Sasha and his fellow turntable conspirators John Digweed and Paul Oakenfeld have been on impressive winning streaks since the mid- to late '90s, particularly with their increasingly popular and influential Global Underground series. This addition to the cycle, a live set recorded in the Spanish dance-music haven Ibiza, comes close to setting a new standard. Sasha is working solo here, and in addition to showing off his prodigious live mixing skills and inventive use of source material, he creates an undeniable identity for himself. Digweed accomplished the same thing with the masterful Bedrock, but where that record was elegantly light and airy, this one burns with a sharper, more manic energy. Throwing out resolute rhythms and melting house samples bathed in dreamy backdrops, Sasha cuts through dense structures and clever transitions with superhuman alacrity. It does take him a little while, as his use of trance-inducing repetition strays a bit while he establishes a groove on the first disc. Disc 2, however, simply tears into an incredibly danceable vibe. Mixing together melodic snippets and varying moods, from the dark trance of "Fibonacci Sequence" to the ecstatic release of "Xpander" (from his EP of the same name), Sasha mainlines rhythm and creativity through to a satisfyingly exhausted conclusion. --Matthew Cooke

Perfection.......2007-07-07
Quite simply.. Disc 1 is timeless perfection. Best absorbed on a beach, headphones on, when its WAY too hot...
Disc 2 is a bit more cheesy, but best sums up the dance music trends at the time..
ENJOY.
NB: don't bother with other mixes if you didn't enjoy this.. its the best DJ in the world, at the top of his game, during the peak of the electronic music scene, at the dance music capital of the world.
MAGIC!
You are going to love this one!.......2007-06-04
I played this CD for months and months. It transitions nicely from one tune to the next. It is great for driving, exercising, dancing etc...lively, wonderful beat, all excellent selections..its a soundtrack for your own mental movie..buy it..youll be glad you did!
Surviving The Test of Time.......2007-03-08
The release date of this popular Global Underground release was 1999. This is right around the time when progressive house and progressive trance genres really started to come into their own. Very fitting that this compilation was modeled after a set performed in the Meca of all electronica venues...Ibiza. It was very "cutting-edge" for the release date and includes Sasha's very own Xpander on disc 2.
Due to electronica's ever-evolving sound, it is hard to find compilations that don't get tiresome after a few years. In my opinion, Global Underground 013:Ibiza is one of these gems. Disc 1 is one of my personal favorites under the Global Underground label. Eight years later and I never tire of it.
Disc 2 is a little more outdated. I don't like the track selection as much, and have a hard time listening to the whole disc in one sitting. Still enjoyable though.
Disc 1 get 5/5 stars and disc 2 4/5 stars.
This compilation is worth possessing for disc 1 alone.
Astonishing achievement for Sasha and the subculture.......2006-12-31
Every dog has his day.
Every DJ has his album.
DJ Sasha found his, preliminarily, with Xpander. He rediscovered himself with Involver. But Ibiza remains his greatest achievement to date, and the proof lies within the brilliant music this man has chosen to present to us, the worthy progressive masses. The recipe for success, in this case is rather simple:
1 Quintessential DJ mixed with 1 Quintessential Trance world locale. Blend, mix and refrigerate. Serves millions.
All cuteness aside, however, this is one truly epic album, and perhaps the greatest achievement of the revered Global Underground series; I think Sasha knew what was expected of him with the release of this double-disc following his wildly popular San Francisco set, and he came through in strides. The typical formula for the GU series is this: Disc one, a bit slower, more patience required, beautiful and majestic yet less danceable, with disc two being the harder-hitting, rave-inducing and generally more well-liked disc. In this sense, Sasha's release is hard to compare with other Global Underground releases.
Disc one is DEEP. Perhaps this is foreshadowed by the titles of the first two tracks? Nonetheless, this disc is one beautiful, powerful and spiritual trip into the psyche. I often meditate to this disc; it's that deep. The tracks are so masterfully crafted, chosen and mixed that where I am in the album in terms of track is no longer any concern. The second half of disc one, while equally and fantastic and mesmerizing, rises the bpm a little and pulsates. Sasha displays a split-personality complex on this first disc, all the while making the two halves seem like a perfectly logical whole.
Disc two is less consistent in terms of the intensity of mood, but by all means this does not make it a lesser disc! This disc is every bit as wonderful as the first and I would challenge anyone to dispute this. "Fibonacci Sequence" has to be one of the most strangely wonderful tracks I have ever heard, with the spoken-word sequence itself oozing in and out of the track. The bass, the beat, everything about this 10+ minute introductory track is impeccable. 'Zoe', 'Perception' and 'The Fly' are very dancable and expertly mixed tracks which blend together in preparation for the one and only 'Xpander' - a beautiful addition to any mix, but especially beautiful when placed in the hands of its creator. He proves he knows exactly how to manipulate not only the work of others, but of himself as well.
Perhaps my favorite part of the entire two-disc set is summed up within the last four tracks on the second disc. Beginning with 'Mercury and Solace' and 'Dreamstate (LSG Mix)' (two tracks that have lulled me to sleep on many an occasion due to their delicate beauty) and 'Heaven Scent' (a Bedrock staple track that I happen to love) finalize this aural apex - but with a twist. Junkie XL's 'Future in Computer Hell (Part 2)', curiously inserted in between Dreamstate and Heaven Scent, is one of the most quintessential breakbeat grooves I have heard in a long, long time. It honestly reminds me of 'Rykketid' or 'One Flew Over The Cocoo's Nest' on Zabiela's Utilities.
The music speaks for itself - like true music should. This is the Five-Star Hotel, the Presidential Suite, the finest Russian caviar of progressive trance mixes, and the cream of the Global Underground crop.
As essential for the 21st century as Renaissance - The Mix Collection was for the 1990s.

this IS sasha's masterpiece.......2006-07-24
this guy is an artist in every regard. i truly believe, with the exception of "live at avalon", that every one of his cds is a masterpiece. but if ever there were a "masterpiece", this would be the one that tops the other ones.

