Heaviest Pantera to date........2007-04-07

Although I do not have The Great Southern Trendkill, I own every other Pantera release and can say without a doubt that this is their heaviest, hardest, most extreme album to date. It is pure metal mayhem, sheer madness. The only slow songs that we see on here are Good Friends and a Bottle Of Pills and the Black Sabbath cover- Planet Caravan. Good Friends is the only mediocre track and in my opinion is pretty unnecessary, yet pretty humorous. It's really hard to pick and choose favorites. I'd have to say that I'm Broken, Slaughtered, and Use My Third Arm are the best tracks. Slaughtered is incredibly heavy and catchy as hell, but it's Use My Third Arm that is really insane and sounds like it could be death metal at some times. I'm Broken has a nice, dirty, southern style riff that will no doubt be stuck in your head. Of course, the fan favorite-5 Minutes Alone is one of the other great tracks on which Phil's vocals are the real standout.

The whole band sounds excellent on here. Phil stays mainly to a low, heavy growl, but at a few points demonstrates his unique singing voice. He does some death metal screams which are also awesome. Dimebag is of course in grade-A form here and has some very complex riffs and trademark solos. Vinnie is in top notch form on the drums and his double bass is heard throughout and he even brings the ole' cowbell out for some parts. Rex "Rocker" Brown also does a superb job, and although Good Friends and a Bottle of Pills is the worst song, it does have a real cool bass line throughout and he puts down some sweet riffs during Dimebag's solos. Also, the cover that you see on the cd is not the original. They had a different one, but it was to explicit for the record company's likings so they changed it to this.

This is a must have, classic 90s album. This is their heaviest album and is also complex. It will definitely keep you occupied listening for all the time changes and different riffs. So if you want something heavy and different and you love thrash metal, go for Far Beyond Driven.

Undeniable CLASSIC!.......2007-01-25

I'm listening to it right now... Jan. 24/07... when did this come out? '94?! This is still some truly inspirational sh!#! Alot of people say that Pantera was their "gateway" band to more extreme music, but I'll be damned if this itself isn't some extreme music. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't this debut at #1 on Billboard?! Could that even happen today? I think not. This was more than just a step up from "Vulgar...", this was a milestone in their career. "The Great Southern Trendkill" would follow, and while it would push the limits of what their own fans deemed "acceptable", it was just that little bit outside their own boundaries which made it less accessible. Regardless of what they'd done or where they'd go, "Far Beyond Driven" is simply one the best HEAVY records of the 90's, if not all time in the heavily loaded metal canon. It's thrash, it's death, it's their influences in hardcore, in the old-school, it's so southern it hurts. Most notable is the fact that there isn't ONE BAND out there today that sounds like Pantera, and those that try (hello, Lamb Of God), receive either critical acclaim or pure hatred from the underground. In the 90's, and even today, it's hard to find someone who doesn't enjoy or at the very least respect Pantera. This is their "big break". This is the album I always turn to when I need to feel "metal". And really, how often do "big break" and "metal" coincide? That says alot about "Far Beyond Driven". Big in every way and SO metal. And one point I absolutely need to add... until just a year or so ago, I never gave the lyrics a thought, but Phil wrote some really great lyrics. Not "brutal" or "Grim" lyrics, generally real HONEST lyrics. That's that hardcore influence shining through. Where do you think all the mallcore kiddies and emo-core kids get this from? 'Cept Phil's honesty has nothing to do with heartache/heart break... Pantera was HARDCORE and his lyrics speak volumes about (at least his) passion, frustration, confusion. That was/is a breath of fresh air in metal.

Final glory before the decline.......2006-12-10

Imagine: it's the mid-90s and Grunge is everywhere. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Smashing Pumpkins rule supreme; Speed Metal is pretty much dead. Pantera, however, refuses to fade away. Instead, they release FBD as a gigantic "f--- you" to the entire Grunge/Alternative music scene.

While not as good as "Vulgar Display of Power," Pantera staked out their claim as the last remaining Speed Metal band of any consequence. Things went downhill after FBD but, in 1994 at least, they were still at the height of their game. While some tracks are weak, FBD is good overall and worth buying for any Metal fan.

