Afrika Bambaataa, the Godfather of Hip-hop, has worked with artists as soulful as James Brown, as pop friendly as Boy George, and as funky as Bootsy Collins. The Cosmic Force co-creator can look back on his illustrious career and say that he and his crew are responsible for influencing the fate of several sub-genres of music, including Miami and Atlanta bass, Latin freestyle, hip-hop, house, and early techno. 1982's "Planet Rock," featured on the Don't Stop Planet Rock EP, is the ultimate party-rockin' record. The lyrics tell groove junkies about a utopia where socializing and getting down are the only requirements for residency. The words may go in one ear and out the other, but the beat knocks holes in the back of heads and it cannot be ignored. DJ Magic Mike's "Bass in the Planet Mix" funkily incorporates just what the title suggests, while the classic mix, more electronic in feel, embodies an overwhelming digital atmosphere. --Asondra R. Hunter

3 out of 5 stars Didn't have what I was looking for..........2001-10-18

I have been looking for a year for the electronic-tinged, vocoder-filled instrumental version of "Planet Rock" that used to be played everyday on the radio and have been unsuccessful. I thought I had finally found it when I came across this EP, however it was not there. I gave the recording three stars because I already have all these versions. My rating may not be fair because I was looking for a particular version that is unfortunately not included in this collection, however the song remains danceable and groundbreaking for its time on all the included versions. If you have only one or two versions of this mega-hit, get this EP.

5 out of 5 stars "Planet Rock" gets the bangin' re-mix treatment!.......2001-09-12

Man, I don't see how the previous reviewers could diss this CD by giving it such low ratings. The Magic Mike re-mix is my favorite version because of the James Brown breakbeats he looped on top of the main rhythm. And the original 12" vocal version plus Bonus Beats 1 is reason enough to buy this CD. This is the song that everybody was rockin' during the summer of 82'. Classic jam that made all the b-boys and b-girls start breakin' and poppin'!
It just brings back the early sound and feel of hip hop that I miss so much. None of this "bling bling" crap that's going around now. This song gave birth to the entire "electro funk" scene which in turn influenced other styles of dance music like hard house, techno, etc. Add this to your collection of old school CD's and call yourself a true hip hop head!!!

2 out of 5 stars Not really worth it.......2001-08-06

If I had to rate this album on only one of the tracks it would be number 6 and in that case it would get a 5 star rating. On the "Bass in the Planet Mix" we are given a treat from someone who is truly a standout in their field, Magic Mike. The other tracks are dry and out of touch with the traditional Planet Rock feel we are used to. I believe that Magic Mike almost takes the song to another level. 808 probably doesn't have any business touching this song nor do any of the other artists who serve up their humble offerings here. Of course, we are given the original version on the first track but outside of that the only other reason to buy this disc is Magic Mike's cut.

1 out of 5 stars Stop! Stop that Music!.......2001-07-17

I have an extensive collection of music similar to this particular type of sound, however, I was largely disappointed when I heard this CD. I listen to... regularly and after I listened to Planet Rock, I bought it. This is not the tune Swedish Egil is spinning, nor ANYTHING like it. This CD is intrusive compared to today's techno sounds. Perhaps just ahead of its time then, it's beyond its time now. All of the songs are the same bad song, just louder. It doesn't carry you away, it sends you away...

5 out of 5 stars great and unmatched.......2001-07-10

i have owned this cd for some time now and i still listen to it from time to time a must have if you like old school.

