Editorial Reviews
Product Description
1962's Dance, Sing & Listen marks Bruce Haack's debut as a children's composer. The first part of the Dance, Sing & Listen series, the album includes medieval, country, classical and pop styles in its embrace, interpreting the songs with a mix of electronic and acoustic instruments. 'Sunflowers' is an activity song in which children imagine they are sunflowers, from seed to bloom, behind Esther Nelson's instructions, Haack provides fizzy, bubbling keyboard effects, a vaguely African guitar line and bongos as accompaniment. Similarly, tracks like 'Eine Kleine Gebouncemusik' feature discussions between Nelson, Haack and the children they recorded the album with, resulting in a parallel-dimension version of Kids Say the Darndest Things. Dimension 5.

5 out of 5 stars Keep American Hi-5 Alive!.......2007-07-18

Discovery Communications, the company behind Discovery Kids and The Learning Channel, is prepared to stop producing any new "Hi-5" TV episodes. Instead, it seems that Discovery will continue to re-run the same episodes of "Hi-5," over and over again, for now and the foreseeable future. Hi-5 fans have been watching these same shows for up to 4 years, when the first "Hi-5" episodes debuted on American TV in 2003, and, frankly... we're tired of it!

It is urgent that we let Discovery and Kids Like Us (KLU), Hi-5's producers, know that we do NOT support their decision to stop producing new "Hi-5" episodes. Time is of the essence because if no new episodes are produced soon, there will be no reason for Discovery to keep our talented cast, Curtis, Jenn, Kimee, and newest members Sydney and Yasmeen. That's right -- there will be no more Hi-5 for TV, tours, appearances, charitable work, or anything else!

Information We Need to Emphasize to Discovery and KLU
*Hi-5 merchandise is currently one of the "Top 10 Brands" at Ty's Toy Box, a key internet retailer;
*The current "Hi-5 Live" tour has been filling up arenas across Canada and the U.S.;
*The $100 VIP packages for the tour have been completely selling out; and
*Hi-5 fans across Latin America are now eagerly requesting that Hi-5 will come to tour in their countries, too.

Hi-5 fans must let Discovery recognize that they will lose this entire revenue stream, as well as our support, patience, and goodwill, if they do not make new episodes to be televised within the next year.
We also need to let Discovery realize that the current 70 episodes, which are shown on 3-month cycles on TV, aren't enough to satisfy Hi-5's unique audience. Hi-5 fans include children, parents, teens, and young adults -- how many other TV shows can deliver that kind of fanbase? Hi-5 is a unique product and does not fit into the mold of a typical children's TV show, and we need to let Discovery know that before it's too late!

5 out of 5 stars Just for your kids.......2007-07-12

It was incredible to see my 2 year-old son jumping and singing with the music of this television band. He remembers the moves and part of the lyrics so every time I play this CD I can see a great smile in his face.
I really recommend this CD for your kids. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD!.......2007-07-06

My [...] daughter's favorite show is Hi-5, so I thought I would get this CD for when she's in my car. It's the best money I've ever spent on a CD! After I strap her in her car seat, I'll get in the front seat and she immediately says "uh-Hi" (her version of Hi-5). It's so cute that the other day I brought the video camera in the car to record her saying it and the booming smile that comes on her face when the 1st song (the Hi-5 theme) starts. I also recorded her when the song "Robot #1" starts, as she always says "robot". Since I enjoy the music as well, it's a win-win situation! After, the Hi-5 theme, there are 9 "song of the week" selections followed by several songlets from some of their skits. It's been such a big hit that I'm online today ordering a copy for my wife's car!

Picking a primary gripe about Disney's Move It is easy: In the post-Madagascar landscape of 2005, the infectious dance tune "I Like to Move It," first popularized by K.K. Project in 2002, is conspicuously, disappointingly absent. However, birthday-party booty-shakers will have forgotten their allegiance to K.K. Project's song; when Baha Men instruct them in their watered-down way to "Move It Like This." Standbys "Macarana," "U Can't Touch This," "Le Freak," "Kung Fu Fighting," and "I Got You (I Feel Good)" supply Mom ample cause to move it, too. --Tammy La Gorce

