One of the few contemporary bands to land a decidedly roots-rock song on the charts with 2004's Grammy-winning "Heaven," Los Lonely Boys solidified their status as youngsters with an established sound on their first disc. On this highly anticipated studio followup, all talk of the sophomore jinx dissipates with the opening soul-drenched riff rocker "My Way." Although horns are added for extra drama, the three Garza brothers nail this groove as Henry's Stevie Ray Vaughan-fortified guitar powers one of the boys' most fiery performances. Supporter and mentor Willie Nelson joins on the wah-wah driven, Waylon Jennings-styled "Outlaws," as does the brothers' musician father Enrique Sr. Tough midtempo ballads such as "Home" and the very Santana-ish "I Never Met a Woman" follow in the footsteps of "Heaven" as candidates for slow dance song of the year.
Anyone entranced by the Garzas' debut will be thrilled by this classy followup that tightens some of the loose ends but displays additional confidence resulting from two years of nearly nonstop road work. The band spotlights its Tex-Mex roots on the accordion-driven "Texican Style," where near-perfect vocal harmonies drive an irresistible bluesy shuffle. Most encouraging is that Los Lonely Boys haven't succumbed to commercial pressure since their surprise hit debut. Rather, they have refined and organically expanded their approach, and crafted another classy, committed, radio-friendly Americana gem that meshes blues, Mexican, and soul with a spicy topping of hot-sauce musicianship. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description
Since their worldwide breakout in 2004, Texican trio Los Lonely Boys - brothers Henry, JoJo and Ringo Garza - have achieved multi-platinum album sales, a Grammy Award (their monster hit 'Heaven' won Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group in 2005), and widespread acclaim from critics, fans and other musicians. All those experiences and more inform their commanding, propulsive new album, 'Sacred,'.
'Sacred' finds the Boys writing and playing with a new confidence, stretching their subject matter and arrangements on the album's thirteen songs, all of which they wrote or co-wrote. 'Sacred' opens with the killer one-two punch of "Diamonds," the album's anthemic first single, and "My Way," a defiant guitar shuffle that reminds listeners why Guitar World magazine named Henry Garza the Breakthrough Artist of the Year in a 2005 cover story. "My Way" also finds LLBs adding a horn section to their signature mix for the first time. Elsewhere on the album, they add other new colors to their arrangements including button accordion, Hammond B3 and Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer electric piano and Henry's virtuosic Harmonica playing.
Other highlights on 'Sacred' include "I Never Met A Woman," the Boys' most soulful ballad to date, the impossibly catchy lament of "Roses," and "Outlaws," a song which features two distinguished guest vocalists: LLBs mentor Willie Nelson, and their father, Enrique Garza Sr. Mr. Garza - a talented Tejano and country musician in his own right - taught his sons to play their instruments, and enlisted them to be his backing band from an early age. His appearance on 'Sacred' brings the first family of Texican rock n' roll full circle.

Los Lonely Boys.......2007-07-18
This band of brothers has crated a new sound by combing many different sounds, not an easy thing to do these days.
I enjoy the Spanish songs as much as the English ones and I don't speak Spanish!
I was blow away by the Los Lonely Boys!
Young Music Gods!!!.......2007-07-14
They did it again!! This is an awesome follow up: I Never Met A Woman( Love it!! Love it!! Love it!!!), My Way,Texican style,Diamonds etc... are just the ticket to great listening...looking forward to more of their music in the future! Orale Muchachos! & Thank you!
The return of soulful guitar.......2007-06-22
Only a handful of guys out there delivering the goods when it comes to really great guitar with soul. The Lonely Boys nail it though, on both of their records, and this one is worthy on the strength of four songs alone. You will problaby like more of it, too. The first three songs I cannot stop playing, and 'Outlaws' is also essential. I like the rest, but those four are pure pleasure. Open up the tiki bar on the back patio and add those four tunes to the mix, and discover a few others on the disc to add as well. Excellent stuff.
no go.......2007-06-08
loved their first cd - hated this one - not as original and seemed hurriedly put together
Loved it..................2007-05-13
Being a survivor of the 60's I hear so much of the greats in the Lonely Boys style. What a great recipe, A little Doobies, a dash of Santana and a sprinkle of those amazing Allman twin leads, one can't help but feel like you've been served up a 5 course meal. And of course, the cherry on top is their Texican style.

