solid.......2000-08-27
ok, so billy childish has recorded who knows how many records and you're wondering where to start given that an output that large has got to have clunkers here or there. yeah, that plus the fact that the man seems to have no sympathy for those poor buggers without record players -- you'd think he'd be on the side of the poor but no matter -- and so you don't know that the records you've overheard your buddies playing have what you heard on cd or what. well, if that's your situation and you're looking for a solid start but the record you heard way back when doesn't look like anything in the offing at amazon, then i'd say "beach bums must die" is a good start. i for one wish that they offered that record with the gun on the cover with the epitaph "ripping off the stars of yesterday, influencing the stars of tomorrow" but it looks like they don't and this record is very solid billy c. given what i've heard of his output. for me the cd really starts going around song 8, the best tunes being "headcoat on backwards", "the case of the thundering dunderhead", "give me that apple, eve", "she's got a strange attractor" and their cover of chuck berry's "jaguar and thunderbird". a couple of years ago i saw them at s.o.b.'s and the crowd wacked out when they hit strange attractor. good stuff.
if, on the other hand, you've never heard any headcoats before and you're wondering whether this is a good place to start, i'd say yeah. the headcoats are kin to the gories, the mummies and any number of punk rock groups that build off their 60s garage band predecessors. but they're in the top of their league. recommended.

Good for a sunny drive to the beach.......2006-06-22
I've got lots of cds, including but not limited to hed kandi, miguel migs, the afterdark series, bargrooves....
This cd stands out as one of the better cds. I like to listen to this more then some of the others. After buying so many cds of this type of music, it's starting to seem like it's the same groove over and over.... because honestly I have more music then I could listen to in a year (if I were to listen to new things all the time). I like other cds, but this cd has a special groove which really brings out that early morning sunny-day 'i wanna go to the beach/I'm already at the beach' kind of feel. I think this cd would be really good for the morning... and the evening.... but for mid-day and night I would look for something a little more ... upbeat i guess. I also like mauro picotto and heavy club
I think this is a good buy though, great date music, and awesome relaxing chill music. It's a good cd with quality songs.

Beautiful Nylon.......2002-10-12
Anyone who's ever listened to one of Steve Hackett's "rock" albums would not be surprised to hear this tremendous work. The "classical" side of Hackett's phenomenal talent is apparent in every album of his. This one may be the best to date in that genre. I was introduced to nylon classical guitar at a very yound age, but only fell in love with the instrument after hearing Hackett play. If you love it too, buy this CD. If you don't--even if you could never imagine listening to an album of acoustic guitar--buy this CD anyway and marvel at the performance. Or give it as a gift.
4 stars but there are still some questionables.......1999-06-01
I have long been a fan of Steve Hacketts work. In this album a collection of short descriptive works concerning Shakespeare's famous play, Steve Hackett's melodious music is some of the best in the classical guitar field. There are some gripes I have though, which warrant a 1 star deduction. Steve uses too much rolling of the chords which serves only to break up the melody. Secondly, I don't know the full story behind this one--it may even be listed somewhere on the CD jacket, but there are melodies, passages etc, even whole sections which I believe were written for orchestra, and recorded by someone else about a decade ago. ( I will not use the word "P" word as again I don't know the full story).
Steve Hackett demonstrates why he is the man.......1999-05-18
One of the most phenomenal classical albums I've ever heard. I never tire of it, particularly tracks 12+, which take on a profound, contemplative tone. I recommend this to anyone who appreciates excellence in songwriting.
This is beautiful music.......1999-04-22
This CD is a classical guitar concerto written by Steve Hackett. The guitar work on this CD is simply magnificent. Mr. Hackett makes the guitar sound like a pure work of art. I have never had this CD on for background music when it did not evoke a comment from the casual listener. For those of you who love Steve's rock work I would say listen to this CD to see the other side of him. He is truelly a guitar virtuoso. Words cannot do justice to the beauty of the music on this CD, it must be heard.

Great track.......2005-06-22
Orbital should have done more film work. The Octane soundtrack was decent, the track from the XXX soundtrack was good, The Saint was a good song, and there's this, the theme from the movie The Beach. Probably their most 'commercial' track, it features a great melody and an interesting use of DiCaprio's lines from the movie. This has an edit, and an extended version (the version on the soundtrack runs 6:49, this one is 8 minutes exactly) with more stuff (including a nice little buildup in the middle that's my favorite part of the whole song). There's also a strange track called Doctor, Look Out, which has since been put on the 2-disc version of The Altogether. I would recommend this as I think the long version is better than the soundtrack version.
do not consider.......2003-11-30

Customer Reviews:
Are you a loyal Orbital pawn?.......2002-02-02
Orbital is an aquired taste. Personally, I LOVE Orbital, and this is my 8th Orbital CD to add to my collection. Released sometime between "Middle Of Nowhere" and "The Altogether," this import-only CD single is pretty nice. It features a radio edit and full-length of "Beached," a tune with a heavy reverb synth and poignant pitch shifts. There's a strange breakbeat if you listen closely into the background, but the front beat is functional and matches perfectly with the synth and vocals. A decent Orbital song and a must for collectors. The b-side is "Doctor Look Out," the Doctor Who sample-driven piece also fetured on The Altogether's US 2nd Disc. It has a nice feel to it, and could have easily been the b-side to "Nothing Left" or "Style" (the b-sides to those sounded similar). So it's not an excellent album, but if you're a collector of Orbital and don't mind spending ...($$)on 2 songs plus a radio edit, than go ahead and check it out.
So,so.......2001-10-19
I expected the Beached to be a little better....
Orbital is super, as always.......2000-07-21
Thinking about getting those UK imports but not sure? Imports from Orbital always great, especially this one. A laid back tune, this one is good either loud or soft. Greatly laid out tune by Badalamenti who did the music to the famed ABC drama-thriller "Twin Peaks" from a few years back. Check out his other stuff.
Track one starts off with the radio edit of "beached" and then goes into the long version which is somewhat more progressive than the radio edit, with a little more material to build up to the main melody which is catchy, nonetheless. The third track sounds a lot like Orbital's newer work off of their latest CD, somewhat crazy. However, it does sound similar to their earlier works such as "Orbital-2". Great buy to add to any listener's Orbital collection.

Superb. Absolutely superb........2000-05-03
Badalamenti and Orbital's "Beached." was GREAT. Atypical of Orbital's previous work, this is ten times faster and on the first hearing the music seriously fused with my existence- I felt like getting up and dancing. This needs to be played loud, too. The voice of The Beach's Di Caprio is somewhat haunting as well. "beached" is a hallmark of ambient music, by all means.
