not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Folk's most engaging open wound, Loudon Wainwright III, returns with a dozen new tunes that range from the acerbic to the affecting to the profound. "My Biggest Fan," the album opener, skewers every well-meaning slob who fights his way backstage to prove his merit. "No Sure Way" takes a subway ride into an elegiac past. And "Hank and Fred" walks a circuitous path to link the great Hank Williams with Mr. Rogers. But as usual, Wainwright best burrows into the brain with songs of 3 a.m., head-holding pain, e.g., "Had to Be Her," in which he declares that "love is a lesion." Things get darker from there, believe it or not, and shrinks have labels for what most of these songs evoke. Wainwright, deftly and notably backed here by Bill Frisell on electric guitar and Greg Leisz on lap and pedal steel guitar, never bores, and he never disappoints. But buyer beware: The Prozac nation had best keep its distance. --Alanna Nash

Not my Cup of Tea, but maybe it's yours.......2006-06-28
As one grows older, some things don't work as well as they used to, especially with us 50-something American males. With me, it's my knees, eyes and hearing, especially my hearing. I just don't hear the lyrics as well as I did 20 years ago.
So when I was listening to HCTC for the first time, I cheated by looking at the liner notes for the lyrics. Bummed was I when I found only half of them listed. Why?
Most of Loudon's appeal comes from his clever use of language and his uncanny ability to weave imaginative word stories. I was disappointed that LWIII didn't provide the tools for a hearing-impaired old geezer to enjoy them.
On *Here Come the Choppers*, many things don't work for My Man as well as they used to. He falls a bit short on the lyric frequently. And in another duplicitous turn he is often drowned out by an albeit magnificent backing band.
His selection of songs come from familiar sources---love gone wrong (or twisted), New York, nostalgia for his screwed up family life, and things that affect him. In the old days, you'd painlessly feel his pain. Here it seems like he's singing in the third person, disconnected, not all there. In the past he spoke from his heart, or ego, or liver. Like on *Hank and Fred* he never tells us WHY he's sad about Fred `s death, nor tells us why he connects Fred with Hank.
*When You Leave* has the greatest impact. Another favorite and skilled songwriting subject, Regret, is tearfully represented. *Nanny* is a bouncing Western boogie-ditty about his not-so-conventional Granny. A fun nostalgic ride thru Loudon's youth.
I promise that if I listen to this and begin to appreciate it more, I'll write a new review with the additional insight of familiarity.
One of his best ever .......2006-02-25
Can't get this one out of the changer. You know how some artists in this time of their lives get caught up in the same old thing? This isn't the case with LWIII. Very fresh sounding, and the work by Bill Frisell is a perfect fit. Great job.
Brilliant song-writing, spellbinding presentation.......2005-12-06
This cd rewards careful listening, each song a rich, concisely-told story. Country economy at its best. Prodded by a previous review belittling the insights in the 9/11 song No Sure Way, I'll just mention a few of the obvious ones: the odd feeling of surviving when others have died, the disturbing nearness of such suffering ("hell's not far below"), and the feeling of being out of place where such violent things happen. This cd is rich in songwriting. The acoustic playing is gorgeous. No peripheral connection between Hank Williams and Fred Rogers, as argued earlier, in the song Hank and Fred. Just to point to the most important: a life's suffering (Williams) ameliorated by the encouragement and presence of such a positive influence as Fred Rogers ("One New Years Day, Hank slipped away, slumped over in the back. I hope he had his cardigan, on in that cadillac.") Finally, where has there ever been such a cogent, gentle description of the near-death experience of extended tv watching? ("Everyone is dying to be on tv") Here "To Be on TV" can have the double connotation of being "on" a drug. This is great country/folk/blues/whatever song writing, and this cd is full of great songs.
BETTER TITLED 'HERE COMES THE BARGAIN RACK'.......2005-08-08
It will give you some idea about how Wainwright is straining for material that one of this CD's songs is about 9-11. Now four years into the history books, Loudon seemingly has nothing better to say about the tragedy than he noticed white tiles in the New York subway.
There isn't a "Westchester County" to be found on this offering. "My Biggest Fan"--just to cite one example--seems pointlessly indulgent even from egotist Wainwright. There's no "aha" in the song and Wainwright comes off as mean-spirited towards an inconsequential target that few will be able to relate to.
The CD a few years back that followed his mother's death exhibited poetry and beautiful melodies, such as "White Wine." But "Here Come the Choppers" is just a Shake-And-Bake of half-conceived songs you'll never listen two weeks after purchasing the CD.
Wainwright is a notoriously uneven artist, but "Here Comes the Choppers" is an under-inflated balloon at a party where you can't help but yawn.
like good tequila.......2005-07-29
Loudon Wainwright III's music is earthy and raw, but somehow as sophisticated as its more respectable competitors. Like always, he uses humor as a shield here, and like always, not too effectively. He's at his best when not trying to be too serious. Funny songs about his grandmother, or the death of Fred Rogers, tell us more about him than the serious mask of his trip past the WTC on the subway.
The killer track of the album, though, is the one that says the least about him personally - "Here Come the Choppers" uses his trademark humor to wrap a view of the terror of a chopper attack - only this time, it's on the streets of LA, not some faraway village of strangers. I bought this album two hours after hearing that song!
A HUGE plug must be made here for his A-list band, including Bill Frisell on guitar and Jim Keltner on drums. Just... wow. It's a full yet loose sound, rocking or swinging or bouncing or crying as needed.

