    Jordie Savall and Hesprion XX do it again. I've yet to hear a CD of his that I didn't love. Most of my collection of 15th-17th Century music is English, French, German, and Italian, and I am happy to see the Spanish masters taking their place alongside them.

    San Antonio's hunky Emilio Navaira celebrates an enormously successful decade of Tejano music with his band Rio (formed in 1989) on 10 Aniversario. This collection of the artist's strongest cumbia, ranchera, and vals songs makes an excellent retrospective for established fans while serving as a great starting point for those interested in exploring the Tex-Mex genre. Emilio became a Tejano star in the early 1990s due to a successful solo debut, Unsung Highways, and the country hit "It's Not the End of the World." Now, 10 years and a handful of albums later, this retrospective nicely summarizes Emilio's impressive songwriting, upbeat arrangements, and charismatic singing. Particular standouts include "Mi Primer Amor" and "Ella Es," with their mix of cumbia swing and pop sensibility. "Olvidemos lo Pasado" boasts not only Emilio's knack for a melodious hook but also his emotive personality. A strong package. --Karen Karleski

    I just recently bought the latest Emilio Cd and I thought it was great. I especially liked the songs titled: Mi Primer Amor; Ella Es; Olvidemos Lo Pasado; Quiero Que Tu; and Jurame. Obviously I loved the cumbias!!! Great job Emilio!! :-)

    Impressive solo debut from Kevin Ceballo. You might recognize his voice....he did lead vocals for Isidro Infante on some fat tracks like "El Pito" and "Por tu Ausencia". Now Mr. Infante has guided Kevin into the spotlight, and what a great decision it was!

    The first 6 tracks are fresh Salsa Romantica, with a sound reminiscent of Mar Anthony. The remaining cuts are a selection of other tropical genres, including a respectable remake of "Ausencia".

    Indeed, this cd has lead many to draw comparisions between Kevin Ceballo and Marc Anthony. However, with the exception of "Vivire", (with Vanessa, a seemingly poor attempt to recreate 'Vivir Lo Nuestro"), I find the tracks a cut above the standard Marc Anthony fanfare. Mr. Ceballo sounds just a little less "pop-ish". He has the background of a true salsero, and it shows!

    Come on, you can pick up a copy for under $10 - what're you waitin for?!!!

          Humberto Ramirez is well-known as an excellent, Latin-Jazz trumpetist, composer, and arranger.

          I believe "Mi Primer Amor" is his first venture into mainstream Salsa arrangements...and I am highly impressed. As a Salsa/latinjazz musician myself, I was impressed with the musicianship of the artists performing on this record, as well as with the danceability of the record. It straddles the demands of "pop" AND "jazz" audiences very well. If I had to describe it...this is a Salsa record conceived and performed by Jazz musicians. Which is to say...this is not your mainstream, sirupy, cookie-cutter Erotic Salsa for Pop venues (although it will cater to those audiences too). This is Salsa by musicians who know the "ins and outs" of music...and know how to record a good session of Latin music. A Record BY musicians, FOR musicians and FOR the general audience.

          Sadly for Humberto, I bought this record for $6.00 in a Puerto Rico music store...and it seemed like this record was not getting much attention. However, it was truly one of those "diamonds in the rough" type of catches. It's one of my favorite Salsa records and it's often in my CD player.

          If you're a true Salsa "listener", this CD is gonna be very enjoyable. Very good arrangements, very good performance, and a very good record overall. I confidently give it 5 stars.

          My father-in-law just visited us in NYC from Texas and all he kept talking about was this guy Kevin Ceballo. I was riding with him in his car and Kevin's song "Mi Primera Amor" came on the radio and I was like, wow, who is this? Of course I was told it was him and the race was on for me to buy his cd. This guy has a great voice and knows his way around melodies and hooks. He reminds me a lot of Marc Anthony. He's got a very soulful voice and wraps it around runs that are familiar in r&b music, as does Marc. I am primarily an r&b fan, but I also listen to country, pop, rock, and latin, and this guy really caught my ear. His cd will get lots of attention in my player for the rest of the summer!

          I've recently returned from New York where I had the pleasure of watching this new talent of Kevin Ceballos in action and wow he was sensational. Living in Australia its difficult to see great talents like Kevin but when I first heard 'Mi Primer Amor' via lamega.com, I was hooked. The CD was a great buy, but musically speaking no other song stands out more than 'Mi Primer Amor' particularly in the way Kevin dominates the song with his breathing capabilities and his singing registry. I am a timbales player who loves to watch salsa singers take songs and rip it apart with heart and soul and Kevin does that with this song. Many would say that there is some element of Marc Anthony involved in his singing style though Kevin is not as husky as Marc in his high pitched notes. The other songs like 'Por esa mujer'is perhaps the only other worthwhile salsa in the album.The other tunes in the cd demonstrate the variety that this singer has but been a real salsero as I am, I hope Kevin takes on work with other producers like Sergio George and progresses in been another sensation in our latin scene. Que tengas toda la suerte del mundo Kevin...te lo mereces...

          I first heard the title song, Mi Primer Amor, on radio and fell in love with it instantly. Kevin's voice projects such feeling, passion and versitality with such songs as Auscencia, What Kind of Man and the up tempo Por Esa Mujer. The most important feature that stands out with this CD is the "quality" of the music under the collaborative production and writing of Ralph Mercado, Isidro Infante, numerous musicians and of course the talented Kevin himself. A definite must for your Salsa collection.
