5 out of 5 stars ARE THESE GUYS REALLY FROM MARS???.......2005-12-08

A beautiful album full of minimal beats, meandering melodies, tripped-out atmospherics and dreamy soundscapes...Some would consider this album weird and off-kilter, but it's really a work of pure, creative genius. The songs make you think and don't impose on your mindset..."Stereomission", "Kompod", "Kanu" and "Bib" are perhaps the most accessible tracks on "Iaora Tahiti(Reis)", while everything else takes a minute to grow on you...nevertheless, when Mouse on Mars throws it down, you're in for quite a few surprises. Makes you wonder if these guys really are from Mars!

      4 out of 5 stars last track.......2004-05-23

the last track has a short bit of dialog in german, otherwise it is as described below. if you know german it is quite interesting. one of the members of mouse on mars describes what he believes consciousness is, using "die innere orange" ("the inner orange") as a metaphor. using his definition of something through which we make "sense" of our senses and experience the world, the first several minutes of near-blank white noise contrasts wonderfully with the last few containing something like beautiful music so distorted and garbled that it is nearly unrecognizable as such.

5 out of 5 stars Tiki Bar Electronica.......2002-09-07

As a rule, I'm not a huge fan of either Polynesian-derived exotica nor the bleepy electronica practiced by Mouse on Mars on other albums. More rhythmic than most electronica, and more varied than most exotica, "Iaora Tahiti" far exceeds the sum of its parts. I can't image better background music for the post-modern Tiki Bar.

5 out of 5 stars i really wanted to hate this.......2001-11-27

I've steered clear of Mouse On Mars for years now simply because I think their name, CD titles and cover art is a bit cheesy (Vulvaland? Sheesh, as a gay man that title is not appealing) and if that's the case then what will their music sound like?? I resisted buying Iaora Tahiti although the price was cheap, friends recommended it to me and the reviewers here seem to unanimously agree it's their best release. I just couldn't get past their name or the cheesy psychedelic cover. Then one day, with money to burn, I went to the music store to buy the new flanger CD but the release date was pushed back. The new aphex twin wouldn't be released for a couple of weeks and I had money to burn so I said what the hey and I bought it. I tried my hardest to resist liking the music as it slowly unfolded around me. It seemed impossible that MOM could sound as good as they did. I listened to the disc once through and then put it away. Strangely, the next day I found myself humming an unfamiliar melody and realized it was MOM. I plucked the CD off my shelf, put it back in my disc player and there it has remained for the past month.

I'm a newly recruited fan of MOM now. I can't say how enjoyable I find this CD to be.

Omnibuzz sounds like crickets in outer space; kompod and Saturday night worldcup fieber are great upbeat tracks that transcend what dance music is all about; kanu is wonderful, I can't sit still for a minute when I listen to it and papa, antoine is my favorite track. It's perfect in every aspect, in every detail. A spacy, floaty interplanetary trip across the dreamscape of your mind with that wonderful melody that kicks in halfway through. I hear a little bit of the orb, future sound of london, orbital and plone in mouse on mars (well really only schunkel reminds me of plone with that xylophone percussion). However, I must agree with some of the reviewers on this page about die innere orange. It really is a wasted track at 12+ minutes. It sounds like someone accidentally hit the record button in the studio, simply recording white noise and tonal variations thereof while having a brief conversation in german before realizing the record was on, stupidly pushing buttons before finding the off button. SNORE.

However, on a side note after enjoying this disc as much as I did, I purchased their lastest release Idiology. What happened? Certainly it can't be the same group that produced this lovely dreamy piece of music. So now I'm wavering again as far as my feelings towards MOM. Maybe Idiology will grow on me but in any case, Iaora Tahiti was a pleasant surprise. I would recommend it anyonE looking for something fresh and new in the world of electronica.

5 out of 5 stars Mouse on Mars Makes Me Happy.......2001-03-19

This is my fav. of the all the Mouse albums. Such wonderful, thematic music. If anyone thinks that electronic is dry, unemotions, and not melodic- listen to this one! They have such a talent of making bleeps and blops (which is basically what they are about, bleeps and blops) and turning them into real songs. Try it out. They make me happy and when i've seen them play live- it seems they make themselves happy too!

Beware though, these guys know how to market and sell albums- i've been dupped into buying a seeming new release and only found it was a re-named release of an import i've bought before....

      Album Description

German post-techno duo Mouse On Mars are among a growing number of electronic music groups dabbling in complex, heavily hybridized forms that include everything from ambient, techno, & dub to rock, jazz, & jungle. This CD is a first time collection of out of print & import only EPs, & includes tracks from 1997's 'Cache Coeur Naif' featuring Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier on vocals. Too Pure. 2003.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Brilliant music.......2003-05-04

This is a great CD of EPs that collected Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner's work from the mid 90s. It's a worthwhile collection of songs that make it an interesting collection of songs. They do need a bit of time to get used to but they are worth the money. Those that have the EPs already ( like the reviewer below ) may just skip buying this because they already have the songs. But those who don't and are willing to pay for this album will not be disappointed

3 out of 5 stars only for the diehard fans who proabably already have the EPs.......2003-02-20

Rost Pocks consists mainly of EP singles from MoM's first two releases, Vulvaland and Iaora Tahiti, and three of the four tracks from their EP Cache Coeur Naif with Laetitia Sadier from stereolab (the instrumental fourth track 'glim' is not included here).

