About the Artist
Tama Waipara is "a singer’s singer," a term that has been applied to several ground breaking and established artists in the past. Although a relative newcomer, the 26-year old New Zealand native Tama Waipara is indeed worthy of the name.

A graduate of the prestigious Manhattan School of Music with a Master’s degree in music performance, Tama Waipara is a multi-talented singer/songwriter who plays several instruments, including clarinet and guitar. He is also actively involved in theater and was recently featured in an independent documentary for New Zealand’s TV One called Manhattan Maori (Kiwa Productions, filmed by Rhonda Kite and Libby Hakaraia). The inspirational documentary followed five young native New Zealand Maoris (the indigenous people of New Zealand) who relocated to New York City from their small towns to pursue unusual careers.

"It isn’t surprising to me that music would become my life’s passion," says the charismatic performer. "Music is an amazingly influential and vibrant element in my cultural background. The Maori are a naturalistic and genealogically-based indigenous culture steeped in the traditions of our ancestors, or ‘iwi.’ Our culture is based on an ancestral oral tradition rich in chanted song and percussive, rhythmic music. I was always surrounded by music in my home as a child, both traditional and more westernized, like pop, R&B and jazz. I studied the clarinet formally, but I always felt an urgency to sing."

Tama’s vocals are tenuous, dusky, supple, languid and bittersweet possessing a distinctive intonation and "phraseology" inspired by a wealth of legendary song stylists and balladeers like George Benson, Bill Withers, Jimmy Scott, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Kate Bush and Nina Simone –creating a diverse musical blueprint without borders.

"My songs are a hybrid of many elements…contemporary and traditional" reveals Tama. "It’s really important for me to have a full understanding of where I come from musically and culturally because I’m giving a voice to a culture that has been largely silent in the Western world. I’m very blessed. I actually feel like I’m following in a long tradition of Maori musicians from home. People like Mahinarangi Tocker – true artists who still possess the human touch."

Product Description
Triumph of Time is a fluid and eclectic foray into R&B, jazz, classical, Latin rhythms and an amalgam of exotic indigenous music from around the globe. The album is inspired by the writings of turn-of-the-century poet A.C. Swinburne and William Shakespeare. Tama Waipara’s compositions contain an almost instinctual rhythm that combines organic and electronic instrumentation, with his vivid lyrics that seem to evoke a vision that is sublime and enchanted – where thoughts become poetry, poetry becomes verse and verse becomes song.

Triumph of Time is a spellbinding album of ethereal harmonies, roots rhythms and richly evocative lyrics, and could be described as an aural and lyrical journey from this soulful Maori artist (New Zealand).

4 out of 5 stars Interesting music interestingly sung.......2007-02-01

Much of this vocal music is from an era with which I am unfamiliar. It ranges from the work of Hildegarde of Bergen (1098-1179) to Handel (1685-1759); obviously, this album covers much territory! Emma Kirkby displays her virtuosity on this CD. The notes from the CD say that "One of the favorite adjectives used by critics. . .is the word 'celestial.'" At a later point, the notes speak of Kirkby further: "There is a freshness, an openness, an honesty about her voice. . ."

Some comments on works randomly selected.

Monteverdi's "Confitebor tibi, Domine." Here, Kirkby displays a clean light voice. She exhibits a spirited "Gloria Patri" with some spare but interesting ornamentation.

Campion's "Now hath Flora robbed her bowers." This cut shows off to good effect the agility in her voice.

John Dowland, "Flow not so fast, ye fountains." Here is displayed her smooth voice; her singing flows smoothly from one note to the next. There is a poignancy in her singing on this piece.

Guillaume de Machaut, "Foy porter." She treats the redoubtable de Machaut well; his works are some of the best of his time. This is smoothly song and does his work justice.

Hildegarde of Birgen, "Columba aspexit." This is the oldest composition on this CD by far. The work is spare, but well sung. There is a hypnotic quality to the work and Kirkby sings it well.

Lawes, "The Lark." Again, nice agility of her voice is displayed.

Other compositions on this CD are by Purcell, J. S. Bach, Sigismondo d'India, and Handel.

All in all, a nice sampling of the work of Emma Kirkby. I was not much familiar with her work before listening to this CD, but I am delighted that I did purchase this work.

5 out of 5 stars The marriage of skill and magic.......2007-01-12

Ms. Kirby's voice is limpid, exquisitely pitched, strong, and yet beautifully refined. Her command of her voice is extraordinary, with phrasing, delicate embellishments and what I think are some vocal cadenzas, all showing the skill and craft of an artist who has brought her artistry to its highest state. But she makes her artistry sound so easy, so natural: nothing of bravura, nothing forced here. The selections are wonderfully chosen; together, they give us the whole range of early to late Baroque, in every mood. Each listening refreshes the spirit. What an artist!

5 out of 5 stars There is no such thing as too much Emma Kirkby.......2002-07-16

The only defect in this disk is that it isn't a three or four disk set. Some people don't appreciate her beautiful voice and I feel sorry for them. I first heard her voice live in a concert here in Ann Arbor in December of 1980 and she stunned me. The memory of her beautiful voice still lives in my mind and heart.

Well, this disk gives us 18 selections from a number of different composers from the Baroque. Every one of them is a treasure and has its own charms. I can't pick a favorite, but I can say that each of these pieces show off her voice and singing style in different ways.

Yes, I wish she had included more Purcell and something even nicer than what we have on track 3, but what would I give up? Well, that is where I say we need this to have been a two or three disk collection.

You won't go wrong with this wonderful disk!