Arguably the most famous DJ in the world, circa 1999, and certainly one of the most influential across all fields of music, London mixmaster Paul Oakenfold enjoys his first Global Underground release in America with a two-disc set that goes to the farthest corners of modern dance-club music. Oakenfold (who has remixed and spun for U2 and coproduced the Happy Mondays) obviously has a phenomenal record collection. Using the hues and vibes of Manhattan, Oakenfold weaves together a landmark house set for those who have never heard one. The first disc is smattered with trancey house grooves, with swirls of funk thrown in for good measure, thanks to Solar Stone's "Flood" and an effortless high-energy mix that allows brief recuperative moments before once again taking off à la the segue from Lustral's "Everytime" into Miro's "Paradise." The second disc sees Oakenfold playing around with some spacier jungle flavors, such as Ambrosia's "In Your Arms," before enjoying a breakbeat-fueled journey through Talisman & Hudson's "Leave Planet Earth," then effortlessly easing on into trance-house warmth again with Albion's "Air." New York shows that Oakenfold is certainly one of the smoothest operators behind the decks today. Unfazed by the confusing subgenres of electronica, Oakenfold fondly embraces them all, fashioning sets of rich diversity. As with Global Underground's other releases, this disc is a great starting point for those who wish to dip their feet into club land's musical culture. --Steffan Chirazi
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, but I've heard better.......2007-07-02
Definitely one of my favorite global undergrounds, the track "rescue me" takes me back years ago when I used to travel with my family. That one track, is worth getting the entire album in my opinion. But don't get me wrong, both discs are phenomenal. However, my ears are spoiled-and I've heard better.
as far as Oakenfold's music goes, this is his BEST work...
This Global Underground has been a favorite of mine for many years, so much that I bought another copy(when I lost my original).
A Compilation Worth Owning........2007-03-01
This is Oakenfold's second release underground Global Underground. (the first being Global Underground 004:Oslo).
This 2 disc compilation follows the tone set by his prior Global Underground album released two years prior in 1997. Another eclectic mix ecompassing many genres of electronica. Unlike GU 004:Oslo, this compilation is a little lighter on the drum and bass tracks.
I generally like the first disc over the second disc with the majority of Global Underground compilations. The opposite is true for this album.
Disc 1 is predominantly ambient mixes with trance. I found none of the tracks to be that gripping. Fairly ordinary...none are extraordinary.
Disc 2 starts and ends painfully. These flanking tracks are dreadful, especially track 1. The good news is that every track in between is really good. Mostly trance. Good trance that can be listened to anywhere and anytime with any mood.
Disc 1 gets 3/5 stars. Disc 2 gets 4/5 stars.
-Quintessential-.......2001-02-21
If you dig the way trance just gets into your blood, then this set is a great purchase. I have been listening to this disc set constantly for over a year, yet I never tire of it. Oakenfold artfully layers solid grooves and great effects in tracks that pull you into the music and make you want to dance. The transitions are great, building different moods and inspiring you to play the whole CD. Paul Oakenfold is, by far, my favorite DJ. I appreciate all genre of music, but this one consistently makes it to the top of my favorites pile. Great for clubbing; I also love to listen as I exercise. It is a truly welcome addition to any collection.
Not the best........2001-02-17
This mix is not especially great in any way. He uses a few of the same songs found on his other mixes (Summersault, 3 drives on vinyl, rollercoaster, nautical bodies) which takes some of the flavor away from this 2CD set.
Away from his standard songs, there is nothing worth mentioning, though the mixing is excellent, which is expected of anything Oakenfold. I don't know what it is, but these CD's just don't convey anything to me. The songs don't go together right. This isn't really GU quality. CD2 starts out differently, and I think that's the albums best moment - track1, cd2 sucks, but "Leave Planet Earth," "Composure," and "Air" really go together well to do something new.... he should have built on that and made CD2 something worth listening to all the way through. I hate that Burning Flame song..... I hate any mix that uses it.... Also, the last track on CD2 is completely out of place. It also features Oakey's worst mixing ever. Pathetic. I can't believe Oakey would throw it in there (I mean that literally...that's how it sounds).
Overall, it's not worth buying unless you're collecting all the GU albums, or all of Oakenfold's stuff.
Oakenfold shows his stuff.......2001-01-12
I did not like this CD set first time I heard it, probably because it wasn't loud. This is a very sophisticated trance style that has made this cd set my favorite at the moment. You certainly need to be in the right mood for this one, but when you are, this kicks!

