Eve Records: An Evening of Trance 3/5
You'll find that producer Pablo Gargano knows how to craft hi-energy trance with oddly subtle melodies, a combination that allows fast-bpm fare to remain listenable on the ol' stereo. Nearly all the pieces here follow that formula, with tweaky acid underpinnings and reasonably obvious vocal lines ("energize your soul" on "Electro Shock"). An Evening of Trance has a style that fit the general sound of a few years back, when this was originally released.

Whoop Records 3.5/5
Whoop willingly busts conventions in music, evidenced by the title track "I Need You" by Naked Ra, a techy-breaks number worthy of the full eight minutes given here. Dittos to Skynet's "Way of the Wave," a shimmering disco nugget which would be labeled tech-house now. Add in Redanka's fantastically dark, druggy "Sonic Strategy" (with a completely different second act) and the obligatory prog-meets-NASA- dialogue tune "Saturn" (done well) for a rock solid package.

BPM Dance - Jinx the System 1/5
Ah yea, time to "get up" and feel the "power" of "the finest funk," "one-two-three-break!" You'd better be ready, we're coming correct with all these samples and more. Cue the blow horns (Perfect Phase "Horney Horns"), fire off those drum rolls, here's the breakdown, now scream! Except you're not in a club, and if you were you'd probably walk out of this one. Trilly trance, b-movie samples, voice-overs by MC Pleasegoaway, by the book production...lowest common denominator dance music.

Platipus Records 3/5
Platipus Records have certainly been at the forefront of the trance scene for neigh on a decade. The Evolution of Trance includes most of their big guns. I Ching's warm, coaxing "Ways of Love" may be their most evocative, thanks to a steady bass throb and fresh drum programming. Ambassador doesn't break new ground on "The Fade," but seductive whispering over a beat always works. And Art of Trance's "Madagascar," despite a breakdown that takes longer than the human genome to unravel, was everywhere back in the day.Since most of these pieces were recorded years back (and this mix in 1999) your appreciation will depend on how much knob twiddling, synth tweaking and blippy melody lines you can take ("Easter Island," "A Night Out"). The style then, now generally passed over for faster, more euphoric fare. Disappointingly, this contains only nine tracks from their quality catalog and a little over an hour of music.

Choo Choo Records volume 1 5/5
This certainly arrives at a time when a swift kick in the [rear] of commercial trance is needed. British DJ via Australia Anthony Pappa burns through a set of dark, energetic matter perfect for prowling the night. If it plays remarkably consistent for a label compilation, that's with cause. Nearly all the artists listed are aliases of label founders Barry Gilbey and Sara Whittaker, most notably Mara. Equally graceful and menacing, not a duff cut clogs the bunch, from Pappa's own tripped-out `Interference' to Cass's driving `Emotion Surfer.' A dirty, warped rub up of Choo Choo's (probably) biggest success, `One,' sends the mix home. An essential pickup for fans of moodier trance, or those wanting the throbbing pulse of progressive house turned up a notch. This shouldn't be missed.

Best of Limbo Records 3/5

Nice little package here, two discs chock full of tunes from the Scotland label and stirred up by some reliable chaps. Fade (Chris Fortier, Neil Kolo) grab disc one, thankfully including some of their own pieces (eastern-inflected "Heaven to Heaven") and remixes. The Soul Surfer/Fade team up "Slip" proves feel-good trance with fun lyrics can be done without insulting an audience. Add in mellow M31 "Galactica" and dark, twisting "I Trance You" to complete a thoughtfully laid out set.
Scott Stubbs handles the more euphoric tracks, trance which twists in every direction. That sums up Inkfish "Agony Aunt" quite well, also Fade's soaring "No Resolve" and Seafield's "Feel Free". The hour peaks on a high note with a series of X-Cabs remixes. Only one track grates, the high-pitch wails of Gypsy "Varisuvia" that goes on forever. Disc 1: 4 stars Disc 2: 3 stars

Money well spent..........2002-03-14

Although it doesn't out-do Volume 1 how can you beat 7 great CDs for 24 dollars? I'm kidding of course. The idea behind this set is really unique in that it features mixes of music produced by various record labels in the trance/house genre of music, such that each CD represents the best of a label mixed by some pretty damn good DJs. Among the labels featured you have Eve, BPM, Choochoo, Whoop, Limbo (2 discs), and the well-known and respected album Platipus.

Scott Stubbs, a Topaz favorite, has the honor of mixing two of the 7 CDs in the set. Stubbs is a solid experienced DJ out of Vegas and with due respect probably has the best two mixes from the box set which surprised me because I ranked his mix 4 out of the 6 from Volume 1, not because it wasn't good but because Moda, Hamel, and Oleysyck blew me away. I have newfound respect for him with his Platipus rerelease and his Limbo mix. Nuff said.

The other mix that grabbed me right after the first beat: BPM Jinx the System mixed by Chris Fisher. I don't know Chris Fisher from before this CD but his mix of BPM's hits is driven and seamless like one of those ICE trains the people in Germany engineered: fast, encapsulating and comfortable. This one will stay in the changer for awhile.

Not to lump the rest together but for the most part the other CDs are mellower and represent classic trance: more to listen to than to dance to and so far they haven't captured me quite yet but I'm only on the 3rd run through and it usually takes me a little while to warm up to a mix.

The buy was worth it to me because Platipus sells ...in the stores and they throw it into the set as somewhat of a hooking headliner. It's been recommended to me before so I was all for it.

Lot's of non-stop trance/house spanning 7-8 hours for 24 blingblings even if some of the tunes are classic oldies in the genre. Good for the new and the vets.
