5 out of 5 stars Kudo's for Wendy Carlos.......2007-01-16

Wendy Carlos does an excellent job of updating all of the Classical pieces on this CD, as well as on all of her other CDs. I originally had this on Open Reel Tape, and am really happy that she has ported it over to the CD format! All of the selections on this CD can only be termed as "stirring" and it is enjoyable to hear each time it is played.

5 out of 5 stars Difficulty in placing an order.......2007-01-04

Because I had difficulty navigating through the purchase process, I ended up receivibg two and I only wanted one. I gave one away. You need to review the purchase process and have a "done" or something to indicate that Amazon has received the purchase request and will act upon it. Or else I will find someone else with whom to do business!!!!

3 out of 5 stars interesting concept, skillful interpretation, but sounds very dated now.......2006-12-26

As a performance, the music here is fantastic, and considering the challenges of monophonic sythesizers it is very impressively and skillfully performed. That said, if like me you were born after electronic music became commonplace, this will sound incredibly dated. The problem is that the sound programming abilities of the first moogs were limited, so the sounds are not very fitting to the music, creating a slightly comical kitschy mock-futuristic effect. Part of this effect is the womp womp womp beep beep beep sounds that now sound corny. While interesting, it sounds very anachronistic and less evocative than real instruments. I think I'll go back to orchestral performances of classical music. I'll keep this in case I ever want to make a campy future film spoof. Wow, I sure said "sound " a lot. Well, this really is all about the sounds.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, but. . ........2006-08-08

I have always enjoyed this album and Switched on Bach ever since they came out in LP form when I was young.
The thing that ruins the CD for me is the very last track on both albums, where Wendy discusses the making of the album, called Well-tempered experiments.
I think that is fun to listen to the first time you play it, but then it is obnoxious when you are playing it as you work around the house. Your home is filled with music, then suddenly, there is talking and some obnoxious noises. It just shouldn't be there.
And to do this to both albums is very disappointing. It is hard to ignore, as it is a 9 minute track!
I solved this by burning both albums onto another CD and eliminating the experiment tracks. But I would rather have the original CD's and eliminate those tracks.

4 out of 5 stars As good as I remembered it!.......2006-03-03

I heard "The Well-Tempered Synthesizer" when it was first issued; like many people I was stunned by the strange, beautiful sound created by a "machine". Then I read about the difficulty of making the recordings, which took tremendous time and thoughtfulness, and this made me appreciate the human element more than the technology.

Imagine someone who, to cook breakfast, designs a henhouse, raises chickens, gathers the eggs, grinds wheat to make bread, picks fresh strawberries...all for a breakfast that could be made more easily using traditional sources or methods. Pardon the clumsy metaphor, but this is what Carlos had done: giving me Bach, by creating a new kind of chicken to get to the egg.

The sounds one hears in this recording are not as sophisticated as more modern synthetic voices, but they are still pristine and haunting. There is a sort of lonely, cosmic emptiness to the sound, but this is not discomforting; in fact, the music triumphs over the strangeness that no human hand or throat moved during the process, except at the keyboard and the 747-cockpit looking control panel of the Moog synthesizer.
Having a CD of this music is a joy, and the music delights.

5 out of 5 stars The best crystal bowl cd ever? Yeah right..........2007-02-17

That's what I said as I read the reviews here and clicked over to the author's website... so I reluctantly handed over my cash with little expectation, and well, I have to say... I agree!

Frankly, I was a little surprised, I love this kind of music and my last purchase of Stephen Halpern's Crystal Bowls was disappointing to say the least as it was filled with synthesizers and other cheesy New Age effects. This one is not and I wouldn't even lump it with a New Age tag (as the product description has). It' just truly beautiful music. The resonance is wonderful and the first chakra track is great for getting me, or my space back into alignment. Simply put it on in the background and clear your space. Wonderful! The other tracks on the CD have beautiful touches including shamanic instruments like the Buffalo drums, rattles, native flutes, rain sticks and other instruments. All appropriately added, expertly played and NO New Age cheese. What's interesting about it is that the CD recorded in one evening with no manipulations. I love reading books and listening to audio of people that have opened their heart - you can feel that in the work... in a similar way I think this is transmitted through music and it most definately is here.

