5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-07-23

I always enjoyed the Journey song "I Believe". I purchased this album mostly for this song. The rest of the album is great also.

5 out of 5 stars Living in the 80's again.......2007-07-13

This is a fabulous album of Journey's greatest hits and cannot figure out why I didn't have this album already, in my collection, because I like Steve's singing so much. When I heard it at the end of the Soprano's it brought back nice memories.

5 out of 5 stars It's the Journey, not the destination.......2007-07-12

Once Steve Perry joined Journey for the "Infinity" album, the band's course was inevitably reset. They changed direction from being a progressive rock band to an arena rock juggernaut. Perry's main contribution was a strong melodic sense coupled to his more soulful vocals. The hits started almost immediately, as "Lights" and "Wheel In The Sky" became FM Rock Radio staples.

That is what this greatest hits focuses on, the songs that became the standards by which the public remembers the band. If you were interested in the albums BEFORE "Infinity," I suggest "Time 3," which adds material from the years when Neal Schon was still aping his jazz-Rock tenure with Santana and Gregg Rollie was doing standard rock keyboard boogie. Personally, I liked them better when Perry got on board. The sound focused and the songwriting tightened. Songs like "Separate Ways/Worlds Apart" and "Any Way You Want It" could add a jolt of adrenaline to a day of radio. When Jonathan Cain replaced Gregg Rollie on "Escape," Journey took on a romantic bent from Cain's songwriting. "Open Arms" came first, then "Faithfully" (on "Frontiers") solidified it. These were pop radio songs without peer, and they make Journey's "Greatest Hits" an essential document of 70's and 80's radio rock. (The updated version includes the best song from the 90's reunion "Trial by Fire," "When You Love A Woman.")

The other reason you might be looking at this is not because of Steve Perry's voice or Neal Schon's guitar heroics, but because of Tony and Carmella. It was Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" that echoed out of the final minutes of "The Sopranos" closing episode. It was funny that Tony passed over Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra for Journey and inspire a million parodies in the process. (Including Hilary Clinton...where the best moment is when she and President Bill Clinton are flipping through songs and Bill says "My money's on Smash Mouth...") Talk about cementing your place in pop culture...who could have asked for better?

This best of offers a pair of soundtrack rarities in "Only The Young" (from "Vision Quest") and "Ask The Lonely" (from "Two of a Kind"). Missing are a few crucial singles like "Suzanne," "Stone In Love" and "Walks Like A Lady." If you really want them, go for the box sets or individual CD's.

5 out of 5 stars Complete.......2007-07-09

This is how you do a greatest hits collection. You put ALL of them on there. Not a mix of half greats, and half "other", then release the rest on another "greatest hits" CD.

4 out of 5 stars Get the Infinity album too........2007-07-07

Unfortunately, it does not include my favorite song tandem Feeling That Way/ Anytime. For that you need to buy The Infinity album. It does include some great songs, a good mix of rockers and ballads. Definitely worth the price to anyone who loves classic rock and roll or was a teen in the late '70s. But do yourself a favor and get the Infinity album too.

Four-year career hiatuses followed by sprawling double-albums could spell trouble for a band of the Chili Peppers' stature: consider they'd originally recorded enough for three discs. The restless, trouble-plagued outfit that helped break alternative rock into the mainstream with a potent fusion of punk 'n' funk in the '80s finds itself two decades on almost completely devoid of the former's energetic abandon, while the latter's effusive rhythms are considerably subdued over the course of this two-hour, 28-track collection. It's not so much that the Peppers have lost their muscular, often uber-macho edge as they have willfully tamed it in service of mature reinvention here. The mellower, often introspective, if no less potent pop ethos that characterized the crossover hit "Under the Bridge" blossoms fully here on tracks like disc one's "Snow," "Wet Sand," and the jazz-cool of "Hey."

The title track, "Desecration Smile," and "She Looks To Me" finds them venturing further into laid back pop ballad territory, while the tricky rhythms of "Dani California," "Charlie," and "So Much I" eventually kick into familiar top gear on the pop-savvy "Tell Me Baby" and hip-hop seasoned "Storm in a Teacup." It's not that there's a paucity of musical adventure here ("If" and "Animal Bar" finds them wafting into Floydish neo-psychedelia while "Make You Feel Better" seems to channel no less than Joe Jackson) but that it's delivered with a subtlety--and dare we say it?--tasteful musical restraint that's a stark contrast to the band's early, overly overt nature. There's perhaps too much mid-tempo simmering and reflection going on; like most double-albums it could be focused into a much more compelling single disc. But that seems largely beside the Peppers' hooks-over-histrionics point here: an unlikely record to kick back to, and one that both challenges assumptions and eases the band into middle age with an oft languorous, if undeniably savory groove. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers calls the band's first new album in four years, Stadium Arcadium, the most-anticipated album of the spring, "the best thing that we've ever done…. There's this weird kind of sublime, subliminal undercurrent that is suggestive, in a spirited way, of our earliest records." Exuding all the passion, energy and funked-up rock that have made the Red Hot Chili Peppers one of the most popular bands in history, the 2-CD Stadium Arcadium, simply put, will knock your socks off.

