Bollywood at Its Beautiful and Bombastic Best.......2007-04-27

If you're looking for a fix of Indian pop culture, this CD will definitely do the trick! "Bollywood Gold" is full of wonderfully vibrant music, all of it overflowing with powerful emotion spiced up with a healthy dash of sentimentality and melodrama. The instrumentation is good, of course, but in this genre vocals are the main thing, and so this CD features some of the classic voices of Indian film--beautiful and charismatic voices either feminine or masculine (and highly distinct in that regard) that tell a story in their own right, that are able to evoke a wide range of feelings in the listener regardless of whether the latter understands the lyrics or not. If you've seen these movies, you'll relive them here for sure. If you haven't, like me, then the enchantment of this music might trick you into thinking you have--or else inspire you to go looking for them afterwards.

As with most "Rough Guide" CDs, this one excels in giving the listener a fine range of tracks both listenable and representative, all lovingly handpicked by an expert aficionado of that specific musical form. "Bollywood Gold" comes to us courtesy of DJ Ritu, who in the liner notes does a wonderful job of introducing the different singers (Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Jolly Mukherjee, and Mahendra Kapoor) as well as giving a crash course in the social history of playback singing in Indian film, after which each track (in order) is explained in good, relevant detail (including but not limited to what movie the song comes from). All of this comes after a movingly personal reflection on what this wonderful music meant to Indian immigrant families in England, of how important it was in their lives--making this quite a bit more meaningful than the average "greatest hits" album. And, as this listener found out, some of that enthusiasm is definitely contagious.

The CD is great. I am familiar with all the songs as I have watched all the videos before on the telly. Having your own CD is a different story altogether which I now have. Bally Sagoo is a great Music Composer and I am his fan!

I am a big fan of Bally Sagoo and the firt time i heard this collection of re-mixes i fell in love with his work all over again. As you can hear in the little tracks they offer on this site, the mixes havent been overdosed with cheap additions nor are they too much like their original version. Bally Sagoo is truley the father of all re-mixes and always shows his colors in his work.

Well worth the wait.......2001-08-26

The second volume to Bollywood Flashback has been well worth the wait. A perfect marriage of A. Hindi film vocals and B. Blockrockin' dance beats. The downtempo tracks like Noorie and Yeh Resmi Zulfein are sooo beautiful and make you want to pack up for a trip beginning in Morocco and ending up in Jaipur! The uptempo Aja Aai Bahar starts with a New-Orderesque euro-beat before going into full throttle again with THAT gorgeous vocal. The ragga-inflected Sajna Kahe Bhool Gaye and rock n' roller Lal Lal Gal are gems too. The instrumentals make you want to sing along, altogether now: "Ajaa....

Back in the day Bally was good but this a sad attempt at recapturing what he once was as a remixer...time to hang it up and hit the private party circuit chap.

I guess sooner or later Bally Sagoo had to come up with a follow up to Bolly. Flashback. What I like about his remixes compared to the millions in the market is that he picks songs that are not obvious candidates. Who would have thought Haye Haye Yeh Majboori could have a techno beat to it! Although the thought of a lower middle class Indian housewife singing a discotheque-savvy song to her husband is kinda funny. And then he re-interprets the song completely with new vocalists and gives the song a whole new feel. Its NOT patchwork! If I'm not mistaken he has sort of distanced himself from the 'ragamuffin rap' thing which is just fine with me...

Contagious fun.......2000-08-10

I stumbled upon this in a record shop in Toronto. I listened to about two tracks and bought it on the spot. The entire album is so much fun...In truth, I'd have to give Ballywood II 4 stars, but because the other reviewer was so extreme in his assessment, I'm awarding 5 stars. Bally Sagoo is much fun. For those who don't know, Bhangra is a hybrid of traditional Indian music and house music. Or something close to that. It's a smile.

Ok, this album is one of those one-song good, the rest bad. Nothing on this album is worth the cost. The only good song is Noorie, currently rocking the charts back home in India, the song is a great remix. The rest of the songs are just pure plain trash. Download the MP3 of Noorie, and save some hard-earned money! Long live Napster!

I bought this CD on a whim when I was in the Persian Gulf, not knowing that I was getting into an addicting sound! I was far from dissapointed when I played the album on my home system!!! In the final analysis: A more than worthy cacophony of sounds for your listening pleasure!!!

The CD is essentially a 90's dance remix of classic Hindi movie songs. Sagoo does a great job of mixing breaks, beats, drums, bass, tablas, sitars, etc. into a cornucopia of musical pleasure. Many songs combine melodic Hindi lyrics with Caribbean reggae and European dance beats. Marvelous music that really grows on you with every playback! These songs would not be out of place in any rave or nightclub in the US or Europe.

Great fun.......2004-01-06

What a pity it's so difficult to get these sorts of albums via Amazon! I got turned onto this music by Bend it Like Beckham and decided to hunt it down. I could live without the Blonde and Spice Girls songs, but I was intrigued by the Bollywood music, particularly Gunjan's incredible voice. To get Gunjan's album I ended up going straight to the label. I bought this Bally Sagoo album on a whim and I absolutely love it. I plan to hunt down Bally Sagoo's other works. By the way, I had to go through an Amazon vendor to get this - they did a great job, very prompt.
