Customer Reviews:
great first album .......2007-06-13
How they could kick Al Kooper out of this band after creating there debut god only knows.
Too bad the marriage was so short.......2007-05-15
Blood, Sweat & Tears was the total brainchild of Al Kooper. He made one classic LP with them, then left/was pushed out, they hire a singer and BOOM, they explode commercially. Talk about irony. Unlike many, though, I don't put down the Clayton-Thomas version of the band. In fact, I think that the self-titled LP was a classic of a sort. The material (all covers, right?) was well-chosen, the arrangements were tight and imaginative, the production was incredible, and Clayton-Thomas did a great job. It only lasted one album, but it was a great album.
But this is the real McCoy. A groundbreaking stunner. Had it not been for Kooper's vision, that second BS&T album could never have happened. This was the child that was father to the man. Though it has escaped grandiose status for almost 40 years, it is a stone cold classic.
B.S.& T. is Only Good with Al Kooper.......2006-11-06
This is an exceptional album.....not your typical Blood, Sweat and Tears commercialized garbage that was created after this album. This was their first album, raw and orginal, not over-produced or watered down for a top 40 audience. It is, in fact, the band driven and led by the great rock and blues musician, Al Kooper. When B. S. & T. "lost" Al Kooper, they lost everything.....fortunately, we can find what they lost in this album.
The Masterpiece.......2006-07-23
This album doesn't have any of Blood Sweat and Tears hits. However, it is the band's best album, at least from a conceptual sense. Even though every song is completely different from the last, it somehow feels like a smooth transition to go from one song to the next. This album also represents the original lineup of Blood Sweat and Tears, including the creator keyboardist (and on this album, vocalist), Al Kooper. Kooper had actually formed this band because of creative issues with Danny Kalb, the leader of another great band, the Blues Project. Kooper's experience in the Blues Project can be seen on this album, as there is still a great deal of blues infused into even the classical and r&b numbers. Some notable tracks that I especially enjoyed on this album include "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," "Overture," and the haunting but beautiful, "World Without Love."
Al Kooper COULD Be President of General Motors..........2006-05-23
Considering the shape they're in today, it could be a big improvement.
This was, of course, a huge sleeper in its day. Unlike the later Clayton-Thomas BST album, this one produced no "Top Ten" played hits. However, as a concept album it was great, and as one which paved the way for white-boy blues, it was something really new.
We loved them more than they'd ever know...and hey, look closely at the album cover. Take it from me - this was WAY before Photoshop.
Hipgnosis - how did they DO that, anyway??

Getting the two most personable voices in jazz to sing an hour's worth of George Gershwin's opera Porgy & Bess (Ella doing all the female parts, Satchmo all the male) was a good idea, but not quite as great as it sounded. Armstrong savors the down-and-dirty Charlestonisms that inspired the cadences of the music and lyrics, and they fit his happy rasp like an old shoe; Fitzgerald, conversely, sounds almost prissy every time she has to sing the word "ain't," though her melodic genius gets Gershwin's bold, supple tunes over. The arrangements are full-throttle Broadway, with a few leaps into Dixieland (including some fine Armstrong trumpet solos), but the disc works best when the vocalists break character and let their jazz side out. --Douglas Wolk
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely peerless.......2006-11-17
"Porgy and Bess" has just opened (with some controversy) in London's West End, though as a musical and not as an opera as it was originally conceived. Reviews have been promising and I aim to go down and see it soon. I decided to listen to this CD to put myself in the mood. I hadn't listened to it for years and I'd completely forgotten how good it actually is. Ella's voice blends with Louis' perfectly and Russell Garcia's orchestration gives them a dreamy landscape to perform against. I have one or two other CDs by Louis and Ella but this one is by far my favourite. The CD opens with "Overture" and its orchestral performance of classics like "Summertime", "I Wants To Stay Here", "I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'" and "It Ain't Neccessarily So" set the tone nicely, leaving one ever so keen for the vocal versions. Louis Armstong has a very rough tone to his voice but the emotion he packs with it is moving, most especially on the mournful "Bess, Oh Where's My Bess?" And we get all this and Louis' wonderful trumpet playing too?