5 out of 5 stars BUY IT!.......2007-07-21

I have been listening to this album consistently for almost a year in a half since it came out.

This is coming from someone who music typically runs a short half life.

If you are reading this about this album, and don't yet own it...then do yourself a favor and buy it!

The cynics of this album are the overly-cynical type that find a flaw in just about anything. Do not listen to (the very few) of them.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-13

I bought this because of the singles that have been released so far, but have really enjoyed the other songs. After listening to it 3 times, I really like most of the songs. Good, solid Chili Peppers.

5 out of 5 stars Snow..the hit from the soundtrack.......2007-07-11

Okay, I am going to review one song, and not the entire album (yeah, yeah. Go ahead with the negative votes). But please read on.

For the past two days I've been listening to one song, Snow, over and over. The cool thing is with iTunes repeat, it's the kind of song that just undulates into highs and lows, mellow and rapping and metal and back to mellow; like it never ends (and by the way, I DON'T do drugs anymore. Just want to clarify).

This is what the Chili Peppers represent to me. They have that definite sound that's been imitated ad-infinitum. But they started that sound (at least for white people) and added the heavy guitars to rapping found only in Run DMC's second hit, Rock Box back in the early 80s. Punk? Yeah. Well, that's just part of their story. Much more multicultural than that.

But what I want to say is, you know how there's that song that represents a certain time in your life? I call them life soundtrack songs. They're powerful and give you goose bumps, and you remember that time when you were, say, just walking down the street, and this beautiful serene rhythm took over from hearing that one song. Two years from now I'll try to recapiture this song's impact, but it will be second hand by then.

So, thank you Chili Peppers, for coming up with what I see as tPart II of that beautiful/desperate epic of pain and resurrection; Under the Bridge. That's when I knew you guys were incredible, and that you'd been there.

You know.

And that it made you better in the long run.

5 out of 5 stars Thank God it's a double CD.......2007-07-11

RHCP have been my favorite band for years. As you can imagine I was hungry for their new material. I bought this immediately after it came out and all I can say is WOW! This is, by far, their best work. THey show such a range of musical talent from balladry to hard rock to funk (often in just one song). Even thought it is a double CD set, they have left me craving for more. Let's just say, I have had a year to totally wear it out.

5 out of 5 stars Just good music..........2007-07-10

If you like music, looking for something new and inexpensive buy this album. I put both disc in my cars cd player and havent taken them out for months.

When Elliott Smith died late in 2003, he took with him one of the unique songwriting gifts of his generation: part folk grandeur, part punk fury, and virtually bottomless in eight short years of solo recordings. Thankfully for that generation, and many to come, he left behind two dozen songs that his Portland, Oregon, producer and pal Larry Crane has crafted into a retrospective celebration of Smith's contribution to music. Mostly house-recorded demos plucked from the fertile three years that followed his 1994 debut Roman Candle (including an early take of "Miss Misery"), there's an eminent clarity to these songs that makes them sound like they were recorded yesterday. A lone acoustic guitar is the general accompaniment to Smith's lamenting wail, his self-deprecating lyrics forever a contrast to the sheer beauty of the melodies. "What are you doing hanging out with me?" he asks in "Whatever (Folk Song in C)," his double-tracked harmonies mocking both Simon and Garfunkel. Along with fragile versions of "Angel in the Snow," "Looking over My Shoulder," and a cover of Big Star's "Thirteen," it's as eternal as anything Smith offered when he was with us, and, as one of several shining moments, makes you forget he ever left. --Scott Holter

Album Description

Disc One: 01. Angel In The Snow From the Jan/Feb 1995 sessions at Leslie Uppinghouse's home studio that yielded much of the S/T record. Elliott's mix appeared on a CD that came with Mike McGonigal's magazine, Yeti: Volume I.

02. Talking to Mary From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. This is Elliott's rough mix as the master tape is sadly missing.

03. High Times From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. An early working title was "Coma Kid". The "drums" are really just doubled snare (with the throw off loose) and ride cymbal.

04. New Monkey From sessions for Either/Or. The "bar" was certainly La Luna in Portland, with "the millions of fans ignoring the bands."

05. Looking Over My Shoulder From sessions for Either/Or. The title of this song is not certain.

06. Going Nowhere From sessions for Either/Or. Due to the limits of eight tracks you rarely get bass guitar on these sessions unless it is integral to the arrangement. One of the most haunting songs in this collection.

07. Riot Coming From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. Notice the excellent melodic electric guitar part.

08. "All Cleaned Out" This song was tracked at Jackpot! Recording Studio in early 1997. The title is an assumption as there were no notes on or in the tape box.

09. First Timer Tracked at Jackpot! in early 1997. With different lyrics this song has seen life as "Ghost Writer" or "From a Poisoned Well". Elliott recorded the guitars too loud to tape in this collection, hence the occasional "chunk" noise.