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
With pure, transcendental dance-floor ecstasy, Sasha's patient mixes and cosmic samples on this double-CD set establish him as one of the best DJs on the planet. Finding the twists and turns among the endlessly inventive rhythms and mind-blowing sample transitions here is an essential journey for lovers of trance-techno everywhere. --Matthew Cooke
Amazon.com essential recording
This is the best trance mix of the first half of 1999, at least. Sasha (of Northern Exposure fame) has produced a double-disc set that climbs every house and techno peak while rolling effortlessly along top-quality, luscious trance-techno plateaus. With disc one, think mountains, air, and sweat under clear blue skies, the dreamy trance escapism of DJ Sakin and Friends' "Protect Your Mind" setting the tone. By the time Slickmick's "Lecture" delivers its pumping techno voice, the underlying subliminal metronomic beats have become wholly engaging. Disc two evokes the atmosphere of a great all-night session, and Sasha brings the mix down the hard-stepping edge of trance-techno, as with Mana's "Psionic," and into a hypnotic land of minimalism, illustrated perfectly by the flat beats of Breeder's "The Chain." Generally, the second journey recalls the subterranean feel of the great Berlin nightclubs from years ago. But just to keep things mobile, Breeder's "Twilo Thunder" is fused with the sensibilities of older Jean Michel Jarre material, offering a dreamy breather from the energy. Global Underground's San Francisco is as good a Friday night mix album as you can get. Indeed, if you match this up with a couple of Northern Exposure sets, some friends, and no limits, the hottest club in town could be your place. --Steffan Chirazi

There Has To Be Better Mixes Out There..........2006-11-10
I bought this CD already familiar with the Dance/Trance/Techno scene for years, listened to a few times and never picked it up again. I picked up this CD since it had Tilt's - I Dream (Resurection Remix) - (which is the only track that carries a captivating beat - truly awesome) thinking that the rest of the CD would be just as incredible. Unless your gonna get sloshed or shoot up on something and freak dance to strobe lights amist a booming sound system, don't waste your money on this one. Until I personally decide to do this myself, only then would I rate this a five. Sasha must have better mixes out there that I have not yet discovered, but whatever the case, this CD is a disappointment. Rather than letting this CD uselessly spin in my CD deck, I simply use it as a coaster. I know many will disagree with this review but given the fact that I gave this CD an honest shot, I not writing this as a hater. I simply have not been impressed with this one. This mix carries the same monotonous beat from start to finish. Honestly, there has to be better mixes out there by Sasha... But don't waste your ears on this one.
If you liked other CDs like: Trance Mix USA, BT - Movement In Still Life, ATB - Dj In The Mix, Crystal Method - Vegas & Community Service, any mixes by Dj Micro, Tansport by Paul Oakenfold, Dj Tiesto's In Search of Sunrise, or any Gatecrasher Mix.... This CD may not be the one for you.
ZRODN.......2006-10-26
once again to slow but fast with pitch and bpm off sound rotation. not loud enough no consistent sound or evovled framework that i normally hear from this artist at live raw performances in dance trance genre. i mean this artist is the best but needs to fire the sound or cd production team if you were to hear or see what i see in live performance you kinda wonder why cant anybody bring that brilliance to cd for home use. a lot of good musicians dont have a clue what they are selling to the public because the master copy sounds different from what is being sold and that ofcourse comes from poor planning or bad management team. Dont get me wrong this musician/dj is off the hook but once agian this cd is embarassing and sounds bad i know i can get school kids to blare faster and better beats off a turn table burn it on cd and have all these so called music critics claim that it was the best meshed euphoric sound they have heard , serve the masses nonsense but never claim to understand proper dance format
Awesome.......2006-09-10
From the intro to the last track, these cd's are amazing. CD 2 didn't do it for me like cd1 did, but overall this is how house and trance should be. Not a disappointing album in the least. Plus this is old school from 1999. I like this one better than Ibiza, but that is just preference.
One of the best mix CDs ever.......2006-08-27
I am bias towards Global underground, but they produce the best mix CDs out. Out of all 28 volumes (plus all other GU series) this is the best of them all. Every song fits perfectly into a progressive trance/house set. Starting off trippy with grovy mellow tones and by the end of the second CD thumping trance that stays clear of rythms found on most trace mixes (e.g. tiesto), rather dark samples and basslines.
This CD is just as good as Northern Exposure Expeditions and if you are a GU fan or digweed and sasha fan this this is a must have. There are no exceptions, buy it now!
If you like my advice then try these CDs out from the global underground series:
- Trafik - bullet (my fav. album)
- Steve Lawler - Lights out 3
- Nick Warren - Budapest (11) and Shang hi (28)
- Anthony Pappa - NuBreed
- Sasha - Involver (one of my fav. mixes)
- GU10 - Limited edition 4 disc velvet box
If you only listen to one of the above make sure it's trafik - bullet a great group uner the GUMusic label.
Easily the smoothest mix I have heard from Sasha.......2006-05-26
This cd is so smooth it is almost torture to listen to. Forget Ibiza. That's right you heard me. Because it should be illegal to be able to mix like this. Sweet jesus mary joseph and the F%$@*ng donkey this is good. I s*^%t you not. Check out the transistion from the Intro of the street bums to the platform to the banging naughty guitar riff of solid spaxce business that drifts into the DJ Sakin track that elevates into what for me remains one of the most awe inspiring tracks I have ever hear in my adult regardless of genre and you will understand why they call this guy the man like... This is a true glimpse at what it must feel like when Sasha is mixing in a club in SF. I mean paragliders with the two breeder tracks as bouncers? Nuff said! Buy it and frighten your neighbours

With his drum-heavy brand of minimalist progressive house, Steve Lawler has long breathed the recirculated air of the jet-set DJ, playing sets around the world and back. This latest Global Underground double-CD set has the tribal feel his fans have come to expect, and is a much more straightforward mix than his Nu Breed set released several years ago. Not as dark as a Richie Hawtin, or even Los Angeles era John Digweed, his approach is still pitch black and relentless, yet tempered with fun, sexy choices, like Thick Dick's "Orgasm," which brings the first CD to its, uh, climax. A slightly more varied second disc finds a similar sense of release in a remix of Desert's "I See the Light," while finding time to play with grinding, electro-inspired bits like Dirty Walter's "By Soul of Man." Both discs steadily raise the boom level throughout, providing a constant lift and a mesmerizing head bounce that, despite this not being a trance record in any way, provides a sexy, transcendent bliss nonetheless. --Matthew Cooke