Gershwin and Gershwin must be among the top composers of the last century and this opera showcases their talents more than anything I've heard. Ella and Louis are peerless as a vocal duo and though I doubt the West End performance will capture the magic in the same way they did, I still remain very keen to go see it. Is it opera or is it a jazz performance? I don't really know. I just know that I love it. And strongly recommend it.
once-in-a-lifetime greatness.......2006-10-06
Two thousand five hundred musicians have recorded "Summertime" --- it's a classic. (I bet most Americans can name Janis Joplin and no other singer.) As for "Porgy and Bess," the folk opera from which "Summertime" springs, it's such a classic that it's hard to believe anyone ever had a harsh word to say about it.
But after its premiere in 1935, no less than Duke Ellington said, "It has grand music and a swell play, but the two didn't go together. It does not use the Negro musical idiom --- the times are here to debunk Gershwin's lampblack Negroisms."
A quarter of a century later, the producers of the film version had trouble assembling a cast. Harry Belafonte rejected their offer to play Porgy. Sidney Poitier took the part --- and wished he hadn't. Poitier later wrote that the movie insulted black people; when he chose clips of his best performances for his tribute at the American Film Institute, he picked nothing from "Porgy and Bess."
And in 1985, when Grace Bumbry was a sensation as Bess in a Metropolitan Opera production, she slammed the opera: "I thought it beneath me, I felt I had worked far too hard, that we had come far too far to have to retrogress to 1935."
All that may be. All I know is that I have, in a long life, rarely been confronted with more genius than in the Fitzgerald/Armstrong recording of "Porgy & Bess." Set aside the achievement of George and Ira Gershwin in transforming DuBose Heyward's novel into a folk opera. Let's just focus on Armstrong and Fitzgerald, who were at the peak of their popularity when this record was made in 1957.
"Summertime" --- the first song --- sets the tone. A baleful horn figure, then violins. And then Armstrong's trumpet: slow, steady, dignified. But wait --- here comes a slurred note. And a cool little improvisation. Just enough of each. Very tasty.
Fitzgerald sings a verse. She is cool and formal. A lady. Not to be taken lightly. Now it's Armstrong's turn. Tender, but let's not kid ourselves --- this is not singing as others define it. This is melodic speech: rough, gutteral. And thus he is ideally cast: His Porgy may have his charms, but he'll have to stretch to keep Bess.
And so it goes throughout the CD. Trumpet mastery --- Armstrong has dazzling control. His tone is bright, but never shrill; there's a warmth in his playing no one else could produce. And Fitzgerald is just a study in inevitability; to hear her is to wonder how anyone could sing these songs any other way.
"I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'." "Bess, You Is My Woman Now." "A Woman Is a Sometime Thing." "There's a Boat Dat's Leavin' Soon for New York." "Bess, Oh Where's My Bess?" "Oh Lawd, I'm on My Way."
All brilliantly conceived, orchestrated and recorded.
The greatest trumpet player in this history of jazz.
The father of scat singing.
The queen of the jazz vocal.
There are no-brainers, and then there is this Ella Fitzgerald-Louis Armstrong collaboration --- music that imprints on your soul.
We love this album.......2006-08-22
We hope they will someday bring this beautiful story back to the stage
Simply great.......2006-03-04
The fusion between the great two voices and the orchestra is just brilliant. Very good brass and violins that accompany Fitzeralds and Armstrongs magic voices leaves you with your mouth open.
A must have for everyone!

Customer Reviews:
Sad Really Sad.......2007-05-13
These CDs don't meet the standards I would have expected from Elmer Bernstein's wonderful film music.