I have since recommended and raved about this CD to all my friends. If you're a healer with a practice, you're going to want it for background music or just clearing your space. For everyone else, it's wonderful for relaxation and coming back into balance (put on your headphones for a real treat) or just some soothing music to play after a hard day or most definately for people who are not feeling well.

Other crystal bowl CDs I like include Benjamin Iobst Seven Metal Singing Bowls of Tibet and Crystal Voices by Deborah Van Dyke. Daniel Goleman's work is also fantastic - Chakra Dance, Chakra Chants and his Om CD (although all his work is good).

I highly recommend this beautiful CD. There are extra touches, with different instruments so if you're using it purely for meditation, that may distract you (as some other reviewers seem to have experienced). That is, I guess, a matter of personal preference - some people would be okay with the other instruments. It's the kind of CD where you that makes you go and buy everything the artist has ever produced. Of the hundreds of the healing type CDs I have, this is, and will remain, well and truly at the top of the heap. This might just be... the best crystal bowl CD ever!

5 out of 5 stars Very good for meditation.......2007-01-11

I listened to this during my hospital stay on my iPod because I could not sleep. It helped me immensely.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Healing and Soothing Sounds!.......2006-11-03

This CD, just like all Crystal Vibrations productions, is pure healing. I can always count on the first track (Chakra Alignment) to bring me back into balance and alignment. I also use this disc as a space clearing tool for my home... the high vibrations resonate throughout, leaving my space feeling warm and wonderful. A multi-purpose musical adventure... how can you resist?

5 out of 5 stars Wow, Raising the Vibe!!.......2005-11-23

Pretty incredible music that makes everything I do while listening seem to happen effortlessly. It shifts and "tunes up" the energy in the room and in me! The Chakra alignment is like a warm up to the magic of all the other instruments that weave in and out of the singing bowls. So you can stay really focused and present or drift off into deeply meditative states. Listening to the soothing music on this CD is one of the best prescriptions you can give yourself! If you want to journey to the far reaches of the universe, treat your self to their CRYSTAL PORTAL CD and get Journey to Wholeness for taking care of everything else!!

5 out of 5 stars Lighten Up, Chill Out and Recharge.......2005-10-17

This is my favorite of all the meditation and singing crystal bowl music I own and I have a huge collection. Initially, I used it for meditation in the morning before work and then again when I got home. It left me calm for the day and recharged at night. Then I thought to put it on while paying bills and doing stressful chores. The resonance of the crystal bowl tones had an immediate effect. I was able to focus and breathe with ease while I completed my tasks. The sound quality is superb and you get all the beautiful overtones that can only come on a live recording. And the effect is lasting. For a real vacation, listen to this CD with headphones.

2 out of 5 stars are you sure this isn't Kenny G?.......2006-04-23

First of all. I think that Halpern is awesome! I love what he does; so I thought I would see what he would be about in terms of a collaborative kinda thing. OHMIGOD!I know some of you are going to want to hunt me down and shoot me for saying this, but to me this sounds like Kenny G on a good day (i'll give him that much). What is up with Paul McCandless? He seems to have MASTERED the smooth, fill up all of the spaces, twinkly dink horn sound. I picked this up thinking, "WOW, two people I really like playing together!--This should be amazing.Not...The worst part is that I did indeed hear some Oregon-Like, Very good horn riffs, yes, some real nice drum and also bass grooves...almost got me. BUT. . . the fact that all of Paul's solos seemed to revolve around this certain resolution (Kenny G like). Not at all challenging, nor is it even very interesting. It's just realyy smooth and nicey nice.
It sucked for me.
If you like that kind of thing, then this is for you. Me, I like a lbit of a challenge. This does not even relax me. Very lame. I dunno, try it again guys, Maybe next time.

2 out of 5 stars Prefer soft sounds. .......2006-04-11

It would seem like the tones should put you to rest. But for me the woodwinds seemed a little harsh - using to fall asleep did not do it for me. I prefer "Inner Peace". No question, that will take to right into deep sleep.

