buy this.......2004-06-13

This is a must have album for those who love music without borders- for those who like worldly phat sounds- highly reccomended are tracks 3,4,7,9 (especially 7 because the base dosen't get any better)- I love this album and received several request to burn it - you just really can't go wrong with this one- it will make a warm addition to any world collection- I can't wait for volume 2

Overwhelmingly new experience.......2003-08-23

Although my taste in music could be regarded as extremely eclectic, running the gamut from Hildergard of Bingen to The Rembrandts I never heard anything quite like the cuts on this album. I was sitting at the computer with a music station playing on the television when I heard Baaba Mal doing Souka Nayo. My ears immediately pricked up, thinking it was a piece of interesting electronica. After tracking it down to the Phat Global CD and popping it into the CD player in the car I was absolutely transfixed by the alternately strange, driving, haunting sounds of the other tracks. There are times when I just can't get El Estuche out of my mind. It simply invites you in and takes over. And though I have (or thought I had) absolutely no taste for salsa or the latino sound in general Sarge Garcia's Jumpi just drove me insane! It's not the kind of thing you want to have screaming out of your car's speakers on the freeway. You quickly forget about the speedometer as the music takes over and drives you. I found this album to be a wholly new experience, and I strongly recommend it, especially to those who already have an inclination to the latino sound. Still, its mix of French and Spanish lyrics, and Indian and Arabic styles makes it something totally different.

There's definitely a new breed of compilation album out there, one that doesn't just plunk down tracks from a label's artists, but instead offers interesting remixes, and sometimes even dares to license other, unrelated things listeners might not have come across. Phat Global #1 is part of the new breed, from the Palm label. So, along with remixed Sly and Robbie and Baaba Maal (a truly radical remix)--their two flagship artists--there are gems from Indian Ropeman, taking dance and hip-hop in an Asian direction; France's Imhotep, offering a sparse, scintillating track; Manu Chao; Colombia's Aterciopelados, who have an interesting take on their national cumbia music; Cheb Mami; and future Palm artist Jolly Mukherjee, who combines the Asian Undergound with Bollywood strings and sounds. The disc is adventurous, the way good compilations should be, and it scouts all over the world's horizons. Hopefully the rest in the series will prove to be as good. --Chris Nickson

Kudos on inclusion of the up and coming latin artists doing new beats with their music... I really love this compilation... It takes me on a musical trip through my mind...

a great compilation! I already knew the best 2 songs of the album: Marseillais du Nord by Cheb Mami and Clandestino by Manu Chao. The spectrum ranges from English-Asian big beat, Indish Bollywood Electronica, Latin music from Spain and France to African music. This is "MUSIC" - how you maybe have not experienced it. Also recommended: the compilation "Fuerza!"

This album is one of the best mixes of international music I have ever seen -- everything from French rap to Arabic to latin music, not to mention by some very good musicians. If you like a little variety and enjoy some different rythyms this is definitley a to get. And even if you aren't sure you like this stuff, it's a good way to branch out and expand you music taste.

Expanding The Diversity.......2000-07-21

For quite some time, the crossover of the world's musical cultures and electronic beats has been dominated by the influence of India (Talvin Singh, Badmarsh & Shri, etc.), dub & reggae (all things trip-hop), and trance-y fusionists (Transglobal Underground, Banco de Gaia, etc.). Now with this compilation we finally see that breakbeats--and the influence of real, old hiphop is very prevalent here--can beat match with other cultural sources. Latin styles seem to work especially well, and Sidestepper's drum & bass track might be the best on the album. Not all the tracks jump, however, and neither of the two remixes of Sly & Robbie improve on the original. Still, a good expansion of the sonic vocabulary, and a good listen. But where is _East_ Asia?
