This set contains the two CDs that, it must be acknowledged, just about started the Chant craze in 1994. The music was actually recorded in the 1970s and 1980s (this new set has been remastered and sounds better than the 1994-95 releases did) and was on sale in Spain and offered at the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos for some time before it became "hot." Since then, hundreds of CDs of chant and similar music have appeared, many more polished then these, but perhaps these were so special because they weren't performances: they caught actual Monks in the act of praying, and the meditative quality is undeniably real. Whatever the case, this is music for reflection, calming down, re-fueling and getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life--which may be even more needed now than they were 10 years ago. Texts are not supplied and you won't need them; it's all about reverence and mood. Doing nothing but listening to this in 25-minute chunks will allow your breathing to slow and re-energize you. Each 55-minute CD will probably put you to sleep--and this isn't meant as a criticism. --Robert Levine

4 out of 5 stars Superb relaxation.......2007-04-01

This is a wonderful compilation. I greatly enjoy listening to it when I'm working on painting or another activity where lower blood pressure is a must. Having two albums in one makes the deal even sweeter. If you alreaddy own Chant I and II, then there's no real value added, but with mine lost in a move, it was a great return of music I enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars What a recording.......2006-12-01

Mystic, eternal, and meditative is how I would
describe these chants, a most perfect gift
for Christmas. This reissue sounds even better
than the ones released in the mid 90's.
I would highly recommend this recording to anyone.
The only rule is sit down, or lay back and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!.......2006-01-25

BUYERS BE WARNED - this set should not purchased in lieu of the two original Chant CDs but rather as a supplement to them. Because although both the Amazon.com editorial review and one of the two reviews available for the Anniversary Edition both indicate it is nothing more than a remastered version of the original two Chant releases from 1994, a thorough check of the track listings at Amazon.com (and at angelrecords.com) demonstrates that this is not the case. The sequence of tracks is completely different and there are numerous tracks that appear on one of the original Chant CDs but not on the Anniversary Edition and vice versa. The most complete is the first of the two original discs as all but two of its nineteen tracks appear on the Anniversary Edition. Chant II has less than half a dozen of its tracks appearing on the Anniversary Edition.

However, this complaint aside, I love the Anniversary Edition. Although the track sequence is different from the original Chant CD and I find myself expecting certain chants to follow others, I will in time get used to the differences.

Moving on, this is not complicated material. There is no polyphonic, raucous, symphonic accompaniment. There are no rowdy, raging guitar riffs from the likes of Pepper Keenan or Jeff Loomis. There are no ultra-funky looped drum beats, booming bass, or rapped socio-political venom from the likes of the Ice Cube or Public Enemy. There is neither a Cecilia Bartoli nor a BB King to sustain things by sheer virtuosity. There are only the exquisitely simple, melodic sounds of monks singing/chanting in Latin in a great, grand hall with nary a trace of echo to be heard. This is gorgeous, sublime, invigorating music to soothe the sores of the soul and heal the hardened heart. The raw honesty and utter conviction of the `performers' on these two discs drive these pieces home with a power that more practiced and polished performers dare not dream of. Even with no transcription or translation of the chants inside the booklet, this is music to be enjoyed by everyone.

My recommendation is to procure Chant: The Anniversary Edition immediately and be thankful that such simple and supremely powerful music exists to bring some light into our seemingly ever-darkening world.

Thanks for reading.

The other reviewer obviously does not realize that this is a re-release of both Chant I and Chant II. They have also been remastered. I highly recommend purchasing this 2-CD set because the quality is better than the originals, and the price is usually better than buying the first two separately. I wouldn't be without this in my music collection. Please do no let the ignorance of others keep you from experiencing this beautiful, ethereal music.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite.......2007-05-16

OK, no question about it. This is my favorite CD of the series. Saturday Morning Confusion is the family man that I have "grown?" into. One Fine Morning still cranks me up. The two cuts from The Five Man Electric Band are both great songs. Go Back by Crabby Appleton is a real rocker. Every song is strong in its genre.