4 out of 5 stars Paul McCandless Shines.......2006-02-02

This a wonderful album that is easy to listen to, yet contains challenging and interesting performances. I generally like Steve Halperns music, but I will confess that I understand why some people find him a bit bland. Adding Paul McCandless to the mix, however, changes everything. This album has the easy listening strengths of a Steve Halpern album, but it is dominated by the first rate playing of the excellent Paul McCandless. The music on these tracks works in the background, but it has real depth if you decide to listen closely. McCandless is a first rate musician. He has excellent technique, and is both creative and very expressive. The songs are soothing and warm, and yet McCandless plays so well, and with such an adventuresome spirit, that one can sit down and appreciate this as great music, as fine jazz. The compositions on this album are all quite strong, and some tracks have interesting performances by a drummer and bassist.

5 out of 5 stars Quiet Moments With Two Reeds.......2005-05-08

Paul McCandless, who can play every woodwind from the pennywhistle to the English horn and make it sound effortless, has been a noted contributor to the Jazz scene for some 30 years. He is also possessed of a faultless background in classical oboe - a student of Robert Bloom, as well as a past member of the Paul Winter Consort. In other words, he is very, very good.

While I'm not a great fan of 'healing' music, which tends to be a little to soothing and formless for my tastes, McCandless's discipline and style make something else of the genre entirely. Partnered with Stephen Halpern on this album they create a musical experience which really is music and not simply background for a Reiki studio. It works as Jazz, and that is more important to me than the genre itself.

McCandless's tone is more colorful than the classic 'French' oboe style that has become popular in the U.S. But there is no harshness or nasality to it. McCandless is velvet smooth, but not glassy. In Blue Nile, for example, he takes you for an amazing tour of his instrument, working and embellishing his melody without ever settling into a false, Egyptian sound. Then, in Celtic Comfort, he switches to the flute, capturing the styling of Irish melody without every slavishly following it.

Steve Halpren is Steve Halpren as usual, backing the soloist up with his characteristic keyboard work. This is probably just as well, since McCandless's delicate lines are what you really want to be hearing. Halpren is probably the best at this genre, but I find that all to often his playing lacks personality. Of course, that's probably exactly the way he wants it to be.

In any case, whether you are interested in healing music or McCandless's polished music making this is an album to put on your list.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect alignment indeed..........2004-12-18

Looking for some new sounds and a unique approach to healing music? This 2002 collaboration between Stephen Halpern and Paul McCandless is a refreshing change of pace for both artists and leads in some interesting and unexpected directions.
.
This quote from the liner notes describes the music well: "...showcases their almost telepathic communication that bridges New Age, classical, smooth jazz, neo-soul and world music. It features an ethereal combination of atmospheric textures and traditional healing rhythms from Ghana and ancient Persia."
.
And listen to what Stephen Halpern has to say about collaborating with Paul McCandless: "As I pre-produced the arrangements in preparation for Paul's arrival, in my mind's ear I heard melodic ideas that would complete the musical vision. From the first moments of the recording session, it was clear that Paul had tuned into a similar vision. There was a level of unspoken communication that was mind-blowing. On many songs, Paul played exactly what I was hearing inside my head. On other songs, his long, elegiac melodies sprang effortlessly from the wellspring of his own soaring creativity, and took the music to new heights."
.
Depending on where I had the volume set, I found these soothing sounds worked equally well as foreground or background music. Playing quietly in the background, it will support and even enhance conversation. Crank the volume and prepare to be captivated and focused 100% on the music.
.
Although the CD is a generous 74 minutes long, it's not long enough, and I like to put the CD player on "repeat" and listen to it over and over. Somehow, all that repetition never sounds repetitious. Repeated listenings just carry me deeper and deeper inside to a place of "perfect alignment." Recommended.

