John McGlinn's sprawling, monumental three-CD set is about all the Show Boat any listener could ever ask for. In an obvious labor of love, McGlinn reconstructs the show as it ran on opening night, November 15, 1927, including every song, the original orchestrations, and all underscored dialogue. The most significant restoration is the dark choral number "Mis'ry's Comin' Aroun'," as Show Boat's serious subject matter helped establish its place as the most important turning point in the history of American musical theater. McGlinn also adds an appendix that includes songs cut before opening night and every song subsequently written for the show's many productions, most notably the love duet "I Have the Room Above Her," written for the 1936 film. (The recording is also available in a one-disc reduction called the "Broadway Show Album.")
Rest assured this 221-minute blockbuster is not just dry scholarship; it's also terrific listening, with McGlinn conducting a dynamic London Sinfonietta and a strong cast including Frederica von Stade as Magnolia, Jerry Hadley as Ravenal, Teresa Stratas as the tragic Julie, Bruce Hubbard as the worldly wise Joe, Karla Burns as Queenie, and David Garrison and Paige O'Hara as the comic couple Frank and Ellie. And of course the songs by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II are among the most glorious ever written: "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Make Believe," "Why Do I Love You," "Bill," "You Are Love," and "Life upon the Wicked Stage." Also included are exhaustive production notes, a history of the show, a detailed synopsis, and a libretto. John McGlinn's Show Boat is a staggering achievement and a recording for the ages. --David Horiuchi

An American Treasure.......2007-03-03
When PBS showed the 1989 Paper Mill Playhouse production of Showboat, my five year old daughter fell in love with musical theater. To this day we never miss a production of Showboat, West Side Story, Music Man, Oklahoma or the rest of the great American musicals. These 3 discs are the closest you can ever hear to the original in 1927 and the recordings are leaps and bounds above any movie version or revival cast. Listening to Bill or Make Believe you almost want to cry at what Kern and Hammerstein were able to create.
I defy anyone to come up with another Broadway production that has three songs in a row better than Make Believe, Ol' Man River and Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man (West Side Story's Maria, America and Tonight are the best three in a row of a movie musical) and it's a shame that no movie version of Showboat can compare to this version. The first act is full of songs that are as good as any ever sung on a stage and I can't think of another production with a first act that compete against the big 3 plus Cotton Blossom, Where's The Mate For Me, Life On The Wicked Stage, Till Good Luck Comes My Way, Misry's Comin' Aroun', You are Love, Act One finale and Why Do I Love You?. You just don't want to have the music stop.
If you don't like opera you won't like this version. Sung the way Kern and Hammerstein wrote them, you can't help but feel the operatic nature of these songs. Tough noogies because Showboat is above all an opera disguised as a Broadway play and no sweetening should be allowed.
The four leads are all superb, Frederica von Stade as Nola especially. The booklet contains the complete libretto and allows a different way to appreciate the music.
If you buy just one version of Showboat you need this one. If you have other versions of Showboat you need this one. As a matter of fact, anyone with ears to hear needs this version. A true American treasure.
DON'T DESPAIR. IT'S BEEN REISSUED!!!!!.......2006-11-16
One of the great recordings of musical theatre ever. Although it's no longer available on EMI Angel, it was reissued in October, 2006, as an EMI Classic's "Great Recordings of the Century." It's been "Digitially Remastered at Abbey Road Studios from the Original Masters" and "noise-shaped via the Prism SNS system for optimum sound quality." If ART remastering does for this recording what it has done for other EMI Classics in my library, then it should sound superb. However, I understand the booklet is not as detailed as the one in the original 3-disc release.
Thank you, EMI.
I would hope other labels would follow suit and remaster and reissue other examples of classic American musical theater. It would be a pity if our children, grandchildren, and future generations were unable to savor "110 in the Shade" or "Little Mary Sunshine" or . . . . . . . . . (fill in the blanks.)