Having successfully fused music and politics from their start, inspiring both moshing and young minds in the process, Rage Against the Machine emerges in peak form with merely their third album in seven years. Guitarist Tom Morello is one of the most distinctive and innovative players of his era, and his foil, vocalist/lyricist Zack De La Rocha, is as unrelenting and inspiring as ever on The Battle of Los Angeles. Rage, whose past antics include performing naked with duct tape over their mouths to protest censorship, released Battle on Election Day, but the politics of the group can be separated from the sounds. Indeed, the 45 minutes of mayhem heard here can be enjoyed solely as rousing aggro hip-hop rock. There's more variety found on Battle than on its predecessors, however. "Sleep Now in the Fire" is one of their most straight-ahead rock tunes. The trippy guitar on "Calm Like a Bomb" is out there even for the adventurous Morello. And "Born a Broken Man" serves up lovely musical interludes. Overall, the more finely honed Rage heard on Battle may not inspire a generation of young revolutionaries, but they still stir up more mutinous spirit than the rest of the current rock pack. --Katherine Turman

The Battle For Los Angeles.......2007-04-24
Rage Against The Machine-The Battle For Los Angeles *****
Many a Rage fan as well as critic well tell you that The Battle Of Los Angeles is the very best album that Rage ever made. Is this the case, is this really better then the self titled debut Rage Against The Mahine, probably. But you will have to be the judge of that one. One thing is for sure if this isnt the bands all time best effort it is a vert close second. The bands cover album Renagades was good, but this is better, Evil Empire was a killer album but once again this takes the cake of that one as well. The bands only equal comparason is the debut.
The Battle Of Los Angeles is a solid album through and through, not a bad track to be heard. Being released in late 1999, early 2000, at the dawn of a new millenium when the band was reaching its breaking point and on the eve of spliting they managed to hold it together and create one of the best rock albums of the last 25 years. Zack De La Rochas lyrics were the most focust and coherent they had ever been, and his vocal delivery is insane. Tim C, and Brad Wilk who may make up the greatest rhythm section in all of rock n' roll hold the album together as a whole. Then there is Tom who once again raised the bar as far as what is possible with the guitar. Tom Morello is easily one of the greatest guitarist ever to pick up the six string. Not only with his effects pedels but without them as well.
Songs like the major hit singles 'Testify' 'Guerrilla Radio' and the phenomenol 'Sleep Now In The Fire' helped to propel the album to the number one spot and sell millions of copies. Those three songs have gone on to become radio staples still seven yers after the album was released. 'Calm Like A Bomb' 'Mic Check' and 'Born As Ghosts' are similure and slower songs that really are nice for a change of pace. 'Born Of A Broken Man' is one of the better songs the band ever recorded. You can really here the punk influence on this song. The album closes with 'War Within A Breath' which is the prefect song to close the album.
Once you end the album all the messages in the songs come together into one and you can really here the cry for the great state of California that they love and how it has gone so far down hill. And in the end The Battle Of Los Angeles is an amazing album by on eof the greatest rock bands of all time.
If you like Rage, this is the best album.......2007-04-03
I like all of the Rage albums, but this one is better than the other two. More metal-oriented guitar and the songs are more political. If you had to buy one Rage album, this is the one to get.
Fantastic Album.......2006-08-21
Rage Against the Machine is a band I only started listening to out of curiosity. I'd never heard any of their music, but I had gotten into Audioslave and wanted to see what these guys were like. Rage is a unique band in many ways. First off, this album (their final album, which was called Album of the Year by many Rock magazines; Even Time Magazine in fact) is amazing. Every song is good and not just in the sense, it's not bad. You can listen to each of these songs a few times over, there's not one track I'd skip over while listening to it. Tom Morello (who does stuff with a guitar that the best guitar players in the world couldn't do) is in top form; Tim Commerford cranks out some great basslines here (most notably in "Calm Like a Bomb"), and Brad Wilk is of course great. Zack De La Rocha's vocals and lyrics are very angry and very political here; He makes some genuine points though. That's one of the things I find most impressive about Rage. A lot of bands that do political songs, wind up with good lyrics and bad songs. It doesn't even matter if you're listening to the lyrics on this album; The music is still completely enjoyable. If you're looking to buy a really good CD, then get this. Here are the tracks and occasional in-depth commentary:
1. Testify-5/5
2. Guerilla Radio-5/5-One of my favorite songs on the album.