There's a certain tightness and sense of control in Chicago Underground Duo's music. Despite their jazz background, it's clear that they have been influenced by indie rock, modern classical composition, and electronica. There isn't the loose flow of a jazz album here; there's a specific kind of focus that is rooted in non-jazz sources. One half of the duo, multi-instrumentalist Rob Mazurek, has appeared on recordings by Stereolab, Tortoise, and Calexico, so it makes sense that post-rock sounds would influence Mazurek and his collaborator, multi-instrumentalist Chad Taylor. And this CD, which was recorded by Tortoise members John McEntire and Ken Brown, sounds like a rock album. Taylor's vibraphone and Mazurek's cornet are key colors in the album's essentially cool palette, and Axis and Alignment's buttery brass tones and ringing melodic percussion leave a lasting timbral impression. At times this album brings to mind an altered and expanded version of Third Stream jazz for the 21st century, a style in which Pierre Boulez, cool jazz, post-rock, and free jazz can all hang out together. --Fred Cisterna

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Miles Lives!.......2002-04-16

Chicago Underground live in a world between Miles' post bop and fusion era and they do so amazingly, better than the master himself at times. Axis and Alignments is their most consistent album to date. There are no sporadic ventures off into lala land, otherwise known as "avant-garde" here, it is just pure magic. Seriously intense jazz mixed with a bit electronica. The individual songs on this album do lack some of the punch that has been present on past pieces, like "Blue Sparks...", but overall this is a much better effort than anything the boys have produced. Jazz is not dead and the Chicago Underground prove it. This is essential listening for both jazz fans and hipster college kids who have Davis in one hand and Tortoise in the other (although this will make you put away your Tortoise album and eventually lead you to some real jazz, as apparent on this album...let go the post rock, embrace the real product).

Sean Mason has produced a great CD here. If you like jazz-fusion, or bands like Chick Corea and the Rippingtons and Spyro Gyra, you should check this one out. You won't be disappionted! My favorite track is either No Look Pass or Gliding Through Passageways. As a bass player, I have great respect for the talent shown on this CD. Very slick..........with enough variety to keep it from getting stale too fast. All the tunes have great melodies, and it is not as spacey as some fusion bands. You can hear samples at mp3.com. Try it out.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD! Great compositions, and superb musicianshp!.......1999-11-09

This CD is one of the best I've heard in a long time. I'm a musician, and read about Solar Wind in Jazziz Magazine. The playing on this record is HOT! Frank Gambale rips, and Sean Mason plays the bass so clean, fast and funky it's unreal. Every song is strong, and stands on it's own very well. Together, the songs make for a very diverse, ear-satisfying album. Way to go Solar Wind. I can't wait for the next CD.

5 out of 5 stars Blissful, ethereal music.......2007-07-04

I came across this music about 2001 and use it all the time in energy balancing and Reiki. I found Volume Two suited me better than Volume One, although the music is nearly identical. I find Angels of Healing particularly helpful because the high notes tend to draw me "upwards". In this music there are no nature sounds [birds twittering, waves crashing], no gongs, no percussion, and no catchy melodies. It's simply soothing, ethereal music that glides along. It's unobtrusive. If you just sit and listen to this music it may not do much for you. It could be almost boring. BUT, if you are engaged in energy work, you may find it helps you slip effortlessly into the flow so that you know intuitively where to place your hands. At least, that's been my experience.

    Album Description

This music was written for various forms of healing therapy such as Reiki, massage, Shiatsu, and other forms of healing practices. Specialized sound equipment was used to enhance an almost holographic sound projection that would physically envelop and embrace the person receiving the healing. This music is also recommended for centering, alignment, meditation and deep relaxation.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars transcendant.......2005-11-27

A lot of "new age" style music is repetitious and annoying. However, my husband and I both highly recommend any of the Healing Angels CD's for their soothing beauty. When I'm feeling overwhelmed, stessed, or just in need of a reminder to keep things in perspective, I put on one of these CD's and get an attitude adjustment.

    5 out of 5 stars Relaxing.......2002-10-17

I have many CD's to help me relax and meditate, and I have to say that this is one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars A real gift of Healing and a great Stress Reliever!.......1999-12-26

The best stress buster I've found yet. I am a massage therapist, and this is the absolute favorite of most of my clients. It has a wonderful healing quality, truely angelic. This is music you can float away on while your problems and stress melts away. Highly recommended! Light a candle, draw a bubble bath, relas and enjoy! You deserve music this good!