Well did not know him beforehand but these two cd's are good. Not everything is super but it will make you shake, which is nice.
Steve's Best.......2005-07-07
I had heard dissapointing reviews on Lights Out 2 and great reviews on this one..I was really excited to get this album and have been listeing to it non stop. The 1st cd is very tribal, using lots of drums..very sexy too. Steve keeps it upbeat, funky and dark. The 2nd cd gets more Techy and dark for my taste but this goes down as one of my favorite cds so far.
tribal harshness.......2005-06-01
Steve Lawler is the king of tribal house (at least in my opinion) this C.D. will give you what you need to throw a slamin foam party or any kind for that matter. Deep bass lines and wicked drums, this is a safe bet if you like slammin tribal house music, try "home" steve lawler or even better global underground "nubreed" .

This CD is great, takes you on an adventure trip deep in the progressive house woods. A couple of songs are a bit cheesy and commercial but most of it is v good specially the second half of CD 2 beautilful and great mixing. Recommended for connaisseurs.
ditto.......2004-04-03
[]Deep dark dirty sexy beats. Low slung shot from the hip sound familiar ??Much better than vol 2. of course the studio cds do not quite capture the live experience steve provide, but gives a little insite to the way this DJ thinks.

Tenaglia, the DJ's DJ, has always smashed down dance music's divisions by mixing whatever he pleases without losing a smidgeon of musical impact. So it's no surprise that Global Underground: London, a double CD mixed live in London isn't a fusty, dusty artifact full of novelty tracks. Forever passionate about the music as well as his mixing, Tenaglia's choices are inspired by what really works on the dance floor. Peace's Divison's "Tribal Funk" is wonderfully voracious, and ATFC's "In and Out of My Life" sits just on the right side of screaming-diva house. By concentrating on subbed-out electro house in all its sweeping orchestral glory, London rocks and soothes in equal measure. There are plenty of blueprints and uplifting twists, such as Minimal Funk IV's epic "Definition of House" and Vegas Soul's teasingly groove-oriented "Junk Funk," but that's not all. Tenaglia has split the CDs so each one leans toward either house or trance, each never to the detriment of the other. So for the most part, the second CD is a sexy, blissfully escapist soundtrack, and the first is super-funky house above all else. If you own other Tenaglia compilations, then you already know what his mixes sound like--taut bass lines, musical beats with a soulful edge, and plenty of extended, glorious breakdowns. If you don't, then this anthemic and occasionally ethereal mix will be both banging and astonishing. --Maxine Kabuubi
Customer Reviews:
The groovy GU.......2007-04-28
Jungle and house with just a touch of trance. Very tribal and sexy-smooth. Totally different from any other GU release out there, Danny cooly went against the grain of the progessive trance scene. Danny Tenaglia, the first American GU DJ, had some serious balls doing this one out of London imho. Not as dark as John Digweed's Los Angeles mix, but it's the deepest mix in GU's arsenal.
Where as most GU's seem to have a distinct "personality shift" separating the two discs, GU:17 London's second disc picks right up where the first disc left off. A very mellow listen and not very dancey.
A Nice Blend of House vs Trance.......2007-03-18
Danny Tenaglia is one of those DJ's who likes to include music from all of electronica's genres in his sets. He does so again in this two disc compilation.
Disc 1 leans heavily towards house music while disc 2 enters the realm of trance and progressive house. I think both discs work and the track selection is fairly decent.
One thing I love about Danny Tenaglia is his choice of tracks to open a set. Global Underground 017: London is no exception. I think the first 2 or 3 tracks on both discs are the strongest elements for this album. On the other hand I wasn't too thrilled at his closers for both discs especially for disc 1.
It would be great to hear a set that opens brilliantly as per his trademark, but continues to stay with a more tribal house feel throughout. Tenaglia has an uncanny knack for mixing great tribal beats (usually in the first half of a set) which are sadly abandoned midway through a set. If he would put out a compilation that ends as strongly as it starts...
Both discs get 4/5 stars.
hmmmm.well I don't know about these reviews.......2007-01-20
usually GU offers the best in DJs and house music...this one man I got to pass..too slow...sounds like a slower version of Oakenfold or Digweed. God it was hard to listen to each track....christ...
I also got the Athens GU 10 hoping he would deliever... he didn't... so their ya go
The best tribal/deep house mix I've ever heard..........2006-02-23
After buying tons of CDs trying to find one that matches this set I think I may have to give up. Although I love Disc 1, the true gem in this set is Disc 2. I have listened to this hundreds and hundreds of times and to this day I love it as much as I heard it the first time. From the beginning, Microworld's Signals is a simple, repetitive loop that lasts for 10 minutes, but for some reason it hooks you and you find your head bobbing and fingers tapping. It really sets the tone for the whole CD, whose highlights include Elegia's "Basic," Vegas Soul's "Junk Funk" and Art of Trance's "Monsoon." However, tbe single best track on this album is the unbelievable remix of Schiller's "Ruhe." A similar mix can be found on the 2nd CD of Sasha and Digweed's Communicate, but this version is the one and only. Unbelievably deep bass, great drums and dark, eerie german vocals. A true masterpiece. The only drawback to this set is the mastering, as mentioned by a previous reviewer. The volume is set way too low and turning it up only starts to distort the bass. Unfortunate, but Tenaglia's mix itself is, in my opinion, the greatest ever.
The reason why I like Tenaglia..........2006-02-19
I have both the Athens and London GU collections. This is by far the better one. This is also the first thing I bought by him. I am in love with the tracks "New Day" (number 3 on disc one) and "In and out of my life" (number 6 on disc one). The words in both pieces I adore.
My only slight negative would be he has a tendency for repetitiveness in background beats within the tracks, but really this doesn't bother me so much because I love the song selection. I listen to these CDs at least once a week! He deserves the 5 stars!