Album Description

Montana Skies creates a unique new sound with the unusual pairing of cello and fingerstyle guitar. Combining classic with modern, the group has created their own "new acoustic" sound with innovative original compositions and arrangements. As the group moves ahead, they continue to stretch the boundaries of contemporary instrumental music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Montana Skies.......2005-01-26

I downloaded the free MP3 of "Danza" to play in our middle school media center, to give us all a little relief from classical piano pieces playing in the background. :) "Danza" sounded so fresh and invigorating, that I downloaded all the MP3's offered by Montana Sky. I love the blend of classical guitar and cello. It is not easy to find well played, well recorded, classical music with a world flavor that is not distracting in a library setting--and also does not make everyone sleepy. There are Celtic and Latin sounding pieces here.
The guitar and cello both are recorded with a very full sound and are exquisitely mixed and mastered. A very nice surprise. I've put both CDs on my wish list at home for myself too.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Album.......2007-07-21

I would be remissed if I didnt leave a comment, This album is so soothing for your soul. The songs bring back my fondest childhood memories. this is a must have for all music collectors. They sure don't make music like this anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest gospel.......2006-09-15

Sing out my soul is one of the greatest gospel album ever recorded. I've always love this album since I first heard it in the 80's. It has that smooth, peacefull sound that gives you that blessed feeling. My favorite is the 3rd track "Sing out my soul". You will love this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Remember When?.......2006-01-12

If you like religious music you are going to love "Sing out my Soul." I will never forget "How I Have Longed to Draw you to Myself" and the other beautiful songs on this album which I listened to as a child. I have searched for it for years and was unable to find it. Although I am not a big fan of religious music, this CD is an exception. Trust me, you are going to love it. I have ordered three copies so I can present two as gifts to my coworkers.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational West Indies.......2005-03-05

We brought this album back from St.Maarten,(Dutch West Indies) in 1979. One of our family members who live there had it and we beat every music shop on the island to find it. The calming steel bands along with the inspirational lyrics seperate this album from all the others in its class. Sing Out My Soul is beyond description. My Aunte loved Hear O Lord so much she wanted it played at her funeral. Sadly over time, we were able to grant her wish when she passed. What a beautiful melody. If you like inspirational music, this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars An old favorite.......2003-07-12

My parents travelled to the Caribbean for many years, and brought this album (LP) back one year in the 60's or 70's. We haven't had a record player for years, and the discovery of a CD version brought joy into our house!

It has our favorite, "Hear, O Lord" along with many other beautiful hymns from the era of guitar masses -- which many remember fondly. It has the added touch of steel band accompaniment on some tracks, and is a decidedly joyful experience.

It was transferred directly from analog tape, and the tape may have been transferred from the LP, so there's a little bit of background noise, but I'm only mentioning it for the more persnickety among us who might find this disappointing.

Whoever decided (in Jamaica or Trinidad) to release this CD a few years back: Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars worth it.......2005-06-19

well as of right now, i have 1 15" ascendant audio sub in a 4 cf. box tuned to 22 Hz, most songs on this album are so crazy i cannot sit in my car it hurts to much. Only problem is that the high bass hits around 50 Hz or so dont sound to good, but that's why you have mid's. If you want killer bass, this is the cd you want, this will def. show off your system no matter what kind of sub you have. Have fun!

5 out of 5 stars I have felt the boom!.......2002-12-14

I bought the Sonic Overload CD set a few months ago, and I had never played a Bass Mekanik CD on my stereo system before. You can imagine my surprise! My system consists of a Roadmaster speaker (RBB3000, I think) with 2 6.5" low/midrange (20hz is the lowest it can handle) 300-watt woofers and 2 22,000hz tweeters, a Roadmaster BASS BLASTER 600-watt subwoofer (10", it had a neon light but the controller module got fried somehow), and 2 50-watt Magnavox bookshelf speakers (mainly for bass). I give the Sonic Overload CDs 5 stars!

Album Description

"If you take time to listen to it as a whole piece, in one sitting, you will realise the majesty and grandeur, the feel and atmosphere, the playing and composing talent - in fact the very heart and soul - of a master musician at work. The opening track is one of the finest of her career to date, as the scene is set with glorious synths and textures flying all around, making you believe that there's a real group at work and not just one person, the clarity of sound and production, as on the other album, being second to none. "Absolution" is one of the most gorgeous such compositions you'll hear ... The rest of the album is both multi-layered, cohesive and consistent ...a sit-down, serious-listening affair, a voyage through space and time that's as good as it gets." -Andy Garibaldi - CD Services

