Perfect for the Season.......2005-11-19

I purchased this years ago and the enjoyment has grown every Christmas. Handel's Messiah is beautiful, The Nutcracker is a classic and the arrangement of hymns conveys the true wonders of the season. While there is a place for pop carols, these classics should be in every Christian's music library. I loved this so much, I actually purchased a complete replacement set when I lost one of the discs. Certainly an excellent value that any music lover would treasure.

FOR WHISTLING OR SINGING ALONG.......2003-12-28

The gifted Richard Hayman (Boston Pops arranger for more than 30 years) offers an interesting collection of holiday favourites. The back cover says "Orchestra and Chorus" - beware, there is no chorus. The sub-title "Philharmomic Symphony Orchestra" is rather pedantic. Why not simply "Richard Hayman and His Orchestra"? The opening and closing numbers are sing-along medleys... the liner notes offer the words. Two Leroy Anderson numbers receive a fair treatment: SLEIGH RIDE and SONG OF THE BELLS, the latter being played rrather slowly. There is a beautiful rendition of MUSIC BOX DANCER, the only version I know that uses the music box. The counter-melody is too loud and takes away the charm of the main theme. A few compositions by the conductor himself. A great collection for tree-trimming, whistling or singing along.

Great CD - Received Damaged.......2007-06-27

This CD was to be used for my May 19,2007 bride for her ceremony music.
The CD arrived damaged and Amazon did not have anymore in stock.
Thank God for an understanding bride.

Disappointing.......2004-10-31

A mostly music compilation that sounds like a creative mixing genius put it together. Saddly, the wedding entrance march is sung in German (I think). Some of the music is a little "thin" instead of being "full bodied". The wedding exit march will put listeners to sleep. I wish listening samples had been available or I would have saved the money.

One might expect a love song to be passionate and pretty, but the Utah Saints have instead delivered a cut that is cold and dispassionate. Tweaked and filtered throughout this mid-tempo trance-ish track is a raspy male vocal sample, repeating, "this is my love song, baby, I'll sing it for you." The first couple of listens left me unimpressed, but the song's detached minimalism has since grown on me enough to consider it "alright".

The One Rascal New Vision Mix is excellent. Albert Cabrera has taken this unremarkable song and transformed it into a work of beauty, even while retaining the original vocal refrain. A hard, smooth, conventional beat drives the entire remix. In the first half, a lonely, descending string sound sings its melancholy melody amidst various disco-esque elements. The mood dramatically rebounds in the second half, as you are rushed to paradise, flying atop shimmering pads of evocative sound.

The Maverick Olsen Mix is not bad per se, but there is nothing especially worthwhile about it either. It is done in a style of trance that really does nothing for me, although your mileage may vary. The "love song" vocal, ugly as ever, is tweaked to differing pitches, altering its quasi-melody. At one point, it is lowered deep into bass territory. Indistinct female vocals are also added in the background.

Just one omission.......2001-02-02

There is another recording of "Goodbye" by N.Melba on Victor 95012,released in the US in 1905.I wonder why it is not included in this "complete" Romophone release?

Just how much Nellie Melba can one take at one sitting? Judging by this set an awful lot and that is no mean achievement given the unflattering recording, and Melba's maddening habit of recording an aria again and again. Melba's singing lacks charm - judging from contemporary reports the lady could boast little of this anyway. But it has an astonishing technique, a limpid and glorious tone, and at times some indefinable but terribly moving quality. A great, great singer - in fact for my money marginally the best on record.

In a class by herself.......1999-11-23

Melba achieves perfection more often than any other singer (with the exception of Pol Plancon). Her phrases, her high notes, her ritardandi are beyond conventional emotion and beauty. There is something almost otherworldly in her best moments. In the grand Puccini arias, she seems at first too cool, too controlled. But you soon notice her supreme artistry as well as the fire, the sheer physical force just beneath the utterly smooth surface. In fact, she is sometimes more explosive, more dramatic, than the great Callas herself. And she gives so much of herself! In the Boheme arias, her generosity is perhaps most apparent. In marveling at one perfect top note after another, one almost does not realize how cohesive she can make the pieces seem, how architectural and intelligent her approach is.

Only One Melba.......1999-02-12

That was certainly Dame Nellie's assessment of herself, and she must have been something. Yes, both Peach Melba and Melba toast are named after her, and yes, she was worshipped. Even such a curmudgeon as Bernard Shaw could appreciate her greatness. Puccini praised the fact that she sang HIS music, not "Melba-Puccini." So why, then, do her recordings not reveal to us the scope of her artistry? Granted, we can marvel at the technical accomplishments (listen, for example, to the "Hamlet" mad scene, or "Sweet Bird") and occasionally catch a phrase that makes us understand what she was about, but she lacks the grandeur and opulence of Ponselle, or the tender vulnerability of Galli-Curci. It may be that Melba was, after all, an artist of the theatre, and that the cramped, primitive conditions of early recording studios simply did not inspire her to her greatest work. However, for devotees of Golden Age voices, this Romophone set is indispensible. The transfers are masterfully done, so that even those allergic to the acoustic sound of early recordings will not be bothered.