Perhaps the most talented, diverse, and adventurous four hands in dance music production today, Deep Dish have fittingly chosen Moscow as the venue for their Global Underground debut. Combining the intrigue and mystery of the Russian capital with their own bottomless pit of discovery, Ali "Dubfire" Shirazinia and Sharem Tayebi weave one of GU's classic journeys. Disc one starts with 16b Vs Morel's warm, house-flavored "Escape (Driving to Heaven)," which shifts into Soul Provider's "Rise (Mas Collective Mix)." The ear-catching, Moog-like note during SSHH's smooth-stomping "Hold That Body (Wally Lopez & Dr. Kucho Remix)" is curiously addictive, and soon afterward we reach the heart of Moscow 021 with the psychedelic trance surround-sound of Chab's "The Dub Session (A Cooler Dub/A Harder Dub)." Shirazinia kicks off the second disc with a more direct nod to root influences, first using a dub-tinged Way Out West mix of BT's "Shame" before busting out a truly awesome trance dub gem, Blackwatch Presents Professor Okku's "Word Unspoken." Shuffle in other seamlessly folded treasures such as the driving Markus Shultz remix of Fatboy Slim's "Bird of Prey," the tense mystery of Accorsi/Robb's "Foundation" and the fluid denouement of Envy's "Faith," and you have another superb GU set for the collection. This record proves that in the world of trance-house DJs, Deep Dish are masters of their craft. --Steffan Chirazi

Solid up to a point.......2007-04-13
I agree with most of the reviews already on here. Both discs have stellar track selection, but there are some that seemingly don't belong, etc.
Having said that, I still listen to both of these CDs pretty dam often. Specifically disc one, the mix from I Can See the Lights through Hot is great, because the tracks go together so well.
Disc two is kind of like two mixes in one. It goes from track one up to I feel stereo, the track runs out, and then Bird of Prey starts at its beginning and the mix takes an entirely new direction (that's not to say this isn't good - Manilla Sunrise is a great track).
Also I'd like to note that I just got two 10" subs in my car, and Moscow sounds great out of them.
In summary, this album is well worth the money - I've got most of the global underground albums and this one has a place with me.
Its good but that about it.......2007-01-04
The only reason I got this CD was because it was recorded in Moscow, my home town. The double Cd has a few tracks that I enjoyed but for the most part it was a very blah CD for me. I have seen Deep Dish live and enjoyed their music, but this Cd just didn't do it for me.
You Can't Go Wrong.......2006-07-22
You can't go wrong with this cd or deep dish in general. It has tracks from Morel, Dido, BT & Fatboy Slim. The cd is banging but as the liner notes indicate, the second cd is heavier. The album is composed of dark vocals and deep bass booming tracks. With tracks from Dido-Thank You and IIO-Rapture, file along with Stevie Nicks-Dreams in developing the Deep Dish style. This could be the best deep dish album. The mixing on toronto may be a bit better. The only problem is my cd skips. Probably a problem with production. Filing along with Deep Dish Renaissance, Toronto #25 & Dubfire Toronto. If you are looking for any deep dish, start with Toronto or this cd.
Timeless.......2006-06-23
One of my favorite cd's it has great house beats, its tribal dark sexy moody bassy and has that phat bottomed funk.
Anyone who like any genre of house will love this cd.
THE CD DESERVES 5 STARS BECAUSE IT IS A CREAM !!.......2006-05-20
Hello,
This CD was choose by DJ MAG as the BEST CD COMPILATION for the 2001. Come on guys that is enough to say about this CD. It is the best in their genre. The CD moves from Deep house to a Deep Trance, then comes a tribal sound...and BANG...another Deep Trance takes you on a journey that you will really enjoy. I hope that you listen this CD at a high level of volumen to feel and the listen the real effects of the mix.