If you want to try to remember the 70s, this is a good place to start. Every song hear was played on the same radio stations before everybody became so "specialized". This disk is plain fun!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good mish mosh.......2007-04-15

From the truly great- Buoys and Lighthouse- to the good - Pipkins, Lulu, 5 Man Electrical band (twice), Stampeders, Brewer and Shipley, there's a decent amount of good material here. The rest is pretty forgettable. I bought it for Lighthouse's great "One Fine Morning" and the Buoys catchy song about cannibalism "Timothy". No accounting for some people's taste! 3.5 Stars.

5 out of 5 stars Memories..........2006-10-20

Gone are the halcyon days of my youth when my friends and I could actually call the local radio station and talk to a live, record-spinning, human being. As young girls, we often requested a crazy song about 2 boys who, "trapped in a mine what had caved in" [sic] and suffering from the delirium of hunger, cannibalistically devoured their friend "Timothy". In those days we could count on hearing it played in the next 15 minutes.

You'll never get that kind of service or subject matter again with Clear Channel. I miss the 70s.

4 out of 5 stars Canada Gold.......2005-12-23

As I've stated many times before, there was three types of music I listened to growing up. Innovative British, pop American and unique Canadian. Unique didn't mean it was better but your perspective was different depending on which part of North America you were from. We had cancon (Canadian content) rules for radio meaning that a certain amount of airplay had to be devoted to Canadian talent. Unfortunately most of this talent couldn't or didn't break into the lucrative American market and its too bad as a lot of it was very good. Lighthouse "One Fine Morning" was a smash hit here along with the likes of "Pretty Lady, Take it Slow, I Just Wanna be Your Friend, Hats Off to the Stranger,1849" etc. etc. etc. The same goes for Ottawa's Five Man Electrical Band with "Signs" and " Absolutely Right" also responsible for tunes such as "Werewolf, We're a Stranger Here, Julianna, Hello Melinda Goodbye" etc. etc. etc. The Stampeders "Sweet City Woman" followed with "Carry me, Devil You, Wild Eyes, Runnin' Wild, Oh my Lady" etc. etc. etc. The Buoy's "Timothy" was admittedly a strange little ditty but it got past the censors of the time and was a catchy tune. Ex Smith member Gayle McCormick's "It's a Crying Shame" was also a big hit here as well as its flip side "If Only You Believe" which was also recorded by The Free Movement. Check out some of the groups I've mentioned. You may be pleasantly surprised. Enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Have A Nice Day: Volume Six.......2005-12-19

To me this Volume Six of the h.a.n.d. series is unique and the reason is because I did not recognize the names of many of these songs but the few I did recognize; I have fond memories of so I decided to buy it and now that I own it I can say that I remember all but two of them. Most of the reviews you read are opinionated (including mine) and this Volume has plenty of negative reviews but I don't believe it is that bad. Lighthouse's, One Fine Morning, Stampeder's, Sweet City Woman, Crabby Appleton's, Go Back, Five Man Electrical Band's, Signs, &, Absolutely Right, and Gayle McCormick's, It's A Cryin' Shame, make this a decent Volume. As a long time music fan; I have found that on occasion; Top Ten songs do not appeal to me as much as songs that didn't make the Top Fourty and that is the case on this Volume. Another thing I have found out is that these twenty five, Have A Nice Day, Volumes are liked and disliked. It all depends on the individual and to me this one is ok.

Amazon.com essential recording

Voices of Ascension's Palestrina disc is something of a "greatest hits" collection: a dozen of the prolific composer's best-known motets--including several, such as Super flumina Babilonis, Tu es Petrus, and Sicut cervus, that many listeners will have sung in church or college choirs--and the legendary "Pope Marcellus" Mass. Yet the performance is not the slowly flowing honey usually served up by, say, the Tallis Scholars (as good as that is). Particularly in the Gloria and Credo of the Mass, Dennis Keene deliberately de-emphasizes the rise and fall of the different voices' lines in favor of a more naturally speech-like declamation of the long Latin texts. This means a surprisingly fast tempo--and some rhythmic spring and syncopation one might not expect in Palestrina. Some (not all) of the motets get a similar treatment: it works well in joyous pieces like the Pentecost motet Dum complerentur, but listeners might miss that melodic rise and fall in some of the slower works. The singers of Voices of Ascension are quite skillful, and the slight edge in their tone helps make the different melodies unusually audible. Very worthwhile, but not your father's Palestrina. --Matthew Westphal

