With a debut as smashing as their 1997 A Toda Cuba Le Gusta, the Afro Cuban All Stars would have to hit on all cylinders to not fall short on their sophomore effort. Alas, they don't hit the high marks that seemed so effortless on their debut, heading away from the earthy, complex body of emotions their horns carried and towards a style that reaches unabashedly for pop audiences. Of course, the pop audiences they address are old world enough to like their flute solos to be bombarded by big brass riffs and set off by crooning, sweet vocals. This brings up a key point: even a disappointing album by the likes of the Afro Cuban All Stars is better than most of what makes the airwaves, from Havana to Miami to Montreal. Aside from the more obviously polished elements, there are lots of traces of the band's debut, with the timeworn playing--especially on piano and percussion--sounding both overly commercial and terrifically organic. On many of these tunes, the cleanness of the sound draws the ear away from the music and towards the sonic varnish, the crystal clarity that in many cases would be cause for celebration. Here, it urges the side-by-side inspection of A Toda Cuba Le Gusta and Distinto, Diferente, the latter title signaling that the band has sought another terrain, maybe that commanded by Los Van Van prior to the rise of the Buena Vista Social Club and its roster of stars. --Andrew Bartlett

Excellent and different .......2004-08-22

This is simply wonderful music. I consider the first Afro-Cuban All Star album, A Todo Cuba Le Gusta, to be one of my all time favorites. After the close of the first track on A Todo Cuba Le Gusta, I was asking myself, Where have you been all my life? I had no clue that I liked Cuban music but this is just amazing and it made me want more!

I don't feel quite that way about this album. It is a touch less fiery and a wee bit closer to mainstream tastes but believe me, there is nothing mainstream about it. The musicianship is fabulous despite the stylistic change. It is well worth buying and a great introduction to Cuban music.

If you are new to Cuban music and your tastes lean toward the metallic side of rock, you might enjoy the first album more. If you enjoy things a bit calmer than a frenzy but want still plenty of excitement, try this one!

The Best of Today's Cuban Sound.......2005-11-08

This album 6 years in the making, 50 musicians deep, is electric exciting and truly a treasure. Juan De marcos, truly must have enjoyed creating this treat for Cuban music lovers world wide. From Tirso Duartes searing Timba sounds to Leo Veras Soulful son, there is no "skipping" songs on this CD. Enjoy

The Afro-Cuban All Stars' A Toda Cuba la Gusta was released at the same time as the landmark Buena Vista Social Club and Introducing Ruben Gonzalez. But whereas BVSC was more acoustic guitar oriented and Gonzalez's album showed off his jazz leanings, the Afro-Cuban All Stars' debut was the most in your face of the three, with big brash horn lines perfect for moving dancers around the floor. This double-disc live CD/DVD retains the intensity of past works, but the 18-piece band doesn't feature the array of stars that appear on the two studio efforts. Nonetheless, the group still sounds tight as a drum. The 12-song set here includes four songs from the first album and two from the second (as well as their version of "Chan Chan" as a closer) with the rest made of De Marcos's originals and a few Latin standards. "Tanga" starts things off on an energetic high note, but the laid-back (for this band) "Habana Del Esta" shows the leader's stellar arrangement skills. --Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

Juan de Marcos Gonzalez is a central figure in Cuban music today. His work with the Afro Cuban All Stars, Ruben Gonzalez Ensemble, Ibrahim Ferrer, Sierra Maestra, and the co-creation of the Buena Vista Social Club has made an extraordinary contribution to raising the profile of Cuban music internationally. When Juan teamed with UK label World Circuit in 1997 to record an album of big band music in Havana, featuring the neglected stars of the Golden Age of Cuban music, the result was "A Toda Cuba le Gusta" by The Afro Cuban All Stars, an album that was nominated for a Grammy in 1998 and went on to scan 173,000 copies. When Ry Cooder went to Cuba to record the Buena Vista Social Club sessions, he turned to Juan to assemble and direct the band for him. Juan also directed the BVSC in their only three concerts, in Amsterdam, New York City, and Mexico. He is now set to take center stage with the multi-generational Afro-Cuban All Stars with their new CD/DVD release: "Live In Japan". This is an 18 piece jazz influenced big band that captures the essence of Cuban popular music in all its glory.