Onda Sonora, the 12th in the Red Hot Organization's series of AIDS-benefit compilations, effects a wildly successful marriage of current and traditional Portuguese and Brazilian styles performed by native stars and varied guests. Standouts include everything from a David Byrne-Caetano Veloso collaboration to the hip-hop-hard fusion of General D and Funk 'n Lata's "Sobi Esse Pano, Mano," from Brit-Brazilian trip-hoppers Smoke City's "O Cara Lindo (Mr. Gorgeous)" to a matchup of Nana Vasconcelos and Vinicius Cantuaria. A rhythmically insistent, soothing, and utterly entrancing set. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Solid Mix of Portuguese Styles.......2004-05-15
I feel the same way about most of this CD as the previous reviewer. I always sort of looked at this as a companion piece to Red Hot & Rio. Both are on the same "Red Hot" label, and this one came out three years later - I had to get it when it came out... so impatient I was! But which is better? I also liked Red Hot & Rio more but I definitely also enjoyed this one because it is VERY different. Only thing I can't quite see is Nina's voice being like Bebel's, but do think that both are terrific singers. Nina's voice reminds me more of Wanda Sa - but sweeter.
The CD starts out with an interesting David Byrne/Caetano track, followed up with probably my favorite band, Smoke City. The version of O Cara Lindo is different than the one on their feature album too; I dig this one better. Also in here is a Tribalistas cut (Monte/Brown at least - Arnaldo appears later in this ablum) which I enjoyed. Lura had a slow and sensual cut, KD Lang had some Portuguese Fado and there were some other solid cuts here too. I think my favorite cut is Madredeus's "Os Dias Sao A Noite" remixed. This is vastly different than the original on "O Paraiso", but so haunting and beautiful is the arrangement. Theresa Salguiere's vocals are sweet as always. Another good cut to me was "Sem Voce". One of the things I enjoyed about this was looking at the artists - Moreno Veloso, DJ SPooky/Vinicius Cantuaria (what a guitarist he is!), Smoke City (Christian Franck - another great guitarist)and so on.
The downside? Some of the Africa cuts weren't up my alley. I know the history of Portuguese speaking African nations and Brasil and Portugal well, its in my heritage. But it just wasn't for me. Some of the other songs didn't grab me either and its hard to say that this will be as timeless a release to me as Red Hot & Rio. Finally do be warned that this is a rather DARK cd - given the cause of the Red Hot organization, it sort of fits. If you enjoyed this, certainly check out Red Hot and Rio, Brasil 2Mil and work by Tribalistas, Madredeus, Vinicius Cantuaria, Caetano Veloso and maybe Da Lata's album titled "Serious".
Interesting... but Red Hot+Rio is better.......2004-04-02
I bought this record yesterday, mainly attracted by the names of Vinicius Cantuaria and Caetano Veloso in the list of songs... I'm not a great fan of electronic post-bossa and fusion monsters like Arto Lindsay or Carlinhos Brown, but after the nice experience I had five years ago when I bought Red Hot+Rio I check out new lusophone music compilations every now and then... After all, David Byrne's musical taste isn't bad even if sometimes strange. Speaking about Red Hot+Lisbon, I did not expect too much from it, so I'm not too disappointed - the only disappointment is that Vinicius Cantuaria does not sing on this compilation but only plays the guitar... I thought he would sing the song with such a romantic name, Luz de Candeeiro (Candlelight), in his own voice, so silky and sensual, but the one who sings it here is Nana Vasconcelos... Frankly speaking, I didn't like it, neither Nana's voice nor the rendition of the song. Among the ones I liked, I would mention Marco de Canaveses, a marvellous duet between Caetano and David Byrne, and Lura's morna Nha Vida (marrrveloussss... I'll find out more about this girl!) Smoke City's O Cara Lindo, Paulo Braganca's A Nevoa and Filipa Pais' Fado da Adita are quite good, too. Nina Miranda sounds much like Bebel Gilberto... Antonio Chainho's Portuguese guitar is mellow and beautiful. The other songs didn't impress me - "neo" arrangements of that type rather spoil the songs than make them more beautiful - the reason, I suppose, is that they contradict the sensual and dreamy nature of most Portuguese and Brasilian music, they're too harsh (I'm so glad that Sem Voce sung by Antunes and Lindsay is not Jobim's lovely Sem Voce that Maria Bethania recorded for his songbook... if it were a version of THAT VERY Sem Voce, I would be horrified). I'm not speaking about the African pops - not my type of music at all (however, Mulemba Xangola is good for dancing). Red Hot+Rio is much better in terms of arrangements - softer and more romantic.
Amazing tunes from another world.......2000-07-24
This CD was a wonderful find that I spontaneously bought after a summer trip to Lisbon. Although much of the music is not from Portugal, the mad pace of the dance songs and the strange melodies of the slower songs will remind you of far-off lands. I could not recommend this CD more highly, especially for those with an interest in international, Brazilian and Latin tunes. This CD will make you think, move and feel.
A Very Intriguing CD.......1999-08-13
I picked up Onda Sonora and I must agree that it is a very strange mix of songs. But the album still sizzles! Madredeus' Os Dias Sao a Noite is haunting and Bonga, Marisa Monte and Carlinhos Brown's Mulemba Xangola is incredible. If you liked Red Hot + Rio, you'll love Onda Sonora.
Onda Sonora is the future of world music.......1999-08-13
this great album (and great cause) combines so many styles and artists from so many places, and still the whole cd flows cohesively. from David + Caetano to DJ Soulslinger, this album never gets boring. Red Hot + Lisbon is the sound of the future, combining tribal drumming, acoustic guitars, and dj beats.

Best known for his vital role in Underworld, London mixman Darren Emerson demonstrates in this double-disc release a sense of levity alongside healthy swirls of trance-house hedonism. Spiced with dashes of soul, disco, and strong vocal turns, yet never lacking in the sort of tempo that requires a case of Red Bull to keep up with it, the whole set feels very much like a journey through Emerson's home music collection. He skillfully manages to bring some divergent strains together without missing (pardon the pun) a beat. Moving from the warm funkiness of Bert Drunk's "Groove Y'All" to the Harold Faltermeyer-esque echo of Saints & Sinners' "Pushin Too Hard" would be a stretch for some, but in Emerson's hands it simply makes for a logical progression. On the second disc, Emerson hits his Underworld-like cruise control and really takes off: Genetic Grooves' "Cloud 99" is pure blue sky coastal driving and Aaron Carl's "Dance Naked" is the surfing stop. And by the time Christian Smith's trance-soaked "Mojito" has been introduced to the mix, you realize that whether at home or in Uruguay, Darren Emerson's parties are an exercise in top-class fun. --Steffan Chirazi

