Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Legendary Anna Moffo .......2007-02-07

First of all, I must say that I am completely biased to Anna Moffo. I absolutely adore her. She was everything that little girls dream that a soprano should be. She was born to be "Violetta" with a spectacular creamy voice, beautiful phrasing and gorgeous physical features. Like the previous viewer, I like Richard Tucker and he was immensely talented. However, due to the softness of Moffo's voice - one wonders why she was not better paired here with Carlo Bergonzi. I believe theirs would have been a perfect duo. Anyways, this is a wonderful recording with strong performances from Tucker and Merrill. It is Moffo who is the star here and she really shines! The Rome Orchestra and Chorus is a fine accompanist and well conducted. Pick up this cd as you will be very satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best versions of La Traviata available.......2007-01-08

Way back in the 1960s, this was the first opera recording that I purchased (because I was a poor college student, I brought the "greatest hits" version rather than the full opera). It immediately became one of my favorite LPs (back in the days of vinyl recordings), and my dull needles on the record player (I could not afford to buy new needles so regularly) over time destroyed any recording quality. Even at that, I continued to enjoy this album for decades, even as the sound quality became degraded.

The cast here, in the end, is terrific. As others have noted, Richard Tucker's stentorian vocal qualities almost overwhelm Alfredo. On the other hand, Tucker's voice is a wonder of the 20th century, and I enjoyed listening to those vocal qualities even in roles for which he was not ideal. Robert Merrill did his usual splendid job, as Alfredo's father, Giorgio. Tucker and Merrill appeared together in a number of operas, and their voices, I think anyhow, work well together.

The young Anna Moffo is wonderful in this role. In the 1960s, she was one of my favorite sopranos. Her voice fits this part nicely. She was able to sing roles such as this as well as some coloratura roles. As many note, a lovely lyric-coloratura voice. She also portrays a character on this album. That is, one does not just get lush, pretty singing; one gets a characterization. Indeed, during her peak years, she was known as much for her acting as for her singing. In that, she combined the presentation of characters like a Maria Callas (whose vocal technique was not necessarily wonderful) with a voice that works well on the music, as a Joan Sutherland might (Sutherland, on the other hand, was hardly a quintessential operatic actress).

This recording is well done for the era. The conductor, Fernando Previtali, does a nice job of creating tension with the music, moving the action along smartly without a listener feeling that matters are rushed.

There are a number of fine renderings of Verdi's "La Traviata." From having listened to a number of these, I would say that this CD--with Moffo in her prime, Merrill providing his reliably excellent work, Tucker restraining his voice enough not to overwhelm the role, and the fine conducting of Previtalli--is one of the must buy sets of this classic opera. Well worth attending to!

5 out of 5 stars The best "Traviata".......2006-07-20

I've been seeking the ideal "Traviata" for years; of course, it doesn't exist - the different voices required for each act ensure that no singer can completely encompass the demands made by the role of Violetta - but it's fun searching. So far, I have discarded several (Scotto too hard and glassy of tone, Bastianini patrician of voice but unmoving; Domingo too burly of tone in a fairly generalised performance; del los Angeles scratchy up top - it's all a question of taste, I suppose) and hung on to the other RCA recording with Caballe, Bergonzi and Milnes (who sing beautifully despite some choppy conducting from Pretre) in combination with the indispensable 1959 live Lisbon performance, sensitively conducted by Ghione. This enshrines Callas at her best - no-one is anywhere near as moving - and her co-singers, Kraus and Sereni, are almost as good, but the sound is crumbly. Callas' 1953 Cetra rcording allows us to hear her in good vocal condition but her Alfredo and Germont are inadequate and Callas is not yet the artist she became in this role (it was the contractual obligation not to re-record Violetta for three years after this that deprived us of a studio EMI set with Callas). I also love Beverly Sills and Panerai in the EMI recording conducted by Ceccato, but I'm afraid Gedda is far from ideal as Alfredo (see my review).

Now I have finally (!) discovered this 1960 recording, which seems to me the best studio version I have heard. Moffo is fleet, agile and silvery - Caballe, by comparison, as is often the case in early Verdi roles, sounds too mature, despite some lovely coloratura - and acts wonderfully with her voice, whispering the letter scene - even if she cannot rival Callas here. Merrill is much more interesting than Milnes, who simply sings nicely. (Apparently Merrill began to inject some emotion into his performances after being fixed by Toscanini's gimlet eye and being asked, "Have you ever been a father?". On being told, "No, Maestro", he harrumphed, "It sounds like it"; thereafter Merrill tried harder, and it shows in this performance.) I can understand why some prefer Bergonzi's elegance in this part to Tucker's rather stentorian manner - so do I - but Tucker's is nonetheless a skilful, finely judged assumption of the role; Tucker fines down his tone when required and he is such a good musician. True, Moffo scoops a bit too much for my taste but otherwise I love her voice; she comes as close as anyone to mastering all the notes and staying wholly in character. The "Living Stereo" sound is wonderful, the documentation full and interesting, the singing superb; this will be the one I listen to most often, always remembering to take down the Callas recording occasionally just to hear "Ah, dite alla giovine" sung to perfection.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Simply Beautiful.......2006-06-20

My favorite La Traviata ever. Anna Moffo's voice is clear, lyrical and beautiful. The rest of the cast is also excellent. You canno go wrong here.