At a moment when mainstream music is clogged with a surfeit of stale, formulaic songs and huge egos, Dan Zanes has found the Drano. Family Dance, his second kids' record (after the fab Rocket Ship Beach), again comes through with big-name helpers--Sandra Bernhard, Rosanne Cash, and Loudon Wainwright III among them--but instead of assembling a mixed bag of self-important numbers, Zanes, who produced and plays on all but one of 15 tracks, maintains a cohesive vibe that's low-key and playful. Yet here's a disc that's all over the map, genre-wise. Gruffster Rankin' Don, a.k.a. Father Goose, rasta-raps his way through "The Hokey Pokey" and "Skip to My Lou," the Sandy Girls carry us off to a colorful Caribbean village for "Linstead Market," Cash folks up "Fooba Wooba John," and Leadbelly's "Rock Island Line" makes a stop in Memphis bluesland. Zanes's originals--"Jump Up," "Wonder Wheel," and "Thrift Shop," performed as a duet with Bernhard--manage to be wholesome, happy, and hip all at once, no mean feat. But it's the music making on Family Dance that impresses most of all. Fiddles, beatboxes, mandolins, tubas, banjos, and concertina elbow their way onto these tracks, and they're balanced by Zanes's arrangements and backup singer Barbara Brousal's graceful voice and guitar work. Kids 2 and up will be likewise captivated by the chunky board-book packaging, again with original artwork. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Two weeks..........2007-06-12

It took us two weeks to find out what our daughter was happily going around the house singing (3 at the time). And finally Sesame Street came on, and she said her song was on. It was 'Mailti' by Dan Zanes, and once that was
on my daughter just danced and sang away.

Since then we have embraced Dan's music into our family music circle. The lyrics are clean and catchy, and the rythm is simple enough for even a child to keep up with.

2 out of 5 stars Most tracks are ok, but the two by "Father Goose" are awful........2007-05-04

My son loves the music, but the singing by "Father Goose" is unbearably nasal and off-pitch on "Holey Pokey" and "Skip to My Lou".
Those two tracks make me cringe and I skip them every time my son plays the CD. However, several songs are wonderfully musical. For example, Linstead Market is just delightful.

5 out of 5 stars Let yourself go..........2007-04-14

T. Bittner from Peroria should read her review again.
"My kids seem to like it (the ones I don't hit the skip button for) but I am not going to sacrifice myself when there are plenty of other recordings that they and I both like."
If you don't want to 'sacrifice' once in a while and let your kids grow and find what they like, leave the room. A little fun and free expression is what childhood is all about! Sometimes it is about what they like. This is how they find out who THEY are.
Overall, my son likes the music. It is especially fun to waltz with him in my arms to 'Streets of New York'. Thanks to Dan Zanes, my son can find out it is fun to mix the old with the new.

2 out of 5 stars hard for Mom to tolerate.......2007-02-19

I love folk music, but this CD contains only 2 songs that I like and only 2 others that I can even tolerate. My kids seem to like it (the ones I don't hit the skip button for) but I am not going to sacrifice myself when there are plenty of other recordings that they and I both like.
Why don't I like it? Zanes has a croak similar to Bob Dylan's; with all due respect to Dylan's great songwriting, I don't enjoy his singing. Zane's friends vary in talent but none of them seem able to harmonize together. The songs in a minor key are particularly grating, such as "All Around the Kitchen" which many people seem to like, though I can't see why. The instrumentation is nothing special either. Don't buy this just because you like the song "Jump Up" from Sesame Street; you should listen before you buy to make sure the rest of it matches your taste.

5 out of 5 stars House Party and Family Dance.......2007-02-18

If you are looking for something different from the typical childrens music, this is it. My family has been addicted to Laurie Berkner since the summer and we needed something different. We are enjoying Dan Zanes so much. We find ourselves singing and dancing along in our kitchen and our van. This afternoon we were listening to Waltzing Matilda and my 4 year old daughter stopped playing and announced that her grandpa would love to dance to this song! We also love all the spanish that is mixed into the music. We like to try and guess what they are singing about. I am so glad we have added them to our collection.

From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15

Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the whole family.......2007-01-04

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.