An Average Album, not very "Pantera" like.......2006-11-12

After having reached a huge amount of success with thier 2nd album, "Vulgar Display of Power" Pantera returned to give us "Far beyond Driven" Now, I am not saying that the band "sold out" but the album certainly looks like it written to appeal to an even larger fan base. The opening track "Strength beyond Strength" starts off furiously, and then the album starts to crumble from the opening of the second track "Becoming". "5 Minutes Alone", "I'm Broken", and "Good Friends, and a bottle of Pills" are what drags the album down. Simple song struture, lack of intelligent lyrics, and more a "poppy" metal feel, are not very Pantera like, and thats a helluva lot of filler to start out an album with. The album shifts gears with "Hard Lines, Sunken Cheeks" which is the best song on the album. "Slaughterd is my second favorite track, in which Phil almost have a "Death Metal" vocal style on it. Believe me, he can pull it off too, as I have seen concert footage of him doing a Song wiht Morbid Angel, and he pulls it with ease. "25 Years" is a pretty strong song, and "Shedding Skin" and "Using my Third Arm" are passible, but nothing special. "Theories of Rejection" and the cover of Sabbtahs "Planet Caravan" end the album on a high note. So lets see, 12 songs, Six of them really shine, Two of them are so-so, and the rest are just plain flat out suck. That might cut it on any other record, but for a Pantera album, in which all their other albums seem to have almost no filler, its just not worth of anything higher then Three Stars.

The aggression continues with Far Beyond Driven..........2006-10-27

Pantera's 7th album is perhaps the most aggressively personal offering of their entire career but unfortunately this has its upsides and downsides.

The album kicks off with Strength Beyond Strength, it immediately establishes the tone of the album offering nothing but a heavy groove and brutal drumming throughout. Unfortunately the groove does not sustain itself for very long and soon it begins to show that was a wonderful intro does not turn into a wonderful song. Dimebag's guitar-work and Vinnie Paul's drumming are its only saving grace. The lyrics are nonsensical and Anselmo seems to be trying far too hard to find any real rage in this subject.

Becoming is the album's second track and here things turn completely in the other direction. Anselmo draws from personal experiences and delivers a truly menacing diatribe on self-image/self-worth set to a fantastically catchy and creative groove. Next up is another brutal offering and another staple in Pantera's catalog: 5 Minutes Alone. Supposedly inspired by an encounter with a fan's enraged father, here Anselmo turns the tables and places himself in the role of said character. Once again painting a picture of finding one-self in a hostile environment it is easy to see why the song appeals to fans of the band. The riffs are absolutely brutal, with no apologies or breaks and Anselmo growl hits a high mark towards the end of the song as his bestial growling of the chorus echo and slowly fade away.

What follows is one of the more self-indulgent offerings in Pantera's catalog. Good Friends and a Bottle of Booze must have seemed like a good, short "song" to give listeners a break from the aggressive barrage that the album has been building up to this point. However, because of the lyrical content the song comes across as some sort of in-joke between Anselmo and whoever he is directing these words at, if anyone. Boasting is all to be found here and Vinnie Paul's catchy drumming is the track's only redeeming quality.

Hard Lines, Sunken Cheeks provides the appropriate cease-fire in Pantera's aural assault. A slow (for Pantera), grinding intro is followed by a fast tempo and Anselmo quickly spewing forth on his decadent life. The chorus periodically slows things down and returns to the grind that served as the intro. A very melodic solo is a note-worthy highlight of this track as well. Slaughtered's machine gun riffs follow with somewhat forgettable lyrics and vocals but a tremendous groove throughout.

25 Years continues to provide some insight into Phil Anselmo's past by revealing his feelings towards a certain paternal figure in a very graphic way. The song itself is hardly worth including as an album track though. Overly simplistic and reminiscent of Good Friends and A Bottle of Booze, it feels like a badly written diatribe with a theme far too common to be of any interest if Anselmo weren't such an enigmatic figure. As it is the aforementioned is the only reason why this track is even slightly note-worthy.

Shedding Skin follows 25 Years in seemingly giving a glimpse into Anselmo's relationships. This time the lyrics apparently deal with friendships or romantic relationships and trust therein. A fantastic chorus is one of the highlights and the groove, slow and steady, eventually builds into a solo that gives way to pounding finale.

Use My Third Arm and Throes of Rejection close the album's original content with disappointing lyrics but powerful, if somewhat forgettable, melodies. The former touches on the anarchist mindset while the latter deals with the insecurities of dating. Both topics get a far too familiar and simplistic treatment with the lyrics sometimes bordering on throwaway lines. Musically the highlight of the two is Throes of Rejection, which sets off with pounding drums and menacing riffs, as if announcing an incoming showdown. Sadly what is delivered thereafter remains very catchy musically but poorly conceived lyrically.

