The songs were recorded in New York and New Hampshire, USA in the summer of 2003.

I love Sakamoto's voice and David Sylvian is so tremendously talented. I highly recommend this cd. It's wonderful!

Awesome Single; Better CD.......2004-08-11

I'm going to go so far as to say that "Chasm" is Ryuichi Sakamoto's best solo album to date - and one of the best techno (for lack of a better word)albums in 20 years. It's classic Sakamoto, gorgeous, brilliantly constructed - song after song after song. And there are 16 songs here - no filler. I had heard rumors that Ryuichi would not make another 'popular' CD such as this - that he would focus only on soundtrack music and the sort of BTTB and Morelenbaum instrumentals, which is all good. But this is something else - wonderful, amazing, etc etc etc.

A very fine Dame Kiri .......2006-01-05

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa was never between my favourite singers but I have to admit that she is really a respectable artist and this lovely cd proves how versatile she is and how she managed to keep a fresh and mellow tone even in her fifties. She is really at her best in the extracts from Citizen Kane and the operetta The Enchanteress. It's a pity that no Verdi music is included in the program, Kiri Te Kanawa was a great Amelia (Simon Boccanegra) and a moving Desdemona. A very fine Dame Kiri indeed.

OK. I'm going to go out on a limb here. This is, IMHO, Dame Kiri's finest recorded performance.

I know that's taking in a whole lot of territory, but there is something simply magical, and magisterial, about her singing here.

Yes, I know "perfection" is that illusive impossibility to be sought but never achieved. However, on this night I think Dame Kiri did achieve perfection.

Simply a glorious life affirming performance by one of the great singing artists of the last fifty years.

Dame Kiri, Happy Birthday, and thank you.

Kiri's exquisite voice and expansive repertoire make for an unbeatable combination which reaches its crescendo on this special evening. A full symphony orchestra, two choruses, a jazz trio, and even a tenor (!) help Kiri in celebrating her 50th birthday. (That's her chronological age, the voice is timeless.) The hall's accoustics are excellent and orchestra and audience support without intruding. One of the reasons why I love Kiri's singing is that I believe she sings the songs the way the composer wanted them to be sung without the sometimes annoying embellishments employed by others. Kiri includes songs sung in her ancestral Maori in a program that takes the listener from the opera house to Broadway and then to an intimate jazz club. I love live concerts because I feel most artists are at their best before a live audience and this cd is proof. I don't believe that there is another artist recording today that has covered such a wide range of song styles and done it with such beauty and skill. This disc is confirmation. If you only buy one Kiri cd, make it this one. But don't be surprised if you start buying many more!

The first time I ever heard the voice of Kiri Te Kanawa was on a recording of Salaambo's aria from CITIZEN KANE for the RCA film classics series on vinyl. It was one of the most haunting and beautiful pieces of music ever composed by Bernard Herrmann. It was Kiri Te Kanawa performance of this piece that was so incredible. I had seen the film several times, but to hear a high fidelity recording of Kiri Te Kanawa on this particular piece really demonstrated not only the raw talent but also a depth of intuitive emotion that she brought to Herrmann's composition. Anyone that could interpret the inner struggle behind Herrmann's music so precisely demonstrated an uncommon ability to become one with the music. I still can't pronounce her name correctly but Kiri Te Kanawa is the epitome of a well-honed talent. She is a gift to us all. This CD is very welcome.

What a truly breathtaking concert! Kiri is obviously one of the top three divas to surface over the past fifty years!

Her technique is spotless, her tonality marvelous, and her intonation superb! For those worried about Kiri's "maturing" sound; age has brought a "different" soprano, but one just as lovely as ever...

The selection of music was fabulous, such a variety brings about an interesting and lively effect...

Citizen of the World is multi-instrumentalist David Arkenstone's one-man world tour. Thematically similar to his intriguing Citizen of Time project recorded a decade earlier, Citizen of the World is a more terrestrial affair, usually sidestepping the celestial, chest-swelling grandeur of earlier works. This was the first CD by David Arkenstone I bought and it's wonderful. Very light and relaxing, I really enjoyed the entire CD.

This music is perfect for listening to when I'm cooking, sitting around or being with the rest of my family. My six year old daughter loves it too. One song, "Safe Passage", makes me dream of seeing my daughter and my son on horseback, the wind in their hair, and the sun in their eyes, cantering across a wide plain towards an unknown but good destination. The rest of the songs are catchy, danceable and hummable; some don't leave my head for a while. My husband made fun of it at first but he came around and now he likes it too. This is worth buying for a beautiful music collection.

Not David's best..........2001-10-21

A cluster of world music cliches'; a disappointing outing from the ususally reliable Arkenstone. The album feaures none of the grand, sweeping orchestrations or pop nuances that marked his best efforts; instead, we are given song after song of bland, meandering sameness, more in keeping with meditiation/contemplation music than anything else. Fans of that kind of music may find this interesting; it would probably be good as ambient background or relaxation help. Only the last track, "Into the dreamtime," features anything resembling what fans have come to expect from David--and the best part of the song comes in the last two minutes! I was very, very disappointed with this album; but David redeemed himself with his next effort, "Caravan of Light."