"Attunement begins with the atmospheric "Bringing Down the Silence," a massive exhale, a cosmic benediction, and (with Connie's total-depth-vocals) a bodily engagement. "Strings of My Heart" is pure loveliness, a rhapsodic melody for harp and strings. "Out of the Mist" features a solo flute with drone, that later huffs up to a huge bagpipe band with bass drums, all echoing through the valleys of the mind, banging boldly on the heart. Very ennobling!  The pivot of the album is "Fathoms," which features Connie playing the ten-foot sonic steel sculpture, which sounds like the roar of the universe. You will probably not hear such an all-encompassing sound work you over, ream you out, and massage every neuron. Once worn down, there's no escaping "Deep Mother" who works her raw sensuality and midwife-compassion through goddess-Connie's voice. The primordial vibes continue through the lizardy-firebreathing sounds of "Gabriel's Dragon." "Absolution," with its lead organ sound, is one of the most gorgeous such compositions you'll hear ... blissful music that would somehow strike a chord in your heart, something that stays with you and is re-awakened here. Attunement continues with symphonic stews of somber longing, glistening gleams of redemption, and triumphant clarion bells." -CWright and -Andy Garibaldi

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Two worlds of music.......2004-06-26

First I would like to say that I greatly admire Constance Demby's talent. However, if you are interested in buying her CDs, be aware that her music falls into two vastly different worlds. Novus Magnificat, Set Free, Aeterna, and Sanctum Sanctuorum are rich in harmony and very uplifting. Attunement, Spirit Trance, and Sacred Space Music are atonal and reminiscent of a waking nightmare. Unfortunately Amazon.com does not make much of her music available for listening so it is difficult for someone new to her music to be aware that the mood of her work varies greatly. I would love to have her compose more music along the lines of Set Free and Novus Magnificat.

5 out of 5 stars Listen... and get ATTUNED!.......2001-12-03

"Magical. Enthralling. Enchanting. Moving. Profound. Subtly
exhuberant. Deeply touching. Fathomless. Haunting. Ethereal.
Inspiring. Heartfelt. Ancient. Delicate. Brazen. Passionate. Cosmic.
Galactic. Graceful. But most of all.......BEAUTIFUL. Simply
beautiful. Once again... YOU'VE DONE IT!!!!! Tonight... I sat back,
dimmed the lights, smiled and... GOT ATTUNED. I can't wait to hear you play
live... Such energy transmitted over CD. I can't imagine what it must
be like to 'feel' it in person. Don't mind me if I bring tissues with
me when I'm moved to tears of joy." - Chai G.

5 out of 5 stars Attunement....Demby's spontaneous "Masterpiece".......2001-11-22

Attunement is a true miracle... a live performance captured with a minumum of engineering and recorded in vivid, spectacular sound. Those expecting another Novus Magnificat or Aeterna need to open their ears to other vistas they may never have suspected existed. But in the lens of Demby's all-encompassing Camera Obscura, Attunement ranges from the raw, sensual cries of the Demby Earth Mother to the Bachian passages of organ and chorus. The textures are constantly changing, like the colors and fragrances of a secret garden. You round another corner and are greeted with an even more beautiful blossom than before....such is the power of Attunement. This CD demands careful listening and will ultimately prove to be Demby's masterpiece of spontaneous composition (spontaneous combustion??...it does smoke at times...the fire from the earth's inner core) A stunning CD that deserves the widest possible exposure!!

"Magical. Enthralling. Enchanting. Moving. Profound. Subtly exhuberant. Deeply touching. Fathomless. Haunting. Ethereal. Inspiring. Heartfelt. Ancient. Delicate. Brazen. Passionate. Cosmic. Galactic. Graceful. But most of all.......BEAUTIFUL. Simply beautiful. Once again... YOU'VE DONE IT!!!!! Tonight... I sat back, dimmed the lights, lit some amber candles, leaned back, smiled and... GOT ATTUNED. I can't wait to hear Constance play live... Such energy transmitted over CD. I can't imagine what it must be like to 'feel' it in person. Don't mind me if I bring tissues with me when I'm moved to tears of joy."