The closer on the album is a cover of Black Sabbath's Planet Caravan. As far as covers go it is a very faithfully adaptation of the original, perhaps a little too faithful for its own good. To their credit Pantera more than do justice to this classic but the song simply does not fit in with the rest of the mood the album has been building up to this point.

Far Beyond Driven shows its true colors from the very beginning by setting off on an aggressive binge that seldom lets up. At times Pantera seems to be trying far too hard to enhance the unfiltered rage that was captured in Vulgar Display of Power and this leads to some disappointing tracks. Nonetheless, amongst the failed attempts, lay some true gems from Pantera's catalogue that successfully manage to one-up vulgar Display of Power in its venomous bite.

A two-disc set of Flaming Lips recordings from 1989 to 1991, reissues the complete In a Priest Driven Ambulance and adds (in effect) 23 bonus tracks - comprising B-sides (from the singles 'Drug Machine' and 'Unconsciously Screamin') plus a collection of four-track demos often bootlegged as The Mushroom Tapes. Of the extra material, the B-sides are best, especially a pair of covers - one of the Sonics' sullen garage nugget 'Strychnine' and the other of Elvis Costello's '(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding.' This is an incredible collection of Lips early stuff. The other companion collection, "Finally The Punk Rockers Are Taking Acid", discs 1-3, are the first recordings by the Flaming Lips, and it is very good. If you are a huge fan of the Flaming Lips like I am, both of these are good to have for historical purposes. The Flaming Lips have a rich history of inventive music and if you just start at The Soft Bulletin, arguably where they are roughly at stylistically, and have the three most recent recordings, that one and Yoshimi, and At War With The Mystics, then wouldn't you be a bit curious as to how they arrived at this point?

I was curious, and I live in the area where they grew up in central Oklahoma, and pretty much ignored them up until about a year ago. Now I have all of their CDs except for one of them.

You should be curious if you consider yourself to be an explorer of artistically viable music. The Flaming lips have obvious influences from the classic/acid-rock era including Pink Floyd, the Beatles, and many others. But this collection reveals how they developed their ideas from a Punk Rock Acid Rock perspective, and, depending on your frame of mind, and how receptive you are to noise/Acid/punk and their newer musical ideas, you should find The Day They Shot A Hole In The Jesus Egg rewarding--I did.

Disc one includes the "Preist Driven Ambulance" album, which was their last pre-Warner Bros. album, and also their last album without Steven Drozd on the drums. It is looser, and much more guitar driven than their recent recordings, although all the recordings prior to Soft Bulletin are more guitar/noise driven. There are plenty of mind-blowing ideas and many beautiful songs. The bass is more prominent in the mix. The rawness is there but the punk-influenced Acid sound is there and it plays very well. Some of the stand-out songs from disc one are played again as out-takes, different versions and they are on Disc Two, the Mushroom Tapes. This disc took me a few plays to enjoy but I now listen to it more than the others. There are some songs that are beautiful, such as the Stones-influenced Five Stop Mother Superior Rain, with its slide guitar work, harking back to Stones Wild Horses, or Pink Floyd.

Anyway, I won't go into the details. Listen and experience this collection on your own. With an open mind, you'll be richly rewarded.

Give it a second spin.......2006-01-28

Im not going to lie, when i bought this album (blind) I hated it. I felt like I had to like it cause I like the band, but i really didnt like it. But after giving it another try recently, I found that it was about ten times better than I originally thought. After my third time through it, I actually greatly enjoyed it. It can be hard at times, because of their drug induced lyrics and music, but still a credit to Wayne Coynes upbeat and silly styl. So dont be fooled by the 30 second clips, cause this album has more than meets the initail eye.

WOW.......2005-07-15

The first time I listened to this album, it sounded like a bunch of lo fi noise. But once I sat down with a nice pair of head phones and just listened, I was able to appreciate what a mature, gorgeous album this is.

Yes, there is a lot of guitar noise. But the noise is not an end in itself. It is a tool that the Flaming Lips deploy with surgical precision. In this album's best moments, feedback effects laden guitar riffs alternate with periods of unsettling quiet to create a heightened sense of dramatic tension. This tension, which is sustained for most of the album, turns what would otherwise be a bunch of very catchy country and blues inspired melodies into an edgy psychedelic masterpiece.