An American tragedy...........2006-02-06
This is the first of the great American musical plays, and probably remained unchallenged until the mid-1950s when West Side Story appeared. The term "musical comedy" does not apply. The few laugh lines are subsumed by the terrible sense of loss and disaster that work throughout the story. At its core is homelessness, the destruction wrought by racism, bad choices, human weakness, and reconciliation. The cast?--this was one of the few crossover recordings I've ever heard that actually worked. The trio of Jerry Hadley, Frederica von Stade, and Teresa Stratas is a marvel; Stratas in particular seems to have had a patented Dark Cloud that shadowed her. It's perfect for Julie Dozier Laverne. And the late Bruce Hubbard brings a magnificent dignity and voice to Joe--his singing of "Ol' Man River" amy not efface Paul Robeson, but can stand beside it.
Gorgeous!.......2005-08-26
Simply gorgeous! The most unforgetable music and the best voices! An album for all time!

Get the record stright.......2007-01-01
This review is based on one song only, Apache. Mr. Ingmann is probably the prototype for a one hit wonder, but the guitar work on this song, in my opinion, is in a class of it's own. The timing, clearity and smoothness of the guitar work is unmatched. I have about 10 different versions of Apache, including versions by some of the biggest name guitar players in the world and none are close to Mr. Ingmann's. Especially the cheap effort by the Shadows. They sound like a high school band in comparison. Obviously the reviewer who thought their version was better did not consider musical talent in his evaluation. Many have tried to copy, which is the greatest compliment to the original there is. There are many ways to pick up a copy of Apache without having to buy this CD. But at least in my collection it is a must to own. If you have never heard the song, pick up a copy. You wont be dissapointed.
Apache Review.......2006-07-10
As with an earlier reviewer, I bought this CD beacuse of Apache. This was the original version. I've compared subsequent versions performed by the Ventures, the Surfaries, and the Shadows, and still find the original the best. However this version is also available on Billboard CD's.
Good but..........2005-10-16
Like many of my albums, I bought this for just one song. "Apache". I recently picked up the Shadows version and wanted to compare. Previous to that, I had only heard Jorgen's version but it was many years ago. While this original version brings back some pleasant memories, the musician in me has to agree that the Shadows arrangement is better.

buy this, it is so damn good. apache indian are now the most popular and most talented music artists in the USA right now. They have there own type of music like no other band. so damn good.
Know There's More to Apache.......1999-06-04
Odds are you're here because you've heard Boomshackalak on about 5 different soundtracks. Then again you just might have heard another cut from this album and liked it. Either way I just want to make sure you know that Apache Indian has a debut album which in many ways is stronger. It dosen't have the broadness of exploration that Make Way has, nor does it have the engineering mastery, but it does have a very heartfelt attempt to express what kind of artist Apache is, and what he is trying to express by bringing Reggae to the Continent. Look into 'arranged marriage' or 'chok there' on his first album "No Reservations."
Also you might try Shaggys "Pure Love" or anything by Dr. Alban.

******!Jerry G., leading one of the most astonishingly fluid rhythm sections in jazz, re-assesses Monk's music, digging deep into the rhythmic corners, and re-imagining some Monk standards as latin jazz. When Jerry's not being one of the three or four greatest conga players alive on the planet, he's channeling (a less laconic) Miles on trumpet and fleugelhorn, while Carter Jefferson piles on late-sixties Wayne Shorter-isms on tenor. All is laid over a continuously shifting carpet of astonishing rhythmic interplay between Jerry, bassist/brother Andy and trap drummer percussionist Steve Berrios, playing like a six-handed, six-legged mythic rhythmic demi-god.

Tight Beats, Repetitive Lyrics {3 Stars}.......2006-07-02
This joint is more like a 2.5 star LP, but a lot of the production is on point. This particular album dropped during the peak of the Flava Unit's popularity ('93). While Apache wasn't one of the more notable rappers in the crew, he had one of their biggest hits with the classic "Gangsta Bi***." While that track was bangin', there really weren't many others on the level of that song to be found. The production definitely reeks of that early 90's boom bap -- and it should since Apache, A Tribe Called Quest, Large Professor, S.I.D., Diamond D., The 45 King, and a few others dropping tracks.