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Palestrina Ascends.......2007-03-14

I am an active choral singer. I have been in countless ensembles, this interpretation of Palestrina (the greatest word painter of all time) is truly breathetaking. It's worth every penny and I also recommend the beyond chant albums.

5 out of 5 stars Palestrina unequalled.......2005-10-14

Beautifully sung CD with amazing selections. Palestrina was the real master of medieval/renaissance counterpoint and everyone else who came after him tried their best to imitate him. The way he writes for voices is surreal...you will see why he is known as The Prince of Music.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Inspiring.......2004-04-23

The music itself is truly awsome and the lyrics are soo deep. It's not just absolutely great to listen to, but a real trip to meditate on the meaning of the songs. Palestrina had a real reverence for God and his music just creates a sense of awe. Palestrina was a genius at creating varied vocal parts that are each interesting and beautiful to listen to. The different parts (bases, tenors, altos, and sopranos) have their own little melody and each part has its glory moment. Finaly when Palestrina wants to make and important statement he puts the parts into usison to spell out the most musically satisfying chords I've ever heard. And the voices themselves....ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! They are absolutely beautiful! Denis Keene is an amazing director; he never lets the beautiful chanting drag to much so that it keeps moving. However, on the slow meditative songs, Keene takes his time and lets the beauty of the voices create this mood of solemnity. Let me give you a sample of the lyrics of track #14. In Latin: "Peccantem me quotidie et non me poenitentem, timor mortis conturbat me, quia in inferno nulla est redemptio. Miserere mei Deus, et salva me." Which translates to: "I have been sinning every day, without repentence. [And Now] the fear of death torments me, because in the underworld there is no redemption. Have mercy on me, Lord, and save me." This music is some of the most powerful music that I have heard as a Christian and really inspires me.

5 out of 5 stars Palestrina Resurrected.......2001-07-09

Folks, I'm a long-time fan of the Ascension Choir, but Palestrina has always been at the top of my list of "Most Overrated Composers of All Time" (along with the 20th-Century's greatest ..., Igor Stravinsky) - until I broke down & bought Dennis Keene's exquisitely prepared "Prince of Music" CD. By restoring the pulse to the music and banishing that ponderous, thick choral sound traditionally associated with it, Keene brings Palestrina's art to life again and makes it sound completely NEW. It's like seeing rays of light suddenly streaming through an old stained-glass window. It's enough to restore one's faith, in the power of art, if nothing else. The choral sound is gorgeously balanced, strangely light and varied, always moving forward, a truly mystical euphony. I'm not an habitual writer of fan letters, but after several weeks of living with these performances, I just had to write this review. Mr. Keene, if by some chance you're reading this, thanks for a rare and wonderful pleasure: true musical grace captured on CD, there whenever my heart & mind long for it...

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Inspiring Performance.......1999-12-22

This is another great performance by Voices of Ascension, conducted by Dennis Keene. It has to be difficult to give a fresh interpretation to the MISSA PAPAE MARCELLI, a famous work that had been recorded many times, with excellent results. Dennis Keene chooses to use faster tempi, giving a different approach from the traditional solemnity that is typical in the interpretation of this repertoire. This change in tempo works very well, especially in the Gloria and Credo. The album also has other motets and offertories from Palestrina. TU ES PETRUS, DUM COMPLEMENTUR and CANITE TUBA are particularly notable, they sound positively joyful and exultant. The voices has a fresh and integrated sound. And it is a pleasure to have three bonus tracks from previous CDs, specially ALMA REDEMPTORIS MATER that is performed with great tenderness. It is obvious that they love the piece very much. The Renaissance repertoire fits the group like a glove. The performances of Voices of Ascension combine technical virtousity with deep interiority.