It may take a few listens to really appreciate what the Lips are doing here; but, in my opinion, the reward is well worth it.

The Flaming Lips get...good? Whoa........2005-01-27

Although it's loaded with demos and outtakes, the main reason you want to own "..Jesus Egg" is for "In a Priest Driven Ambulance". I think the actual album is out of print, so you might as well get it here with the nice packaging and what not.

"Ambulance" is The Flaming Lips' fourth album (released in 1990), and it's a major improvement. The haze of psychedelia, punk, and white noise that made up their previous three albums is still in tact..but now they've injected the music with a heavy dose of pop. In other words, these songs actually have distinguishable melodies and hooks!

"Shine on Sweet Jesus" combines caterwauling guitar feedback and Wayne Coyne's shrill vocals with an irrestiable singalong hook. It's like white noise meets bubblegum pop.

"Unconsciously Screamin" is a glorious psychedelic mess, as are the noisy assaults "God Walks Among Us Now" and "Mountain Side".

There's actually a lot of quieter moments on the album too. "Rainin' Babies" is a really gorgeous ballad; it's like a lo-fi precursor to "The Soft Bulletin". The majestic "Five Stop Mother Superior Rain" is similar fare that also works well.

Other highlights include the thumping bass weirdness of "Take Meta Mars", the trippy "Stand In Line", the unsettling, parking-lot folk of "There You Are" and their cover of "What a Wonderful World" (which surprisingly stays pretty true to the original).

The outtakes are hit or miss. There's some decent stuff on there. And the demos are interesting, but not something you'll probably listen to over and over again. But "In a Priest Driven Ambulance" is a true gem; not only their best early work, but one of their best altogether. And that's why "..Jesus Egg" is an essential purchase.

Hot to Trot for them Flaming Lips.......2004-05-21

To abstain from any superfluous felicitations that would hinder the evident brilliance of this album and to put lucidly my feelings on this particular effort, I shall simply state that In a Priest Driven Ambulance is one of the greatest sonic excursions I have been privy to hear in some time. Given that I was an ardent Lips fan prior to listening, my adoration was perpetuated to the nigh crux of hysteria when attaining a copy of my own. I suppose one could make the rather impotent attempt at actually delineating all the myriad components that make this album an astonishingly addictive substance, but such puerile plying would be immediately reduced to an ashen cinder because this album (as with nearly every other Lips album) evades all proper articulation. The vertiginous furrows of relentless feedback and white noise (that seem to ebb and swoon upon the nubile shoals of your ears), the imperious obfuscation of the Dadaist lyrics (slurred and howled in the most strained and salient pronunciations), the volutary movement of the music (i.e. the way the whole composition seems to impel the listener's volitation - incensing a feeling of flight), and all the innumerable idiosyncrasies make this one of the most impressive records of the 90s (compare this to that apathetic dive bomb dirge of bloated noise and unctuous production known as Nevermind to get my point). An aberrant to the pervasive ennui inspired by their contemporaries, In a Priest Driven Ambulance not only deviated from the prevailing miasma of alternative music by the promulgation of an album that prominently featured antipodean doses of noise terror and acoustic subtlety (the two often managing to coincide like in the wonderful "Five Stop Mother Superior Rain") but also marked an unprecedented turn in the Lips' own catalogue. Their preceding work had been infamous for its layers of feedback and white noise, and even though they still incorporated those elements into the "Priest" album, they had been reluctant to produce anything that dared veer from their course. Though their aptitude for bizarre melody had been brusquely exerted on tracks from Ow My Gawd the Flaming Lips and some parts of the cacophonous feedback symphony of Telepathic Surgery, it is here that the band began to intersperse their sense of musical competency. Restraining from the stentorian deluge of noise that made itself present on Telepathic Surgery, the Flaming Lips opted to create an album that deftly compounded all of those aspects and more - thus making this their first masterpiece (an echelon of which they now can amend with Transmissions From the Satellite Heart, The Clouds Taste Metallic, and the orchestral genius of the Soft Bulletin). But commending the album with such adulation is irreparably futile. I cannot put into words (nor would I try) the overwhelming sense of appeasement that fills every pore of my being when I hear the Lips' sardonic cover of "What a Wonderful World" or the obtuse hilarity (I sense I'm missing the joke) of "Shine on Sweet Jesus." Given the fact that they supported bands like the Butthole Surfers and Sonic Youth (neither of whom have come close to approaching this summit of plangent perfection), it is somewhat surprising to note the psychedelic pop they have chosen to adopt (though that in no way denigrates their eminence). But the result from their predilection of musical evolution is a strong track record that has currently failed to disappoint me (unlike the aforementioned Buttholes). Someone recently inquired as to the sound of the Flaming Lips, to what bands were they consanguineous. I had no answer, try as I did, all of my syllables dissipated and dissolved into indecipherable prate. To adequately describe this music for someone who has never heard it is a formidable challenge. All I can say is that I love the Flaming Lips, and even though some may be disconcerted by their bumptious conviviality, I can only retort that you have to give reverence to a band that can form a lyric like "I was born the day they shot a hole in the Jesus egg/ I was born the day they shot John Lennon's brain/ The way you look at me sucks me down the sidewalk."