The flaws are easy to point on with this album. I quickly grew weary of him rapping in vivid detail about sex or going on and on about his dills. It becomes rather repetitive after a while. Not only that, I think he bites Treach's flow. Also, there are corny interludes and songs like "Blunted Snap Session", "Kill D'White People", and "Apache Ain't Sh**" that weigh the album down.
Apache Ain't Sh** isn't necessarily a wack album. The beats are definitely on point, but whether you love this album or not depends on whether or not you dig these kind of lyrics over and over. I don't. There are a few gems, but nothing on this album to warrant buying it brand new unless you're just nostalgic and want some old hip hop. Even if that is the case, you can find something better than this album. I'm not too sure if this holds up all that well after 16 years. I recommend checking this out if you can find it used.
Standout Tracks: A Fight, Do Fa Self, Get Ya Weight Up, Gangsta Bi*** (My Favorite), Hey Girl feat. Milo & Collie Weed, and Woodchuck feat. Latee, Cee, Double J, & Naughty By Nature
good album.......2005-05-07
I remember watching the video for 'gangsta bitch' in 93 and I was like ''hahaha, this is a mad track'', and knew I had to buy the album. He was down with naughty by nature too. And his album was mad, he had some nice rhymes and his flow was tight. The album makes you laugh when you hear some of the sh#t he says. The tracks are nicely produced and have a naughty by nature sound to them. He also got it some sh#t with queen latifah which was funny as hell, and she made a reply track because she couldn't handle what he said. But anyway, if you are after some real hip hop, get this. Later!
prime hardcore.......2003-10-24
this is a intresting album, once you get a listen. it is a
classic of the hard core era. The Newark new jersy style is evident in apache's album. As a memeber of the flavor unit and NAUGHTY BY NATURE family he represents the hardcore and the real life

Simply one of the best latin jazz groups ever!!!.......2006-07-05
Jerry Gonzalez's Rumba Buhaina - The Music of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers SMOKES!!!! This has to be one of the all time greatest Bebop-Latin Jazz CDs, because it floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. Forget Tjader, Santamaria, and Puentes because Jerry Gonzalez & the Ft.Apache Band takes those heavyweights to task!!! This crazy fusion of bop and latin jazz produces a thrilling sound that transcends genre. If you're not a fan of Jerry Gonzalez & the Ft. Apache Band you will be after listening to Rumba Buhaina!!!
As strong as anything he's ever done.......2006-05-30
Jerry Gonzalez will be forever immortalized by his altogether remarkable disc under the rubric of the Fort Apache Band, Rumba Para Monk. By transposing the great bebop pioneer and altogether iconoclastic composer and pianist Thelonius Monk into an authentically Latin key, he practically created a new sub-genre of jazz, what might be called neo-Latin bebop.
And it unfortunately proved to be something of a dead-end, as this kind of thing often happens to be: instead of providing a new pathway to ever greater self-expression and musical adventure, Rumba Para Monk stood out as a kind of pinnacle or apex which subsequent discs, fine as they were, seemed unable to surmount, eventually resulting in the disbanding of a very fine, but increasingly etiolated, outfit.
Well, they're back (after a short and admittedly quite bracing venture by Jerry into Nuevo Flamenco) and better than ever. This is certainly the best thing the Fort Apache Band has recorded since Rumba Para Monk, except, perhaps, for that altogether brilliant disc, Earthdance, the last featuring Carter Jefferson, I believe. They're re-energized, tighter than ever, and leader Gonzalez seems to have recaptured that unique vision of blending jazz and Latin musics into something greater than the sum or their parts.