3. Calm Like a Bomb-5/5-One of my favorite Rage songs. It's really catchy and you can't beat Tom Morrello's riffs.
4. Mic Check-5/5-I love the lyrics; I love the chorus. Great song.
5. Sleep Now in the Fire-5/5-The guitar riff in this song is awesome. As are the lyrics; One of my favorite songs on here.
6. Born of a Broken Man-5/5-Zack De La Rocha speaks the verses and then pours energy into the chorus. I know some people who don't like this song, I love it.
7. Born as Ghosts-5/5-My 2nd favorite song on the album.
8. Maria-5/5
9. Voice of the Voiceless-5/5-It's short, but it's a great song.
10. New Millenium Homes-5/5-This probably ties as my 2nd favorite song. It sounds a little like Bulls on Parade, but the lyrics and music are awesome.
11. Ashes in the Fall-5/5-The music is awesome. De La Rocha whispering "Like ashes in the fall" is kind of creepy; Angry lyrics that definitely get their point across.
12. War Within a Breath-5/5-And a very impressive album closer. Some of the best drumming is on this track.
GRADE: A
Better than "Evil Empire.".......2006-04-08
This is a definite improvement from "Evil Empire," which incorporated too much alternative elements, these tracks are more hard-rockish than on the previous album but not quite at the level on their self-titled. Tom Morello touched up his unique style of solos into something that sounds good rather than weird in EE, especially in "Guerilla Radio." If you're a big fan of Timmy C.'s basslines, this is where he shines the most. Zach's lyrics and rhyming are really centered around the problems in Mexico and the 2000 Presidential Election, these have also improved from their sophomore slump.
The only annoying track on here was "Mic Check," everything else was good, especially "Guerilla Radio," "Ashes in the Fall," "Maria," and "Voice of the Voiceless."
Its not great, but its defitely better than "Significant Crap" from Limp Bizs**t.
If you're a Rage' fan, I suggest you pick this up.
Worth owning for one song, but the rest are very good too.......2006-03-29
I'll keep this short and sweet since, while I think this album was excellent, I don't view "The Battle of Los Angeles" to be the band's finest work. I think that's a toss-up between their debut and the nigh-perfect "Evil Empire." This band told it like it was, is, and will likely, unfortunately, continue to be each and every time they released an album.
However, this one digs into the band's favorite topics a little deeper and what it uncovers is hideous and depressing. From songs ranging about the destitution-to-desperation of the poor in Mexico ("Maria") to the us-against-them nature of abandoned/forgotten ethic groups/gangs in the inner city ("Born As Ghosts") to a song about one of their biggest causes, the freedom of (perhaps wrongly) convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal and other so-called criminals that may be in the same boat ("Voice of the Voiceless"), this album doesn't relent until the CD ends.
However, the one track that has always stuck out in my mind as the glimpse behind the curtain to which all others should be compared is the masterful "Ashes in the Fall," perhaps the band's most gut-wrenching, soul-searing track in its entire career.
The song takes an unflinching look at poverty and the plight of the lower class, immigrants and homeless: the very people that the government should be taking care of that it instead allows to fend for themselves. Starving, desperate, abused, and neglected, these people see no other way out of their situation than resorting to violence and crime...actions for which they are arrested and imprisoned, if not killed outright. The song's most gripping moment is when Zach de la Rocha mockingly screams, "Ain't it funny how the factory doors close 'round the time that the school doors close? 'Round the time that the doors of the jail cell open up to greet you like the Reaper?"
In other words, while most children are entering/leaving school, the pvverty-stricken are walking into factories where they can be promised low wages and grueling work until the whistle blows. If not that, then finding trouble and expending what little life is left inside them in the confines of a prison cell. It is a bleak image and all too true in the darker corners of every city in the United States.
As others have said, the reference to the new sound being just like the old sound is a snide reminder to the listener that the grandiose speeches of the government's appointed representatives are just echoes of all that was said by those who came before them. And all the while, a voice can be heard in the undercurrent calling for the expulsion of all "non-natives" in favor of the so-called "chosen" people of God, a direct contradiction to everything the founders of the nation believed it should be about, according to the Constitution.
It is an exceptional song on the strength of its lyrics alone, but the band truly outdid itself with the music, from the high-pitched cry of the guitar to the soft rhthym of the bass during the build to the song's final crescendo.
I don't know if there's a human being that can listen to this song and not feel his or her soul quail in horror at the images it creates. If such a person exists, I hope we never meet.