This guy does not have the industry, spin, and following of genre masters like thievery company, but this is every bit as good. However you characterize this music it is in the top 5% the genre. If you like Zero 7, thievery company, air supply, or radiohead, then you will like this. Other reviewers have done a good job of describing the technical quality...I couldn't do that anyway. The used price reflects the current market value of the music.

Great chilled groove CD.......2003-03-19

This CD is great for a myriad of occasions - it's the perfect type of background music, but can be in the "spotlight", too. It's ambient in the way that while you're listening, you feel like you should be watching a really cool movie - perfect soundtrack music. But it's also "groove" because you can't help but want to move your body to the beat at many occasions when listening.

I have listened to this CD many, many times and honestly am NOT at all tired of it. It's a true "classic" for me because it never gets old - I continue to discover more interesting elements every time I hear it. Highly recommended!

Full of images and smooth, solid grooves.......2002-11-20

Uplift Drift, is a cinematic journey that "Lifts you up and takes you higher" Full of images and smooth, solid grooves that transport the listener to a place where you have the freedom to lean back and float or get up and move to the ambient groove.

This CD is very good in the audio sense also... Clean tight mixes, an obvious amount of work went into the recordings presented here. Terms like "attention to detail" come to mind. It seems a lot of attention was also paid to the psyco-acoustic realm, where sound images drift in, out and past the listener during their journey. Check this one out on headphones !!

The orchestration and rhythms are top notch and totally original. I think Magic Sound Fabric has carved out a signature sound here. Working in a genre where there is precious little "Dub" oriented music that smoothly blends elements of Ambient, Reggae, Experimental Electronic and good old Space Music, I would think this CD is poised for major exposure and acceptance in an otherwise cluttered music industry.

The CD features full art work and professional packaging unlike many indie artists. The label, Spiralight, has really pulled out all the stops in quality indie music distribution. I hope to see it grow as well.

All in all, Uplift Drift is a valued addition to any CD collection regardless of musical taste, but especially to those of us who enjoy good electronic music!

About the Artists

Nate Borofsky, Doris Muramatsu, and Ty Greenstein of the modern folk trio Girlyman scheduled the group's first rehearsal for September 11, 2001. Doris and Ty, who met in the second grade, had recently abandoned their former project as a duo; their friend Nate had just moved to New York after four solo years on the Boston music scene. When all three suddenly found themselves living in the same Brooklyn apartment, it seemed only natural to combine their talents into a new group. According to Nate, the rehearsal was quickly forgotten, but the events of September 11 helped shape the trio's vision: "It brought us in touch with our own mortality. We realized that we wanted to have fun, to do what felt right to us, and to not take ourselves too seriously. We started out by calling ourselves Girlyman."

Maybe it's this mix of earnestness and humor that has audiences nationwide falling in love with Girlyman, or maybe it's just that their soaring three-part harmonies are unlike anything you've ever heard. Maybe it's their folk-pop-bluegrass sound—something like Nickel Creek meets the B-52's, where the members switch off songwriting duties, lead vocals, and a range of instruments—or maybe it's the catchy, often haunting melodies. Either way, Girlyman is on a roll. After the group won an Independent Music Award for their debut CD Remember Who I Am, Amy Ray (one of the contest's judges) decided to sign them to her indie label Daemon Records. When the Indigo Girls invited Girlyman to join them on the road, the as-yet unknown opening act received standing ovations and sold so many CDs that the label had to make an emergency shipment...and when those sold out, another.