You can't experience the Afro Cuban All Stars "Live in Japan" and not pause to wonder at the enormous force and artistic talent of Juan De Marcos González, its music director. He's an artist at the heart of Cuban musical expression and at the pinnacle of his vocation as a musician, writer, director and producer. He is no less than a cultural ambassador and icon of present day Cuba. Casting aside political ideology, he has undeniably helped to cultivate a re-emergence of Cuban culture that deserves nothing less than a Nobel Peace prize. Ok, so he might have to share it; so what.

The world's appetite for all things "Cuban" is rooted first and foremost in its musical heritage even as its legendary tobacco looms near. Unmistakably, De Marcos delivers this rich heritage to the world by meticulously assembling many of Cuba's musical legends and today's prominent musicians in spite of history, politics or ideological indoctrination. He remains a steadfast envoy of authentic Cuban music forms, the wave on which all music structured around its patented rhythms rides.

Perhaps turning to his tenure as a former instructor or as a member of Sierra Maestra, De Marcos demonstrates a penchant for injecting instructive doses of Cuban musical diversity and vitality. Part of his special touch lies in developing and showcasing young talent matched with the impeccable credentials of Cuba's music legends. He also offers his dancing and listening audiences Cuban classics mixed with newly pressed compositions. On this CD alone, De Marcos penned four original songs including the reprised and diplomatically appealing timba-son "Reconciliación," an appeal to Cubans to put aside their political differences and animosity for the good of Cuba. In "Distinto, Diferente" De Marcos reproves the many "imitators" of Cuban son for losing its sublime essence and vitality by rushing too quickly to the mambo and "coro or "estribillo" (refrain) sections of the arrangements. So many artists of the "salsa romántica" era became unwitting collaborators of the "rush" De Marcos decries and are now subsequently forgotten as if they never existed. There was little to distinguish one track or artist from another. Too much music of that era lacked originality, vitality and heart. It became dull and lost its sincerity, the essence of Cuban music. What salsa music lost in the 1980s, the Buena Vista Social Club abundantly made up in the 1990s with a return to sincerity and vitality, here Juan De Marcos and his fellow musicians left an indelible mark.

The significance of De Marcos' music direction is that he deliberately clears away the plaque and artifice that unwittingly characterized commercial salsa and which greatly contributed to the listener's confusion and numbing of taste and sensibility. He wisely lets the music unfold and marinate its distinct and complex rhythms so that his dancer's eager feet and hips are energized and their souls take flight.

It merits pointing out how seamlessly the 18-member jazz band, collectively known as the Afro Cuban All Stars, moves between Cuban music forms and periods. The CD's opening track "Tanga" demonstrates the group's mastery of Afro-Cuban jazz and offers an opportunity to listen to the promising genius of David Alfaro on piano. The multiple musical transitions in "Habana Del Este" are executed with agility and genuine excitement. A fan of son montuno, two favorites of mine are "Los Sitio Asere" and "Canallón", songs that can be traced directly to the bands of Arsenio Rodríguez and Félix Chappotín. If you wish to be swept away by the entrancing keyboard sounds of lead pianist David Alfaro followed by a sublime and hypnotic 3/2 clave, turn to "Amor Verdadero." There is a fair sampling of the Cuban musical past and present. There is enough history and energy contained in this CD to satisfy the calm listener and the eager dancer. I am especially impressed by the energetic and dynamic discourse of Luis Frank Arias' vocals. In short, this CD addition is a great chapter in what is unquestionably one of the most prolific periods of Cuban music. I urge those considering this CD to immediately add it to their collection and be especially thrilled with the bonus DVD of their live performance in Japan.

Magnífico!.......2005-08-09

This is just about the best value you could ask for your money, as far as the Afro-Cuban Allstars go.

