Colorful early music with pizazz.......2004-06-03

I'm always excited when Baltimore Consort release a new album, because I know it will be entertaining and will open up new vistas in musical appreciation. Adew Dundee is their second album of Scottish music (the first being their debut album "On The Banks of Helicon") and it's true to form.

The secular music presented here derives from manuscripts of early 17th century collectors like Skene (his Mandora MS) and Robert Gordon of Straloch, as well as 18th century collections such as Pills To Purge Melancholy (1719), Balcarres Lute Book (1692) and Panmure MS (1680). The title track "Adew Dundee" is a fine example of a typical delightful Scottish country air derived from these collections for the album. Then there are courtly songs and dances from the 16th and 17th centuries, many of which have a European influence, particularly from France. There is also a spritely "Scottish Branles" from French composer Estienne du Tertre.

Some of the music, like "The Gowans are gay", likely has its origins in even earlier times. A couple of songs, "A New Scotch Song of Catherine Logy" and "Adeu O desie delyt" will be familiar to Baltimore Consort fans as they are alternative versions of those from "On The Banks of Helicon".

This disc offers 56 pieces from 17th-century compilations, probably best described as early equivalents of the fake books that popular musicians use today. These dance tunes and songs were the pop music of their time, now turned into "classical music" entirely by the aging process. McFarlane bounces through these catchy tunes with great verve; he's obviously having a good time with the music. The mandora is a small member of the lute family, pitched an octave higher than the two other early lutes McFarlane plays. It sounds rather like a ukulele. There is no profundity to be heard on this disc, but it's highly entertaining. As usual with Dorian, the sound quality is superb. --Leslie Gerber

I love this CD.......2007-06-12

I'm a Baroque musician and also a massage therapist. This is one of the CD's I use when I do massage; I've heard it now hundreds of times, and it still delights. Some very haunting, beautiful passages and excellent throughout. I agree with the other reviewer's assessment that I've never heard a bad performance on a Dorian recording.

Liltin' lute.......2000-05-19

Ronn McFarlane is the perfect man for the job. These pieces for the lute and mandora are what you'd expect from the time and place they were written. Surprising how many of the tunes sound like they were written yesterday. On some you may want to kick up yer heels a wee bit. Sonically, this CD is a gem; crystal clear sound. I've lent this to several persons and so far I've heard no complaints. McFarlane's Dowland CD is highly recommended also.

As I keep saying, I have never heard a poor performance on a Dorian label, and their record remains intact with The Scottish Lute (DOR-90129) and Highland King: the Scottish Lute, Vol. II) (DOR-90257). Between the two, lutist Ronn McFarlane give us no less than 100 short excerpts from the different "Lute Books" that were so popular in the 15th to 17th centuries. There are even some examples of music for the mandora, half the size and an octave higher than a lute. This does not demand intense concentration and is excellent ambient music for relaxing or giving parties. I do wish, however, that more comprehensive notes were included and the multilingual text done away with to make room for them. But the playing is masterful and both CDs are highly recommended.

What we have here is a package consisting of unreleased tracks, a live song and a demo recording from 1992. Carpathian Forest is one of the very few Norwegian black metal bands that hasn't wimped out. You get different variations of their sound on the CD. Their infamous Bloodlust and Perversion demo has everything you would expect from a Norwegian band circa 1992: cavernous mayhem mixed with a sense of sadistic pleasure backed up by a raw production. Their style of mid-paced black metal hasn't changed much during the years, although it has progressed but without losing an inch of their grimness and identity. Plus, it's very easy to see how Celtic Frost has been one of their biggest inspirations. The live song, "Martyr/Sacrificulum" is savage and unrelenting, while the other songs contains the quality and burning rawness we would expect from this band. Excellent release, vital for black metal purists.

I disagree with the other reviewer, because this cd is great in order to complete the collection of CP works. the demo sounds.. well like a demo!!! they presented it in its original sound for the historic value of the piece, so enjoy!!!!

A plain rip off.......2004-08-15

This is what Id like to call "season of mist trying to make an extra buck" cause thats just what it is. I loved c.f.'s past works and was hoping this (tho not an album) would be another great release. Well I was wrong, it has a few cuts from albums that are pretty good songs, and then the TERRIBLE bloodlust and perversion demo, with production so bad you can barley hear anything and a drummer that cant play at all! Im seeming to be finding less and less in this senceless black metal....(excluding black metal bands with substance, ex. Leviathan (us)Xasthur, early darkthrone etc.)Not worth your money at all.

Good music is hard to find.......2003-07-30

I know one of the band members and I must say, this group is amazing. Their style is more, heavy guitar, with alot of good vocalization. Mostly, they just rock. Their lyrics are amazing, and the music flows well. They are just a good dance and sing to band. I have had the honor to meet most of the band in person, and I have recived Strong, their first cd. Suga-Lik is just well thought out and well planned. I recommend them. If you are ever in the vicinity of DC or Charlottesville when they are playing, I do recomend you see them live.

A Revolution.......2000-08-27

I first listened to Suga-Lik this summer, and I was instantly hooked. Clare Quilty's hardcore lyrics and angelic voice create the ultimate contrast. These songs are great to listen to after the break-up (or before, or during) and offer a sweet and sour girl-powered approach to indie-rock. This CD is intense and proves that boys aren't the only ones who know how to jam the hell out of it!

I felt bad that no one has reviewed this CD! I have only heard one song from it (i don't own this cd) and that was 'Hey Joey Jane' <---that's a really cool song. You don't really hear too many female groups that sound this good with a tight band.