10. Go By From sessions for Either/Or. Recorded to 8-track by Elliott in 1996, but then bounced to 2" tape by Rob and Tom where they added overdubs. It was obviously a contender for Either/Or at some point. Early versions of the song were known as "Bye Bye" and "Two Timed".

11. Miss Misery (early version) This song was tracked at Jackpot! in early 1997. It was later recut with lyric changes at Jackpot! and used in the film, Good Will Hunting.

12. Thirteen This Big Star/Alex Chilton song featured often in Elliott's live sets and in the Lucky Three short film by Jem Cohen. This version was recorded by Rob Jones and Elliott Smith in Elliott's Basement in April 1996 and was broadcast June 1, 1996, on Rob's Locals Show on KWVA 88.1 Eugene, OR. This was a simple live take with acoustic guitar and vocals.

Disc Two: 01. Georgia, Georgia From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. Even though it was older, it was an early contender for the Either/Or running order.

02. Whatever (Folk Song in C) Apparently from the September 1994 sessions at Tony's. Features JJ Gonson's vintage Domino guitar that Elliott favored. Also known under the working title "Hanging Out With Me".

03. Big Decision From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. Elliott's mix appeared on the CD compilation, A Slice of Lemon.

04. Placeholder From sessions for Either/Or. Sung so softly, but really beautiful.

05. New Disaster From sessions for Either/Or. Vocals and music are from different takes. Vocals are from the reel that provided From a Basement on the Hill with "Last Hour", but the tape reel flange scraping sound (which you can hear on "Last Hour") was even more distracting on this song. Music was from a later instrumental take, with organ and drums but no vocals. This is the only instance on this record where we combined takes in this manner.

06. Seen How Things Are Hard This song was actually recorded on a 4-track cassette. Mixed by Tom and Rob for possible inclusion of Either/Or. Also known under the working title, "Sleigh Bells".

07. Fear City From sessions for Either/Or. Also known as "See My City Dead". Check out the cool melodic organ part and Elliott's grooving drum style.

08. Either/Or From sessions for the album Either/Or. Apparently the song title was appropriated for the album title but not the song. There's also a version of this song with alternate lyrics called "No More".

09. Pretty Mary K (other version) From sessions for Either/Or. This is a completely different song than the Figure 8 track, but seems to feature different words with a parallel theme. An early version was worked up as "Everything's Okay" - note the similar phonetics.

10. Almost Over From sessions for Either/Or. Some of his fastest guitar picking in this collection.

11. See You Later

12. Half Right These are two Heatmiser songs from their third album, Mic City Sons, performed solo in this collection. From the Rob Jones' Locals Show sessions, "See You Later" was released on the Air Check cassette on Rob's label, Jealous Butcher.

Technical Note: Except for the special case of "New Disaster", where independent instrumental and vocal takes were combined, all songs are presented as tracked by Elliott, and every effort was made to check stereo placement, track levels, editing ideas, arrangement ideas and the overall feel that were present in his rough (or released) mixes. In many cases remixing was simply an attempt to make the elements of the song slightly more legible, and in other cases to reduce the background tape hiss. In no way is this album simply a product of the studio in 2006 - it is a collection of songs, any of which could have easily been included on his albums of 1995 or 1997.

Songs previously unreleased except for: "See You Later", Air Check cassette (1999,JB020/Jealous Butcher/limited to 300 copies) "Angel in the Snow" Yeti: Volume I (2000, 2500 issues printed/pressed) "Big Decision" - A Slice of Lemon (1995,KRS100/Kill Rock Stars, still in print)

4 out of 5 stars fans will enjoy these previously un-released tracks.......2007-07-21

In my Alabama high school, our English teacher had us select writers to do a report on. She carefully went down the list announcing a name with a short one-line bio to quickly introduce the writer to the class. My hand shot up to claim Sylvia Plath when I learned she committed suicide in her thirties; I was morbidly intrigued. In preparation for that school report I remember sitting in the library with headphones on listening to a BBC recording Plath made of her poem "Lady Lazarus." I can still hear the tone in her voice when she announces: "I have done it again. One year in every ten I manage it.... And I a smiling woman. I am only thirty. And like the cat I have nine times to die.... The second time I meant To last it out and not come back at all.... Dying Is an art, like everything else. I do it exceptionally well. I do it so it feels like hell. I do it so it feels real. I guess you could say I've a call." At the time I couldn't help but read into every quiver as evidence that Plath knew she was going to take her own life shortly after writing and recording this poem.

I approach Elliott Smith's posthumous release New Moon with the same ears; with song titles like "Going Nowhere," "Whatever," "Almost Over" and "Big Decision," I thought I would hear something in the lyrics that would announce his early death in 2003 (which was first reported as a suicide, though the evidence is still inconclusive on whether or not the two stab wounds were self-inflicted). Epitaph Records released an album with some of his newer material in 2004, but in New Moon, Kill Rock Stars offers a 24-song double-CD with material he recorded between 1994 and 1997. The CDs offer more examples of his songwriting brilliance, using acoustic guitars and simple recordings that are the basis of his earlier work. I never really got into the overly produced stuff he put out after leaving Kill Rock Stars, so this CD offers a great look backwards at a sound that was so familiar to me in college. There are no big surprises on this album, but fans will enjoy these previously un-released tracks.