Between their name, stage introductions spoken in a uniquely twisted form of Spanglish, bizarre lucha libre attire, and ongoing association with Latino rockabilly revivalist Big Sandy, Spanish has always been a major facet of Los Straitjackets' shtick. So it's little surprise that the Nashville-based garage/surf/twang/trash rockers decided to head south of the border for an all-covers album. You don't need to hablar español to shimmy, shimmy, shake along with the quartet. Guest vocals from Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos (who also produced the disc), Little Willie G. of East L.A.'s vintage Thee Midniters, and Big Sandy bring a soulful strut to these punchy stompers. True to form, liberties are taken with the song titles: "Hang on Sloopy" is now "Hey Lupe," "Bony Maronie" comes out as "Popotitos," and "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" inexplicably appears as "El Microscopico Bikini." But that's all part of the fun as the masked men and singers swing through hot-tamale versions of signature hits from the Kinks, the Troggs, the Coasters, and others. Although the Fab Four aren't here as songwriters, their spirit energizes rocking renderings of "Dizzy Miss Lizzy," "Slow Down," and "Anna," all early Beatles staples. The Straitjackets haven't entirely abandoned the instrumentals from their own early years, as the scorching "Whittier Blvd." attests. Slow dancers will swoon to ballads such as "Dejenme Llorar" and Barbara Lynn's sublime "You'll Lose a Good Thing." Liner notes tell us that Spanish covers of many of these tunes managed to become moderate hits in the '60s and '70s, but it's safe to say these fresh versions will spice up any carnival. Let the fiesta begin! --Hal Horowitz

Great CD.......2007-07-14
Fun band - great at parties. You'll want their other CDs after listening to this one.
good pick!.......2007-07-13
This is my first Los Straight Jackets CD but it won't be my last! Really enjoy the old yet new sound!
Mucho Fun!.......2007-05-26
Great song selections, rock solid playing and vocals from some terrific performers... what more could you ask for? I have no idea why one person gave this release a single star. This is a fun album. Los Straitjackets & Big Sandy also put on a heck of a live show by themselves, but when they tour together... watch out! You won't stop dancing for about a month. This disc is highly recommended.
What a disappointment!.......2007-05-13
A new Los Straitjackets CD? Produced by Cesar Rojas? Sounds like a winning combo doesn't it?
'Fraid not mi amigos. This CD is a major work of spam. Absolutley no originality and not even a trace of
enthusiasum. I'm sorry..I am a fan of Rojas and the masked men, but this is not a work too be proud of.
Lackluster vocals by Lil Willie G and even less effort from Big Sandy. Pass on this one carnales.

California's Los Lobos are the reigning kings of Tex-Mex/Rock Espanol. But this debut CD by the San Angelo, Texas band Los Lonely Boys might herald a changing of the guard. This is truly a band of brothers, led by guitarist/vocalist Henry Garza and his younger, bass-and-drum-playing siblings Jojo and Ringo. Like a lot of groups, they had to move away to achieve fame--in their case, to Nashville. But after the release of their EP, Willie Nelson heard them, put them on tour as his opening act, and recorded them at his studio. Stylistically, the Garza brothers' bilingual songs about love and life combine Stevie Ray Vaughan blues, Santana-style guitar licks and R&B. Nelson helps out on guitar, with Reese Wynans on keyboards. Produced by Keb Mo and B.B. King producer John Porter, the music is honest, driving, and down home, especially on the organ-filled uptempo tracks "Senorita" and "Tell Me Why." The stinging guitar solo on the Afro-anthemic "Onda" recalls the '70s grooves Santana built his chops on, while "The Answer" and "More than Love" are raw power ballads that show off this group's dynamism and diversity. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

I recently saw them in concert and they just blew me away! Listening to this CD just brings back the power of talent I discovered at their concert.I thought Heaven was great but hadn't listened to their other tracks and every song on this CD is really high caliber. They are true musicans. I can't believe how talented they are at this age. Track 8 Onda is my favorite! It moves me and reminds me of past, present and future. Past greats SRV,Santana, their present greatness & their wonderful future to come!

