa. This movie is another must. Virginia Rodigues now has a fan for life!
The Question.......2007-02-12
Has anyone considered that maybe she doesn't "want" to swing? I hate to break it to some people out there, but there are other types of music than jazz. I love jazz, but this is a wonderful singer from brazil, not some arrogant jazz diva. She doesn't swing huh? Well she also doesn't yodel, can you imagine that, SHE DOESN'T YODEL? Same problem as her first cd, no yodeling. And there are no fat electronic breaks either. Man, this cd is just no good. Anyways, enough sarcasm. Her voice is amazing, and if you are branching out into world music and want to hear some interesting arrangements and a unique singer, then I recommend this cd. If you want swing go get some Miles Davis. If you just happen to be open enough for non-swing music (imagine that) then this is a good cd. I'm pretty sure Mozart didn't swing either. Is it to his discredit?
Truly Unique Experience.......2007-01-16
I first heard Virginia's voice, although I didn't know who it was, over the closing credits of a phenomenal Italian film called "A Key to His House". Without knowing any better, I thought the person singing was a man, with an extraordinarily buttery tone.
I had to know who it was.
After a trip to IMDB and its message board, I found out the vocalist was Virginia Rodrigues. Thanks to everyone for helping connect the dots! (And you should all see this movie.) The track over the closing credits is "10-11: Deus do Fogo e da Justica".
"Nos" is unique in that Virginia's telling stories -- rich pieces of history. So thanks to the producers for including the lyrics in English. Tops on this side is track #2, "Uma Historia de Ifa," -- achingly beautiful and a poetic tribute to a long-lost civilization.
If you've always been partial to the mezzo-soprano or contralto qualities of the female voice; i.e., tones you can wrap around yourself like a warm blanket, then you'll be in 7th heaven with Virginia's style. And if you're a fan of other unique female voices like Lisa Gerrard and Mary Fahl, you'll want to have Virginia in your collection.
Open yourself and give yourself a treat - TRY IT!.......2006-08-15
There seems to be some kind of misunderstanding with the people who don't like this cd. Of course you can not like it, hm, let's not be obtuse, but all criticisms, or most of them, seem to be directed to what it SHOULD be rather with what it is. I mean, I don't know if it is deeply brazilian - it definately isn't cliche tourist music. But then again, I don't care. It is beautiful, who cares if it is labeled as punk, classic or new age, (and world is such a funny definition created by some gringo - it's like world really is the biggest classification: everything else!) and who cares if it is brazilian, burundian or russian. I love it, and it really made me whisper "she's a goddess..." whilst I had chills all around my body. Look, at least, try her. This is maybe one of the few records in the world I would probably recommend to try at least - that I don't know who can (not) like it.
It's got a great vibe, so enjoy.
Cheers & Love
beautiful beyond compare and classification.......2003-12-02
This is the first Virginia Rodrigues CD I bought (sight unseen so to speak after hearing her voice described on NPR). Now I have all three, but this is my favorite. Her music is hard to classify (or locate regionally), it is truly world music, or more like out of this world music as it seems both out of time and place. (When I first heard it I found myself daydreaming vague old childhood memories of pastoral scenes....)
This is spiritual music in that it is uplifting, simple, pure, sensual but not sexual. Virginia's voice is lovely, broad ranged, rich, warm, soothing. The music fits her sound beautifully. There is no fluff here, no frills or clashing egos. The accompanying strings are emotive without being sappy. The odd (to me at least) Brazilian instruments are a perfect touch and complement to the more classical orchestrated and operatic sound she creates. Often when listening I'm reminded of Sally Oldfield (similar operatic style), but Virginia is more rich, warm and deep.
This is truely sublime music. And achingly beautiful.

Album Description
"[Los Amigos Invisibles] has taken the rhythmic sass in salsa, the bass-heavy fun in funk, and even the note-bending bile in acid-jazz, and mixed it all up to produce an infectious beat. [They] have put the joy back into dancing, sending a warm current into the cold alienating waters of industrial strength techno." - LA Weekly
"We're a dance band," says Jose Luis Pardo, the guitarist for Los Amigos Invisibles. Tuned into groove culture from Detroit to London to Tokyo -- thanks to the Internet and a busy tour schedule -- the Amigos began work on their new album AREPA 3000: A VENEZUELAN JOURNEY INTO SPACE with a disco sensibility. Admiring French DJ/producers the band sought a heavier house sound in contrast to the retro and lounge elements of THE NEW SOUND OF THE VENEZUELAN GOZADERA. "The lounge thing sounds more Japanese," says Jose Luis. "The house sound is fresher, the disco songs we do sound more like that. The album is more electronic in certain ways."
Since their ground-breaking US debut the Amigos have lived a double life. In their hometown of Caracas, Venezuela, they've hosted underground club nights for years (the most recent called 'Super Sancocho Variety'). Then, insouciant single-entendre songs like "Sexy" and the doggy-style anthem "Ponerte En Cuatro" landed them on MTV and radio, and before long, the six young men found themselves pop idols. It wasn't hard, but their hearts remain on the dance floor and in the clubs.
Customer Reviews:
The perfect blend of funk, salsa and a great sense of humor.......2007-07-13
Arepa is the name of a food that serves as a substitute of bread in Venezuela. Arepa 3000 is the third release of the Venezuelan super-band Los Amigos Invisibles.
Los Amigos, which had already scored big time with their previous two albums (the second of which was already recorded under Luaka Bop, David Byrne's label), did it again, but spicing up their "musica sabrosa" with a great sense of humor. Although it will be even funnier to people originally from Venezuela, you'll love the sections of people (famous comedians, horse race narrators and radio talk show hosts) speaking between songs. Specially contagious are the very tropical "Mami Te Extrano" (Honey, I miss you) and "Llegaste Tarde" (You arrived late).
Still, seven years after its original release, the album retains all its flavor and fun, much like all their other works, kicking aside language barriers. With Los Amigos Invisibles, you CAN'T go wrong: from their first work, A Typical Autoctonal Venezuelan Dance Band to their 2006 release, Superpop Venezuela, they've managed to combine music and fun in a way few other bands anywhere else can. Compralo y gozalo! (Buy it and enjoy it)
Disclaimer: Unless you get easily offended by sexually-suggestive song titles or explicit lyrics, there's no way on earth you'll dislike Amigos Invisible's first 21st century musical creation: Arepa 3000.
Good Music.......2007-05-13
If you like the latin beat and instruments this is a good choice, smooth and sexy.
Not What I Expected.......2006-08-10
I expected the CD to be better than it actually was. I first heard cuchi-cuchi and i loved the song, so i thought the other songs on the CD would be energetic like that one. It wasn't a bad CD though. I'd say 40% of the songs were worth listening to.
Nice music.......2006-07-24