Naxos continues its L'homme armé series with Josquin's four-voice Mass composed around the 15th-century popular tune. This appealing work features an extraordinary triple canon in the final Agnus Dei--with a sound often compared to Philip Glass. The ever-inconsistent Oxford Camerata performs underwhelmingly--Summerly's slow tempos render some portions of the Mass tender, many others just sluggish. For example, at the end of the Credo, when the music goes from serene double-time into joyful triple-time, the change barely registers. The ubiquitous "Ave Maria" comes off better, if only because the singers must know it inside-out, but their performance of Vinders's beautiful lament sounds like sight-reading. For the Mass, the Tallis Scholars are worth the extra money; for well-performed-but-budget-priced polyphony, choose Summerly's superb Obrecht CD. --Matthew Westphal

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous music, Fine performance, Great price. Get it now!.......2005-12-09

This is glorious music sung wonderfully by the Oxford Camerata under the skilled direction of Jeremy Summerly. I am a huge fan of Josquin's music and consider him one of the great composers of all time. The group singing this has only a dozen voices and they sing with great clarity both in tone and in word. That, along with their intelligent shaping of the music, makes for a great experience when listening to contrapuntal music (music with multiple melodies in different voices).

When a mass is given a name like "Missa L'homme armé" it refers to an extant song that is used in the mass as a cantus firmus (an organizing principle before the advent of harmonic progressions). There is more than one version of the song "The Armed Man is to be feared" in different musical modes (too technical to discuss here), and Josquin set two of them that we know of. This is the version in Mode 6.

Also with this glorious mass we get a Josquin setting of Ave Maria, the fabulous Absalon, fili mi, and a Vinders motet on the death of Josquin. The Absalon we think was set at the request of Josquin's patron for Pope Alexander VI whose son (!), Juan Borgia had been murdered. This is a perfect text for such a family and contains a first in music. The text describing the descent into hell contains a harmonic progressing in a descending circle of fifths (into the flat keys).

All pretty wonderful stuff and at a fabulous price. Snap up this disk!

5 out of 5 stars EXQUISITE.......2004-11-09

As well as the mass and the chanson it is based on this disc provides a motet 'Absalom my son' thought to have been possibly composed to commemorate the death of the son of the Borgia pope Alexander VI, plus an Ave Maria in which I was overjoyed to find the lovely melody that I have known all my life to the words of the Marian hymn 'Ave coelorum domina'. On top of that there is one absolutely brilliant extra, not by Josquin at all -- another motet, by Jheronimus Vinders little of whose work survives, and likely a posthumous tribute to Josquin himself. This is a quite outstandingly beautiful thing, strong and rich in tone, perhaps the jewel of the entire recital. Josquin's own music here is of a 'continuous' type, like that of Palestrina and without the antiphonal effects that I have come across in other works by Josquin and after him his Flemish compatriot Lassus.

The text of the mass is in the usual sections, with the Agnus Dei given the full three times and not just two, making a grand and solemn finale. In addition there is a mediaeval Latin poem in rhyming tercets following the credo, which I take to be the 'Sequence', like the Dies Irae familiar from most settings of the mass for the dead. However the translation provided is quite inexcusably bad, containing so many errors that I am including an accurate version in this review (* below). The study of the classics has of course declined, but I should have thought that at Oxford if anywhere there must still be plenty of folk around competent to vet and correct a piece of Latin construe. In other respects the production is admirable, with a short but informative liner-note largely concerned with current theories regarding Josquin's year of birth but also containing material on the music and the performers. The recording is beyond complaint, and the performance is at least within striking distance of the best standard of the Oxford Camerata. There are 12 singers, 5 women and 7 men, which I take to show that there is one female alto and one male.