5 out of 5 stars New Moon by Elliott Smith.......2007-07-16

Elliott Smith was a musical genius no matter what his personal life or his untimely ending were about. He was like no other of our time---if you are a Smith fan, this collection will rock your world ten times over. Extraordinary!

5 out of 5 stars Gone Too Soon.......2007-06-28

I love this collection. It's like two lost albums were found. Some of his most beautiful and haunting material. The world lost a brilliant songwriter when Elliott passed away. His death is as important to me as John Lennon's (if you knew me, you'd know that that means alot in my world); they both could have gone on to contribute so much more to the world. Maybe they're somewhere playing together right now. That would be cool.

4 out of 5 stars An artist who will be forever missed.......2007-06-27

I lived in Portland Oregon in the mid 1990's and some of my best memories are the Elliot Smith shows i saw in quaint local bars and clubs, up close and personal, just Elliot and his guitar. I always loved him with his band as well, but to me, the true artist in Elliot Smith always came shining through in his solo shows, when his fantastic songwriting was front and center.

If you are the kind of person who owns every Elliot Smith CD, and considers the Kill Rock Stars records to be his best, then New Moon is a must have. There is no need for me to go through track by track to describe the beauty of this album. The care that went into this release by the people who put it together deserves five stars in itself.

Listening to New Moon made me realize how great Elliot Smith was and how much i miss hearing him and seeing him create new music.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for Elliott fans!!!.......2007-06-27

It totally astounded me. I had no expectations, but would not have been surprised if these tracks were left off Elliott's records because they were somehow sub-standard. They are not. Either/Or could have been a perfect double CD with the inclusion of these tracks. If you are an Elliott fan, you will be exstatic about these archival gems.

Both a stopgap release until Patti Smith writes another album's worth of material and a way to keep her name in front of the public after her highly publicized 2007 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this set of a dozen covers finds the singer/poet in an unusually reflective mode. Some of the sources are obvious for those familiar with Smith's influences (the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan), some less so (Paul Simon, Nirvana, Jefferson Airplane, Neil Young), and a few come out of left field (the Allman Brothers Band, Stevie Wonder, Tears for Fears). Smith's innate class and approach guarantees there's nothing awful here, but there also isn't much that stamps these versions with her own vision. She does little more than deliver the words in her unique spoken/sung voice and--except for adding a banjo and her own poetry to an acoustic "Smells Like Teen Spirit"--keeps the arrangements close to the originals. At times she seems distant from the material, running through the Doors' "Soul Kitchen" and Young's "Helpless" with an oddly soulless detachment. Likewise, her band seems to be on autopilot, playing with little emotional involvement or attempts to bring fresh interpretations to tunes that are, with the exception of Dylan's "Changing of the Guard," surprisingly unimaginative choices. Considering the raging and extreme overhaul Smith did on Van Morrison's "Gloria" and the Who's "My Generation" in her younger days, this quieter, gentler approach seems flaccid, even bland in comparison. --Hal Horowitz

Absolutely Wonderful! Patti Smith never disappoints me and these twelve cover songs are some of my favorites. Great songs and Patti, who could find any fault with THIS? I have listened a couple of times now and don't think I will tire of it. If you are a Patti Smith fan, go for this one. Her voice and delivery are, as usual, hauntingly beautiful and poetic.
Love it!

4 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Good.......2007-06-24

Patti Smith has made an artistic move much more common in country than in rock; when the songwriting muse dries up, interpet the works of others (e.g., Willie Nelson). Prior to hearing this I feared the worst, not because it was all covers, but because of the obviousness of the selections. That being said, I'm suprised to find this record consistent and satisfying.

1 out of 5 stars Hideous.......2007-06-20

She did a bluegrass cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit. Bluegrass. How can you miss the point of a song that completely? How is it possible?

The only songs here that she hasn't completely butchered (Gimme Shelter for example) are the ones that are so similar to their original versions that you might as well listen to the originals.

5 out of 5 stars Patti Smith is definately back!.......2007-06-18

Patti was never one to play it safe. This time I thought she took on too much risk. I saw the track list before I heard any of the alternative Patti versions. I thought it would be impossible for anyone to cover a collection of some of the best Rock classics of all time. Well, she does it very, very well. I was not convinced the first, and even the second time I listened to "Twelve." By the third time I realized what an exceptional job she did with this huge challenge she presented herself with. The bottom line is that she completely connects with and respects all the songs on "Twelve."

Tracks that I like best are "Gimme Shelter" and "White Rabbit" -- just listen to those two if you are short on time and want to get a taste of this CD. Also, the poetry reading by Patti on "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is a great addition to the original track. It's almost like Kurt had it in his head but forgot to write it down.