from -Alan Clancy, healer
"Heads don't roll - they open - in a Demby concert. Her concerts have a profound affect on me, not only for the beauty of the music, but for what remains in consciousness; it creates a temple of spirit like no other has ever done, pushing you beyond your capability to receive. You relax, reflect, twist to open, resist, then go. This procedure is more like an internal workout. The more you put into it the more it gives you. No other artist can reach this depth. I suggest you prepare beforehand your intention to change. You will be met. This is serious work. Your old spirit will unravel for days. Take the journey. It will be "the sound of your life!"

from - Mark Krueger, metaphysical astrologer
"This was not just a concert. It was an opportunity to ground the music of the spheres into planet Earth and the body Human. For on these concert dates, Dec 17-18, the Sun was at the center of our galaxy, a portal to Source. As Constance grounded the new vibrations through her music, we became the listening instrument for the collective body, the sympathetic strings of the Mother's Heart."

from - Dr. Baune, D.C., D.A.C.N.B.
"I am a physician and healer and, during the December concert, I literally watched myself facilitate a non-local healing of a young patient of mine who has deep seated emotional abuse issues. I had no intent to do this before the concert began. The music opened an intuitive part of me that knew where to go and what to do, and took me to the space where it all happened. Several days later, the patient had noticed a profound shift since that night. It expanded the forum of healing possibilities that I can now use. , and Constance's music is something you don't just hear or listen to, you experience it at the deepest level of your being. The harmonic vibrations that she brings forth are a profound gift to this planete."

from - - Cris Beaty, healer and counseler
"Experiencing Connie's Salon Concerts is being in a temple of profound effect and lasting meaning. For me - my body deeply relaxed, mind freed, emotions bubbled, light DNA activated, purpose reclarified, soul touched, chakas opened."

from - Scott, musician
" I sat down in the back yard to listen, and as I was enjoying
"Absolution," my favorite piece with the big organ, the wild peacocks that hang around my area came up to the back fence and stood there transfixed --all of us listening to this incredible music together under the light of the full moon. The peacocks finally left, but only after the album had finished playing."

from - - Viki King, consultant and author "I observed during the concert that Constance Demby's soundings have the capacity to awaken the higher strands of DNA in our bodies."

from - "Journeys to the Infinite"(FUN Radio Romania)
"I think Constance's work has never been better than on ATTUNEMENT"." This concert is from the other side of the Universe! ATTUNEMENT has all the qualities of a spiritual initiation"."I feel something unexplainable in my body and mind listening to this album. It's a sort of exorcism through music".

"The sound of the Space Bass scares me with his other-worldy beauty".

5 out of 5 stars Excelente.......2001-10-25

Es una aproximación al trabajo inicial de Demby. Para quienes la conocen, comparada con Bach, es un disco imprescindible como una aproximación a sus fases iniciales, y de manera sorprendente con un calidad inigualable desde el principio

4 out of 5 stars How Dare You, Sir.......2007-04-21

Just a minute now! Seems that what is needed here on these pages is a quick antidote to the previous review. For not only is Ron Blake's sophomore effort on Detroit's Mack Avenue Records *not* the worst jazz album that anyone's ever heard, it is in fact a true gem. And Blake's playing on these mostly original tunes is so tasty and satisfying that it's not even in the same *cosmosphere* with that Noodly One Who Shall Remain Nameless. Somebody didn't eat their wheaties this morning.

In fact, Ron Blake plays good tenor all over the place, not just here on "Sonic Tonic". Not to be confused with RAN Blake, Boston's other elder statesman of avant-garde piano (cf. Cecil Taylor), and not related to Vancouverite Seamus Blake, another good tenor who is also up and coming, Ron Blake has made many fine contributions to albums all across the jazz spectrum, from early associations with masters like Johnny Griffin, Art Farmer, and Benny Golson, to more recent outings with maturing lions like Roy Hargrove, Nicholas Payton, and especially of late as a member of Christian McBride's multi-faceted neo-fusion unit.

