The band's fourth & fifth albums, recorded in 1975 and 1976 respectively, and originally on the Polydor record label, Dog Days and Red Tape are now appearing for the first time as a 2 on 1 CD. Dog Days was the band's first true masterpiece - an album that still stands as one of their best. The band were beginning to display a growing array of musical styles and approaches very different to where the rest of Southern Rock was headed. With Red Tape - another early classic and a much in demand title from fans - featured a harder rock approach with predominantly shorter pop-length songs. Gott Records. 2005.

These two albums from ARS prove that they were the best of the Southern Rock bands of the Seventies. It is a shame that they never got the recognition they so truly deserve.

Serious guitar picken from one of Southern Rocks best.......2006-11-19

This two album CD features outstanding material from one of Southern Rocks best bands. Atlanta Rythm Section was a great band because of their line up of highly sought after and very accomplished studio musicians. Lead singer Ronnie Hammond delivers his signiture high quality vocals on these well written tunes and he has one of the best pure voices from the south. Lets face it though. Why do most peaople enjoy Southern Rock? Its the guitars baby and thats where these guys shine. The guitar duo of Barry Baily and J.R. Cobb are not easily beat by any band. Every song on these offerings is full of the serious "Southern Picken" guitar that made this Rock genre famous. These albums should be in the collection of any fan of Rock guitar.

An excellant reissue! Tons of great songs. The Atlanta Rhythm Section was at their peak with Red Tape. You can't go wrong with this 2 album CD.

One of their best. Will not be disappointed for sure. Ronnie's voice is sultry and smooth. I like that they have combined two awesome cd's into one pleasing cd. This cd is a must for any fan. What i liked about it, was that all of the songs had a different feel to it. It had fast, get you moving songs but then it had sensual, soft melodies as well. I love it!

If the ABB was the band of the new south and it's hopes and dreams and Skynyrd was Bubba's band, the Atlanta Rhythm Section was the thinking mans Southern band. Albums full of smart tunes, an eye for detail and killer musicianship, these guys have been the most underrated southern band since their first days.

These two albums were pivotal in the bands development. Dog Days reflected the south they lived, in the musical forms they loved and the bands joy at making music. Songs such as the title tune, Boogie Smoogie Cuban Crisis and Crazy are just blinders and All Night Rain has been one of my favorite rainy night romance songs for 30 years.

Red tape opens with Jukin' which interpolates Bob Wills San Antonio Rose into the solo. Mixed Emotions musically points toward the success of the next record's So Into You, Free Spirit examines relationships in context of social change and Another Man's Woman just ought to be illegal its so good.

These CD's have been unavailable for a long time so get them before they go away again.

I am a BR5-49 aficionado from the early days at Robert's when the band played for tips and usually played requests until 2am with little or no breaks. Admittedly, I long for those days as much as I long for stirrups in Major League Baseball. So I'm nostalgic, "IT'S A FREE COUNTRY." It is also legal for a band to evolve and morph in any which way it feels. Yet, whenever I read a review in some fishwrap publication that states that a band has "matured," I can do nothing but cringe. Here's the flowchart: Band starts out - Band plays hard - Band gets cult following - Band gets reputation - Band strikes out on road - Band gets contract - Band gets a little more pub. - Band gets contract with bigger label - Band gets new management supplied by label - Band gets "coached" in next recording - Band changes faces along the way - Band changes label again - Band gets new direction from new label - Band fights for identity - Band produces new "mature" album - Band gets lost as cult finds new local acts beginning this process.
Gee, I sure hope this isn't how the end of BR5-49 comes about, but enough of the doom and gloom of impending implosion. This record is OK. Of course, I realize that any band can't just re-hash the same 'ol stuff on every album, but part of what got these guys so much early attention was the raw exhuberance they displayed both live and on the vinyl. One part of this was their ability to do cover songs usually better than the originals, and a simple taste of this is what I sorely miss in the last few recordings. This band live used to be a wild, jittery, moving organism on stage, and although they are still a solid live show (saw them on the last tour at Poor David's Pub in Dallas), something has settled down. Chuck is a great talent, but an early appeal of the band was the vocal volley of Chuck and Gary Bennett. Ok, I'll go cry me a river, but dammit, just go listen to the Big Backyard Beat Show one more time. Mature? I just don't want to grow up that bad.