Lacks Flavor.......2007-06-25
I listened to this Global Underground debut for Darren Emerson because of the positive impression that disc 2 of Emerson's second album in the series (GU020:Singapore) had left on me.
In my opinion, Global Underground 015: Uraguay is vastly inferior when compared to its successor. Both discs are loaded with bland tracks that quickly become tiresome after a few plays. I liken this album to the typical set one would expect to hear at some dingy club mixed by a no-name amature DJ.
Disc 1 gets 3/5 stars and disc 2, 2/5 stars.
.:::. still gets play.......2007-03-20
One of my favorite early Darren Emerson sets. I pulled this album out again a few weeks ago and have since wondered why I ever put it away in the past. A fan since 2001!
Absorbing Sexual Funk: An Ice-Breaker for the Masses.......2007-01-07
I did not know what to expect from this Global Underground release when I first popped it in the stereo, and what I got was perhaps farthest from any expectation I would have come up with on my own. This is a truly unique set; and I don't mean unique like James Lavelle's crash-and-burn Barcelona trip-hop cocky weirdness. This double-disc GU release lacks, almost entirely, the elements which typically comprise a GU release: intensly long build-ups (sometimes without blatant peaks at all), majestic soundscapes and sparkly, shimmering effects. This album is to the point. This is House. This is Deep House. And I love it!
Coming from someone who rarely explores the realms of pure House music at all, being a Progressive Trance/Progressive House fan myself, this is a testament to what Darren does here. Global Underground releases often have a sound reflective of the setting in which they are performed (Sydney, Hong Kong, Ibiza, Brazil to name a few), however this album does not feel like it's from Uruguay (and I'm not sure what that would sound like anyway). To be honest, this is kind of what Sasha's San Francisco release would have sounded like if you replaced the trance with house and the mastermind with the ex-Underworld disc jockey. That funky, bouncy feel-good funkify your mind groove style that comes to mind when when the city of San Fran is brought up.
This album gets straight to the point; disc one is a bit slower, but not by much since the entire album has this certain... *energy* that other GU releases lack (even though quite a few of them, if not most, are 'better' than this one overall). Funky, churning basslines, non-irritating vocals and familiarized/muted 4/4 kick pleasantly infest the first disc, and really, there are times few and far between where the first disc perfectly prepares the listener for the second disc.
The second disc drops the bomb immediately, and if I were made of rubber I'd be bouncing off the walls with these funk-strewn tracks. The basslines, in certain songs, even have that pedantic bass style, or 'walking bass', found in jazz music; these pedantic basslines are transposed, however, on top of crazy house music and the juxtaposition between the two mixes like peanut butter and jelly.
This is by far not my favorite GU release, or release in general. But it will keep me coming back to check out where Emerson is at. I have a mind to seek out his Singapore release and give it the same chance I gave this one; If at first you dont succeed, try, try again; that is what I told myself when I initially rejected this album as a GU fluke like Lavelle's Barcelona (which, by the way, twenty listens hasn't yet redeemed...) And, being that I listen almost exclusively to progressive trance, I am not used to having such sexual house music thrown in - especially in a GU release. I'm sorry, but I love it. It adds a whole new dimension of feeling to the mix. Some tracks feel like aural sex ;)
I do not regret buying this; for what he does, Emerson is an extreme talent. Check this one out. This album is funky, but most importantly, its FUN!

If it moves you... .......2005-01-03
i have been listening to dance music since 1998 and have always thought this way: "if it moves me, it worths listening to". Darren proves itself in this GU. Both CDs are very housy and will sure move you and everybody who listens to them.
First CD is filled with dance house beats; the kind of CD i put while taking the shower to forget all about the bad things my day might bring.
Second CD keeps the happy house feeling but introduces a bit darker sound (or underground).
Funky house, a GU winner.......2004-12-31
Emerson has long been the least popular DJ in the GU series becuase of his mixing style being much more housey than any other of the DJs in the line up. Hate it or love it, i love it becuase its just so funky and dancable. Not since De-vit have we had a house Dj tear it up like this. I prefer disc 1 over disc 2 by a little but they are both top quality mixes. If you want something even better, look for his Singapore mix (GU 20) which completely blew me away. Emerson is definitely not the mixer u want to sleep on so get this album!

After two other high-energy trance-techno mixes for the Global Underground series, Nick Warren slips firmly into a dreamier pulse with this Amsterdam set. The journey evokes the spatial climes of deserts and mountains more than it does sweaty European dance floors, but take that as tribute to Warren's ever-developing style and ability to find different gears for different journeys. Not that he sacrifices energy. His own Way Out West supply a power shift with "Intensify," Main Element's "Hedfuck" is a fine slice of pumping trance-funk, and Fluke's "Bullet (Cannonball)" brings a tribal vibe to matters. Warren continues to get a little more late-night on disc two, dropping some of the funk, bringing up the "pump" and getting down to some hard techno-trance. Futureshock hit the fast lane with the irrepressible, driving "Sparc" and Sonic Infusion cruise firmly with "Reformatted" before Warren brings his deftest, broadest Global mix yet to a close with the sweeping atmospherics of Ariane's "Eternity (Stripped Mix)." In short, this is another great mix by Warren, and it's proof-positive that he remains one of techno-trance's most progressive DJs. --Steffan Chirazi

House/Trance: CD1 is the Deeper Mix, but it's far from a warm up. Instead, it swings from the android voice echoes of Soul Mekanik's 'I'll Call U' to the Canter of Fluke's vintage Brit House anthem 'Bullet'. CD2 starts with an explosion: H-Bomb's 'Groove Attack', Futureshock's 'Sparc' runs Giorgio Moroder down with a vicious rhythm. Neil Himmos's 'Play' toys with Sound System Bass.