5 out of 5 stars More Great Fun.......2006-03-13

Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

5 out of 5 stars One is better but this is still awesome!! Gotta have it!.......2006-01-10

My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolute joy, and endless fun!.......2005-11-15

The tunes and word stay with you and before you know it, you are signing them along. My two kids (ages 9 and 7) ask me to put the CD on as soon as we get into the car. What a wonderful and fun way to get them to love classical music!

Akon was just dropped by Verizon Wireless because of his outrageous lewd acts with a 14 year old, on stage and against her will - probably criminal. Thousands are canceling their Verizon Wireless. Stay away from Disney's endorsement of this polygimist, criminal. Disney needs to drop Akon fast.

4 out of 5 stars Squeaky Clean And Features Potential Stars.......2007-05-02

Radio Disney "Jams," vol. 8 is a nice compilation disc of kid-friendly (and edited when necessary) popular tunes. Unlike the sometimes wretched "Kidz Bop" discs, which feature rather annoying vocals instead of the original artists' work, "Jams" gives kids songs as performed by artists they know and love. From Jesse McCartney to Hilary Duff to Everlife, you may not have heard of some of these artists but your elementary school and tween-aged kids have. The disc opens with Aly and A.J. covering "Do You Believe In Magic." It's a very solid cover that actually reveals some solid talent on the part of these young ladies. Other artists featured primarily on either Radio Disney or the Disney Channel include Skye Sweetnam and the Cheetah Girls, who perform "Shake A Tail Feather," from the "Chicken Little" soundtrack. Everlife really shines on "Go Figure" and probably have the most potential to become future major stars in the pop industry. All of the tunes by youngsters on this disc are solid and infectious pop tunes. The only letdowns come via established artists such as Jesse McCartney and Rihanna. Their respective tunes fall flat in comparison to the rest of this disc.

A second disc featuring videos from Aly and A.J., Hilary Duff, Jesse McCartney, Skye Sweetnam, and the Cheetah Girls is also included. These are especially good to have around for young ones to try and copy dance moves and sing along with the songs.

Overall this is an unusually solid pop album that only falters when established popsters take the stage. It's perfectly edited (where needed) and parents need not worry about any questionable lyrics. It's even good enough to play when the kiddies aren't around. I recommend this album to anyone who has a child between the ages of five and fifteen or anybody who's a fan of Radio Disney.

4 out of 5 stars An age-appropriate cd.......2007-01-03

Very age appropriate. Disney does a good job of offering "clean" popular music that a parent doesn't have to worry about.

4 out of 5 stars Very pleasant.......2006-08-10

I have seen better days in Radio Disney. But finally, this version of Radio Disney Jams is the best ever! (okay, and no. 5). It begins with Alyson and Amanda Joy Michalka with their song "Do You Believe In Magic"; that was previously heard on Disney Channel. B5 is featured with Mr. C's Cha Cha Slide and Rihanna's Pon De Replay. Disapointments here were Jesse McCartney and Crazy Frog's annoying as ever song. The Cheetah Girls have Shake a Tail Feather from Disney's Chicken Little, and Hilary Duff has Fly. Devo 2.0 and The Click Five also contribute to this CD.

4 out of 5 stars It`s Pretty Good!.......2006-05-13

This collection was better than expected! It could have had a few better songs, but it's pleasing! It's not boring and money-wasting like the 7th one was!

Amazon.com essential recording

If your kids seem more like couch potatoes than jumping beans, then this lively dance album is sure to get them on their feet. The entire Sesame Street cast participates in this high-spirited album that includes "Me Lost Me Cookie at the Disco" with lead vocals by Cookie Monster, "The Lambaba!" featuring the Count counting lambies, and the finger-snapping "Happy Tappin' with Elmo." Hot! Hot! Hot! is great fun and invites interactive movement but still retains strong educational values that parents and children can enjoy together. --Deborah Moore

5 out of 5 stars Hot Hot Hot Dance Songs - Sesame Street.......2007-07-03

We purchased this CD for our two year old son who has Down Syndrome. He absolutely loves it! As soon as he hears it, he starts moving his arms back and forth (his dancing). I highly recommend it for any child who loves music and Sesame Street.

5 out of 5 stars Sesame Street rocks!.......2007-06-27

Baby loves these active songs. Parents can move along with baby. Much more exciting than lullabyes.