*Boring*
It just didn't have the energy one would expect from "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Man with the Golden Arm". I think the City of Prague and National Youth Jazz Orchestras were bargain orchestras used to make an inexpensive CD set of one of my favorite film composers. The conducting and arrangements were what made this an obviously bad album.
An excellent movie themes antology by ELMER BERNSTEIN.......2007-05-10
Silva Screen Records, presents this antology of the music from the late great composer/conductor ELMER BERNSTEIN, who supervised this recording just before die.
Played the The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by his one time assistant James Fitzpatrick
Recorded in HDCD and Dolby Surround
Excellent.......2007-04-22
it's unfortunate that more tracks weren't able to be recorded as theree was a good 15-20 minutes of space remaining on both discs. Regardless, this is an excellent sampler, especially in conjunction with Varese's Bernstein sampler including rare stuff like the Black Cualdron.
With regards to this silva set, these recordings range back to 1994, with Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit being recorded for a John Wayne CD and Bridge At Remagen for a CD of classic War themes. The Great Escape was also recorded for that CD, but producer James Fitzpatrick opted to record a new arrangement (same with Magnificent Seven). In '97, The Buccaneer for included on a Swashbucklers disc, while Heavy Metal was on the popular 'Space and Beyond' compilation. In '98, the world premiere recording of Airplane first appeared on a DISASTERS film disc. So while it may technically be the world premiere RECORDING it certainly is not the world premiere CD RELEASE of that recording. Ghostbusters was included on Space 3: Beyond the Final Frontier, the second followup to the popular 'Space and Beyond'. Fast forward to 2002 and 4 recordings first appeared on WAY OUT WEST: ESSENTIAL WESTERN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION VOLUME TWO, those being The Comancheros, The Hallelujah Trail, The Scalphunters and The Shootist. Man With the Golden Arm and Walk on the Wild are from Silva's JAZZ IN FILM cd.
The remaining tracks were all newly recorded for this release. They are of course the strongest tracks, seeing as the City of Prague Philharmonic has improved over time. I do wonder though why they did not include the older arrangements of Great Escape and Mag. Seven as bonus tracks.
I also recommend the simultaneously released '40 years of Film Music: Jerry Goldsmith' for another great set honoring a late great film composer.
Great Film Music.......2007-03-09
This is a great recording of some of the best film music ever. From the
great westerns to the Theme from Airplane to music he did for television,
Bernstein was one of the greatest.
Fun, Powerfull music.......2007-02-17
It's great! It brings back memories of my dad. He loved John Wayne and the old cowboys of the Magnificent Seven. But it's nice just to listen and relax (it's not all cowboy music).

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Awesome to hear the old masters almost live........2007-03-27
It was an awesome experience to hear Ragtime and early blues played by the masters themselves. When you hear the music from their own hands, if not their own pianos, it makes the music immediate, and makes even clearer the stylistic differences of the various American musical pioneers. The sound quality is excellent. I'd strongly recommend this recording to anyone who enjoys early-20th-century jazz.
The Greatest Ragtime of the Century.......2005-10-30
What a terrific CD. What a joy to add to your life. Everyone should begin their day with this Great Ragtime. We would all be much better.
As a former dancer, Flapper, wth the Charleston in my routine, I do appreciate Great Music. I'm not quite as good as I used to be, but neither are you, Gal. Will be 66 next birthday. Still have the rhythm and love life.
Put some spice in your life and don't let this CD get away. Please, just get it today.
A great introduction and sampling........2005-08-23
Prior to this album, the only ragtime I really knew was "The Entertainer" and "Maple Leaf Rag". I don't know how this album fares for enthusiasts, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It introduced me to several different composers. The way the album is organized by giving you a two or three song block by each composer is good. As you listen to this, you can easily hear the different styles from one composer to another. As for the recording quality, I don't have any complaints whatsoever. Each note is clear without much noticable fuzz or hissing. The versions of Scott Joplin's songs are played a bit brash and speedy when compared to Joshua Rifkin, but I think they sound livlier because of it. Overall a solid release.

