I have yet to find anything that Kunzel does on CD that lacks imagination and quality. His renditions are excellent. Mastering quality is outstanding - leading to a most excellent product on just about any stereo system. I would have to say that "Kunzel" on the label is equal to the quality you would expect from RCA "Red Seal" products.

Alex Lora and his band El Tri continue their 33 year onslaught on rocknrol. This time around they continue on the success of playing with a full orchestra, hence the title "Sinfonica II." The difference is that this time it is not a live recording but in studio with equally stunning results. The arrangements are a collaboration but primarily the maestro Eduardo Diaz Munoz has the honors. He is the musical and artistic director of the Orchestra Filarmonica Metroploitana and arranges the songs of El Tri in unison with the other eighty four instruments of the orchestra. It is a marvelous marriage of classic music and rocnrol. Throughout the disc Alex Lora's unmistakable raspy, coarse voice permeates the sweet sounds of the violin strings. It is like a counter balance, moments of pure orchestra suddenly mixed in with Alex's gritos y guitarrazos(shouts & guitar riffs) creating a synthesis that never tips the scales. The old time rocnrol flavor is further illustrated by the fine harmonica work of El Tri band member Rafa Salgado. The songs included here are many of the favorites that long time El Tri fans will quickly recognize. Such classics as "Perdedor" with it's salt of the earth lyrics, "Ya Estamos Hartos" in typical Lora rebellious fashion, "Todo Me Sale Mal" Lora's famous anthem inspired by those who try hard but never get the desired results, his autobigraphical "Escalvo del Rocanrol" and his homage to his Mexican people "La Raza Mas Chida" which is made of "Tequila and Mexcal and capable of laughing at itself." This is a fun disc that mixes humorous lyrics with political bite all the while having a good old rocnrol time. An additonal bonus is that this is an enhanced CD that has some good media included. In the interactive visual section there is much to explore on your computer including the long history of this 33 year old band, a Alex Lora "philosophy" session, a musical number and a section that is updated periodically. If you've never heard of this band take a listen, there is a reason why they have been around since 1968. Mexico's answer to the Rolling Stones these veteran rockers are in for the long run as they continue to create classic productions. Try this rocnrol and classical hybrid without airs for a foot stomping, romping good time.

Como fan de El Tri, considero este el mejor album en vivo de la banda. Creo que fue una excelente idea mezclarle sinfonia a la musica. Esto hizo el album un hito en la carrera de El Tri.

    Ciertamente en esta producción se puede escuchar notablemente que el Nano ya no es joven. Sin embargo, esto solo añade más consistencia a su voz. Siendo sincero, el problema está en el acompañamiento. Los arreglos no son para nada apropiados. Parece como si le hubieran entregado la responsabilidad a un recién graduado! Secundo a quien dijo que las canciones pierden la naturaleza de fuerza y belleza que tienen en su composición original. Se podía hacer algo mucho, mucho mejor.

    Esto no habría sucedido si hubieran trabajado con Michael Kamen o mejor aun, James Horner!

    Hacer arreglos sinfónicos sobre temas "populares" siempre es un experimento complicado a los que normalmente les incluyen instrumentos "modernos" para hacer la "transición". Este no es el caso, aquí son absolutamente sinfónicos y muy respetuosos de las canciones, muy españoles también. Con un poco de atención e imaginación puede uno compartir con Serrat su idea e historia musical. Serrat es un trovador y su intención es principalmente narrativa, en su primera época eso se veía, en mi opinión y a muchos años de distancia, un poco empañada. Pero juzgar su inexperiencia de aquella época a posteriori, sería absurdo, como lo sería ahora hacerlo sobre su voz, que para mi es entrañable. Nadie conoce y expresa sus canciones como él, y su voz... caray, está llena de experiencia, de elocuencia y generosidad. Actualmente Serrat es un autor que maneja el idioma como pocos, todas sus recientes producciones presentan una continuidad impresionante y este disco sinfónico es un bello regalo que demuestra que no importa la fecha en que los temas fueron escritos, todos se funden con la orquesta de hermosa manera. Lo único que resta es dejarse envolver por letra y música, por el arte de Serrat.

    Serrat es el mejor, pero en este CD se ha perdido toda la majia que transmiten sus canciones en la versiones originales. Los arreglos musicales son malísimos. Joan Manuel sigue cantando magnífico. Yo esperaba un gran CD, desgraciadamente quedé muy desepcionado con este trabajo.

    Bien, convengamos que la grabación fue efectuada con una orquesta sinfónica, pero ocurre que los arreglos utilizados hacen perder fuerza a casi todos los temas. Entiendo que el problema radica en que ese puñado de canciones no son precisamente música sinfónica, por lo que las grabaciones originales tienen todo ese sentimiento que estas versiones en ningun momento consiguen. En cuanto a la voz de Serrat, el paso del tiempo se hace evidente, y este disco pone de manifiesto las cada vez mayores limitaciones de Serrat como vocalista.
    En verdad, siempre las tuvo, pero pasaban a un segundo plano como un detalle menor, "escondidas" tras temas espléndidos. Le doy dos estrellas unicamente por tratarse de Serrat con canciones suyas inolvidables en sus versiones originales, las que merecen el mayor de los respetos. Si este fuera el primer disco de Serrat que hubiera escuchado, me hubiese preguntado cómo pudo haber tenido tanta trascendencia y popularidad...

    The music heard here is nothing short of wonderful, let alone the lyrics. Serrat is quite a composer and poet. However, fans should recognize that his voice was never his forte. Serrat Sinfonico not only confirms that, but also we are forced to realize that his voice is showing its age. At times, Serrat sounds like a frail old man, especially when his vibrato seems out of control. That said, Serrat sometimes rises to the occasion quite nicely, showing some vitality and refusing to be obscured by the massive symphony orchestra behind him. Indeed, while the orchestral arrangements are at times very colorful, Serrats voice is always forward, clear and never forced to compete. Most songs included here are very well known, and quite possibly are his own favorites (three of them are sung and beautifully written in his native Catalan). Serrat Sinfonico has many good things that fans will love. While his voice may not be the same as in the past, his spirituality shines bright, just as an aging concert pianist who misses a few notes but still manages to touch our hearts.