5 out of 5 stars Sesame Street ROCKS.......2007-01-15

I'm the mother of 3 children ages 12, 5 and 2 years old. Even though I purchased this for my 2 year old who is a fanatic of Sesame Street especially Elmo and Ernie, my entire family enjoy the songs and sing along. Yes...even my husband who loves the Mambo song. My 12 year old wants to add the songs to her IPOD. Wonderful addition to our music library.

1 out of 5 stars I was not thrilled.......2006-11-02

The songs just did not get me dancing. I have to say I was disappointed. But I love Kids Favorite Songs VOl 2 but was never able to buy it as it was not available

5 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining!.......2006-03-10

My son has just become a huge Sesame Street fan, but I didn't want to constantly plop him in front of the tv to give him his "Elmo" fix, so I decided to buy him this CD. I was hoping it would help him laugh, dance, and have fun with the characters without zoning out at the screen. And it has! He loves the CD and likes dancing along...especially to Happy Tappin' With Elmo.

The first few times that I played the CD he kept staring at the screen on the tv to see where the characters were, but now he just yells out their names when he recognizes the voice. Very cute!

I collect Christmas CD's and when I saw Hi-5 has one, I had to add it to my collection! My daughter is a big Hi-5 fan and I enjoy them as well. All 5 have such great voices; it's a pleasure to listen to them. I highly recommend all things Hi-5!

5 out of 5 stars Great Christmas Music.......2007-02-05

They have several new holiday songs, and the classic ones they did were done wonderfully. Our daughters still want to listen to it even though the holidays are long gone

5 out of 5 stars Songs of the Season.......2007-01-16

My children LOVE Hi-5, and this cd is Excellent. They did a wonderful job creating a collection of traditional and new Christmas songs aimed at children. Anyone who likes Hi-5 will enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars Non-stop listening "pleasure", at least for the kids!.......2007-01-10

My children listened to this CD EVERY time we were in the car, all season long. I also enjoyed it, but some of the "magic" wore off after the first couple of dozen times through it. A favorite for everyone was "Santa wear your Shorts." If your children love Hi-5, this is a must.

5 out of 5 stars It's a Hi-5 Christmas.......2006-01-31

I purchased the Jump and Jive CD from Hi-5 and say the christmas CD on sale. I had heard and seen a video of on of the christmas songs and thought my son may enjoy this one too. And sure enough he loves the Christmas CD as much as the orginal one. He still love to listen to it even though Christmas is over. I like how they kept some Christmas songs in there orignal/traditional way. But they also changed a few songs but named them as some of the more traditional ones. All in all it is a beautiful Christmas CD and I feel they are very talented singers. I think any one looking to purchase a nice Christmas CD for their child should purchase this one. You won't be disapointed.

Add Ultimate Jams to the ever-mounting stack of kids' records you grudgingly admit to liking yourself. Here, you haven't got a lot of choice: right when the Village People get done coaxing you, against your good grown-up judgment, into flapping your arms wildly to form the letters "YMCA," James Brown comes along and clobbers you with "I Got You (I Feel Good)." Yes, the nearly unbearable not-so Bubblicious bubble-gum pop numbers that only an 8-year-old could love crop up too (see "Blue [Da Ba Dee]" and "The Hampster Dance Song"), but no parent under 50 should consider herself cool unless she cops to bouncing, reflexively, to at least a few of these songs. In other words, don't be a snob: cue up the Jams and cut loose with the kids. Once you're pooped--and you will be--pop in the companion DVD. Six tracks spring to metabolism-speeding life as the radio stars clamber onto the small screen. Much stuff is strutted, most of it exhilarating. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Most songs awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-02-11

These songs are awsome. I have been looking for Get Ready For This for 3 months now ! Now I have found it and alot of other songs too. (Blue,Hamster Dance,Y.M.C.A.)And others not so good. But thats just my opinion, listen to the samples and see for yourself. ENJOY IT!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Good If You Want The Music Videos.......2006-02-18

Radio Disney Ultimate Jams sounds like a great compilation of songs, but these songs are already on jams 1 - 6, which is good if you already own those volumes. The only reason they did this was to put out the music videos that never came with volumes 1 - 6. You'd be paying for the same songs that you already paid for plus the music videos. Buy this only if you want the music videos.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.