Customer Reviews:
The legend and the poet create classic mood music.......2007-06-08
A relatively obscure album that should be in the library of all who love Sinatra. Rod McKuen is relatively obscure these days, which makes this album a treasure. Recommended for quiet listening to be enjoyed with wine and fond memories of the 70s...or wishful thinking that you had been there, too.
Frank Sinatra and Rod McKuen music.......2006-08-24
Delightfully surprised when I searched for Rod McKuen items to find a CD by the "most romantic singer" of the 20th century! Its quality is superb and more than expected because Frank not only sings but speaks some of Rod's poetry! And-- Amazon got it to me so quickly, even though I selected the "free shipping" method.
A Most Underrated Sinatra Offering.......2006-04-28
I'm not sure why this Album is often overlooked when Sinatra's Reprise period is discussed. Frank's interpretation of Rod McKuen's poetry is "Haunting" if I can use that word. Not only was Frank in excellent voice for this album, but his poetry readings were amazing. Given his acting ability he delivers palpable sentiment and captures the essence of Rod McKuens theme of being alone and being lonely; something Sinatra conveys like no other. This is very much a "Mood piece" which deftly alternates song and poetry. Don Costa's orchestra provides a delicate balance of soaring strings and bluesy saxophones. Frank says in the liner notes that McKuens work "got inside me". It definitely gets inside me every time I listen to it.
TWO A.M. FRANCIS ALBERT--THE BEST!.......2006-04-24
Why this album is not available on USA Reprise is beyond me. In 1969 Frank and poet and songwriter Rod McKuen got together to record a song cycle specifically composed by McKuen for The Voice. In the tradition of NO ONE CARES and WHERE ARE YOU, this is Sinatra for two in the morning. Sinatra for the time of clubs closing and going home by yourself.
The cycle goes from song to poetry reading and back again, and Sinatra shows with every turn how the art of song and the art of acting are one and the same: his reading of lyrics was always the very best. Your heart will ache as you recognize the pain that the Man Alone is going through, especially if you have ever gone through that same thing. Great, great stuff.
I agree that "Love's Been Good To Me" sounds a bit out of kilter on this collection, but perhaps the placement of this song is intended to be a look backward, a rose-tinted remembrance of loves past, not love lost present.
Again, this is not the Big Band, Swingin' Sinatra which inhabited most of his Sixties albums. This is the intimate Sinatra, the very personal Sinatra.
One of his very best albums.
Sinatra does what he does best!.......2006-03-11
No one brings the words to a song better than Sinatra. His mature voice touches your soul. This one is for listening alone or with your most intimate partner.

Smokin' Fingers! .......2007-02-15
Okay, I confess that as a Harry James fan, I orignally bought this CD to get the "Woo-Woo" cut with Harry and Mr. Ammons. But upon listening to the rest of the tracks....HOLY SMOKES, this guy can flat out PLAY!! These recordings are classic examples of boogie woogie piano playing. If I may paraphrase another Amazon reviewer: "If your foot doesn't start tapping to this, you need surgery." This is boogie woogie piano played by a master. Technically speaking, the older tracks from the 1930s are well recorded and sound great (as long as you allow for 1930s recording technology). But regardless of the fidelity, you will be captured by the sheer piano playing skill of Albert Ammons as well as (on several tracks) Pete Johnson. And for the piano player who is looking for an example of how to play boogie, I especially recommend the final cut, "Swanee River Boogie." Listen to how Mr. Ammons begins by setting the basic pattern with his left hand, then adds in a bouncy version of the melody with his right hand, then takes off with his right hand and swings it! I've played a little piano in my time and I can tell you, this guy is more than good, he's amazing! I'm glad I got the Harry James cut, but WOW, what a bonus to pick up all of this great boogie woogie!
memories of electronic free skill..........2007-01-05
Ammons and his peers were pure, raw, high energy artists without the control issues of electronic music. They made a mistake and if it sounded good it was considered a gift and if not, a life lesson. Great music to get up and coffee with to prepare for a day you want accomplishment in.