5 out of 5 stars A Dreamy, Golden Traviata.......2006-01-08

Violetta Valery is a much sought after role for sopranos and she is perhaps Verdi's most popular opera heroine in Verdi's most popular romantic opera. Sopranos are a matter of taste and bring a different interpretation to the role. Maria Callas sang Violetta in the 50's and was considered the finest. Her huge, dark, wobbly voice may not have always been beautiful, but she got into character as good as Sarah Bernhardt who originated the role on stage. Other equally dramatic Violettas include Teresa Stratas and today's Angela Gheorghiu- huge, dark voices and dramatic portrayals. More lyrical and softer-toned Violettas include those of Beverly Sills and Valerie Masterson. Singers like Joan Sutherland and Montserrat Caballe combined both beauty and drama. But Anna Moffo is an acquired taste. Hers is a light voice, but there is absolutely no doubt in anyone's mind the magnitude of her power. She sang with dramatic integrity and her looks and charisma heightened the credibility. Violetta was her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in the late 50's. This recording finds her in great shape. She sings with touching pathos, beautiful voice and unbeatable pianissimi and diction. Anna Moffo has a magical quality to her performance, she never borders on melodrama, retaining excess within control. She is a first-rate opera singer. She is supported by the Alfredo of Richard Tucker, whose voice is grand, elegant and masculine. While he is older and his voice shows maturity, he knows what he is doing and is a wonderful artist. However, it would have been nice if Franco Corelli, Fritz Wunderlich, Nicolai Gedda or Carlo Bergonzi were cast instead because those voices better capture the youthful spirit of Alfredo's passion. American baritone Robert Merrill sings with his usual brilliance. His is a masculine, ardent and paternal, quintessentially Verdi voice. Perfect! The sound is great since this has been beautifully remastered from the old LP. The music sings with passion, with beauty, and the romance of this touching story has never sounded greater. It's a must have for opera fans. It was the first opera that really moved me. It's the simple love story of a courtesan and her sacrifice for the man she loves. Because Alfredo's father Germont dislikes the courtesan, he makes her give him up. When she dies of tubercolosis, it's too late. I have always liked this opera more than La Boheme (Mimi also dies of TB only she's not a glamorous courtesan). A great recording. Buy it today.

4 out of 5 stars Try to be fair........2002-03-07

The previous reviewer is such a Moffo groupie that she can't see past her prejudices. First, Anna Moffo was not robbed. She had a long and glorious career and well deserved fame. Her performances
of Violetta are among the greatest on record. However, Callas and
Sutherland do hold the palm for this role. Callas' great dramatic
interpretation and Sutherland's glorious golden voice simply cannot be bested by any other artist, no matter how great, and Moffo was great. So Joan and Maria get five stars and Anna gets four. And the remark about "the opera buffs-a bunch of queens".
THAT is a totally biased and totally uncalled for comment. SHAME ON YOU!

5 out of 5 stars She could have done it!!!.......2000-09-14

She had the golden voice, the acting ability, the looks of a movie star...why did she failed? Think she was robbed. If Sutherland and Callas did not show up, she would have been the Queen of Opera, bar none. She can sing Sonnambula, Traviata, any of Puccini's heroines, and she had the voice, the most gorgeous face and figure of all opera singers, bar none, and she did have the top notes also, to F altissimo, though her voice is perhaps not as gorgeous as Sutherland's, but who does? But she never quite got there , due to the snob fans...you know how the opera buffs are, they are all a bunch of queens... You have to check out her Violetta and her Lucia although, it's is the compromise between the perfect voice of Sutherland and the heartbreak of Callas, brava, La Divina, in Violetta, Callas is Violetta, by far in this signature role I and all others think, BRAVA, BRAVA!!!!!. Why Moffo never achieved the legendary status I don't know, but maybe it is all in the press.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2000-06-04

Thomas Linley Jr. (1756-1778) was one of the most promising young english composers at his time. He was like Mozart a wunderkind, born into a very musical family. He was also a student of William Boyce (1711-1779). Unfortunately Thomas Linley Jr. died in a boat accident only 22 years old. The english musicologist and conductor Philip Pickett (the leader of the brilliant original instruments orchestra New London Consort) has formed the theatre-ensemble Musicians of The Globe in order to perform music written for and inspired by Shakespeare's plays. The music is beautiful, the performances are superb, and the recording is excellently balanced.

This CD is not for conventional types....this might be what "The Doors" would be doing now if they were still together (not really but you get the idea).

With that said, everything about this CD is cool. From the peculiar but beautiful accent of this Argentinian born, Mexico City indie music protagonist...to the Be-Bop version of Moncayo's "Huapango" performed with a tantric repetition of the name "Popocapetl", and from her stoic expression on urban poems to her Chabuca Granda like voice on Nuevo Tangos....this album is anything but ordinary.