OK, no one will ever replace the great Carter Jefferson and I DO very much miss John Stubblefield, but Joe Ford (on alto and soprano sax) is playing better than ever, Andy Gonzalez has emerged as perhaps the premier Latin jazz bassist on the scene, Larry Willis on piano not only has sick chops but an incredibly deep swing, Ignacio Berroa cooks like a madman, and the leader is unmistakable on trumpet (especially muted, where he extends and pushes out Miles' message) and percussion. But here's the kicker: The group casually rolls out the deepest, swingingest grooves amid such killer melodic and harmonic sophistication as to have practically single-handedly dragged that somewhat lumbering creature, Latin jazz, willy-nilly, into the 21st century.
There are others--Danilo Perez, Dafnis Prieto, Omar Sosa, Susie Ibarra, Miguel Zenon, and Edward Simon come to mind--who have advanced the music in other ways, often by melding authentic national folkloric sensibilities with jazz, but no one has quite made the same move as Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band to integrate the whole history of Latin music with classic jazz all in the most up-to-date melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic setting.
And it doesn't hurt that these boys are reinterpreting some great classics by Shorter, Hubbard, Golson, and Monk, plus presenting some very attractive originals entirely within these aesthetic parameters.
All in all, a wonderful disc; certainly my comeback record of the year, and absolutely worth acquiring.
Back and cooking, even it it isn't "Rumba Para Monk".......2006-05-18
Ah, the Fort Apache Band is back on record, after roughly a decade (during which Jerry G. wandered to Spain, wrestled with some personal demons, apparently, and recorded a jazz/flamenco cross-over nearly rivaling Miles' "Sketches of Spain").
The six-legged, thirty-fingered monster that is the
A. Gonzalez/J. Gonzalez/Berrios rhythm collaboration is still cooking at an intensity that most bands need five or six players to manage. Here, they apply their skills to some material from the 1950's-1970's Blakey/Messengers book (more Wayne Shorter's compositions than anything else; NOT mostly the Blakey/Golson "standards").
The result isn't quite the astonishing revelation of Afro-Cuban rhythmic complexity that "Rumba Para Monk" was, (lo, those years ago) nor is it quite as polished. The exploration of the material doesn't seem quite as startling, in part because lots of people have been exploring Shorter's compositions in new ways in the last decade. Jerry's trumpet work still carries echoes of Miles, but his voice is becoming still more distinctive, as he refines it.
Nevertheless, as a band with greater longevity than most alive and working in jazz today, it's great to hear these guys again.
Get this, and see'em live if they come to your town.
Apache for life.......2006-02-13
I'm honored to be the first one to review this beautiful recording. The boys are back after a long while. Unfortunately, they are one Apache down. We miss you John Stubblefield. Once again though, Jerry, Andy, Larry, Steve, and Joe affirm their place in the halls of greatness with Rumba Buhaina. The Fort Apache Band is the greatest small afrocuban jazz ensemble of all times, bar none. Virtuosity, respect for tradition, mood, and purity, as usual. Maybe their finest? Bu would be astonished.

Album Description
On Rehearsing for Life, Karl, Billy, Dan, Jared and Sean fold rock, jazz, bluegrass and "jam band" into an unforgettable gumbo of sonic perfection. Recorded during a time of turmoil in America--hurricanes, war, job loss, and general discontent--this CD speaks honestly, but with hope. If the tracks "Sad World," "Too Young to Die," and "Nevers" don't touch you, then please check out--you have lost all feeling. The jazzy track "Heaven" and mysterious track "Brown Eyes in the Sun" are departures from previous musical efforts. The track "Dad" defies description, but will move everyone. The radio-friendly tracks "Young and Free" and "Superstar" round out this great collection of brilliant songwriting by Sean Kelly.
The whirlwind recording sessions took place during the summer of 2005 at Broken Radio Studios in Emeryville, California. Produced by veteran musician and producer Matt Boudreau (Seven Day Diary/Imago Records) and mastered by Michael Romanowski, this is the first time the Samples have utilized an outside producer in over seven years. "We wanted an all-new approach, all the way around," says Kelly. "Matt was wonderful to work with--fresh, innovative and focused. He took us to places musically where I don't really believe we have ever been."

AWESOME!.......2006-06-07
The Samples are amazing. This album is one of my favorites. This is a CD that you need to have in your collection!