Patti's previous CD "Trampin' " was a masterpiece. So now with back to back incredible CD's she has proven herself to be as vital as when she first released "Horses" in 1975, a CD many now consider one of the top 10 Rock CD's of all time. [Horses] [Trampin']

I am a long time fan of Patty but found CD uneven. Hersinging is better than ever. However, her arrangements and renditions are uneven. Helpless is awesome! But "Are You Experienced?" does not get better even with repeated listening. Still "White Rabbit" makes it all worthwhile.

The big question about this soundtrack is: how's she doing? No, not Beyoncé, silly--how's Jennifer Hudson doing? And more specifically, how's she doing by "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"? To this reviewer's ears, she doesn't top the original Effie, Jennifer Holliday--or even Lillias White, from the 2001 Dreamgirls in Concert. On the other hand, Hudson isn't afraid to pullout all the stops, whipping herself up into a total diva frenzy as the song getscaught up in an unstoppable crescendo. As for Beyoncé, she adapts superbly to the 1960s- and 1970s-tinged material, though "Listen"--a ballad that also appears on her own B'day album--lacks the spirit that infuses the classic tunes on this album. For make no mistake: this is hard-hitting, high-octane music, infused with an urgency and passion that makes most contemporary R&B albums sound timid. When Hudson and Beyoncé duke it out on "It's All Over," or when the "One Night Only" ballad gets reinvented as the dance-floor burner "One Night Only (Disco)," the sheer energy flowing from the speakers is transporting.

Note that the two-CD Deluxe Edition features a larger booklet and additional tracks, including dance remixes of "One Night Only" and "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," as well as composer Henry Krieger's demo of "Patience." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars You GO Girl!.......2007-07-12

This music, this movie, this Script is so awesome! An amazing portrayal of a struggle for stardom. Beyonce' is beyond beautiful and "represents" the icon "supremely" (sorry...had to go there!). The music is so well written, I love each and every track! Enough has been said about Jennifer Hudson, she has won her due, but ALL the actors did an amazing job.

4 out of 5 stars If you like the movie you'll like the album........2007-07-11

Great music from the movie. My only complaint is it's literally pulled from the movie, so it's a little weird to listen to it while not watching the movie, the singing dialog from the movie. Jennifer Hudson is the highlight throughout the album.

If you want to live the Dream, this CD will always be there...

I love this CD...it takes me right through all the emotions and action of the movie. Nothing is left out, all of my favorites are included even the less commercial cuts like Eddie Murphy's "Jimmy Got Soul" which gives the CD a well rounded feel.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Even Better MUSIC..........2007-06-16

Dreamgirls IS the best musical since GREASE... HANDS DOWN!! great songs and great performances by Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, Jamie Fox, Anika Noni Rose, and especially Eddie Murphy... that boy did his thang acting and definatley singing. i almost forgot that eddie murphy had a really good singing voice...

of course the showstopper "and i am tellin u (im not going)" is my favourite song. im only 23 and im familiar with the original version performed by jennifer holiday. i love the original but to me J-Hud Killed it!!!! i perfered her version just because it was heartfelt and she performed it OUTSTANDINGLY in the movie. i cried in the theaters when she performed it... STANDING OVATION!!!!

my other favourite track is "i meant you no harm/jimmy's rap". i love the beginning of the song. eddie murphy SANG that song. then it threw me off when he started rappin. that rap was too funny!

all the other songs were great but here are my joints:
"move"
"one night only" (original)
"one night only" (Disco) (my favourite of the 2)
"cadillac car"
"I want you baby"
"dreamgirls"

this does not have all the songs on the movie. you have to purchase the deluxe edition of get "heavy" 'effie sing my song" and more...

this is probably my favourite SDTK i own and i definantly reccomend this SDTK to anyone... and the movie is as good and the songs!!!

Leonard Bernstein's musical update of Romeo and Juliet, with a young Stephen Sondheim's brilliant lyrics, had already galvanized Broadway with its vivid reinvention as a parable of racial intolerance and generational conflict. But director Robert Wise's lavish widescreen presentation broke fresh ground by taking the story to its most impressionable audience, the teenagers who could identify directly with Tony and Maria, and opened up Jerome Robbins's kinetic choreography through bravura camera work. The original soundtrack album was not merely a huge seller but a unique touchstone for an otherwise rock-oriented audience, and its release on CD benefits from an expanded program untenable in its initial LP release, as well as a 20-bit digital transfer. With Richard Beymer, Marni Nixon (Hollywood's vocal doppelgänger of choice, here standing in for Natalie Wood), and Rita Moreno dominating, the show's bounty of terrific songs and exciting instrumental pieces remains an ear-filling treat, mixing operatic passions, tart social commentary, and high comedy. From "Tonight" to "One Hand, One Heart," "America" to "Jet Song," this is a landmark in American musical theatre and film beautifully realized on disc. --Sam Sutherland

3 out of 5 stars Buy it for posterity.......2006-12-30

Yes, this is the movie version and is an important part of 1960s pop culture, but it pales in comparison to the Broadway Cast. The sound quality is sub-par, and the voices are nowhere near as strong as the 1957 Cast. The movie also cuts some important music, or rewoks the score until it is completely different from the original. The order was also changed from the original show, and it is hard to listen to for someone that is familiar with the original. Overall, 1957 cast over this one, but buy it for the memories if you must.