Album Description
DizzyÂ's Business is a passionate, high-energy experience. The 13 tracks on The Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big BandÂ's sophomore CD Â- built on Dizzy GillespieÂ's original big band charts with new arrangements by musical director and Grammy Award winning arranger Slide Hampton, master saxophonist Jimmy Heath and drummer extraordinare Dennis Mackrel Â- come to life through the collective talents of what can only be categorized as GillespieÂ's Â"dream band.Â"
Recorded live at Manchester CraftsmenÂ's Guild in Pittsburgh, PA, during a four-night stand in September-October 2005, DizzyÂ's Business showcases the talents of 18 disciples from the Gillespie school Â- many of them musical luminaries in their own right Â- under the leadership of the great trombonist Slide Hampton. Included in the star-studded lineup are Jimmy Heath, James Moody, Frank Wess, Claudio Roditi, Randy Brecker, Antonio Hart, and Executive Director John Lee Â- all veterans who played with Dizzy at various times throughout the past five decades. Special guest trumpeter Roy Hargrove and the Italian-born vocal sensation Roberta Gambarini round out the ensemble. Hargrove lends his expert sound and riveting solos while Gambarini brings a remarkable range and gift for improvisation.

Cajun music might not need a tribute--after all, it has held its own and remained popular for a very long time now--but the music on this disc is glittering enough to shine in any company. Ann Savoy (the grande dame of Cajun music who assembled this project) and Linda Ronstadt pair up to gorgeous effect on two songs, Richard Thompson offers his own particular edgy style to "Les Flammes d'Enfer," Nick Lowe sounds convincingly Arcadian on "Arrette Pas la Musique," and Maria McKee brings a transparent soulfulness to her contributions. Surprisingly, however, no one tackles the Cajun anthem, "Jolie Blonde." There are plenty of other big names in the collection, with former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman John Fogerty standing out on the classic "Diggy Diggy Lo"--but then his former band always featured the bayou influence. Ironically, however, it's the two instrumental cuts by the anonymous band of Cajun all-star musicians that come across best, showing that even when the stars come out to play, there's never a complete substitute for authenticity. These American roots are strong indeed. --Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
Coonass to the bone! .......2007-01-10
If you are not familiar with Cajun music, this is a great way to start. Some very good artists play some classic cajun tunes. I love it.
Back Home On Saturday Night.......2005-07-15
This album is so much like being back on the bayou once again on a Saturday night, dancing on old wooden floors, having a cold drink and playing pool. The songs transform a car or living room into a long lost world of childhood nights when people had not much money, but something to laugh about, and took time to make the most of what they did have. I am definately buying my memories today.
Bland Lame Mockery.......2005-06-29
What should have been done with this project - Ann Savoy where is your common sense(?) - was to have incorporated TRUE Cajun artists' 'tributes' alongside mainstream artists' watered down lame interpretations just, if only, to add a bit of spice, zest and life to these horrendous "filler" tracks. Some of these artists have jumped on the wagon for a last gasp of possible exposure to their sagging careers. I'm very disappointed in Linda Ronstadt - seems all her projects from the past decade beyond her "Feels Like Home" album are mere warmups for indistinct singing which plainly implies she'd be much better off singing somewhere in a choir in anonymous obscurity. Somebody needs to grab Linda and shake her back to her own musical realities - what a shameful waste of her vocal abilities. [Ronstadt is leaving her "tierra" of Tuscon, Arizona in 2005 for a move back to San Francisco after a decade in commercial career doldrums - an obviously planned prestaging for a future "comeback" to her rightful throne as the Queen Of Pop.] If Ann Savoy envisioned massive universal exposure and commercial success for Cajun Music by influencing these 'blasts from their own pasts' to perform this genre of music, she was way off the mark and this entire project misfires. The artists on this tribute may indeed love Cajun, but, their musical visions fall flatly off base too fast. Sure, all music is out there and can be 'covered' by whoever wishes to do so, but, at least create an impressive contribution for the sake of keeping it vibrantly alive. We in Texas recognize and applaud the true Cajun artists[both famous and obscure]who come across the TX-LA border to perform at local & statewide celebrations only to leave audiences mesmerized and blown away long after they've packed up and gone back home to perform elsewhere. If you must have Cajun music in your collection out of a sincere love and appreciation for it, PLEASE look up the genre's rightfully endowed artists and obtain their Cd albums instead - at least give them their due.