5 out of 5 stars (from Popwatch #10).......2001-02-11

Sonic Boom's ambient music with E.A.R. has steered clear of recourse to the shimmering "ecstasy sound" that he and Jason Pierce pioneered during Spacemen 3's final phases. Sonic has recruited drumkit stalwart Eddie Prevost for sessions and his bowed cymbal work has been ace. Here, Prevost plays more like a free jazz guy trying out his rig in a synthesizer store. A perfect idea. The near-stillness of the previous E.A.R. records is replaced by agitated activity from all corners. This is frenzied ambient music for now and tomorrow. -- Jack Walton, Popwatch magazine #10

    4 out of 5 stars dinosaur music.......2000-10-20

this cd is really cool, but it made me feel sick to my stomach every time I played it, so I sold it unfortunatley. it sounds like a future earth with mutant robot dinosaurs falling apart and then building themselves back together.

and yea that's the wrong cover. my fave E.A.R. that I've heard is probably Mesmerised, and there's a good one Amazon doesn't have called Beyond the Pale that's pretty cool, it was (still in print?) on the Fat Cat label in the UK

Yapree Howell [Piano]; Shelton Saleem Sally [Guitar]; Boaz McGee [Baritone]; Ben Montgomery [Drums]; Darius Savage [Bass]; Ari Brown [Tenor] 3rd Millenium 3MAS 80130 Recorded April 1998 ---- This recording is a testament to the value of regular performance; originally forming the basis of Vandy Harris' weekly performances at the Velvet Lounge in late 1997, Howell and his cohorts made the most of their opportunity, eventually leading to the group presented here (Brown guests on only Time Zone and Flight of Boaz). The music is fairly wide-ranging, from the rather shambling piano/drums duet closer through more casual group interaction (the pair of pieces with Brown are more jam-orientated than the rest of the disc) to the complete group concept shown in Trane Lives. What's important and striking here is the way that the group really is more than the sum of its parts. Howell is a steady pianist, somewhat out of Tyner without the bombast; McGee is finding his feet with the baritone (always an instrument for the committed) - confident rather than identifiably personal at this stage. Potentially the most interesting introduction here (apart from Brown the players have not recorded extensively) is Sally, who displays a quite arresting splintered style on Trane Lives; unfortunately he takes a less audibly prominent role for the remainder of the disc. Savage mostly confines himself to a steady walk taking brief solos, while Montgomery acts more as a commentator than as a time-keeper or rhythm-setter. Some of the pieces seem to have been worked on more comprehensively than others and it is here that the group is most effective; Trane Lives (a rather familiar composition), Hang Time, Fred's Velvet Mood and Hihena Walk are all good examples of this - where the group (except McGee) stay constantly busy behind whoever is soloing at the time. Another strength of the recording is the way in which solos grow out of the composition and arrangement rather than (as is too often the case) appearing as separate entities. I think what we see here is a very good example of Chicago's tradition of "make the most of what you have" rather than forcing the music to do what's expected of it. Less radically than in the earlier days of the AACM, but the group interaction serves to draw attention away from the less-than-wholly-realized soloing capabilities of the individuals. The two pieces with Brown also show this up; a much stronger soloist than the others, he is presented in a more casual group context and the sense very much id that these two pieces might not have been so effective if performed just by the core quintet. Heavenly Father is a trio piece which suffers a little in the way that the absence of McGee and Sally tends to push Howell out into a more exposed situation. One aspect of Howell's music which is not presented here is his electronic keyboard; the Velvet Lounge doesn't offer a piano, presenting a challenge of sorts to pianists performing there. Some just bring in an electric keyboard and pretend that it's an acoustic instrument. Howell's approach was more idiosyncratic, when working with Harris he would alternate between a conventional style and a more wayward Ra/funfair abstract style; it was very effective - it would be good to hear more of it. It's an honest recording, it presents musicians who may be on the verge of forming complete personal styles (McGee has been hovering for a few years now - Sally is more of a newcomer); above all it offers a group with the confidence to play their own music in their own way.