True, there's no Don Ruben Gonzalez (if I recall, he'd passed away by this time), but Juan de Marcos leads a tremendous ensemble and some great singers in a performance that can get anyone up and dancing.

Covering some of the songs from "A Toda Cuba le Gusta," as well as other traditionals, the group is in full swing, moving effortlessly from full-horn blare to delicate piano soloing to crowd participation.

My sentimental favorite will always be "Maria Caracóles" from the first album, done up in great fashion here, but a close second is definitely "Chán Chán," whose syncopated chorus makes for a seriously driving finale.

While "A Toda Cuba..." had great musicianship and nice studio polish, "Live in Japan" brings the showmanship and immediacy that only live performance can.

An excellent recording, and the best part about it is the accompanying DVD of the same performance, where you can see the joy on each band member's face as they enthrall a lively Japanese audience.

The musical relationship between Havana and New Orleans dates back centuries. Both cities share an Afro-Caribbean cultural heritage, and both take great pride in keeping that heritage alive. So it really shouldn't be too surprising that this mating--co-produced by Joe Boyd with Cubanismo's Jesús Alemañy and the Yockamo All-Stars' Mark Bingham--comes off so naturally. The stunning "Shallow Water Suite," featuring Crescent City R&B singer John Boutte, solidifies the African-based spiritual connection between New Orleans mardi-gras chants and Cuban rumba, while Ernie K-Doe's "Mother-In-Law" receives a clever bilingual workout. But the heart of the album is in the original instrumental hybrids such as "Cuborleans," "Gumbo Son," and Alemañy's "Boogaloo," on which trumpeter Alemañy earns an honorary place in the great New Orleans tradition that extends from Buddy Bolden and Louis Armstrong to Wynton Marsalis and Nicholas Payton. --Rick Mitchell

TRUE CRIOLLA.......2006-06-13

This CD was like eating really good criolla food. The perfect blend of spices and rhythms gives this Cubanismo CD all the right stuff. We loved every song on this CD. The tunes are memorable and I find myself humming them throughout the day. We dance to them and truly immerse ourselves in the feeling of being in Havanna at one moment and New Orleans the next. This is truly a recommend to anyone who likes Cuban and/or Cajun music.

The Spirit of Mardi Gras Year Round! Mambo!!.......2004-12-24

I heard the track "Mardi Gras Mambo" while poolside at a hotel, and the song stuck in my head for months. I searched far and wide to discover THIS CD contains that song - and it is worth the money. The variety, and rhythm of the tracks on this CD keep you thinking of the warm sand, and tropical breezes of the island's, mon... plus, of the spirit of 'carnival' during Mardi Gras. Want music with a Latin beat? This is a great CD.

A perfect Afro-Caribbean Gumbo.......2004-04-14

You only need to have a couple of brain cells to rub together to understand this CD. It perfectly captures the musical relationship between Havana and New Orleans and the Afro-Caribbean cultural heritage. Listening to this gumbo of great tunes is effortless in that it is smooth, elevating and relaxing at the same time – but the main word to describe this collection is fun. Alemañy didn’t have to go out of his way to show off his musical genius, as do so many other musicians that perform in this genre. He allows the music to speak for itself, and allows the other musicians to blend together naturally so that the blend of afro-cuban-creole and new Orleans jazz makes a musical gumbo not to be missed. On a scale of 1-5 stars, this CD is a 6!

Fusion Ain't Always Good.......2003-09-28

I just try to be straight with my reviews...i really didn't like this CD. Fusion doesn't always work, and in this case, i think the attempt to mix cuban music and cajun music failed. In fact, even when I've seen them live Cubanismo is far better when they stick to cuban music...their rap, cajun, calypso and other experiments just don't work for me at least. So, if you like the otehr Cubanismo CD's, don't get this one, ya probably won't like it.