Amazon.com's Best of 1998

Elliott Smith's fourth solo album and major-label debut, XO, brings narrative detail and a wide range of emotion to an indie meld of '60s-style rock and folk-pop. Whether in the broken stateliness of "Waltz #2 (XO)," the Sgt. Pepper tribute of "Baby Britain," or the explosions of "Amity" and "Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands," Smith's melodic and arrangement senses give his vulnerable vocals and brilliant wordcraft the maximum effectiveness. XO is a watershed in singer/songwriter rock. --Rickey Wright

Amazon.com essential recording

On XO, Elliott Smith leaves the indie doldrums behind and takes wing to new, lush surroundings. By adding full instrumentation to his acoustic reveries, Smith has ascended to a new level of songwriting that shores up his gentle voice and country-tinged guitar playing with extra layers of vocal arrangements and charming piano vamps. Strains of classic rock filter into the Beatlesque "Baby Britain" and the Beach Boys-inspired "I Didn't Understand," but Smith succeeds in adapting them to his style rather than the other way around. A foot soldier in DreamWorks' war on standard-issue rock & roll, Smith joins new label mates Rufus Wainwright and Morphine as sophisticated interpreters of the new male psyche. XO is a stunning shadow print of a soul adrift in the music industry, a dark place indeed. --Lois Maffeo

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Elliot... how I miss you...........2007-06-27

I first heard Elliot's music from the movie Good Will Hunting in 1996 or 1997 I want to say, and I went out the next day and bought every album he made. This one, by far, is my favorite next to Either/Or. Elliot had a way of perceiving the world in a different perspective. How prophetic his melanchology infinite sadness came... [He took his own life October 2003] The harmonies are haunting but ring true, there is a little slice of Beatles in the mix of that 2nd hand guitar that just plays near to my heart. Buy it... how you will not be disapointed, only when the last song fades out...

5 out of 5 stars A good place to start.......2007-05-09

When you're hearing an artist for the first time, it's important to start with the right album: I firmly believe it can make the difference between becoming a die-hard fan and walking away underwhelmed. In the case of Elliot Smith, the right starting album is almost certainly "XO." Whether it's truly his best work I don't claim to know, particularly since I haven't heard all his albums yet, but it is an excellent introduction: it's (almost) instantly likeable while retaining many complexities that draw you in deeper with repeat listens. Chances are, hearing this will get you interested in his other music, and even if you end up liking only one Elliot Smith record, I'm betting that this will be it.

Also, for those who assume that Elliot Smith was one of those pretentious, self-involved adolescent artists (a la Dashboard Confessional), you couldn't be more wrong. I know, because I used to think the same thing, and I was wrong. The fact is that, even if you don't like the "intimate," "vulnerable" lyric style that people associate with Elliot Smith, you might still find plenty of reasons to like him. For one thing, the lyrics on XO contain a lot of emotion, but they are abstract in all the right ways and never simply sound like a singer talking about himself. For another... well, I have one word for you: songwriting. These are clever, melodic, unpredictable, and frequently stunning songs that Paul McCartney would have been proud of--and I mean 60s Paul, not current washed-up Paul. To make a long story short, if you are genuinely interested in music, don't avoid this album because of the hype: you owe it to yourself to listen. You might be disappointed. But I doubt it.

5 out of 5 stars Undertows and updating: it still works very well .......2007-04-26

Like Grant McLennan of the Go-Betweens, Elliott Smith could come up with songs catchy enough to haunt you when you're nowhere near a CD player, an MP3, or an iPod and won't be for a few hours. 'Baby Britain' has hooks: by the twelfth listen you realize it's not really a happy song. 'Waltz #2' may be derivative... or it may be inevitable, distilled into a tune and a sentiment that won't let go...

Obvious stylistic comparisons to the Beatles and to the Beach Boys aside: what makes Smith's stuff so memorable is this ability to synthesize these influences and to add the indie sensibility to it. He has been compared to Nick Drake; how about a few shades darker and a few decades later than Brian Wilson? What mild profanity there is here serves a forthright presentation of contemporary, rather confessional subject matter. Perhaps a bit depressing in large doses: but while not an inventive musician, the vulnerable, appealing Smith was definitely an innovator.

4 out of 5 stars Triumphant leap!.......2007-02-22

XO is my favourite Elliott Smith record. This is the first big budget, polished album he produced. Where his earlier material was stripped down and had an off-the-cuff feel, XO has Smith sounding more like a full band. The sense of melody and timing on XO is always impressive and the lyrics remain as personal and unmediated by cliche as ever. It makes you think of the pop sensibilities of The Beach Boys and The Beatles but comes with vividly introspective, spookily relatable lyrics. At times it also has a more jagged, rock edge: "Amity". The best place to start and the most consistent record.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and Just Perfect.......2007-02-05

I discovered Elliott Smith late. A friend who knew I was a long time Nick Drake fan gave me this cd, very intuitively! I found it to be full of well-crafted catchy pop songs, lyrically advanced and ever amusing.