Awesome music! My sister-in-law, a native Texan, turned me on to Los Lonely Boys a couple of years ago, and I haven't missed an album since. They have such a unique sound with a blues, Tex-mex, rock 'n roll mix that sets them apart from the crowd. I here the next Eric Clapton, Chet Atkins, Jimi Hendrix kind of talent coming from Henry Garza. And Ringo and JoJo can hold their own with many musicians playing much longer. I hope to be listening to Los Lonely Boys for many years to come!

if this is blues i am hard of hearing. i find this ok i had a copy gave to me. not worth buying, i find it weak, and to say henery sounds like s.r.v. what an insult. what has the music industry come to if this is the best there is to offer.
Great Tex-Mex Blues Rock.......2007-03-09
In the great tradition of Los Lobos and Stevie Ray Vaughn, Los Lonely Boys provide a great selection of music.
Los Lonely Boys.......2007-02-23
Although I'm sure I'm not part of the target market for this album (over 50!)I absolutely LOVE this album. My son bought this for me a couple of Christmases ago, and as another reviewer mentioned, I listened to the whole CD without skipping any tracks and fell in love with the sound.
Both instumental and vocal harmonies are fabulous; no one voice or instrument overpowers another. If you enjoy good, harmonious guitar and vocals, you should listen to this CD. If you have a soul, you'll be hooked from the first note.

Two-and-a-half hours of bliss.......2007-04-04
This may be the best money I've ever spent. I got 2-1/2 hours of bliss for less than what I'd usually pay for one CD -- and you know how it is with music. You buy an album because of a song or two that you love, and you find that you like maybe half the songs on it. There's not a single selection in this one that I would've left out. It includes Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, performed by Pepe Romero on the guitar with the Acadamy of St. Martin in the Fields. I needed to replace my old LP recording of that. But I also get 30 other classical compositions and traditional Spanish pieces, each special in its own way.
Have you ever heard music that you wanted to last forever, maybe even to dive inside and live there for a while, immersing yourself in sound? That's how I feel about this collection. The only problem I have with it is that I bought it thinking it might be nice to listen to while I write. Not so. It's terrible for that. I'll sit with my hands poised above the laptop keyboard, assuring myself I'll get some work done while I listen. The music takes hold and carries me away.
I'm not expert at describing this or any type of music. I just know what I love. You might too, if you enjoy classical or Spanish guitar -- unless you have absurd expectations about combining listening with work.
not what i expected.......2007-03-26
This CD for me was a waste of money. Its just not what i thought it would be. Others may enjoy it but for me..it wasnt what i was hoping to hear.
excellent guitar performances.......2006-07-27
Outstanding guitar performances. I gave it only 4 stars because I do not personally like some of the compositions.
Essential Guitar..........2005-07-26
Up until this collection, I'd never heard the "Cavatina" played in the Deer Hunter movie. After hearing it, I could play it all day and not tire of it! It moves me that much, considering that it's almost "not" a classical guitar selection. The rest of the music is first rate! Excellent playing, but the "Cavatina..."
Buy it and enjoy!!!!
Lives up to its Name!.......2005-06-10
If you only bought this double CD set, you'd have a good starter collection of classical guitar music. It includes most of the standards, as well as rarer pieces. In addition to the many solo pieces, there are several excerpts from orchestral works, with Rodrigo's indispensible Adagio from "Concierto de Aranjuez" topping the list. There are also several flamenco numbers included, complete with heel taps and castanets.
The recording quality is uniformly good, even on the tracks by Segovia. I don't know if they were remastered or recorded late in his career, but they're free of the surface noise present in so many of his recordings. The set clocks in at a generous 2 1/2 hours - one of the greatest deals in instrumental music; this is not a "bargain" quality set. Listen to the samples online - great stuff.
My only mild criticism is in the marketing. The advertising features John Williams and Julian Bream. Each contributes exactly one track. I would have enjoyed more pieces by them for stylistic comparison. But the less well-known (at least to guitar music neophytes like me) artists are every bit as good, and I intend to obtain more of their work.