[You can also listen to Cajun Music saturday mornings for a few hours on Houston's own KPFT 90.1 FM on the internet at www.kpft.org - nothing but the real stuff is played there!]
Slight disagreement...........2004-12-02
I disagree with the previous review on a few things. First of all, CCR WAS influenced by Swamp Pop, but Swamp Pop is HEAVILY influenced by Cajun music; for those who don't know, it's essentially the music that came out when young Cajuns decided to play rock and roll instead of their own music, and they added Cajun instruments, rhythms and French lyrics to rock and roll, forming a "new" (but actually evolved) style of music. But that's just a technicality.
To make a forced distinction of Ann Savoy as an "adopted Cajun", while true, doesn't invalidate her knowledge of Cajun music and the lifestyle. She's been living in Eunice, LA for decades with her husband, Marc Savoy, the famous accordion builder and musician who played with such seminal musicians as Nathan Abshire and the Balfa Brothers. Ann became famous long ago for publishing "Cajun Music Vol. 1", which has become essentially a bible for Cajun musicians and fans of the music. Plus, don't forget the Cajun saying that there are three ways one can become a Cajun; you can be born Cajun, marry a Cajun, or come through "la porte d'en arriere" (the back door).
Lastly, to recommend Zachary Richard to someone who knows nothing about Cajun music is absurd. Richard is a singer-songwriter who plays primarily guitar (he's a relatively poor accordion player... his real strength is in his songwriting and stellar vocal skills). His music is, while phenomenal, a WORSE reflection of the true Cajun music sound than this record. For someone who really wants to get introduced to Cajun music, try an album by The Balfa Brothers, Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, Balfa Toujours, or, to stay in the Savoy vein of things, the Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band or, best of all, the Savoy Family Band.
By the way, the name can be and is spelled both "Savoy" and "Savoie". Ann and her husband Marc spell it "Savoy". The area of Eunice where they live is also called "Savoy", after Marc's family, and driving up the highway, you see a sign that says so.
Correction regarding "Jolie Blonde".......2004-10-14
I thought this album was lovely with haunting songs, especially Patty Griffin's "Pa Janvier, Laisse Moi M'en Aller," and Anne Savoy & Linda Ronstadt's "La Chanson d'une Fille de Quinze Ans." A correction of an earlier review by someone else: Jolie Blonde" does indeed make its appearance on this album, under the title of "Ma Blonde Est Partie." Different title, same melody!

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

Customer Reviews:
Great Mix .......2005-09-26
"Footlifters" is a great mix of marches, some very well known and some not so well known. However, it's the "not so well known" marches that make this CD a real winner. I never knew that Charles Ives and Scott Joplin wrote marches, and very good ones at that. I especially like Ives' "March Intercollegiate", with those special elements of surprise that are his specialty. His "Omega Lambda Chi" is very good as well. Other marches included are: "The Footlifter" (Fillmore); "Second Connecticut Regiment March" (Reeves); "Them Basses" (Huffine), as well as marches by Sousa, Alford, Joplin, Evans, Herbert, Gilmore, Gung'L, and Hewitt's "The Battle of Trenton". 19 tracks in all; 14 are played by The Incredible Columbia All Star Band, and 5 are played by The Goldman Band. Both ensembles are superb, playing with precision and spirit. This CD has great sound too. Another bonus: and I quote conductor Gunther Schuller, "Performances that are historically authentic, unadulterated in instrumentation, and respectful of the American march tradition". A valuable addition to your Band Library.