Just Buy It!!!.......2006-10-04

With the possible exceptions of Dave Alvin from the Blasters and Gary Louris from the Jayhawks, Chuck Mead could be the most under-appreciated songsmith/artist of our generation. To try and classify this band as anything other than authentic American music that seemlessly blends Blues, Gospel, Hillbilly Rock, Classic Country (not the ultra-commercial "formula music" Nashvilles spews forth today) and Jazz would be a waste of time. The melodies are catchy, the lyrics are strong and often humorous, the vocal harmonies are expertly executed and the musicianship is way above average at every position.
It is difficult to say that this new CD is "better" than Tangled in the Pines (also quite excellent!!) but it is absolutely as good and seems to demonstrate a maturation of sorts, especially in the crafting of the songs. The bottom line is, just buy it and you will like it if you like real uncontrived music. You will be supporting an American musical treasure and hopefully help to avoid what happened to the Jayhawks. They put out 5 remarkable CD's including the last incredible CD, Rainy Day Music, which I think stunned even them when it did not sell, and now they are disbanded. That is a heartbreaker so let's not let it happen again!!!
As a final note it should be stated that the CD entiled "This Is BR549" is the only thing they have put out that is not worth buying. Their label evidently thought it would be a good idea to try and fit a square peg into a round hole and make these guys a contrived, modern, formula country act which would be like asking Lucinda Williams to be the next Faith Hill. Suffice to say it did not work even though the CD did have a few good songs in spite of it all!! I highly recommend everything else they have released, especially the studio releases. Why not buy them all?!?!?!

In most CD reviews, the reviewer will compare the music to that of another similar, better known band. They have the bluegrass sound of earlier bands but the music is crisper and sounds newer. You might be tempted to say this band has some of the vocal harmonies of Little Big Town or Rascal Flatts, but that really doesn't describe their sound. The songs aren't sad or maudlin, they are all cleaver and catchy. It's clear that BR549 is really not like any of them. They have their own distinct sound and it comes out loud and beautiful in their new CD, Dog Days.

This is not a new band. In fact, the band started in the mid-90s. They have endured band member changes, theft of their equipment and even disbanded for a while. Still, they came up with 3 Grammy nominations and had successful tours with varying artists including Faith Hill and Tim McGraw and the Black Crowes.

BR-549 seems to finally be settling down with this new CD. They are now a 4-piece group (originally they were 5) with Chuck Mead, vocals/guitar, Don Herron, multiple instruments, Shaw Wilson, drummer/vocals and new member Mark Miller, bass/vocals. The new songs are a combination of rhythms and are a showcase for the group's writing talents as well as singing and playing abilities. They wrote or co-wrote 9 of the 11 songs on the album (Mead was primarily involved in the writing).

Many of the songs have a driving beat, none better than "Cajun Persuasion", a pounding mix of instruments and vocals and "Bottom of Priority" with its old-fashioned rock sound (the song is about the imprisonment of an innocent American Indian, Leonard Peltier.) "The Devil and Me" is a swinging gospel song, while "Let Jesus Make You Breakfast" is about a sneaker wearing Lord.

The song, "After the Hurricane," written before Katrina, seems to be pure country:

"After the hurricane
After the wind and rain
After we lost everything
After the hurricane,
We survived the rising tide
But there was no where we could hide."

OK, maybe "Dog Days" can be compared to the soundtrack album from the George Clooney movie, "Oh Brother," no, still not quite there. Guess this is one unique album that defies comparison. You just need to hear it!

As Good as Live..........2006-03-21

Without a doubt, any new-comer to BR549 will surely enjoy this release. I've followed and enjoyed the band for many years without ever seeing a live performance, until recently, and the show featured many of the songs on this cd. Chuck is a genuine talent, pure professionism on stage with that giddy-up mentality that gets these guys swingin'! The show was highlighted by Chris Scruggs, whose amazing talents crossed so many riffs and grooves, you didn't know when one solo ended and the other started. For waiting so long to see this band, it was well worth it. Thanks, boys!
Buy this cd! Don't hesitate to explore all the fantastic music this band has recorded, and please, for the love of god, don't pass up a chance to see these guys live, you'll love 'em!

I am a huge fan of alt-country, roots rock, Americana or whatever you wanna call it. This is a classic in the genre. Here are some lesser known albums in the genre that are fantastic.
1) End Of The Day by The Reivers

A great piece of work!!!!.......2004-09-08

This one is a little obscure and relatively unknown. If you have come this far and found this CD, and it is not in your collection....pick it up today. I have been listening to this for several months, and it gets steady rotation on my car radio.