. The joyful day of the great leader, bringing the gift of new light, is celebrated today.
. Grace is given to the believing mind, and let whatever is brought forth from the doors ring in the ardent heart.
. Along this path from the east let us wonder at the face of the rising patriarch.
. The mighty seed of a great race has made him as the sun, most like Abraham.
. You see the attendant raven, and on the other side behold Elias inconspicuous in the little cave.
. When the axe is brought back from the belly of the torrent let it be recognised as that of Elias.
. The shining virtue of Joseph and the mind of Jacob that knows future generations have gone into making him.
. Let him, mindful of his own people, lead us ever into the joys of Christ everlasting.

4 out of 5 stars A Serene Beauty, Nice Sound, Great Price.......2002-03-08

This disc is a little mixed. For me, the 'Ave Maria' is kind of slow, and the final motet uninspired, but I love the mass. It's in a different mode than Dufay's setting, (the sexti toni referred to in the other review), which makes the tune more warm than manly, and this translates into the entire mass setting as well as Summerly's interpretation. At its best, this recording immerses me in what seems like a celestial ocean of polyphony, and I wouldn't get rid of it for anything.

4 out of 5 stars Not great, not bad - worth having at this price!.......2000-02-25

A quick note to Amazon - your listing is mislabelled, as this is the Sexti toni version of this Mass, not the Super voces musicales.

As Matthew rightly points out, this is not one of the Oxford Camerata's best performances. In their defence, it also is not one of Josquin's more exciting works. However, at the price, this is a very nice CD to have in your library - if only to compare this reading with the arguably better one by the Tallis Scholars. If you are looking for a better example of the Oxford Camerata's skill, try their offering of Thomas Tallis' Mass for Four Voices and Motets. All things considered, still worth 4 stars, but it's a CD that needs to be listened to without distractions.

The Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin is quickly becoming a favorite with piano connoisseurs, particularly in late Romantic music. In this live recital, Hamelin concentrates mainly on unusual arrangements: a Beethoven movement as recomposed by Alkan, a Balakirev reduction of a Chopin concertos movement for solo piano, Busoni's Sonatina which uses themes from Bizet's Carmen. You have to be pretty far involved in the late Romantic ethos to appreciate these obscure tidbits, but if you are, Hamelin's virtuosic and colorful performances will prove extremely attractive. The live performance atmosphere comes across vividly in this recording, as does Hamelin's tone. --Leslie Gerber

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing!.......2007-07-12

I have listened this recital, because of praises which written in this page. Very dissapointing. Actually Hamelin will stand among secondary rank in great pianists ad infinitum. He always shows that he "can play" this instrument. But nothing exciting or meditative or lyric...Just pure, superficial technic. My only favorite Hameline is the third part of the second concerto of Shostakovich. That was not bad. I think he is good as concert performer for one enjoyable night. But I can't believe that he can play Bach or late Beethoven or Brahms, adequately. He can only plays his eccentricities. Ofcourse one should also praise him for his "Alkan or Busoni effort"
You may want to hear just for Alkan's interesting transcription.

5 out of 5 stars Marc-Andre Hamelin Hyperion CD.......2007-04-10

This is a wonderful CD full of out of the way pieces most of us do not know exsist. I loved the Chopin/Balakirev transcription of the Piano Concerto #1. Also try two other Hyperion CD's of Nikoli Kapustin, One played by Hamelin and the other by Steve Osborne. This is jazz in a classical format and it will wow your shirt off.

5 out of 5 stars This is it.......2007-02-26

Hamelin is probably one of the greatest pianists ever, and his courage in championing such unusual and technically demanding material as Godowsky's Études turns him into one of the most interesting musicians today. As for this particular recording, it's needless to say that his playing is superb, as usual, and his technique is unassailable and immaculate. His choice of material is bold, to say the least. He starts off with a wonderful reading of Beethoven's third piano concerto and then goes on to overwhelm the listener with effortless and sublime renditions of works by Chopin, Medtner, Busoni and - oh my! - Alkan. I never thought I would ever come to like Alkan's works, but Hamelin's rendition of the Études are so effective and engaging that I began to take some interest in it. It's by far the best live recording I've ever heard and it certainly helped me redefine my ideas about what's possible for a human being to do on the piano.