Inspired musicianship!.......2004-11-22
I had heard La Barbera's work before -- he was the principal arranger for the Buddy Rich Band for over 15 years and contributed to arrangements by a host of other leaders such as Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Tormé, Harry James, Glenn Miller, and Doc Severinsen - but this is the first CD I've found under his own name. With kudos on the back of the CD from the likes of Elmer Bernstein (composer of the title track) and Horace Silver, I knew before listening that this recording would become a solid staple of my big band library... and it has lived up to that promise. Crisp, bright, and solid arrangements swing from the first cut. The tracks move from rich symphonic fullness to dynamic smaller ensembles - embracing a full palette of colors - and the musicianship is top flight with folks like Bill Cunliffe on Keyboards, Clay Jenkins on trumpet, Pat La Barbera and Bob Shepard on tenor, and Joe La Barbera on drums. Horace Silver wrote: "Good arrangements -- good band -- good performance." I couldn't agree more!

Short and Sweet!
In case you're wondering why this is only going for $2. for new copies from secondary dealers, is because it wasn't worth the $16.00 it originally was priced at! What a SHOCK when I got this home from the store and put it in my machine!
I gave it away in a grab bag at work!
All I can say is: "Miss Horne, I am so sorry that you allowed this to be released...it's worse than the stuff that Callas/Di Stefano did at the end."

Lee Ritenour, Tom Scott, Randy Brecker and other big names from Dave Grushin's jazz label gather for a one-day, en masse blow-out. The repertoire includes be-bop, post-bop and contemporary standards, with Coltrane's "Blue Train" and Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" highlighting a disc that's markedly more spirited than the GRP norm. --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
strong quartet music but extremely weak on big band sound.......2006-11-22
first of all, i write this with great respect to other reviewers before me. i listened to this CD thoroughly and carefully over five times and i still failed to appreciate the music. reasons:
1. irrespective of the great names from the jazz scene, this CD failed to bring these world class musicians to create the big band sound. i would say, the music is not "tight" as in big band context. this is the worst failing of this CD. you hear mostly ensemble music in quartet or quintet format. the horn section was relegated to the background, almost like an afterthought to the whole musical arrangement. my suspicion, the "band" was not really in the studio together and the sound was engineered from different recording sessions when each segment of the band were re-compiled. i heard the disconnect between the soloist and the rest of horn section or the quartet discconnected from the horn section. the best example of this disconnect is the track "Spain" as you can hear the horn section was trying to play catch up with the quartet (keyboard, bass, rym. guitar and drums.
2. whereas Lee Ritenour, Eddie Daniels had their share of opportunity to strut their improvisation, Tom Scott, Eric Marienthal (in fact all the cats with superb horn skills) did not even have a moment to shine. may be i am old school, when i thought about big band, i thought about the horn section, in particular tenor sax, trumpet or trombone and the entire horn section together creating the "chops". however, this CD featured guitar, keyboards (piano) and flute in quintet setting. the end result is at best, unfulflling.
i encourage you to give this CD a careful listen and compare this with Basie Meets Duke CD (my all time favorite big band CD) or "It Might as well be Swing" by Count Basie Big Band with Sinatra on vocal. check this CD out, do some comparative listening and tell me if i am way off or right on. thanks.
The dream team!.......2006-05-27
What a sound, flawless inspiration, happy moods, what kind of stunning playing!. Size by size, wherever you analyze it, this is a winner album.
The impressive musical ensemble would be "the Dream Team", with such Big Leaguer soloists, how can you ever doubt?
Go for this enraptured album that will carry you back to those unforgettable melodies from the Twenties to the Fifties sounds. They invoked the names of Ellington, Parker, Goodman, Bassie, Miller and dozens of other prestigious jazz legends with deep fondness and heartfelt tribute.
A collection item!
Words Can't Describe.......2003-01-10
Wow! I first heard this album ten years ago while a fledgling jazz musician in high school. This album went on to become the best of my collection - I even spun it so many times in my player that I had to buy another copy of it. What makes this album so amazing is not neccessarily the setlist, but the musicians! GRP assembled some of their great label performers and got them together for this project (with a few more to follow). All of the musicians are incredible, but you'll notice some standout performances from Eric Marienthal (Alto Sax), Arturo Sandoval (Trumpet), Randy Brecker (Trumpet), and Bob Mintzer (Tenor Sax). I read somewhere that music is the closest thing to magic there is, and after listening to this album, you'll see why.
"Airegin" sets the stage nicely, followed by a perfect rendition of Coltrane's "Blue Train", with the best 24 bar blues solo I've ever heard from Bob Mintzer on Tenor Sax. "Donna Lee" features some blistering solo work by Nelson Rangell, Gary Burton, and Eddie Daniels. "Maiden Voyage" is easy and laid back, leading right up to one of the true gems of this album, "Sister Sadie", a crowd-pleaser if ever there was one. Marienthal's amazing Sax work still knocks me back every time I hear it! Up next is "The Sidewinder", and this is an excellent arrangement that Randy Brecker lights up on Trumpet. The next three tunes take it down a notch - "Seven Steps to Heaven" features a great (and rare)Marienthal Tenor Sax solo, and "I Remember Clifford" stands out as the album's premeire ballad. Sandoval is inhumanly good as always, and leads right up to an amazing climax! "Footprints" follows, featuring some great jazz guitar by Lee Ritenour. The last great showstopper of the album is next - Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca". Across the board amazing performances by the ensemble, featuring Dave Valentin (Flute), killer Piano by the Killer Kenny Kirkland, and the ultimate Trumpet battle royale by Sandoval and Brecker! The album is rounded out with more great work on Sax by Ernie Watts on " 'Round Midnight", and closes with a smooth version of Chick Corea's "Spain".
I have a very diverse music collection, and I'm proud to seat this album up at the top with other masterpieces of rock, jazz and classical music. I challenge you to listen to this CD and try- just try not to enjoy it. I dare you!
This is simply the best. No, it's much more than the best........2001-04-19
This album is an absolute must-have for everybody, who likes jazz, because, after you will listen to it, it will make you not just like jazz, but LOVE jazz and become devoted to it. I've had this CD for a couple of years by now, but still I keep listening to it at least five days a week. It's just gorgeous. My favorites are The Sidewinder, Sister Sadie and Blue Train. If you buy this one, you'll never regret it. Guaranteed.