Not being a musicologist, I enjoyed it!.......2001-09-07

For me, this is a good listening album, one that a person can sit back in a favorite chair, close his (or her) eyes, and enjoy. "Desert Crossing" was especially evocative, but I didn't find one less than enjoyable. Each one, except for the finale, succeeded in creating images of the locale in my mind. "Dreamtime" though is strictly meditative, reflective. Musicologists undoubtedly are justified in picking at the technicalities. But for true enjoyment, I recommend it.

Such majesty, such skill. Badness. Arkenstone is a pure genius. Commercial predator. New Age music at its best. Worst. This man deserves a medal. Hole in head. I have heard much of his music and find it relaxing and soothing. To the point of insanity. Buy this CD. If you are devoid of sense.

African instruments, clear production, great CD.......2006-03-29

I am always searching for new African music, and I happened upon Yeshe through his label's website, Dog My Cat Records. Granted, Yeshe himself is a white guy who I've read was born in Germany, but he lived in Africa for many years. This album has both traditional African songs and original compositions, split about half and half.

This CD has everything I look for in African music: traditional instruments (the mbira is featured), excellent percussion, and great singing. His voice is low and a little gravelly, and emotes very well. His female backup singers are smooth and on key. Unlike many independent label African-genre CDs, the sound and production quality are both excellent; the sound level of the instruments feature instead of hinder the vocal performances, and little to no white noise or static can be heard.

I enjoy the cover of "No Woman No Cry," the touch of African instruments adds a new dimension to an old favorite. The last track is a neat dance mix number remniscient of DJ Cheb i Sabbah or Loop Guru: using traditional clips to create a decidedly modern song. And, in fair warning, there is some digeridoo, if you're into that.

Overall, this CD is an excellent addition to my African collection, and I am looking forward to more albums from Yeshe.

A beginning of a Bernard Herrmann legacy!.......2002-04-08

The first film score by the great Bernard Herrmann is still one of the most haunting and touching film scores ever written. What's also amazing (since he's so far the first person I've noticed to do it) is that he receives his first Oscar nomination on his first film, and won the Oscar during the same year for his second film, All That Money Can Buy. Is there any other composer who receives an Oscar nomination on his first film, and who wins on their second? not to my knowledge. The theme for Kane puts you in his skin, and you notice what kind of a man Kane (or William Randolph Hearst for that matter) really was. While listening to the music, you have to sometimes feel sorry for Kane. Orson Welles is a complete hero. For one thing he is a genius, he brought to life one of the greatest film composers, and created masterpieces of films. I would've loved to hear what Benny's music was like on radio. In fact, I wish that I could hear his Moby Dick Cantata, which has never been recorded since the 40s. Anyway, I'm drifting off here. It may not be as good as Charles Gerhardt's adaption, but it still should be part of the Bernard Herrmann collection. If you didn't like the movie, listen to the music, it'll soon make you more interested. The reason I say that is that I thought I didn't like the movie, but to tell you the truth, I still can't decide whether I like or not, because I watch it every once-in-a-while.

Citizen Kane (1941) is an extraordinary film and an American tragedy of a newspaper tycoon from his humble beginnings to the solitude of his final years. One of the greatest films ever made with Orson Welles only 25 years old at the helm, who changed the standards of film making.

This album is a masterpiece, beautiful beyond belief, and everyone should own this for their private collection. Several inspiring themes throughout, performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Joel McNeely, featuring a soprano on track twenty seven - "SALAAMBO'S ARIA" an unforgettable composition suny by Janice Watson.

The entire CD is entralling and haunting, almost perfect or near perfect in content, Bernard Herrmann was nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score. Producer Robert Townson and Varese Sarabande Records have given us what you could call the "definitive" straight-ahead-rendition of one of the greatest musical works in film history.

Waiting for More.......2006-11-02

An excellent collaboration. My third favorite collaboration from these two. Forbidden Colours and Heartbeat really is thier best work but this peice is well written, arranged and produced and can be played over and over. I bought the Russian Import with 10 tracks including older collaborations from these two artists. I have been a fan for about 18 years and David Sylvian does an amazing job on this. This is a much stronger and prettier comp than the previous Zero Landmine, No More Landmines, which was also a pleasant suprise. Strongly recommended for the listener.

I first became aware of Didjworks when visiting New York. I walked past Simon7 playing didjeridoo in one of the subway stations, and I'm really glad I bought one of the CDs because they've been difficult to find otherwise -- until now!

The distinctive didjeridoo sound lends itself to the haunting music here -- trance patterns overlaid with samples and eco-friendly messages.