A few of the tracks are offered up in slightly different versions and there are some EP only tracks that appear as well. Noticeably absent are EPs from Niun Niggung. I would have loved to see the inclusion of the Disk Dusk or Distroia EPs. However, as most of the tracks are from MoM's earlier more mellower EP releases, this disc comes across as very laidback and downtempo-ish. Not a bad thing.

Esssentially this a disc solely for the diehard completist MoM fans (who chances are own all these EPs already). There's nothing new here. This is MoM's second release of rehashed material in the last 12 months (Agit Itter It It from March of last year being the other release). That's not a bad thing, because this is MoM and any MoM is better than no MoM but come on Andy and Jan, it's time for you guys to put out something new . . . soon.

      2 out of 5 stars Ehh...........2006-02-14

This is the first volume in the series that I've purchased and probably the last. I Figured I'd give it a chance at a quick glance at the store. It features some reputable artisits such as Ferry Corsten, Armin, Paul Van and Tiesto. However, it also features some of their not-so-hot remixes. There's no real muscle to it. The only song I actually enjoyed was Angel, by Jezper Sonderlund.

      3 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2004-11-08

I try to listen to respectible and well done music. However, I set my standards for music aside when I listen to Trance. The music is so dramatic and accesible it's impossible to not sit back and just enjoy it. I started playing techno and dance music on my iPod while I skated some months ago and I've found that trance is the best for skating music. I'm really tempted to make a skatevideo using this stuff.

If you want to enjoy a fun record with a bunch of sings that hit the mark just right and some that sadly miss then get this one.

4 out of 5 stars Hmmmmmmm... Not Bad.......2004-05-25

Here is the third of the Pure Trance series. Eighteen more tracks of these nice trance songs. Even though a lot of the songs here sound all similar, it's still a good compilation. This album is un-mixed. This is the kind of album where there are g a p s in between the songs, instead of the mixing where the songs sound like they've runintogether.

Pure Trance 3 contains songs like the Kansai remix of Jan Johnston's 1995 trance hit "Calling Your Name." It's still a good remix of a song from nearly a decade ago. There's also Moby's "In My Heart." I've gotten addicted to this track, it's one of my favorites on here. Another good trance song on here is Riva's "Time Is The Healer," remixed by Armin Van Buuren. Armin Van Buuren's one of my favorite DJs. I'm gonna see him in an interview with XY-TV at the Virgin Megastore in Boston. This compilation also contains "And Then They Start To Dance" by DJ Snow Man. You hear a guy whispering "And then... they start... to dance..." with echoing. There's whispering echoes in Dito's "Sky" as well (Of course it's a different vocalist). Another nice trance song. My favorite out of all the tracks is "Welcome 2 Wonderland" by Y.O.M.C. The vocalist in the song says "Can you hear it? Can you feel it? Can you see it? Close your eyes. Welcome to wonderland!" in a deep bold voice. I would answer "yes" to the questions he asks. Other songs include "Angel" by Jezper Soderland, ATB's "I Will Not Forget", the Paul Van Dyk mix of Second Sun's "Empire", "One With The Universe" by O.S.I.R.I.S., DJ Dark Raven's "I Believe", and more.

This isn't a bad compilation. Good thing I listened to this album before I made my decision to buy it or not. After listening for myself, I bought it and I'm happy I did so. Should I do the same for volume four if they release it? Might be some more good stuff on that album as well as this one.

      Album Description

Cosmicity returns with the band's best album ever, mixing the catchy, simple synthpop structures and songs that made the band popular from the beginning together with a modern edge and slick production.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Album.......2003-03-01

I got into synthpop just a couple of years ago, and Cosmicity was one of the first acts I really explored. The first album I heard was "Isabella" and I thought that was amazing. After hearing that album, I wanted to hear more and subsequently tracked down other albums by Cosmicity. I previously thought that Isabella was the best, but then I heard Pure. This album is spectacular. Literally every track is a gem. Mark has always explored a lighter sounding synthpop, but with this album he seems to combine that sound beautifully with some of the most insightful, yet somehow amusing, lyrics I've ever heard. My personal favorite tracks are "I Want You," "Let Me In," "Escapism," and "I Have Nothing." I would consider this album a must have for all fans of synthpop.

Ever looked at your CDs, and had a hard time choosing between tossing something on by Pet Shop Boys, OMD, Erasure, New Order, or A-ha??