Since then, the buzz about Girlyman has grown to a low roar. Since signing with Daemon, Girlyman has appeared on internationally syndicated radio shows like Mountain Stage and has received dazzling reviews in dozens of national and regional publications. The trio's robust 2004 festival season included appearances at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the Boston Folk Festival, and the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, where Girlyman was voted "Most Wanted to Return."

Exceptional songwriting, vocal, arranging talent in a small group........2007-07-09

This Little Star CD is one of the most enjoyable discoveries I've made lately. The songs are from the heart and head. The arrangements of instrumentation are very tasty. Nice use of mandolin and guitar - maybe the most subtle vocal backing instrumentation I've heard in a long time. All of that exists to give space for very tight vocal harmonies that work well in every song. All cuts are a pleasure, but in my estimation the particularly notables are: "I Wonder Where You've Gone", "Genevieve", "I Know Where You Are", and "This Is Me". Girlyman are vocalists first and foremost and I'm thankful for that.

Fabulous group, superb CD.......2007-04-02

Just got back from Northampton, MA concert. Sat through 2 sets. College crowd, banter appropriate to crowd, talented trio of musicians (all multi-instrumental), compelling music, great harmony...no, GREAT harmony. They position themselves as folk artists, and while this isn't folk the way this sixtysomething remembers it, I see their intent and they succeed at redefining the genre. Little Star loaded with quixotic themes, solid selections from 1 to 12. Just make sure you get to #12 -- it's a gem!

Such a wide range of music types on one cd, everyone will like something. Most people will like them all. Indigo Girls are still my favorite, but Girlymans harmonies are "3" times better.

I saw Girlyman in concert with Dar Williams and let me tell you they stole the show...even though they weren't the mainliner band. I absolutely love this CD! It always give me chills to hear how well their voices harmonize. I'd definately love to see them again. You can't go wrong with this cd.

I have seen Chris perform twice, everytime she plays she captivates her audience and wills a sense of calm. Her voice alone is enough to buy the cd, but the passion that lies under the surface is astounding, evoking images of torn lovers reminiscing about times past, silos full of hay and passionate love. Stupendous Songwriting and Stunning Voice.......2005-07-09

If you're a fan of singer/songwriters along the lines of Patty Griffin, Cheryl Wheeler, Lucinda Williams and Elyza Gilkyson, then there's a fairly good chance that you will rejoice in the music of Chris Pureka. This New England-based folkie combines lyrical songwriting ability with an emotionally expressive (and thoroughly husky) voice, drawing you in with her simple homespun songs about heartache, happiness and the change of the seasons. Drenching the songs in the imagery of her surroundings, Pureka creates a soundtrack for East Coast travels, evoking some to compare "Driving North" to Bruce Springsteen's early '80s masterpiece "Nebraska." On gorgeous ballads like "Unwelcome" and "3 a.m.," she nails matters of the heart, while on driving, insistent tunes like the haunting "Silo Song" and "Reprieve," she does the same with a ferocity that will instantly capture your attention. Listen to any of those tunes (not to mention "Burning Bridges" or the urgently soulful "Porch Songs") and try not to instantly fall in love with Pureka's music. In fact, I dare you.

This album is beautiful. Pureka's melodies invoke wonder and awe at how someone as young as she is can be so talented and able to express emotion in such a raw, powerful way. Her voice is an amazing instrument.

Horror strikes with a first glance at the cover of this soundtrack album from Sylvester Stallone's race-car drama Driven: could the likes of Stallone, Burt Reynolds, and Kip Pardue (who?) actually be performing these tunes? Fortunately, the presence of movie-star names up front only denotes misguided art direction or an ego trip on the part of "co-executive soundtrack producer" Stallone. The disc instead proves to hold a smorgasbord of overdramatic tracks chosen for maximum multidemographic penetration. In addition to over-the-top pop-country from Curb artists LeAnn Rimes, Tim McGraw, and Jo Dee Messina, there's a misbegotten Matchbox 20/Chili Peppers fusion by Tantric, the Brit-dance-pop of Rob Dougan, and, what's this, an actual worthwhile cut by Hank Williams III that's more country-punk than anything on his excellent debut. Schlocky songwriter Diane Warren's spirit is the guiding one, but her "Soon" (by Rimes) and "I Wanna Get Back with You" (Mary Griffin) are totally outcheesed by awful covers of "For the Love of Money" and "Break On Through" by respective no-names Rare Blend and Steve Holy tacked onto the CD's end. They make the prospect of a Gina Gershon vocal seem not such a bad idea after all. --Rickey Wright

I love this movie and the music played a major part of it BUT none of my favorites are on the soundtrack. This soundtrack has a country pop feel to it. There are some good uptempo songs but not the best ones from the movie.

