Album Description

Music's dramatic master of surreal color and subtle nuance throughout the 1960's and 70's was undoubtedly George Crumb. Works such as Crumb's Lorca cycle (Ancient Voices of Children, Night of the Four Moons, etc.) And his Vietnam War-era scores (Black Angels, Lux Aeterna) immediately won an international reputation, and were quickly taken into the standard repertoire of our century. Now, this musical legend has met his equal- and it's George Crumb himself, with another landmark composition- Quest. Quest is Crumb's first completed work since 1991, with its compositions occupying the composer for more than five years- 1989-1994. Conceived as a guitar concerto, Quest uses the guitar as a leading voice amidst an ensemble of soprano saxophone, harp, contrabass and an exotic array of percussion. Bridge's premiere recording features the work's dedicatee, guitarist David Starobin alongside a stellar Speculum Musicae ensemble that included legendary saxophonist, Donald Sinta. Also given premiere recordings are the last of Crumb's Lorca pieces- Federico's Little Songs for Children, (1986); as well as the 1976 revised version of Night Music I. In both works, Speculum Musicae accompanies the superb American soprano, Susan Narucki.

Not the cd to introduce you to G Crumb.......2003-10-22

I am a Crumb fan, although a fan of the music (sound) not necessarily knowledgeable of his compositional methods, the technical aspects to his music, etc. For those who arent into
studying Crumbs music, just listening to it, I recommend ANY other of the Crumb cds on Bridge Records, all of which are fascinating and well recorded. Of the Bridge series on Crumb, this particular cd is a conspicuous disappointment.

Voz a Voz has really made it BIG with this cd. This may be their debut album, but you can expect alot from Voz a Voz. I have to agree that they can be compared to Juanes, Juan Luis Guerra, and my favorite homebois, Aventura. But Voz a Voz brings thier own style with their music. This trio is the future of the music industry. Of all the songs on this cd that I have heard, "4 Dias Sin Ti" and "Cien Mil Razones" are my favorite. I would HIGHLY recommend this cd to anyone who enjoys listening to songs blasting anywhere from love and being heartbroken, to poverty in Latin America. This cd is very emotional. If this cd doesnt change your mind about how you view love and heartbreak, then I dont know what will.

This cd is wonderful for those who love spanish heartwrenching songs about love. It's a mixture of R&B, soul, and my favorite,
Bachata. Beautiful cd the singers all have excellent voices. Can't wait till the next album. Love you guys

"Presencia" - Justo Betancourt y su Conjunto Borincuba.......2004-11-23

Many people just associate Justo Betancourt with his great music. What many people don't see about Justo is that he was a great artist with a deep sense of creativity. You come to see it when you hear "Presencia", the title track. Later, he'll make you dance to a nice merengue, "Merengue a Quisqueya", and the hard-hitting "Ella Esta en Otra Rumba", one of my favorites. He'll then make you laugh with the slowed-down "Camaron" and "La Tapa al Pomo". I must say though that Justo Betancourt experiments with new rhythms and comes out awkwardly and falls short on "La Ilusion de La Vida", a song that should've been kept a bolero. Yet, one will be completely satisfied when they hear the deep, soul-penetrating lyrics of the boleros "Sicologia" and "Consejo del Alma". A nice, well- rounded album, recommended for 70's salsa lovers and Justo Betancourt and Borincuba fans alike.