Faith restored.......2006-03-08
I have been a long time Samples fan dating back to about 1990. I have always looked forward to the band's album releases until this one. Black & White was such a disappointment that I thought the line up changes and time had finally gotten the best of the Samples. I dreaded getting this album for fear there would be more disappointment. I was wrong.
After Return to Earth, founding member, Andy Sheldon, left the band. Sean Kelly has always been the main song writer, but Sheldon was a big contributor. Sheldon's songwriting and influence were definitely missed on Black and White. He was responsible for a lot of the etherial sounds over the years which gave the band part of its distinctive sound. After Black and White, I feared that the responsibilities of an entire album were too much for Kelly. Nevertheless, Kelly has made a full recovery on this album. He does some excellent work, this is a really good album.
The songs are a little more serious sounding and less bouncy, but Kelly's musicianship shows through. Rehearsing for Life has the same quality as many of the other albums, the songs grow on me as time goes by. After the first listening, I might have given the album 3 stars. Now with the chance to hear the songs a few times I give it 4.5 stars. Maybe in time it will rise to 5 stars.
Kelly should be commended for keeping his wits and the show rolling through line up changes and financial woes over the years. He seems to have come through the turmoil unbowed and produced a really good album. The difference between 4 and 5 stars is the lack of song that blows me away. That should not prevent anyone from buying this album, this album is quality Samples material.
Best In a long time.......2006-02-04
I've been a Samples fan for a long time, and I own nearly every one of their extensive catalog of albums. I've always been impressed with their musicianship, songwriting and musical and spiritual integrity. I'm reluctant to recommend any of their early W.A.R. releases, because it's my understanding that the label really ripped them off. Still, those early albums represent their best work for the most part, and classics such as "The Last Drag" and "No Room" are among my all-time favorite albums from any band. In recent years, however, I've noticed a slight decline-- call it a lack of inspiration-- in their music. As others have noted, their last effort ("Black & White"), while not a truly bad album, really didn't particularly impress me. The musicianship was certainly there, but it was as if the fire had burned out somehow.
All of that changes with this album. "Rehearsing For Life" has to be their best original studio album in years. Not only is it musically top-notch (as usual, of course), but it actually has something to say. I was immediately impressed, and the more you listen to it the better it gets. I'm one of that dying breed of people who actually sits and listens to music, in front of the speakers in a darkened room (though I'm inclined to believe that that's true of most Samples fans). All through this album, on my first listen, I kept saying to myself, "This is good! This is really good!" I really believe that in the years to come it will be regarded by die-hard fans as one of their best albums ever. Not their very best-- still not quite the equal of Last Drag (my personal favorite)-- but darned close. I hope this signals a return to form for the band. They've already survived a lot, and if they keep on producing albums of this quality they're gonna be around for a long time. Too bad most of radio today will continue to ignore them, but they'll keep on selling music to me, guaranteed. Highly recommended. Thanks, guys!
EXCELLENT return to form.......2005-12-21
True contender for album of the year.
I agree with the other reviews that this disc takes a few spins before it completely it absorbs you, as the listener. I dunno if it's the outside producer's influence, but a fire seems to have been lit under Sean and the boys. Highlights are 'My Guitar' (a new Samples classic), and my personal favorite, 'Nevers'.
A must-own for fans of jambands, or more 'contemporary' artists like Sting and Dave Matthews Band.
Buy it!!! You won't be disappointed.
Nice change from previous album.......2005-12-17
I have always been a big Samples fan, starting back in 1991. They have really been through some tough times, and not so good albums (Black & White). I have had this album for about 2 weeks, and listen to it every day. The songs are quite melodic, and appear to be fit for radio play. I honestly think that Sean Kelly has one the best voices in music today, but it doesn't appear quite loud enough on some of the songs (it does sound good though, but appears to be drowned out by the instruments). The piano is a nice touch to the songs, and helps to provide a fullness to the music.
Needless to say, I really like the album, and it appears that The Samples are are the right track, and I hope they don't stop making music....