Electronica...Dutch Style.......2007-03-05
I'm not too fond of this compilation. It was admirable of Nick Warren to try and give this release a Dutch feel. At the release date of this album, the United Kingdom differed from the majority of Europe in regards to what genre of electronica was considered hip. Progressive house and trance actually originated in the UK as the DJ's of the late 90's created their own breed of sound. The remainder of Europe stuck with techno. As for Holland...they liked their techno and they liked it hard (still do today).
The resident DJ's at the club where this set was originally mixed lived by Nick Warren were claiming that Dutch electronica was actually progressive house...the second generation of progressive house. Hmmmm...
Disc 1 is fairly mediocre. No great tracks, but no horrible ones either.
Disc 2 on the other hand has some fairly decent tracks, but for every good one...there is a crappy one that has me reaching for the skip button. I just don't enjoy techno heavy sound.
I'm just greatful that my favorite DJ did not persue this style of mixing and track selection beyond this album.
Both discs get 3/5 stars from me.
Am I the only one who finds this album almost incomprehensible?.......2006-04-06
Ok, I'll concede that I'm likely spoiled by the best. Digweed, Sasha, Sander K, Hybrid, etc. All these fellows have taught me how to digest this extremely expressive form of music. I trust them, and even some of their lesser-praised works I extremely enjoy.
I'll also concede that this album has some killer tracks on it. I can't recall the track names (I really don't note them on discs I like even), but I'm glad to have them in my collection, and in my opinion they are the redeeming qualities of this blundersome release.
My final concession is that this album is the only example of Nick Warren's work that I have. This was my first purchase of his music, and only now am I willing to give some of his other work a chance.
So the reason why these two mixes still fall out of my favor is very simple: It is very uninventively and even slightly erroneously mixed. On CD2, he even brings a track in upside-down! (this is what I call it when an incoming track hits the snare on the opposite beat of the outgoing track's snare) Symptomatic of my not having heard any of his other works, I have no way of knowing whether or not this is standard quality for him, but this album was and remains, a big dissapointment.
I do hope he other releases are better.
Incredible.......2004-07-11
This Double CD is worth every penny that i spent on it. To start i own just about every Gu album including nick's budapest, reyjavik, and prague albums. ( No Brazil :( ...!)
CD1 starts of with the a great set opener and continues through some great mixes like Holden's Ariane song and warrens own lightning song Intensify. The Cd ends awesome with Bullet and a wicked remix of PMT's Gyromancer. This CD is somewhat chill, but far from a warmup mix.
CD2 starts of WEAK!... the first song of this Cd blows, however nick recovers quickly with some quick tunes 2-5. When the bassline of track 6 hit i was in awe cause this song is Roof Lifting! warren calms things down a bit with song 7 and 8 and prepares you for the best 2 songs on the CD. Tracks 9 and 10 absolutely kill me. The breakdown and buildup into the climax of 9 and suddenly being mixed into the bubble bass of 10 is awesome. 10 is a trance track, but its FAR from Cheese.
The set ends with a ambient remix of Ariane... a track from the first disk that leaves u in wonder of how nick did it.
Just friggin buy it
Warren turns over a new leaf........2003-09-07

For those long-time Nick Warren fans, it doesn't come as much of a shock. For those who compare this with his earlier GU releases, it is like comparing night and day. While listening to this album, one may ask, "What the f*ck happened?"
Disc one starts with the ephemeral notes of "The Word" and "Eternity". Soul Mekanik's "I'll Call U" is a great track that will get your body moving -- just a bit. The rhythm speeds up a notch from that point with WoW's low-key remix of "Intensify" and Soul Interactive's "Riddem Control". "Hedfuk" is great, and Fluke's "Bullet" is a bitchin' track from the past.
Disc two starts off at a rapid clip. "Ajuna", "Sparc" and "Play" are three outstanding tracks. "Ajuna" primes you for the driving and addicting beats on "Sparc", transitioning into "Play", which seems to have been drawn straight out of GU's Brasil compilation, also spun by Warren. The Stripped Mix of Ariane's "Eternity" is a great close for this ecclectic collection.
Nick Warren has shown a different face with this album. It is by no means a head-banging trancer. It is much more subdued, requiring one to listen to it in earnest in order to appreciate what Warren is delivering. No raw drum beats, no abrasive synths. No sharp peaks or dips. Only refined, funky, driving melodies that carry the listener from start to finish. If you're looking for something with explosive energy, try Warren's GU005-Budapest or GU008-Brasil compilations.

People don't understand the point of this grandiose mix..........2003-09-02
When someone buys Nick Warren, they want something out of the ordinary. This is not so with most other DJs; with Oakenfold and PVD you're set for banging trance, and with Sasha and Diggers you're set for melodic trance. With Nick Warren, every set is a new experience, but they are all kept together with that subtly percussive, uplifting and musical sound that is his signature. The pure creativity of this mix got me, it fit perfect for a wierd but wonderful experience. The same thing with Renaissance Revelation, people don't understand that it is meant to be a totally new experience. Don't let techno junkies and cynical trainspotters get in your way of the enjoyment of this mix!