The Count is back!!!.......2006-01-21
Even though this isn't actually Basie's band it SOUNDS more like The Count than most recordings I've heard and the reproduction is SUPERB! I can't stress this enough because many of Basie's offerings sound as though they were being played behind a curtain without the crisp, harmonious blast and echo that puts you right in front of the bandstand where his electrifying magic can best be appreciated. This IS Basie "LIVE" as I've heard him many times and Harris honors his musical legacy to ABSOLUTE PERFECTION.
"Night Mist Blues" (my favorite cut), "Dejection Blues" and "Blues For Pepper" say it all. I've waited years for this one and I can't recommend it highly enough to all you Basie fans who want to bask in the thrill of the Count's brass-driven "Swingin'The Blues" or the soulful perfection of his "When Did You Leave Heaven?" - ONE MORE TIME.
BUY this CD. You won't be sorry!
"evocative testimony of swingin' the blues".......2000-12-23
Basie loved to play the blues, so who better...one of the greatest blues pianists of all time, as he attempts to fill that chair and lead the band - Gene Harris pays "Tribute to Count Basie. In this tribute to Captain Bill, Harris has been faithful to that priority, not to imitate - but to celebrate the spirit of Count Basie in Gene's own style.
Some of the musicians who were associated with the various Basie Bands sit in on this album - Snooky Young (lead trumpet), Jon Faddis (lead trumpet) and Marshall Royal (lead alto sax). Herb Ellis was the only guitar player who could fill Freddie Green's shoes. The soloists also include - Plas Johnson (tenor sax), Ray Brown (bass), Conte Candoli (trumpet) and Bill Watrous (trombone) play with crisp, exultant authority...much what Basie would expect and liked to hear.
Concord Jazz aims this music to make people feel good...make you move, even when you're sitting down...spin this one on your CD player...the best of two worlds Basie and Gene Harris...this one is a keeper!