Yeah? Ok, well this album can rid you of that tremendous choice.

No? Well, all I can say is that I pity you and I hope your music collection gets better soon. Buying this CD will help you on your way. In fact, it is one of the early steps to recovery.

So what do you want me to say? This is a strong release from a talented band. It has good songs and great songs, highs and lows, twists and turns.

Goes well with thrill seekers and schizophrenics.

      5 out of 5 stars DEFEAT.......2003-02-27

The first time I heard Defeat I knew I wanted it. I actually found the single (which I recommend if you can find it) and listened to the song on repeat for 3 days. The rest of the cd is similarly good. I also recommend Cosmicity's Isabella cd.

      5 out of 5 stars Pure Music.......2003-02-26

This CD has been in constant rotation ever since I got it many months ago. Cosmicity has refined his sound to create even more catchy/complex songs that tear at the soul. His lyrics are more complex then I have ever heard before. He music is catchy and you will find yourself singing along and singing long after the CD has stopped spinning.

Some standouts on this CD include: "I Want You" a poppy song with a infectious melody, "Let Me In" a more minamilist song with amazing synth programming, it is a song of longing which really connects with reality. "Escapism" the only instrumental on the CD a very nice touch to set off all the other songs on the disk. "Hotel Allegro Chicago" a nice finish to the album, a slower and slightly darker song.

Overall this is definately a must have for anyone who likes electronic/pop music. A mix of sounds/moods and lyrical complexity gaurantee this album constant rotation in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Purification for the soul........2003-02-14

Love it. I just got this cd and it's already one of my favorites of all time. It's exactly what I look for in a cd. The music and lyrics are brilliant, and you can tell there is passion behind them. There are dancy songs and mellow songs, yet a consistency that makes the album a cohesive whole. Best song is "I Want You." It's a perfect mid-tempo song with a melody that sticks in your brain. Other standouts are "Darkness," "Something," "Let Me In," "I Have Nothing," and "The Princess of Detroit." The only track I don't dig is "The Perfect Shape." You want it to go somewhere that it never does. With that being the only negative, I highly recommend this cd. And for the record, it definitely does not sound like Erasure. The song "I Have Nothing" is reminiscent of Pet Shop Boys, but Cosmicity definitely has its own unique sound. One warning: don't listen to this before the previous album Binary Language of Love. I made that mistake, and Binary didn't even compare, yet it probably would have been good if I'd heard it before Pure.

1 out of 5 stars Weak material, poorly compiled.......2007-06-18

Unlike E'Dude (2 comments down), I don't particularly care if the music isn't a continuous mix, however, the average 2nd grader could have extracted these tracks from the original source with more polish. The tracks fade in and out in a way that almost emphasizes that they are being lifted from longer ones. (Imagine a song that starts fading just as someone begins to sing. That doesn't actualy happen here but it should give you an idea of what I'm talking about.)

Beyond that, the music itself is boring. There are no catchy hooks, no electronic manipulations that you haven't heard a thousand times already, and they all sound aimless and similar. Looking for something with material on it that reminds you of one of those "Oh my god!" moments on the dance floor? Don't waste your time looking here.

4 out of 5 stars Best Trance CD I've stumbled upon in a while........2007-05-16

I've been looking for some new good Trance for a while and I found this. It seems to be getting harder and harder to find worthwhile Trance that isnt polluted by annoying high pitched female vocals, so this was a nice treat.

For those of you like me who prefer their trance to be all about the beats and sounds and not about the distracting lyrics then this is for you. (you can probably already tell I'm not a fan of very much vocals in my Trance)

Another thing I love about this CD is that it features songs and artists that probably not very many people know about. It's not jam packed with the overplayed "Top 40" of Trance music like many other Trance CDs are. It was quite refreshing.

I'd reccommend this CD to anyone who is looking to discover new awesome songs and rare artists in this genre.

      1 out of 5 stars It's not sequentially mixed.......2007-04-25

I was pretty disappointed, though not surprised at the fact that this Cd is not sequentially mixed, meaning that the songs are not blended. So each track is interrupted by a pause, just like when listening to a Cd of any other genre. But most dance fans , like me, don't find any sense in listening to a dance/trance Cd if it's not a continous, non-stop selection of blended tracks from beginning to end. Just like when you are in a dance club. To top it off, the songs fade rapidly. It gives you the impression that the recording engineer wanted to "split" from the studio as soon as possible. The only thing that saves this Cd from getting 0 stars ( aside from the fact that it's the lowest score amazon lets you give) is it's half-decent songs. My recommendation is to skip this Cd.

I had always heard of Mouse on Mars and of couse stayed away from them for fear that their style would be too "techno" or too "popular". That ain't the case on "Autoditaker." This is an incredible album of heavy basslines, glitches, melodies, abstract beats and catchy hooks sure to please. I just got hip to these guys--damn those sampling stations--but I think I might've found a new favorite group. Just what the doctor ordered!