I cannot think of who to compare BM to, they are a bare bones southern rock band. No frills here, but this type of music is getting very hard to find. Great songs, catchy lyrics. Blue Canoe starts out: "Ridin round the county, drinkin from a jar....Big blue canoe up on top of the car.".....come on, it don't get any better than that. This is a big slice of fun and no thinking required. Another line: "knoggin's gettin saggy and my spirits are draggin, got to take a ride in my blue-eyed wagon." You get the idea...there is not a bad track here.

Music is a matter of personal taste, and customer ratings should all be taken in stride. If any of you out there like this style of rock, I challenge you to purchase this CD and give it a listen. I would be surprised if you did not find this CD as enjoyable as I did. Check out Carey's solo efforts as well.

Ah...Welcome to Alt.Country at its Finest.......2002-01-25

I friend of mine handed me this album in high school and said, "You like that down-home stuff, so I think you'll love this." So here it is about seven years later and I'm still in love with Blue Mountain (although I'm very sad that they broke up). You can put this album on, close your eyes,and feel a nice warm Southern breeze bring a smile to your face as you sit in your rocking chair on the front porch. "Dog Days" breathes through your very soul with folky acoustic and raw electric guitars. "Mountain Girl" forces you to sway as you become a little misty, then "Let's Ride" takes you on a determined cruise downtown in search of trouble. "Dog Days" possesses a duality that's as close to real life as any album has ever come. A wonderful mix of bittersweet sadness and childhood memory, this album is a must for anyone who longs to hear something sincere. Cary Hudson and Laurie Stirratt are my down-home heroes. 'Nuff said.

Interesting Stuff Part II.......2002-01-22

In my search of Alternative Country/roots rock/Americana bands, I narrowed my search down to Blue Mountain. Man I have good research skills! I am as excited about finding this cd as I was when I discovered Blue Rodeo, Golden Smog, and Wilco for the first time many years ago... This is a fine cd of good songs that are well played and that make you want to listen to them again. This cd is growing on me....Go ahead, get your credit card out and buy it!

Soothing sounds of Led Zeppelin..........2005-03-01

Before I write my review, I thought you would like to know that I have not had a chance to listen to "Kashmir: The Symphonic Led Zeppelin". Keep that in mind if you are trying to decide between the two.

I think I would consider myself an average Led Zeppelin fan. I appreciate their music, and I listen to them every so often. I'm not one of the hardcore Zeppelin fans, so you might not appreciate this tribute as much as I do. I would have to say that this tribute is very well done, and a lot of time and effort was put into making it. The strings are pretty much in sync with the original songs, and just a few seconds into the song, you'll be able to tell what it is. I'm not going to go through a list of songs and tell you what I think of them, but I will say that I think the best one is "Ten Years Gone." This album - or albums, I should say - are great if you're looking for a soothing and relaxing version of some of the great Led Zeppelin songs. Though, I must say that you will only appreciate the tribute if you know the songs themselves, because if you don't then the song just might get repetetive. I'm a fan of the whole String Quartet Tribute thing, and I'd have to say that this is one of the best ones I've heard so far.

Not my cup of tea.......2003-11-18

For some reason this CD just sounded really corney to me. I was really dissapointed. Your opinion may differ but I would recommend that if you are looking for a classical Zeppelin CD you get Kashmir instead. It is cheaper and shines a new light on some awsome songs rather than butchering them.

Finally, Led Zeppelin Done Well in Strings........2003-02-20

A few of the selections are questionable for arrangment for a string section. I mean, Whole Lotta Love? Dazed and Confused? Give me a break. They could have replaced those poor choices with a number of other possibilities.

Nevertheless, it is the first attempt of it's kind, and the songs that are suitable are gorgeously performed.

Led Zeppelin's gifts for creating melodies and knowledge of music theory become more obvious in these classical performances.

Bonus Track on this EP is a MUST.......2007-07-22

I've Been a Soundgarden fan for many years. It's very difficult to pick a favorite song, but "Kyle Petty, Son of Richard" is one of the strongest B-Sides I have ever heard. It's as good or better than "Bleed Together" from the 'A-Sides' greatest hits compilation. It could have easily been included on 'Superunknown'.