Boogie Woogie Man by Albert Ammons.......2005-04-03
Wow, Wow, Wow. This CD is incredible. If you love boogie woogie for piano then you are in for a real treat! Albert Ammons is the master of boogie woogie piano.
The best Boogie-Wogie CD in my collection..........2000-08-29
Albert Ammons is the king of Boogie-Woogie, this CD has a great cross section of his greatest sessions, some with many other jazz legends, best of all you can dance to all of these tunes. Highly Recommended.

Recorded in 1963, this record finds tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon at the top of his game during his Blue Note days. Leading a high-profile quartet comprised of pianist Bud Powell, drummer Kenny Clarke, and bassist Pierre Michelot, Gordon leaps through the complex "Scrapple from the Apple" with youthful aplomb and then nestles deep inside the bluesy lyricism of "Willow Weep for Me." Gordon's strengths as a balladeer resonate beautifully on "Stairway to the Stars," while his bebop prowess flexes mightily on "A Night in Tunisia." The rhythms crackle, the solos fly; Our Man In Paris is essential Dexter. --John Murph

Customer Reviews:
Superb.......2007-07-02
This 1963 album finds Dexter Gordon in sparkling form. He is backed by Bud Powell on Piano, Pierre Michelot bass and Kenny Clarke drums. Its one of the best sessions Gordon ever recorded and is an essential purchase for any Jazz fan.
Dexter Gordon is in fine form throughout the album. Just take the opening Charlie Parker classic 'Scrapple from the Apple'. The theme is stated and Gordon takes the first solo. Three and a half minutes later he finishes. Theres no apparent repetition here, or use of a stock of standard riffs that you might hear with a lesser musician. Throughout this solo he is inventive using the full range of the Saxophones marvellous palette. The other stand-out track on here for me is his version of 'A Night in Tunisia'. Whether he's throwing in a quote from 'Summertime' or bending notes on this form Gordon was up there with the very best. On a few moments in his solo on Tunisia I was reminded of Coltranes Soprano solos. Whilst there is no doubt that in his early career Gordon was an undoubted influence on Coltrane I wonder if at this stage Gordon was actually being influenced by Coltrane.
Its worth mentioning the appearance of Bud Powell on the album. He was the most important Jazz pianist before Bill Evans arrived in the late 1950's. Sadly he suffered from mental health problems and his playing later in his career (from the late 1950's onwards) could be erratic. On this recording he isn't the whirlwind of 10 years earlier, but his playing is mostly consistent and considered of sufficient standard for 'Like Someone In Love' to be put out as a bonus track on the CD.
Parisian Soul Music.......2006-06-03
I've given up trying to choose my favorite Dexter album, because it's always the one I happen to be playing. I thought I might be able to pass this one up--not close enough to the culmination of Dexter's resurgence, too late in Bud's career, too far from the Blue Note studios, too dependent on a French (or expatriate) rhythm section.
Strike all of the above. Dexter never played with "abandon," but this recording is probably as close as he comes to it. He's on fire for each of the tunes, complete and fresh phrases flowing from his horn in musical narratives containing more than the usual number of serendipitous quotes and allusions. At times it seems like no end is in sight, as the master storyteller is in Homeric, epic form. He handles the four-bar break on "Night in Tunisia" as impressively as Bird but with half the number of notes.
I wouldn't call the performances on this album superior to Dexter's "Love for Sale" (on "Go!"), "Tanya" or "King Neptune" (on "One Flight Up") or "Body and Soul" (on "The Panther"), but it's definitely in the same league and should be essential not just for fans of L.T. but for anyone who's serious about the art of improvisation.