Rumba boogie.......2003-04-13

Remember the days when you could just hop on board the ferry
from New Orleans to Havana? Yeah, ok, nobody does, but back at
the beginning of the 20th century, the daily ferry between the two
cities helped to foster musical exchanges, and Cubanismo's latest
record represents not only an attempt to recover some of the lost
historical closeness of the two cities, but also to create a new, syncretic
sound, blending Latin jazz and its counterpart from Louisiana. The
New Orleans classics with a Cuban twist (tracks 2&5) are fun, but I tend to
prefer the Cuban rumbas which are boogied up (tracks 3&11).

Habana, Cuba in the 21st century: Crumbling architectural relics, stray dogs and proud people. With a powerful vibrant culture. Not much different from the South Bronx in the '70's and '80's. And it is from the 'Boogie Down Bronx' that Hip-Hop was born and that spoken word, hip hop, resonated and traveled with a ferocious energy throughout the world at last reaching embargoed Cuba.

So what is Cuban Hip-Hop all about? Today's emcees are asking many questions that this unfulfilled generation wants answered. They express rage at the US embargo. Expect to hear "Si Por Cuba" a re-affirmation for the country that has never backed down. Cuban rappers know their history and culture and one track talks of the national love for Mandela, while another praises the famous Cuban Dancer from the 1950's, Mercedita Valdez, a third discusses the deadly consequences of a life of crime for an exiled 'Marielito' in Miami in 1989.

There is no stereotyped swagger among these tracks. The lyrics are sensitive and flavored with a deep understanding of humanity. The music is a subtle curry of old School hip-hop, and new and old Cuban sounds.

The music was produced entirely by Pablo Herrera* the only Hip-Hop producer working in Cuba today. This compilation was the idea of the project coordinator Ariel Fernandez Diaz.

All of the live contra-bass lines were recorded by one of the worlds' greatest Cuban-Jazz bassists, Jorge Reyes of 'Irakere' fame.

This is the first record of it's kind. Listen to the music and feel the power of "The Cuban Hip-Hop All Stars" Volume 1.

Volume 2. should be released sometime this year.

This is the first Cuban Hip Hop CD ever produced in Cuba, it's a demo album and part II should be released sometime this year, Cuba now has over 200 hip hop groups and there are some very talented ones like: 100% original (track:Amargas Meditaciones) and "Los Cubanitos" who are working on their debut album. This album sounds much like the 80's hip hop from the bronx. Be sure to check out the leading groups on Cuban Hip Hop: Orishas, Don Dinero & Nilo MC.

Canýt stop playing this CD........2002-03-28

I played this CD at work and everyone went nuts. We've been listening to it every day since, trying to decipher the lyrics with our collectively poor knowledge of spanish. It's a brilliantly textured collection, rich with authentic Cuban sound. It sounds better and better each time I hear it. We love it!

Awesome Latin Jazz CD. Hits the spot!.......2005-08-17

I must concur with the other reviewers in saying that this is a latin jazz gem. It's smooth, like a good aged wine. There's descarga in here too, but the interplay between the instruments and the arrangements are really the gold of this album. Simply put, some of the world's best musicians (certainly the best in Latin music, although they are versatile enough to play anything) coming together in harmony for a CD that does justice to the Latin Jazz movement as a whole. If there ever was a latin jazz album, it's this one. I'd highly recommend it, along with other's, like GIovanni Hidalgo's Worldwide and other CDs. Good music.

This is one of those rare albums that makes you forget about your problems, and that by itself is wonderful!!! I can assure you the moment you start playing this album you'll start moving your feet...and the best is that you can hear it at your house, office, car, etc...

I've owned this cd for a year now and today I played it for the first time in several months and I had forgen how great it was. Not to mention it has an allstar jazz artists on it including Hilton Ruiz, Mongo Santamaria, Dave Valentin, and James Moody. It has a lot of jazz tracks and a little bit of latin jazz. So if your in the moody for a great jazz album this is the one for you.

I love Tito, but this album doesn't have enough soul. I realize that these songs are more on the latin jazz than mambo side, but this stuff doesn't compare favorably to his better latin jazz work.