4 out of 5 stars emma's pure and magical voice........2000-10-16

This cd shows Emma's versatility as a Baroque and early music performer. Her pure voice matches the music so well. I really enjoy the song "You meaner beauties of the night." This is only one among many cd's which shows Emma's great voice. I highly recommend the Emma Kirkby collection.

4 out of 5 stars Voice of an Angel!.......1999-07-20

One of the most beautiful angelic voice in the world! But I don't think this collection shows her best recording pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music beautifully packaged.......2006-03-23

Given his homely looks and bad luck with women, Zemlinsky somehow wrote some absolutely GORGEOUS music. This cd on EMI is a perfect example.

You really can't go wrong with ANY Zemlinsky, as far as I'm concerned. He composed some lush, romantic orchestral music that includes his symphonies, along with some great choral music, and some very original and clever chamber works. Get all of his stuff!

This particular cd is as beautiful to listen to as the cd jacket and elaborate multi-page booklet are to look at. My favorite here is "Ein Tanzpoem", which I previously knew only as the ballet music to "Das Glaserne Herz". Great great music, exceptionally well played and recorded.

One would do well to pay full price for a cd of this caliber (as I once did!); but I can't believe the "used CD" prices on this item! Pick up this wonderful cd, and make yourself a deal that you will not regret.

Then allow yourself to melt into the fantasy and colors of this special music....

I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 9.2/10; Performance = 9/10; Production = 9/10; CD length = 10/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 9.2 ("4-1/2 stars")

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent is the word.......2003-04-01

For anyone seeking to explore Handel beyond his most popular works (Messiah, Royal Fireworks Music, Water Music), it would be hard to beat this collection of 30 short pieces from many sources, forming a generously filled (78:46) CD of splendid music, and demonstrating why Handel was a great and major composer, and a revered and beloved musical figure in his lifetime.

These recordings were made in the St. James Church, Great Packington, Warwickshire, England, in September, 1969, and originally released on two Columbia LPs, in 1970 and 1972. I bought and grew fond of them then, and I'm happy to see them available again on a budget-priced CD. The music here, entirely instrumental, is "culled for the most part from the operas and oratorios that were the bread-and-butter of Handel's work," to quote the liner notes. This music celebrates the grand, the impressive, the ceremonial, the magnificent side of Handel; the disc is well named. If this CD has a fault, it is that there is too much of grandeur, of splendor, of the stately (there are no less than eleven marches), and too little of the intimate, the introspective, the quiet, the meditative; it makes no attempt to strike a balance.

The engineering is good, if not exceptional; while the sound does not provide the ultimate degree of clarity and focus (not unusual in recordings made in churches), it is smooth and pleasing; these recordings carry their years honorably and wear well. Biggs's role here is a modest, supporting one (the two brief concertos included are not for organ): he plays organ continuo and occasional passages of accompaniment or decoration. His instrument is the Great Packington organ on which Handel himself performed, but it is not prominently displayed. Overall I cannot fault the idiomatic, engaging, alternately spirited or stately performances of Groves, the Royal Philharmonic, and Biggs.

These recordings predate the obsession with period instruments and the efforts to recreate the conditions of performance heard in Handel's day; they are old-fashioned, full-blooded "modern" performances on modern instruments. I find them thoroughly satisfying, and the sonorities and tonal balances more pleasing to my ears than those of period-instruments ensembles. But period-instruments purists may want to be warned away; they, however, probably will not be drawn to this kind of free-ranging anthology in the first place.

If you like baroque instrumental music, I think you'll find this CD pretty hard to resist.

5 out of 5 stars The Magnificent Mr Handel.......2000-01-23

A superb recording - it simply has to be as it was recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by the great Sir Charles Groves.

A wonderful introduction to one of the great great composers - even if you have never heard his works other than the Royal Fireworks and the Water Music this will really get you going. Lots of small snippets for the beginner and yet wonderful for all Handel enthusiasts such as me.

Wonderful for putting in your personal stereo and walking the dogs to! I doubt if Mr Handel would have entirely have approved. Very good also if you are down or tired - it perks you up.

Superb CD - a wonderful experience - nerve tingling

4 out of 5 stars The Magnificent Mr. Handel.......2000-01-01

I have owned the two record set of this CD that I purchased in the early eighties. They are both well worn. This was simply the best Handel sampler I could find. And now that I own the CD - I can listen two the same tracks that were on the original recording.

This is definitely a must have for all Handel admirers. The playing is strong and inspired, and the choices for the various tracks are among the best I have hear in thirty years of Handel collecting. If you don't believe me, just sample the first track "The Entree for Alceste." It will knock your socks off!

Best of all, there are over thirty tracks of music on a CD...

        HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

        5 out of 5 stars Blissful music.......2006-04-12

Handel's "The Gods Go A-Begging" is one of my favorites. I have heard this conducted by Gardiner which is slightly different, but I dont believe it is available. This piece of music was unavailable for purchase for so many years, and I only could hear it when I requested it on my local classical radio station. So worth having. It absolutley speaks to my heart - as does most Bach music.

        4 out of 5 stars Great music--poor quality recording!.......2005-01-25

These orchestral suites by Handel are hard to find. I have a cassette tape of them conducted by Yo Yo Mah but I can't find any CD of this recording. I feel a little abashed about liking this music so much because it employs a larger orchestra than Handel ever dreamed of--they're a bit over the top. But I really like them, especially "Gods Go A'Begging." This recording, however, is very old and sounds like a 78rpm record. I give it 4 stars simply because this music is hard to find.
