Shadow of Breakfast.......2006-08-09
"Breakfast In America" is without a doubt one of the all-time classic albums. Beyond that and "Crime Of The Century", it's easy to let the rest of Supertramp's work go unnoticed. That's what happened with me. I've been listening to Crime and Breakfast for years while neglecting the rest of their catalog. My bad! I've recently picked up several other Supertramp albums, including "Famous Last Words".
Clearly, Supertramp were trying to distinguish FLW as something other than simply a follow-up to the blockbuster Breakfast. Although the sound is unmistakably Supertramp, it's obvious there was an effort to strike out in different directions to accomplish something that could build upon their previous success.
Check out "Waiting So Long" for some foreshadowing of the following Supertramp album, "Brother Where You Bound" with it's rich orchestration and trademark build-ups and the '50s doo-wop influenced "My Kind of Lady" for an indication of these changes. Of course, there is still the classic Supertramp with songs like "It's Raining Again" and "Crazy" (which could easily have ended up on Breakfast In America based on its sound).
Despite hiding in the shadow of Breakfast In America, Famous Last Words is still a great album in the Supertramp tradition. Consider it essential for the Supertramp fan.
The end of a era a great CD.......2006-06-14
They were at their peak as a band because everything in this disk is impeccable, you can find pop, ballads and those songs that made you hang on to Supertramp since there was something in there that just trancends...
simply brilliant.......2006-04-21
I remember first playing ...Famous Last Words..., around the pool table one cold, dark night at boarding school as a teenager. I clearly recall my initial thoughts, that Put on your old brown shoes was the only Supertramp track that I didn't like, out of every track of every album to date. A good few listens later, it became one of my favourite tracks of one of my all time favourite albums. This album is simply brilliant, with the last two songs, Waiting so long, and the prophetic Don't leave me now finishing off a complete masterpiece with total awe. I literally come out in goose bumps as I turn up the volume to appreciate, particularly these last two tracks, it to their full glory.
If Roger Hodgson had to leave Supertramp, as he unfortunately did, he could not have left on a higher note.
You Won't Regret Owning This, Supertramp's Last Classic . . .......2006-02-27
Even though "Famous Last Words" came out after Breakfast in America, with similarities in commercial pop songs like "It's Raining again", it features classics that no one should miss, such as "Know Who You Are, C'est Le Bon, Don't Leave Me Now". This is Supertramp's last album that belongs into the "Best" category, along with "Supertramp, Crime of the Century, Even in the Quietest Moments, Crisis What Crisis, and Breakfast in America".
Supertramp is Melodious.......2006-02-23
Not too many bands come through with their originality and talent like Supertramp can. And I will always remember this band's unique flare for mellowing me whenever I need to rethink a hard day. Their music plays on even after the cd player is done and we are left with a profound - yet comfortable silence. I would love to see them in concert just once -- outside where the earth and sky surround Supertramp's fine musicians. I'm sure they have ties with nature and all it's surprises. Jennifer

Album Description
Two CD set packed with hits, rarities and album tracks from the '80s duo. The complex pop of Tears For Fears provided an antidote to the excesses of the UK and US hit parades in the middle '80s. Their dark, brooding nature and boundlessly catchy material made the West Country duo some kind of anti-Wham! Their success was enormous, spreading to America where they were to enjoy two No.1 singles and a chart-topping album!. 35 tracks including 'Change', 'Mad World', 'Sowing The Seeds Of Love', 'Shout', 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World' and many more. Spectrum.

TFF Hits & Rare Tracks.......2007-06-28
I give it 4 stars because it contains more "B" sides then hits, I would recommend the "Gold" album first & this one second. For some odd reason they left off "Pale shelter". They might have been wise to put that one on either in its original 7" format (which is far different then any album version) or deleted a few "B" sides & added a few more great album tracks. Nevertheless, it is a nice package & could have used a third disc & liner notes with more information on ALL the tracks. Search "Judemac Forever" on msn.