If you like Soundgarden or Audioslave and haven't heard this song, this CD is worth the money.

Excellent acoustic blues on CD-R.......2006-03-21

Music is excellent, old time Piedmont blues. However, currently Amazon sells this album on CD-R (not factory pressed or `silver' CD), at least my copy arrived today is CD-R. It is known that CD-R lifetime could be significantly smaller than of factory pressed CDs (a CD-R can die within 5 years even if you choose not to play it at all). Get this, but be prepared that your copy could fail to play after few years.

Outstanding Piedmont Blues!!!.......2002-02-03

The acoustic Blues that spontaneously arose around the the turn of the century in rural America was an mixture of various influences. Folk, Country, Blues and various forms of ethnic musics blended in and out of each other weaving a beautiful tapestry of sound.

Cephas and Wiggins are an acoustic duo who are doing an amazing job of keeping traditional music alive. John Cephas does a great job of guitar playing and singing. Phil Wiggins sounds like he studied at the footsteps of the masters, providing perfect balance to Cephas' singing. Together the two blend effortlessly and any acoustic Blues enthusiast would be happy to have this cCD in their collection.

This CD contains eight songs, mostly standards. The originals sound like they were written during the 1920's, the covers are faithfully reproduced. I hope we hear a lot more from these two in the future.

Almost impossibly well-executed acoustic Piedmont blues.......1999-01-22

This release by the acclaimed Piedmont blues duo of "Bowling Green" John Cephas and "Harmonica" Phil Wiggins really put them on the map. Recorded entirely in the living room of Cephas's self-built house in rural Virginia, the selections on this album were all laid down in a single night, with no overdubs whatsoever. From the haunting dirge of Skip James' "Hard Time Killing Floor" to the rousing sing-a-long spirit of "Roberta," this release has graced my stereo well over a hundred times, and I never tire of it. "John Henry" is a favorite, the classic traditional given almost best-ever treatment, and "Stagger Lee" comes in close behind. Other recommended cuts are the title cut, "Reno Factory," and "Cherryball" -- also penned by James. Cephas, with his honey-cured baritone, has a singularly beatiful voice -- rich and expressive with lots of soul, and his guitar picking -- the distinctive thumb-and-forefinger picking of the Piedmont tradition, is heralded around the world. (Taylor guitars put him on the cover of their catalog in 1997.) Wiggins is an incredibly fleet and dextrous harmonica player, providing near perfect counterpoint to Cephas's playing and singing, and will leave many fellow harmonica players gasping at his weaves and runs. Still actively touring -- having been together since 1983 -- Cephas and Wiggins are just about to release "Homemade" on Alligator Records, which is sure to provide more of their always top-rack acoustic blues.

Ex-Blue Eyed Devils singer-guitarist Cotton pursued his muse from his Bay Area home to Clarksdale, Mississippi, for this solo debut. What he found in the Delta with some aid from producer Jimbo Mathus--who played guitar on Buddy Guy's last few albums and leads his own rockin' Knockdown Society--and guitar ace Big Jack Johnson was the inspiration to blend the essence of old-time string band music and pure country blues with his folk-inclined sound.

Cotton's not much of a storyteller, but his fleet picking style, delightfully raggedy vocal cords, and taste for flat-four rhythms propelled by loose-tuned snare drums create a juke joint party feel that makes for easy listening and serves covers of Skip James's "I'm So Glad" and John Hurt's "Louis Collins" well. The best cut is Cotton's own "Black Night," where his howlin' warnings about a cuckolded husband get slicing support from Johnson's thick fills and keening slide. And the album ends with the poignant wish "Goin' Back Home," where Mathus's slide resonator guitar helps brings Cotton's pining lyrics to life. --Ted Drozdowski

An aural portrait that owes a debt to Southern bluesmen and Americana pioneers alike, Chris Cotton's Yellow Dog Records debut sounds like a house party caught on tape - world-weary men effortlessly strumming their guitars and bass, while passing around a jug of whiskey for sustenance. The barrelhouse piano, is, of course, pushed up against one wall; Cotton's gravelly voice reigns over the debauchery. The scene is timeless - harkening back to days when the distinction between blues and country was hopelessly blurred.