It is mostly acoustic guitar and voice heavy, although more lush and fully produced than his previous works. That is a good thing! I find the sound of both infinitely pleasing. Elliott Smith has a gentle voice that is never annoying.

The best thing about XO is that it sounds like a greatest hits collection. There's not a bad song in the bunch. My favorites change regularly; right now I most enjoy the beautifully sweet but lighthearted Pitseleh, Independence Day, and Bottle Up and Explode!

One warning: Don't listen to the haunting track 14: I Didn't Understand, while very depressed. It won't help.

Sure, The Editors are a bit dour, what with songs like "Blood" and "Bullets" and "Fall" sporting baleful themes. And the oft-noted similarity between them and Interpol will be apparent to listeners on the near-instant basis of the bands' singers, who share a bellowy, stentorian voice, which means, really, that both are fond of Joy Division's Ian Curtis. The Editors, in fact, come closer to Joy Division (geographically they're nearly kin, being from Manchester). Deploying an instrumental color palette of their dark early-80s predecessors, The Editors win with chiming guitar work--as on "Someone Says," which shifts rhythms a la Interpol even while sounding wider-ranged and better-lit. Vocally, Tom Smith can wobble the edges with tremors of urgency stoked by Chris Urbanowicz's guitar atmospherics and occasional outbursts. "Fingers in the Factories," a lyrically mirthless little number that interjects a stellar combo of simple beat and bright-toned guitars to charge up the labor-related lyrics, driving Smith to an emotional charge, something that lots of post-Echo and the Bunnymen ensembles have difficulty doing convincingly. The Editors manage energy in the service of drama, a near-necessity in rock. --Andrew Bartlett

4 out of 5 stars Strong sound........2007-07-11

This is another album that I bought on a whim, primarily from hearing the tune "Munich" on the radio. I ended up loving the whole album. Very strong. One could probably say that the band's sound is a hybrid of U2, The Doors, and some others. I think their sound is compelling. The more I listen to this album, the more I like it.

5 out of 5 stars A new discovery.......2007-07-08

Didn't know them until I heard them on the radio. Their second album is even beter than the first, more lyrical. A very pleasant discovery!

4 out of 5 stars Sounds Alot Like Dead Can Dance.......2007-06-30

This is a very good CD with great melodies and interesting words, built around the intriguing voice of vocalist Tom Smith sounding amazingly like Dead Can Dance singer, Brendan Perry. Indeed, a few of the songs sound like they could have been done by Dead in their heyday. In total, a fine listening experience.

4 out of 5 stars Fans of Interpol...here's another band for you.......2007-06-27

Anyone who likes the style of Interpol will appreciate this band. It's essentially the same thing, but maybe just a little more melodic at times. Don't be turned away thinking this is just a cookie cutter act, they've taken a style and added their own unique touch. An excellent album from a band that is bound to make it big.

5 out of 5 stars Some Enchanted Soundtrack!.......2007-03-11

My family had this album in the house when I was a kid, so I knew most of these songs by heart when I was about 8 years old. Recently I saw the film on TV, and when I heard "Bali Ha'i", I knew I had to get this CD. This is one of the best soundtracks that I have ever heard, equalled only by, perhaps, "West Side Story". "Bali Ha'i" is my favorite. It works on me like magic, still evoking the mysterious wonder surrounding that "special island". In fact, the movie, with all of its colorful effects, plays in my head when I hear these songs. There are the fun numbers like "Bloody Mary" and "There Is Nothin' Like A Dame". The ballads "Some Enchanted Evening", "Younger Than Springtime" and "This Nearly Was Mine" are all that one could want in a romantic song. And Mitzi Gaynor's big moments - "Cockeyed Optimist", "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" and "I'm In Love With A Wonderful Guy" - are pure joy. She conveys the hopeful naivete' of the 50's to perfection. "Dites-Moi" is a treat for me because, guess what? Je comprends le francais! But you don't have to speak French to appreciate this album. These songs have universal appeal with interesting, recognizable melodies, fun to sing along with. The remastered sound gives the orchestral arrangements (Ah, those soaring strings!) a new clarity that I could not have appreciated when I was much younger. The entire CD sounds fantastic, so if you like this movie, you will love the soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars south Pacific Sound track.......2007-01-09

2 out of 5 stars South Pacific.......2007-01-09

The CD came as promised and in the condition promised. I'm very satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars A dramatic, heartfelt and sometimes even brooding score--but still one of the best happy albums of all time !!!.......2006-12-23

Movie buffs and fans of the great musicals will not be disappointed in the original soundtrack recording of the words and music from the epic motion picture South Pacific. The digital transfers by Mike Hartry provide us with a fresh sound exactly the way it was intended to be heard; and the quality of this sound on my portable CD player is excellent.

The CD begins with the "South Pacific Overture." This beautiful, bold and striking piece of music sets the tone for a musical of magnificent acting, singing and cinematography. The next track is very sweet; "Dites-moi" is a ballad performed by Mitzi Gaynor as Nellie Forbush and a children's choir playing the roles of island native children.