Powell loses his place a couple of times (forgetting whether he's on the first, second or fourth chorus of a 32-bar song) but makes quick, virtually undetectable recoveries. Moreover, his fingering is precise, his melodic lines fluid and complex yet swinging. And the fact that the original recording was made by a French engineer insures that the piano, though somewhat distorted (see below), has a "realistic" or personal and natural quality distinguishing it from the usual Blue Note piano sound.
Count this one among Dexter's top 3-4 recordings, which is high praise indeed for a player as consistently brilliant as he. Dexter in Paris must be the next best thing to April in Paris. If there's a caveat, it's the quality of the audio. I was so hopeful that the "RVG Remastered Edition" would be an improvement over both the LP and preceding CD version, that I shelled out for the session for a third time. Disappointingly, Dexter's tenor still sounds compressed, compartmentalized, and even grating, and Bud's piano still carries that trace of distortion. In spite of these obstacles, the substance of this recording simply will not be denied.
SENSATIONAL .......2005-02-03
Dexter is in great form here and rate the record as highly as his sentational "Go" album. Buy it and and you will enjoy this great music.
Our Man in Paris.......2004-09-25
Of all the albums Dexter did after the bebop era, this does the best job of giving the listener that same feeling that people got from listening to him back in the '40s. I'd say that this is primarily due to his choice of personnel on this particular date in Paris, which inlcudes the amazing Bud Powell on piano, an amazing French bassist named Pierre Michelot, and the one of the greatest jazz drummers from the bebop era, Kenny Clarke. The choice of tunes for this album also has to do with maintaining that feeling, since two of the tunes were Charlie Parker staples ("Scrapple from the Apple" and "A Night in Tunisia"), one was one of THE tunes to know in the '40s ("Broadway"),and two lovely ballads that were covered a lot during that time ("Willow Weep for Me", which has a very laid-back feeling to it that is the most unique Dexter ballad performance I've ever heard, and his lovely interpretation of "Stairway to the Stars", which has a very similar feeling to his ballad performances on "Go!"). Added to this superb album are two bonus tracks (Gershwin's classic, "Our Love is Here to Stay", and a wonderful trio reading of "Like Someone in Love", which shows off Powell's skills greatly.) Overall, if you are a fan of Charlie Parker, old Dexter from the '40's, or just a plain out jazz fan, "Our Man in Paris" is for you.
One of Blue Note's best albums.Dex,Bud and Klook in Paris!!.......2003-09-29
Here is a very very essential album.One of Blue Note's most essential records.Paris,May 23,1963: Dexter Gordon,ts,Bud Powell,p,Kenny Clarke,dms and top french jazz bass player,Pierre Michelot,the only survivor of this outstanding quartet;or Dex meets the "Three Bosses",as the Bud/Klook/Michelot trio was called.Initially,Dexter should have recorded with Kenny Drew a set of tunes of his own;but it was decided to hire Bud,who was living in Paris the last years of his very short life,and logically,Michelot and Clarke followed.The bunch of new tunes written by Dex were forgotten,and everybody chose to play standards.Bud,among several troubles,could hardly learn new things at this time;but he was a giant when he was asked to play his repertoire,and the proof is here.Put together one of the most magnificent disciples of both Pres and Bird,the most awesome pianist with Hines and Tatum,and the father of modern jazz drumming,son of Jo Jones,add one of the best french musicians on bass,and you'll get some sublime music.Here may be Dexter Gordon's most magnificent album;his Lesterian roots meet some Golson and even Rollins' and Coltrane's influences ("Night in Tunisia");
his swing is purely incredible;Kenny Clarke's drumming is simply out of this world,so simple and yet so hardly swinging;maybe the most essential jazz drumming with Jo Jones' and Sam Woodyard's.And Pierre Michelot's bass support is really a very great one.