This is the album that broke the six year long hiatus that came after the poor reception for Opening of Doors (I'm not counting the 1993 Retrospective). One could tell at that time that Ackerman was looking for a new creative direction. I felt that, in dedicating himself almost entirely to ensemble playing he had somehow lost connection to the instrument that had made all his success possible. I'm sure he would argue with me about that, but 1992 was not a very good year for the musician.

Sound of Wind Driven Rain makes up for all of that. It is a quiet, introspective album full of genuine improvisation. There are other musicians involved, but Ackerman is back in front, taking his time, making music. There's something melancholy to this album (Lion's In The Sky, for example). Perhaps the guitarist is saying goodbye to some things as he moves forward.

There is much that is exquisite here - the delicacy of Unconditional, the gentle flow of the Sheila's Pictures, the melodic work of I Know this River. Ackerman has always preferred the light touch of clear finger work on a smaller guitar to bravura playing, and Sound of Wind Driven Rain is a perfect example of this. It invites the listener to dive deep instead of skimming the surface. Listen also for the use of voices (Sound of Wind Driven Rain, Hawk Circle, and A Child's Song) that presages Ackerman's next effort, Hearing Voices.

I really like this album. It may not be his very best, but it contains a lot of very good music. Like any strong musician, Ackerman takes risks and rarely these fall a bit short. But it is very good indeed to have Will Ackerman back playing at full creative strength.

New Age At It's Worst........2003-02-11

Pablum. Don't get me wrong, Will Ackerman is a tremendous guitarist and talented musician but you'ld never know it from this release. Save your money.

This CD carries Mr. Ackerman's style and sound with minimal accompaniment - very full and natural one can hear the overtones of his guitar. I play this album during Fall and winter seasons as it has that melancholy flavor a fitting backdrop of Seattle. This recording is very clean, clear, natural,full,and melodious. WHEN IS THE FOLLOW UP SCHEDULED TO COME OUT !!!!

LION'S IN THE SKY has an opening which is breathtakingly lovely, and UNCONDITIONAL, I KNOW THIS RIVER, and MR. JACKSON'S HAT are further examples of Ackerman's ability to create a memorable aesthetic experience out of the simplest material. The addition,on some tracks, of Samite (vocal), violins, piano and English horn provides variety without breaking up the satisfying unity of the album, and the guitar parts are always deservedly prominent. Will Ackerman has his critics. 'Nothing happens in his music', they say.'It is pretty enough, but vacuous'. They label it (pejoratively) 'New Age', whatever that means. I can only give a personal response to this.....I think there are weak numbers in the Ackerman discography; rather bland pieces that won't get played that often. And all of his music operates within clear parameters. That said, I have listened, all my life, to many types of music, and can think of special, precious moments: Segovia on nylon strings,Rubinstein playing Chopin, Gieseking playing Debussy, the voice of Kathleen Ferrier, the sitar of Nikhil Banerjee, the piano of Bill Evans, the saxophone of Stan Getz, guitar pieces by John Fahey and David Qualey.To these I must add William Ackerman for those precious moments of uncluttered, simple beauty that occur often in his music, and are so spellbinding that all criticism is redundant. Music to help you journey through life....new age.....old age...any age!!

Below Sunset" is a great album for many reasons. It takes the listener on a journey - a trip that transcends the boundaries of the rock genre without alienating anyone seeking music that has appeal. The melodies, lyrics and performances all work together to create a tapestry that is consistently satisfying throughout all of the songs.

Hypnogaja is able to connect with the listener on a level that is far beyond that which many bands are ever able to achieve, without the air of pretentiousness that usually surrounds such high brow artistry. This album is amazing. I haven't stopped listening to it since I bought it. There are so many songs that I absolutely love, that speak to my soul. The vocals are breathtaking, so full of power, emotion and different colors. The fluid, theatric quality of the arrangements really supports the intelligent lyrics. Aggressive. Melodic. Dramatic. Moody. Breathtaking.

I purchased this album and at first was dissapointed a bit. But as I listened to it it really grew on me, the first three songs are excellent but the real jewell is song 9-trully a great song...........these guys are good, hopefully they will get the recognition they deserve