A number of songs and ballads on this CD are worth special mention. "Twin Soliloquies/Some Enchanted Evening" deals with the emotions two people feel as they are falling in love; and "There Is Nothin' Like A Dame" is a memorable homage to beautiful women sung by incredibly talented men playing the roles of soldiers. In addition, "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" is an amusing ballad about a lady who cannot tolerate her man's flaws while "I'm In Love With A Wonderful Guy" and "Happy Talk" express the joy of love. Finally, "This Nearly Was Mine" is a touching ballad by a man who has lost a love. Excellent!

The Ken Darby Singers work wonders to enhance the beauty of songs including "Bali Ha'i;" "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" and "I'm In Love With A Wonderful Guy." You will be thrilled with their performances.

The liner notes offer us a track listing of the songs on the CD. Moreover, Joseph F. Laredo writes an extensive essay about the history of the Broadway show and how it was transformed into a major motion picture. Of particular note we learn that the film version of South Pacific has several "ghost singers." Mitzi Gaynor sang her own songs; but leading man Rossano Brazzi's vocals were dubbed by Giorgio Tozzi. Juanita Hall played Bloody Mary but her vocals were dubbed by Muriel Smith who had played Bloody Mary in the London production. John Kerr plays the role of Lieutenant Cable; but his vocals are dubbed by Bill Lee.

South Pacific remains one of the greatest motion picture musicals to this day and this CD proves why. The songs are written by Rodgers and Hammerstein; consequently both the vocals and the musical arrangements are flawless. The performers who sing these songs express every single emotion--even mixed emotions--with great sensitivity and much thought. Fans of great classic musicals will be thrilled by the quality of this CD; and people who appreciate music from both stage and screen will never be dissatisfied. ENJOY !!!

4 out of 5 stars "Happy Talk".......2005-09-30

I used to purchase LPs in the 70s of every Broadway cast recording or film soundtrack I could afford as a teen with a part time job. It is odd that it took me so many years to update my CD library with classic R & H scores. This CD of the soundtrack to "South Pacific" is fine in sound quality with ample liner notes. My only caveat is that it did not get the classic Angel Records treatment accorded to "Oklahoma!", "The King & I" and "Carousel".

With her expressively breathy vocals and uplifting melodies, Mindy Smith expresses both the romantic and spiritual dimensions of rapture. It can occasionally be hard to tell whether Smith is singing of God or love, or if she even makes a distinction between the two. Whether she's invoking prayer and sin in the opening "Out Loud," hoping that God's looking out for her in "Out of Control," casting a seductive charmer as a "Little Devil," or recalling her preacher father in the title track, Smith's material blurs the distinction between the earthly and the ethereal. Her duet with kindred spirit Buddy Miller on "What If the World Stops Turning" highlights the album, though the Nashville-based artist rarely hints at country within her buoyant brand of folk-pop. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Hurrah, Finally a second album and it works!!.......2007-06-08

A local alternative radio station did a show once about second albums that never measured up to the first so they were the last. Not so here.... this is equally as good if not better than Mindy's first album and I highly recommend it too. You can't miss with Mindy Smith. Her eclectic style and sound make her one of the new music icons.

5 out of 5 stars Mindy Smith: Far More than Another Pretty Voice.......2007-05-28

This will not be a survey review describing and critiquing each CD track, though I confess to personally finding such reviews often helpful. I intend only to weigh-in that those whose musical taste is electic or who appreciate country-alt music should strongly consider sampling Mindy Smith's talent. Yes, I think that she is extremely talented. Her voice is pure and sweet vulnerability itself and her songs, while mostly poignant and a little angst-filled, can also be up-tempo and uplifting. Others, fail to fit neatly into either of the above categories but perhaps are a little of each. Take Edge of Love, for example, which is both a love song and a prayer and one of the loveliest songs I've heard in a long time. Just in case you're thinking that Mindy Smith is just another pretty voice, she wrote or co-wrote most of the songs on this CD and her songcraft is excellent. This CD is consistently quite good in every way and if you like this musical genre or are open-minded musically, I think that you will enjoy it very much.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-05-21

Wonderful songs in a folk/pop/acoustical mix that works on many levels. Mindy's voice is just beautiful. (Think: Shawn Colvin) The lyrics tell stories, the songs are all unique.

3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-04-26

I have only recently been exposed to Mindy Smith. A few of the songs on Moment to Moment really grabbed me very quickly. That album is most satisfying, the vocals pure and natural and very beautiful.
Long Island Shores...the title song is the the only song worthy of Mindy's voice. My impression is that the folks advising Mindy advised that she go with the cliche vocal stylings which are currently pumping sales for others. I was turned off almost immediately by Mindy's apparent abandonment of her natural style. She has no need to emulate anyone.

4 out of 5 stars quietly stunning.......2007-03-21

I've loved Mindy Smith's voice from the first time I heard her version of "..Berkley Square" on an album that showcased new talent. I've wished she'd sing a few more standards with that incredibly rich voice of hers.
I love this album...it's quiet and understated in her usual style but few singers today sound as true as she does and as honest.