Great Album.......2007-07-01
My parents owned this album then lost it along with other great albums many years ago, now I have a copy of this in LP (record format). The original album contains 3 records with a total of 30 songs and I have never been able to find the exact release in CD format. Most CD releases like this one only contain a partial listing of the original album. If they ever release it in its' full glory I will buy it in a second. I can only say that I feel sorry for all individuals that do not understand or speak Spanish, because great songs like these can never be translated into English with the same fervor, and gut wrenching soulfulness that this album brings.
I can genuinely say this album in its' LP glory is one of my greatest treasures.
How Divine!.......2007-05-21
Have you ever had a CD that the minute you heard it you fell instantly in love with it? That's what happens with Canta en Espanol. It doesn't matter if you understand Spanish or or, the beauty, poetry and melodic nature of the music transcends any language barrier. The guitars are soft and gentle, the voices lush and filled with emotion and passion that can only be Latin. The result is incredibly romantic. Listen to it with someone you love or someone you'd like the sparks to fly.
Eydie Gorme in all her glory!.......2007-04-01
Combine the gorgeous voice of Eydie Gorme, with the talented music trio Los Panchos, and what do you get? Some of the most amazing, beautiful music ever recorded!
Although she's best-known for her collaborations with husband Steve Lawrence, Miss Eydie Gorme also enjoyed a rich and popular partnership with the Los Panchos, and they recorded a few albums together; the best probably being 'Canta En Espanol'.
On this album (remastered in stereo for the very first time), Eydie Gorme gets to wrap her sensuous, velvet voice around such pieces as "Amor", "Sabor A Mi", "Noche de Ronda", and "Historia de un Amor".
Gorme's phrasing and accents are absolutely spot-on, and the arrangements from Los Panchos are very lush, suiting Gorme's vocals perfectly. For fans of Eydie Gorme, this would be a fine title.

Absolutely Wonderful!.......2007-03-12
I remember listening to this as a child, my mom and grandma would play it. Over the years it was lost during moves. I'm so glad that I was able to find it on CD. I love the music Eydie Gorme's voice is so beautiful.
Wonderful!.......2007-01-30
Absolutely beautiful voice, accompanied by an exceptional Trio (Los Panchos) Highly recommend this CD. , would be perfect if words to the songs were included.

Life Is But A Dream..........2006-08-30
This CD is just pure magic. I know that is such a cliche' thing to say, but it really is. Of course, it really won't appeal to those people who are into EXTREME LIVING...whatever the hell that means, because to me, extreme living is living close to the soul, close to the spirit, close to the Invisible Source that makes and creates all things in and out of Itself.
Debussy was a composer who lived very close to this Invisible Stream. His music reflects a gentleness and yet a strength that flows throughout each composistion. The arrangements are dreamy and mystical and allows one to go into their "inner chamber" and pray in secret to the One who knows their heart as well as their soul.
As much as I love this CD, I tend not to listen to it in the car. I once listened to it while making a routine drive to Santa Monica. The CD stopped and I had somehow missed all of my exits and ended up in Ventura...talk about being in dreamland!
It's a great CD to put in your walkman and go to an outdoor cafe' where you can sip a cafe latte and write poems to an unknown lover whose face you cannot remember, but whose gentle breath is the scent of lavendar...oh, I wax poetic...so sorry...
If you are into quiet and stillness, get this CD...it's truly a breath of fresh air in this noisy, crowded, extreme world we have to be in but not necessarily of...
Peace & Blessings
Beautiful, dreamy.......2006-07-17
This music evokes both emotions and images of life waking up in spring, even being in a magical forest where anything can happen, or floating on clouds. You can just enjoy the music and let your imagination soar or the music can take you into that trance-like state where you can access creative ideas and creative solutions to any problems - and maybe they just dissolve of their own accord.
Fabulous collection !.......2005-09-13
If you like Debussy - whom I have heard called one of the progenitors of ambient music - you will love having his most inspiring and beautiful works together on one cd. These works are tranquil and serene, and yet they don't fade into the background - no matter what you are doing - because they are true art. When this cd is playing you can't help but listen and sigh. My cats love this cd, too.
An excellent introduction to Debussy and French music.......2005-06-30
Compilation CD's like this are an excellent first CD to purchase when first exploring a new composer or style of music ("Expressionism" in Debussy's case). And this Philip's "Set your Life to Music" collection is usually a sure and safe way to do that given their well thought-out selections, themes and quality recordings. This CD here contains many of the most popular, lyrical and enchanting works of the 19th-century French composer, Claude Debussy. The range of selections are diverse and satisfying: from his major solo piano works through his top chamber music (for 2-5 instruments) to the full-blown orchestral selections of great imagery and dreaminess that can transport one into another world of great serenity. (But, there are enough sudden changes in loudness and rhythm to upset any notions of perfect bliss and keep the daydreamer from falling asleep - hence the title, "for Daydreams" and not "for Bedtime" like in other offerings in this Philips' series) Regardless, this CD is an excellent introduction to Claude Debussy as well as being overall relaxing music to enrich one's life.
One interesting music history tidbit on Debussy that might interest the new listener: Even though Debussy did not like the label, his music was labeled "Expressionism" for the similarities to what the French artists like Monet were doing at the same time. In Debussy's case, his intent was to create "emotional impressions" with music that evoked specific moods and images in the mind - not unlike what the "impressionistic painters" were trying to do on canvas using pure color and form to evoke the fleeting, emotional moment of a landscape scene. "Prelude of the Afternoon of the Fawn" is a good example of this dreamy, lingering, emotive style of music.
Dream and Classical music are magic.......2005-02-16
This CD is one of the best among its classical collections. (bach for breakfast is my one of them) It puts me to any place I dream of whenever I listen to this cd. It usually brings me into outer space, or sometimes go to the sky or under the sea. You can also just sit back and relax while listening to the music. In addition, once I get mad or not calm enough, I just put this cd on and it cures my anger.
Classical music is magic.