The current offering features some excellent cross-pollination of styles from modern trad to bossa-funk and reggae. There are many nice production touches from Motown-favorite MeShell NdegeOcello, as well as some creative re-mixes on the limited edition bonus disc. The only tune that seems dispensible on the whole album might be the song "Pure Imagination", which to me is dispensible in most settings anyway, but overall this stuff is nothing to sneeze at (unless you're on bad medicine that makes you sneeze).

The reviewer below states elsewhere that he's a jazz musician in NYC, but if that's really true, then I would have to suspect Ron's gettin' the gigs he's not. Do your best to ignore sour grapes while giving "Sonic Tonic" a spin, and expect many more fine releases in the future from Ron Blake.

1 out of 5 stars The worst album I've ever heard.......2006-09-24

This was by far, the worst album I've ever heard in my entire life. This even worse than Kenny G's Songbird. And that is saying a lot. Imagine you're favorite food. Cooked to perfection by your favorite cook. And then before its served to you, the cook spits in it. That bad.

True the rhythm section vibes good together, but when Blake comes in he totally kills the vibe. So out of a 5, I give this album a 1. And thats because your can't go any lower than that.

        4 out of 5 stars Fresh Inspiration.......2005-08-24

jazz can be very difficult to listen to these days. especially new jazz. that is, original compositions by contemporary players. so much of the newness is buried in "modern-jazz" cliches and nebulosity. it can often be terribly boring. not to mention fusions between jazz and hiphop. terrible products have come out of that union.

Ron Blake's album is one of the few exceptions to that trend. An album where the band is comprised of people who are equally comfortable in the groove and straight-ahead. the fusion sound then becomes something full of subtlety and interplay. Sonic Tonic is refreshing to hear in a scene so overrun with funk-jazz, jazz-hop trash. the musical has its own profile and sound. its own texture and drive. the drumming of Chris Dave plays no small part in that. While a few of the songs rub me the wrong way because the lean to heavily to one side of the paradigm a bit heavily or they just seem a bit over-produced, the majority of the music is practically incredible. of all the tracks, the two versions of Invocation are the most incredible pieces to come from this effort. they are potently moving.

if you're hesitant about buy the album, go for it. it is a proper gamble.

5 out of 5 stars Really great jazz CD.......2005-07-26

Jazz fans everywhere are raving about the album Sonic Tonic by Ron Blake. The album was produced by soul/alternative artist Meshell Ndegoeocello. If you like good jazz music you will enjoy this set. The actual CD includes 11 tracks. There is also a bonus disc included which includes remixes by Carlos Mena, DJ Spinna, Jahi Sundance, Osulade & Transdub Massive. The CD is quite funky, trendy and modern. People who enjoy classic jazz will still dig this CD, but the younger crowd may also enjoy it. One song I particularly enjoyed was "Tom Blake" (DJ Spinna Free Radikalz Remix. With the bonus CD you really get your money's worth!

5 out of 5 stars Blake's "Sonic Tonic" is innovative and exciting!.......2005-07-26

Ron Blake's "Sonic Tonic" is the most innovative and exceptional jazz release out right now. His unique fusion of r&b, funk and jazz with international sounds, really sets this album apart from traditional jazz albums. Part of the reason for this could be, is that it was produced by Me'Shell Ndegeocello, a very well-respected artist who has worked with everyone from Prince to the Rolling Stones, and grabbed nine Grammy nominations. You can definitely see Ndegeocello's influence throughout the album, matching Blake's killer saxophone with strong beats and exotic supporting instrumentation. Tracks like the mysterious "Dance of Passion" and the energy-charged "Chasing the Sun" are two of my favorites because of their pure excitement. For the more laidback listener there is the too cool "Shades of Brown," and Willy Wonka inspired "Pure Imagination," on which Blake plays with the theme from the classic film. The bonus disc of remixes is also amazing if you want to see jazz presented in a new and exciting form. No matter what your tastes, "Sonic Tonic" is a fun and stimulating album from start to finish, as well as a great example of the way the boundaries of traditional jazz can successfully be challenged.
