Riot on the radio.......2006-01-02
Britpop is not dead. Not since 94/95 has there been a resurgence in British indie rock bands and The Dead 60s are a fine example of a new indie band. The three singles in the album are the most noticeable; Loaded Gun, Ghostfaced Killer and (the excellent) Riot Radio. Loaded Gun is a great example of The Dead 60s using guitar work typical of an indie band, but having a jamming beat underneath it. Ghostfaced Killer sounds like a Kaiser Cheifs' song, with its catchy lyrics and tune, but without the woahhh before the chorus. Again, a ska beat is used underneath it, similiar to the ska/indie of Madness. If Ghostfaced Killer is catchy, Riot Radio is addictive. The first song on the album and the best, shows what a great new guitar band The Dead 60s are, with a chorus that you pick up instantly.
The rest of the songs are not without merit: A Different Age, although only 93 seconds long, is about as urgent as a song can get, with a rapid bassline. You're Not The Law is reminiscent of the post-punk era, a song that wouldnt sound of place in a Clash lineup. Similiar to this is Horizontal, urgent and slightly punk sounding. A couple of the songs on the album drag, with Soul Survivor being the only song I didn't like.
Overall, definitely get the album if you like Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party or Hard-Fi (who are extremely similiar to these).
On a side note, The Dead 60s are amazing live, especially with Riot Radio. If you like live indie music, go to one of their gigs.

Album Description
Inspired improvisation and compelling rhythms, created by piano, small orchestra, and sometimes a drum and hand clapping, characterize these performances, which Lord invader (Rupert Westmore Grant, 1914-1962) recorded for Moses Asch in the 1940s and 1950s. Whether recounting events in Trinidad, describing his experiences in new York city, performing traditional songs, or criticizing American racism, Lord Invader combines rhythms and ideas in his unique calypsonian fashion. Thirteen of the twenty-six tracks are released here for the first time. Extensive annotations by John Cowley include lyrics, bibliography, and discography. 73 minutes, 32 page booklet. Compiled and annotated by John Cowley.
Customer Reviews:
Pepsi not Coke.......2002-03-17
Well, you probably have Rum and Coca Cola somewhere in your collection if you are a Calypso fan. So this recording is a nice, breezy supplement to your Lord Invader discography. It's really quite a crisp and clever collection of Invader's best including a mischeivous number on covert beach excursions with a girl who'll do anything for Pepsi Cola, say what is it with Invader and cola anyway? I'm beginning to think the black bubbly is a naughty analogy for something. There's a great number about getting lost on the New York subway and another misadventure involving Invader's hapless sojourn in a tranvestite bar in Germany. Boy that Invader sure gets around. There's lots of Kalinda chants in between the more dolled-up numbers, making for a nice tension between an unplugged Carnival Monday sound versus the more crafty favorites like Tied Tongue Baby and Sly Mongoose.

A Sincere Sensation.......2006-12-16
Are you serious with this? Take Mylo, subtract the vocals, occasionally mix in some Fleetwood Mac samples, sprinkle in some volume distortion, and prepare. Prepare for what? To dance your nude little fanny off.
Buy on sight.
Who Loves Linus?.......2006-12-02
I actually found this album by surprise, I had no idea about neither the artist nor the album, but when I started listen to it I realized it was fantastic. There seems to be very little info about him on the net aswell, but what I came through was that he's a friend of Mylo and they're on the same label. This album sounds exactly like Mylo actually, At first I thought it was Mylo in disguise. Both are electro artist with a love for 80's retro sound, both love sampling old songs and making them catchy dancable uptempo's and bot seems to be from the UK. Mylo's "Destroy Rock N Roll" from last year was In My Oppinion the best electro album of 2005, and Linus Loves "Stage Instruder" is probably the best of 2006. Amazing I found this album by surprise, cause It's excellent.
"Stage Intruder" is not the average electro album. Just like Mylo's album it got something for everyone. Retro-Dance, Electro, House, Commercial/Non Commercial, Vocals/Instrumentals. This is what makes it fun to listen to. First song "The Love" is a House song. A voice say "And I feel the Love" together with soulish music and horns, it samples Marvin Gays's "Heavy Love Affair". Typical House music, almost like Junior Jack. But this song is quite diffrent, cause no other song sound like it. "Waterfall" is a cover/sample of 10CC's song with the same name. But just like Kanye West they are speeding up both the song and the vocals, and the result is a really catchy dance-pop song. Third song is pure electro, it's called "Rock Chic" and it samples Siouxsie and The Banshees song "Israel". The title is quite suitable, since Siousxsie was one of the toughest Rock Chick's of the 80's. "One More Chance" is another retro-pop song. A voice saying "One More Chcance" is feautured briefly but for the most part it's a retro song without lyrics. "VH1" Funny title huh? samples Fleetwood Mac's "Big Love" and reminds me alot of the structure of Mylo's "In My Arms". This song could become a club hit if it was released on single. Next song is called "Nightmusic" and is incredibly catchy. It got this electro beat which is very dancable. It's an Electro/House song and one of the best.
Halfway through the album, there is a song called "The Terrace", it samples Stevie Nick's "Stand Back". What's the fixation with Fleetwood Mac anyway?. Interesting thing is that He already released a single for this song in 2004 called "Stand Back" that feautured vocals and was much faster then Stevie's original song. This one is without any vocals, although it's one of the album's finest moments just the same. "Stage Invader" is a happy electro song, simular to "Nightmusic", for Electro-fans this is the maximum. Next song is a mix between electro and retro, It's called "Victoria Principle" and sounds like it's sampling some arcade video game. Undeniably catchy with all it's sound effects. "Hold Me Closer" gives me a feeling of Deja Vu. It's got a simular beat to Mylo's "Musclecar". It's apparent they must have worked together somehow. The song itself is a meliodic Electro-Pop song. "Hot & Wrong" is yet another arcade game song. Love the bass and the samples. "Baby I'm Amazed" is once again a great song. This song could actually have worked as an R&B song. Considering that many R&B producers use electro sound these days. It's very Retro-Electo and a good closer.
Overall, few good Electro albums are made a year, few good dance albums at all, But this one is almost perfect and it got somnething for everyone. If you liked Mylo's album you will love this one. I'm really surprised that nothing was said or heard by this until I eventually found it by surprise. However, This is the best Electro album of 2006. If you like Mylo, well, this is just as good. Must have.

Album Description
Having studiously avoided each other for most of the 90s these two large predators of the underground rock scene made a simple choice between escalating hostilities spiraling inevitably into mutual annihilation and the prospect of a relaxing week getting to know each other round at Sally Timms' apartment with a bunch of cool looking antique mikes and a steam powered pro-tools system.
The resulting recording session saw Sir Dickie and Fanglord swapping instruments, lyrics and outer garments to produce a collection of songs that shift the goalposts and subvert all the neat genre boundaries that have differentiated their sorry careers in the past. Sir Dark Invader Vs. The Fanglord is full of haunting folkish melodies and intermittent bursts of noisy art rock. Assistance is meted out by Pine Valley Cosmonaut John Rice (on guitar & mandolin) and Steve Goulding on occasional drum-kit.

Good, if you're into that kind of thing........2007-01-03
A little rough around the edges, but a good CD nonetheless. It was catchy and well-produced. Nothing much else to say. I like Buckner's "Dents & Shells" more.