Former Blue Eyed Devils frontman Cotton traveled to Clarksdale, MS to record I Watched the Devil Die at producer Jimbo Mathus' vintage-equipment studio, housed in the city's historic WROX radio building. Employing Memphis and Clarksdale sidemen including special guest Big Jack Johnson, Cotton and Mathus concocted a modern-day jam session with all the boisterous spirit of a classic down-home revival.

As one of the privileged folks to get an advance preview of the new album, I just want to say, f***ing awesome! This is easily Chris' best album to date. Black Night is an absolute masterpiece of live blues. Yet the album is also breaking out of the restrictions of 12 bars into uncharted territory. It's a new Chris, yet beatifuly blended with the best of the old Chris. Vocally he covers new ground as well, like the heartfelt and soul stirring IM SO GLAD. I feel an autobiographical flavor to the new songs like Morgan, Mississippi or in Come On, where he admits to never having killed a man. I love it!Kind of reminded me of a rapper admitting he's not in a gang but he can still flow. All in all, a pleasure to listen to from the first track to the last. Keep up the good work and see you at the cd release party

Authentic blues flavor.......2005-03-12

I Watched the Devil Die is a great down-and-dirty blues album. Whether you're a blues enthusiast or new to the genre, this is a must-have album. A mix of original songs and covers, Chris brings his own flavor to to the set. Chris plucks the guitar with so much intensity he breaks strings, while his voice captures pain, desperation, and longing with true authenticity. The recordings sound live, not heavily mixed, making the album feel like an authentic down-and-dirty gem from a true bluesman.

Which is my big ol' ham-fisted way of saying when it comes to Real Blues or what The Straight People (More Sugar!)call blues I ain't so sure I got my homework done enough to know what the heckfire i'm talkin' about. However in the spirit of MY Real Blues (and Mr.Cotton's) to hell with the damned stars and bring on the dancing bears!

I just finished listening to Chris Cotton's new CD titled I Watched The Devil Die. I'm awful sorry to say the best language I could come up with at the final note (without my usual swearing) was WOW! You'll be adding your own abundant and imaginative expletives after you hear it for your self. I'm at least honest enough to admit I know about enough about Piedmont style and other finger pickin' styles to keep my mouth half shut about Mr.Cotton's technical skill. On the other hand the fellow I work with is versed. His word as nail-hit-on-head upon listening was Exceptional! Most finger-pickin' sorts have sounded high-brow, tight and too pretty clean to my mud and woods tuned ears. Mr. Cotton despite his dangerous knowledge makes it roll out and around the ol' dirt road just as natural and rockin' as can be not forced faux and special. Mr. Cotton covers some of the masters works here. Mr. Willie McTell's Dyin'Crap Shooters Blues, The Mississippi Sheiks' That's it, and of course Mr's Hurt and James with Louis Collins and I'm So Glad. But this man's a fine songwriter too. Six of the twelve here are his and fit quite comfortably up against the old
timers. Each song sounds like it was played (not performed) at a late night pickin'party among good friends. The song Black Night sticks out for the help and heft of Mr. Big Jack Johnson's after-hours slide and as well for Mr. Cotton's xtra fine band's joyful playing on such a dark and menacing song. Mr. Jimbo Mathus' production here as usual brings you in to the room and sets you nicely in the hot seat front and center of the action goin' down live and naked and steamin' in the Mississippi midnite hour. I just gotta hope Yellow Dog Records P.R. Machine is fired up to overheatin' overdrive on this disc 'cuz if work this good isn't hailed in all the so called blues mags and beyond then sombody someplace ain't payin' attention.
Of course most folks don't Listen cuz they're too busy bein' dazzeled by the stars and wouldn't Hear great music if it was a dancing bear bitin' their ass.

Kati Szvorak and Teka take a folk tour of Hungary.......2002-12-24

This CD is a treasure trove of folk music from Hungary - NOT just children's songs. Great playing by Teka, vocals by Kati Szvorak. There are some vocals by non-adults, but are done well, not whiny or cutsey. Songs from practically every region of (greater)Hungary - Dunantul, Mezoseg, Moldva, Zobor - arranged in sections by "purpose" - wedding,Carnival, etc. For instance, in the dance section you get a great Dunantuli set. I originally purchased this because it has some Christmas songs on it. It also has a wonderful name-calling/taunting song - "S a te fejed akkora..." If you like Marta Sebestyen, Sebo, etc, you will like this CD. It's also a great introduction to Hungarian Folk music. Enjoy.