Customer Reviews:
love Al.......2007-01-18
Famous Last Words is a welcome addition to my Al Stewart collection. He has depth of meaning and humor. My teenagers really enjoyed the Hippopotamus Song even though this is not their usual style of music. Trains begins with a meloncholy sound reminiscent of his early work and ends with deep sadness. If you like this, you probably will also like Songs from the Cellar. Enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
As good as Year of the Cat & Time Passages.......2006-08-18
15 years after leaving the Top 40, Al Stewart put out an album at least the equal of his two landmark albums of the '70s. He continues to sing about history, geography, and politics. He writes memorable melodies and the arrangements vary widely so each song is distinctive. His lyrics are always thoughtful and occasionally humorous, and on this he continues his modern tradition of two novelty songs (Genie on a Tabletop, Hipposong). Trains is a flawless composition and performance with a sad theme but optimistic ending. If you have YOTC and TP and are looking for a more modern Al Stewart album just to see what's up these days, then you ought to buy two albums - this is not quite as good as 2005's Beachful of Shells. But if you liked Year of the Cat and Time Passages, you will like this album too.
Certainly not Al Stewart's Last words! .......2006-06-23
Since this Album was published, Al Stewart has produced another excellent album entitled "Beach Full of Shells". There was also the Wine Album "Down in the Cellar" This less remembered work should be checked out for a few recordings that are worthy of mention. "Trains" the song most often requested at Al Stewart concerts in Europe is an excellent piece but is difficult because it is word filled and long. Even Mr. Stewart has trouble remembering his lines to this song during concerts. There are other brightly tuned works, perhaps one of the best being "Don't Forget Me" which reminds you of his hit "Song on the Radio" from the Time Passages Album with the inclusion of significant Saxophone melody. I agree with others here that "Peter on the White Sea" may be one of Al's less memorable songs. But how can we rate this one overall? What is it's place in Mr. Stewart's long career? Well if "Past, Present & Future" is still the greatest and "Year of the Cat", "Modern Times" and "Time Passages" closely following, I would put this one behind "Beach Full of Shells", "Between the Wars" and "Down in the Cellar" but above "Last Days of the Century".(too rock oriented, that one!)It is a good album to listen to and quite a few cuts are good. Is it worth buying? As a fan of Al since '74, yes, but a used copy is prefered.
Uneven and Inconsistent - and that's being charitable........2005-12-05
Two and a half might me more on the money, but I feel this is closer to a 2 than to a 3.
While not without merit, most of this album is substandard Al Stewart. With the exception of "Trains" the writing is far below what we've come to expect. Famous Last Words does have its moments, the previously mentioned "Trains", and "Charlotte Corday" most notably. Overall however, there is no continuity here. Some tracks suffer from over-production - too much synth, and an attempt to be danceable. Was Al making a last ditch effort at pop success and getting back on the radio? It has the feel of a "Best of" album with many different styles represented, except that there's nothing here outside of "Trains" that would be even close to worthy of appearing on an Al Stewart "Best Of".
Al Stewart has many incredible recordings - but this is not one of them. I would put it in the lower tier of Al's catalog, just above the dreadful Russians & Americans, and just below Orange.
Get this Album for Trains and Charlotte Corday, get what you can out of Necromancer and Trespasser, and hit the CD skip button over Peter on the White Sea, which may be the worst the song Al's ever recorded.
Bravo, Al !.......2005-07-19
When I first popped in FAMOUS LAST WORDS in my player I knew it would be one of Al's best, and indeed it is. This CD is truly entertaining, especially in the evening hours with a sunset, I've found. It hits all of the right notes and leaves us wishing for more. There is one song that didn't seem to do it for me, and that was "Peter on the White Sea". The song is merely good but doesn't seem to have the punch the rest of the album has. "Genie on a Tabletop" and "Feel Like" are great songs to sing along when you are driving because of their fun energy. "Like Louie Armstrong playing trumpet on the judgement day" (from Genie) is probably my favorite line from an Al Stewart song. "The Hippo Song" may have been written for one of his daughters, but it deserves songcraft credit. The use of spanish guitars is one of Al's trademark sounds included here, but alto sax seemed to be missing. No matter, the album holds up quite well as it is. I want to give this cd a 4 1/2 star rating because it is better than just a 4 star rating. Ross Hogarth was an excellent choice for producer for this recording, and I do wish Al would do another with him. I truly hope this work will acheive gold status(if not platinum).
"A trail that runs forever..through a forest of evergreen".......2005-07-06
If your into history, Al Stewart is definitely the singer/songwriter worth getting. He is one of a handful a truly good songwriters in the business today and he's not a bad guitar player either. This is a nice transition with Al showing his playful side. There are some really nice tunes on this album...suprising that some of these weren't played more on the radio. He doesn't completely leave behind his trademark historical song writing...there is the reflective 'Peter on the White Sea', the bitter sweet 'Charlotte Corday' and the railroad compilation 'Trains'.
This album, while not his greatest, is still a fun listen and has music that is well worth adding to any Al collection.