After variously celebrating their 30th anniversary with the star-studded The Ride, documenting their bracing live shows on Live at the Fillmore and doing a little intimate musical retrenchment on the self-released Acoustic En Vivo, Los Lobos returned to the studio with creative exploration on their minds. The result is their most sonically adventurous, thematically taut collection since the heady days of Kiko and Colossal Head. With lyrics penned mostly by multi-instrumentalist Louis Perez, the album's first-person narrative views a myriad of larger issues through slices of local life, from the immigrants' physical and spiritual travails of "The Valley" and "Hold On" to the liturgical grace of "Little Things" and the haunting impressionism of "The City." The musical tack is even more adventurous, a melange of diverse flavors that ranges from the infectious calo Spanglish patois of Cesar Rosa's "Chuco's Cumbia" and neo-norteno "The Road to Gila Bend" to the chunky r&b groove of "Don't Ask Why," the Caribbean-Latin fusion of "No Pueda Mas" and the shadowy, jazz reflectiveness of the "The Town." The Lobos blend it all into a compelling sonic landscape, one that's tamed the playful, psychedelic spirit of Perez and David Hidalgo's free-spirited Latin Playboys side project and focused it into a band context with rich rewards at every turn. -- Jerry McCulley
Album Description
The 13-track set--fittingly, the disc is the 13th studio album of the band's 30-year-plus career--was recorded over the last several months, with the band doing its own production work. Tchad Blake, who's worked with the group for many of its past albums, handled mixing duties. The album partially reflects the East Los Angeles roots-rockers' experience as de facto immigrants in their own country, as well as unease with the current political situation in the land. The band is currently on an open-ended touring schedule, which is typical of their roadwork.
Customer Reviews:
Los Lobos Back in Town!.......2007-05-06
After a couple of pretty disappointing albums released in the 1990's Los Lobos returned to form with fine albums such as "Good Morning Aztlan" and "The Ride". The band continues the positive direction with 2006 release "The Town and the City". Though never as adventurous and consistent as their two greatest albums "Kiko" and "The Neighborhood", the album contains lots of great music.
More room is given to the soft melodic side of the band which suits the voice of David Hidalgo so well. Highlights for me are the two Hidalgo ballads "If You Were Only Here Tonight" and "Little Things". Among the harder up-beat track "The Road to Gila Bend" stands out - this song would have fitted nicely into the "Kiko" album.
Key songs, of course, are the two title tracks, "The City" and "The Town". "The City" is both rhytmic and grandiose, lyrically dealing with the alluring night-life of the city. "The Town" deals with the darker side of city life. A great bluesy song that makes a perfect ending to another fine Los Lobos album.
This Rocks!.......2007-04-04
This is their best work yet. Saw them last summer and loved them. They got better with age.
wow.......2007-01-28
the next stage in the KIKO evolution.
i have been waiting for this.
Awesome record, you won't be disappointed.......2007-01-19
30 years together and Los Lobos has put out an absolutely solid, wonderful CD. While everyone is out looking for "the next hot thing," Los Lobos has stuck together and continued making great music. This CD grows on me each time I listen to it. Great songwriting, great musicanship, and great production. Easily one of the year's best.
Los Lobos is best when they sick to their roots.......2007-01-17
Really like this CD - don't know what they're saying, but like the way they say it. Have liked these guys since "How Will The Wolf Survive?"