What about the tunes ? Here are essential versions of Bird's "scrapple from the apple",Dizzy's "Night in Tunisia",here is a sublime version of the incredible Ann Ronnell's evergreen,"willow weep for me",including superb solos by Bud and Pierre, here is the old "Broadway",in which Bud salutes Basie (the final notes),here are wonderful ballads,"stairway to the stars","our love is here to stay",and finally here is a trio track by the "Three Bosses","like someone in love",one of Bud's favorites.
Listening again to this album,it seems almost incredible to me to think that this music was recorded 40 years ago.It sounds more and more younger than most of today's jazz records. Here is not only Dexter's best effort, here is one of the most essential records of the history of jazz; a mixture of classical,Kansas City oriented music (Dexter's blowing will reminds you of Lester,Hershell Evans,Illinois Jacquet,Buddy Tate) and post-bop music (shades of Golson,Trane);Kenny Clarke, one of the monuments of jazz drumming with the Father,Jo Jones, and the disciples,Woodyard,Haynes,Blakey,Elvin J.,Butler,Lenny McBrowne,Roy Brooks,Ed Thigpen,Roach, etc,Kenny Clarke is at his most magnificent playing. Here is a gem in Blue Note's amazing catalog.Something you have to listen to !!!

Released in 1996, Shack-man may be the quintessential MMW disc. From the opening cover of the traditional spiritual "Is There Anyone Here that Love My Jesus" to the mellow swirls of the closing "Kenny," the emphasis is on the almighty groove; though John Medeski (here pumping everything from Hammond B-3s to toy pianos) and bassist Chris Wood are much flashier players, it's drummer Billy Martin who really gets (and keeps) the party going. The laid-back, sunshine-and-palm-trees vibe of Hawaii (where Shack-man was recorded) creeps into some of the tracks, but the overall feel is more New Orleans than Waikiki. --Dan Epstein
Customer Reviews:
Exceptional.......2007-02-23
This is undoubtedly one of the best works by MMW. I think this cd should be owned by anyone who is into Medeski Martin & Wood, because it really kind of shows you what they are all about.
The groove never stops.......2007-02-04
This is my third MMW CD, and I cant really pick a favorite, but I like this one a lot. The funky B3 always sounds so great and soulful. The cool grooves really set a mood the puts me in my own soulful mood. There are quite a bit of styles here, I hear some hiphop along with the funk stuff. The best tracks are "Is There Anybody Here That Love My Jesus" and "Bubblehouse". "Friday Afternoon in the Universe is also a good album.
groovy, funky, and out of this world.......2005-07-30
this was problably the 3rd mmw cd that i listened to and this was the cd that made me realize had amazing they are..
this album is the first one where mmw takes it to a more electronic, groovy sounding kind of level..
if you have just gotten into mmw, this is a cd that must be bought..
A DEFINITE HEAD BOPPER
another great MMW cd.......2005-07-12
What more can be said than another great cd from start to end with the awesome song bubblehouse stuck in the middle. If you get a chance to see them live, do, you wont regret the decision, they are one of the best jazz jam bands around.
Avant-garde jazz disguised as greasy funk?.......2004-04-04
I purchased this CD after a friend turned me on to a live recording of this material plus the fact that I Love A Go-Go by John Scofield. This music is a brilliant blend of jazz and greasy funk. If you are like me you will first be turned on by the eternal greasy groove and the quirky keyboard lines. Some of this album is jam and a little repetitive but it cooks so well that you don't seem to care. After I got past the funk and started really listening a little deeper I found a sense of great interplay and structure that develop in some of the tunes.
Billy Martin is one of my favorite drummers but he could frustrate most bass players by pushing and pulling the beat like a rubberband. Give credit to Chris Woods' since of feel, it can't be beat. John Medeski is......John Medeski! Who else could overdrive a clavinet through a wah pedal until it feedbacks? There are avant-garde moments throughout this disc but they're not overwhelming (like free jazz).