5 out of 5 stars this recording is very great.......2007-01-29

This recording was for me entree Marc Andre Hamelin. I think then he must is most amazing of technic since Liszt. No I did ever to hear Liszt, but I am pupil of Kremova, and she tell all pupil word of Mme Ida Nagy "et bene audet" of maestro. Of this recording not only is there all notes (Kremova required us learn Alkan op 76 naught if ever we may dare of playing recital!) but Mr Hamelin his of playing so confident and of "fun" and of warm! This recording is the very great. Did M Hamelin in real there play Alkan Beethoven No 3 cadenza! I would fainted were I present real there Wigmore Hall! Here it is on this recording! I would fainted! Is true.
I say here so will not so wounding, M Hamelin not is good play our Rachmaninov and Scriabin. So will not so harsh be Rachmaninov and Scriabin of his other recording difficult for artist such as M Hamelin are not the technic but the music sensiblite. M Hamelin a youth.
So! A great youth artist! Let he perform now youth accord a his greatness!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2004-09-18

Hyperion recorded this CD from a series of live recitals given in June 1994, at Wigmore Hall. It is one of my favorite live albums. Hamelin performs Alkan's transcription of Beethoven's 3rd concerto, the Trois Grandes Etudes Op. 76, as well as Medtner, Busoni and a Balakirev transcription of Chopin.

Hamelin's performance of Alkan's Beethoven 3rd is a remarkable feat of the recording age. Most pianists would never even touch the work with it's brilliant 6 minute cadenza that echoes the finale of Beethoven's 5th symphony. To perform it live is quite another matter. It is uncertain whether the great Busoni played the work himself in a recital he gave in Berlin in 1906. Hamelin's is the only recording of Alkan's transcription I'm aware of, but it's probably the only one needed.

Balakirev's transcription of the Romanza of Chopin's first piano concerto is a loyal one. However, this is probably my least favorite track on the album. While pretty and thoughtful, it seems out of place in this energetic collection. Hamelin's interpretation is a bit too clean and cold for my liking. His technique is suitable to play tranquil pieces wonderfully, but here it just doesn't seem to work.

Alkan's Trois Grandes Etudes op 76. are some of the most technically challenging compositions in the entire piano repertoire. In Hamelin, Alkan has a faithful performer that is able to create the effects of a full-scale orchestra on the piano using a mere five fingers. Not only does Hamelin perform this work live, he does so flawlessly. The first is the 'Fantasie' for left hand alone, the second 'Introduction, Variations and Finale' for right hand alone. The final 'Rondo Toccata' is a dizzying piece, reminiscent of the final movement of Chopin's Funeral Sonata. The 30-minute performance of this work leads one to admire both Hamelin's pianism, as well as his physical endurance!

The Carmen Fantasy by Busoni is essentially a whirlwind tour of Bizet with the flair of Busoni. Hamelin could have let loose with this piece, but instead decides to let the work speak for itself. The result is a reflective piece that is filled more with the contrast of emotions than excitement. Hamelin's performance is good, but it would also be great to hear this piece played with more energy.

The final piece on this album is Medtner's Danza festiva No. 3. It's whimsical that brings the album to a joyful close. This time, Hamelin's dynamics are perfect and bring out the color and energy in the piece.

All in all, 'Live at Wigmore Hall' is a remarkable achievement that is well worth adding to your collection. Hyperion has done remarkably well in putting together this album. The sound quality is crystal clear, and the audience's rapturous applause really adds to the enjoyment.

This interpretation is a perfect match to Savall's equally beautiful Art of the Fugue. Here you find even more variety in the blend of instruments. I am not going to have only one version of this music and my first recommendation is Münchinger's more emotional recording on Decca. When it comes to colourful instrumentation, however, Savall is the winner, and the direction & playing needs no justification, it is simply wonderful, even if I doubt this folk music style reflects the spirit of the baroque era. The king's theme must have been very popular during the 18th century; you find it even in the song "Gråt Fader Berg" by the Swedish minstrel Carl Michael Bellman (1740-95).