Trance is about as Dutch as windmills, and more than any other DJ, Tiësto is its ambassador. His highly successful In Search of Sunrise series can claim much of the credit for this, and this fifth installment, Los Angeles, delivers in spades. As ever, the man finds his inspiration in the female voice; from Late Night Alumni's "Empty Streets," which pits a bassline that bounces like Silly Putty against Becky Jean Williams's dreamy vocals, to Karen Overton's dancefloor-destroying cover of Billie Ray Martin's "Your Loving Arms," Tiësto again proves himself a master at driving sets to soaring highs with well-placed siren songs. The second disc finds the Dutchman in more progressive territory, luring in the unsuspecting with Pink Elephant's effervescent "LAX" only to drop the hammer with Alex Stealthy's "Something Is Wrong," a track with a disorienting beat that seems to tumble over itself and a haunting melody that sounds as though it were trapped under ice. Tiësto also shows he hasn't lost his affinity for engaging the listener in a test of wills, as in A Boy Called Joni's vertiginous "Green Astronauts." Like all good mixes, the fifth in the ISoS series is after all a study in contrasts. Ironic, perhaps, that with the title Los Angeles the album makes a compelling case that the trance crown won't be leaving Holland anytime soon. --Brent Kallmer

another 5 star performance by tiesto.......2007-07-19
this album is another in the line of great mixes by tiesto. if you love trance like i do then isos 5 is a must buy. i think 4 is still my personal fav due to disc one but i would recomend buying all 5 isos albums. they are worth the money in FULL
what an awesome arsenal for our ears.......2007-07-07
Tiesto, albeit ostentatious, is revolutionizing music, and ISOS5 is a clear example where dj's like him, and Armin are heading. His tracks are eloquent, driving and full of forcefullness, and flowing and no one, anywhere, can do it like Tiesto. People say he is a sell out, well Go ahead and sell out Tiesto, because if you can make albums like this for me and my 100 friends to enjoy, than so be it. Everyone I have given this cd to, really, everyone of them, can't believe how magical it is. Like the previous reviewer, I can be driving in rush hour from Boston and blast ISOS5 and never get sick of it, that is hard for a trance album to stand multiple plays after a year or so.
Tiesto is only starting his protege mixing. I cannot wait for more tracks from him. 'Tiesto IN Concert' is mind boggling, a life altering trance experience.
Anyone hestitating to buy this for perhaps a different dj like Armin B or Van Helden or the like, well they are good, but def. add this to your collection.
SO BRILLIANT!
thanks
TIESTO GIVES US ONE MORE REASON TO HATE HIM!.......2007-06-13
what else is there to say, except stay away- the almighty god of the sound of torment makes us want to rage some more. Please I beg you tiesto, go away and leave us all alone.
Great CD.......2007-05-03
This is a great CD by Tiesto. I love the mixes and sounds presented in Sunrise Vol. 5, and this was the first CD of his that I had ever owned. I especially loved the track "Helsinki Scorchin". Great track to drive to, by the way. I like the faster beat tracks that Tiesto creates/uses, and a lot of that is due to the fact that I like to listen to trance when I'm driving, and it's most fun to drive to fast tracks. The reason why I rated this four stars instead of five is because I have Sunrise Panama and Sunrise Latin America, and I think both of those albums are actually a little bit better that Sunrise Los Angeles, even though they were its predecessors.
keeps me home.......2007-05-02
This cd set of Tiesto's is really great i live in Los Angeles and driving at 80 on L.A.'s most known freeway you can understand that no matter during the day or at night its a really good energetic album my favorite is "moonlight party" because that brings the suspense of speed during the day or night and those loud hits are fantastic you have to pick up a copy
