Moacir Santos is a Brazilian composer, arranger and saxophonist from the first team of Brazilian Jazz. He's one of those artists who are underrated by the big audiences but widely known by those who appreciate inspiration, beauty, intelligence when applicable to music composition and arrangement.

This is the second of his three albums for Blue Note Records, a long time awaited for reissue. Catalog number was BN-LA260-G, recorded in New York, 1974. A natural follower to the first `The Maestro' (from 1972), also a memorable album with the unique Santos' way of doing the thing what includes an intricate shape of samba, an uncommon way of dividing that is unique in his compositions, a kind of registered mark which identifies Santos.

"Saudade" was recorded by an all-star Jazz team with arrangements by Moacir Santos (except for one track arranged by Mark Levine, the pianist for all the tracks). The dream team includes the late Jerome Richardson (with a brilliant flute solo in `Kathy'), Ray Pizzi on tenor sax, bassoon and flute (with beautiful flute and piccolo lines in `The City of LA' and bassoon line in `Suk Cha'), Lee Ritenour on guitar, and Harvey Mason on drums.

Some vocals show up in some tracks what includes some Mr. Santos singing solos along with a four-member vocal group. All sung in English with some exception partly sung in Portuguese too like `Haply-Hap'.

`A Saudade Mata a Gente' is a traditional Brazilian folk song with a Santos' sensational arrangement which gives way for brilliant solos by Pizzi and by trumpeter Steve Huffsteter.

You'll find top quality amusement in the exotic arrangements for instrumental lines in virtually all tracks but specially `A Saudade Mata a Gente', `The City of LA', `Suk-Cha', `Kathy', and `Amphibious',

Program ends with a beautiful song `What's My Name' with a different beat and with vocals by Mike Campbell and Moacir Santos.

All original compositions by Mr. Santos except `A Saudade Mata a Gente' (typed differently in the album cover with a wrong double `t').

A must-have.

First of all Melero is where Cerati first got interested in what now is his signature electronic / rock sound. This is a great album. There are some repeats of different versions, but a must have. * Marea De Venus rattles of Argentine girls' names and what really goes on at night, ** Quatro is a "techno "if you will song. Primitive due to the time period, but you could work out to it, and *** La Cuerda Planetaria has Melero singing. A must have if you are a true Cerati / Soda fan. Great guitar work and Cerati's voice is clear & strong. Think Amor Amarillo with beats & loops. The great thing about Cerati is he can work with different artists / genres and it's always a classic. This CD is one of the best cd's I recently have bought(Ricky,Enrique,Cristian etc). If you are in a romantic mood listen to tracks 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 9 10, if you want to get inspired, track 8. Javier has a beautiful voice that makes your skin tremble.

    I am a hard-core tango fan but have to say I find very little to like about this CD. I bought it on the strength of the line-up of musicians in El Quinteto Buenos Aires who are joined by the Royal Philatelic Orchestra conducted but the illustrious Ettore Stratta. With accomplished tango artists like Antonio Agri, Leopoldo Federico, Pablo Ziegler, Osvaldo Berlingieri and Hector Console at the nucleus, how could I go wrong? After all, Ziegler's Tango Romance with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra was a winner! Sadly, this isn't. The tango presented here is of the type one would expect to hear in an elevator. There is almost no passion and play is lackluster on nearly all cuts. The one exception is a fine rendition of the Ziegler composition Milonga En El Viento. They destroyed Cafetin de Buenos Aires! While this CD would be fine as background music in a corporate office, I can't see myself listening very often. Symphonic Tango may have the sound of tango, but it lacks the soul of tango.

    I love all the "Symphonic" series by Mr. Stratta who is ingenious in arranging music. I heard his music by some chance at a CD shop for the first time. The melody was so sweet and I asked a shopboy what the song was. The CD was "Symphonic Bolero" with nice cover art. Since then I've been a big fan of him. This CD is also one of my favorite. This always lets me be in a warm and happy mood. I'd like to recommend you to try his other albums. Good buy!

    There is a nice mix of old and new "standards." The accompanying booklet has a brief, but authoritative history of the tango and the composers and performers on the cd. It really makes you want to dance but listening is OK too. Energizing and inspirational in its lushness.

    When I first heard this piece, it reminded me of the soprano solo from "The Fifth Element." This CD spans quite a range of music, from beautiful laments for lost loved ones to almost annoying choruses harping about the darker side of death. Unlike most requiems, which are straight laments, this one is more of a commentary on death. This one gets better with each listen. I particularly recommend the second-to-last track, Agnus Purus -- what an incredible choral movement and key change at the end. I could easily see this as the foundation for a movie soundtrack, or a new TV drama.

    "Dreamer" is unquestionably the finest recording of original songs by black composers available today. The singing of tenor, Darryl Taylor is superb and demonstrates a vocal beauty, musicianship, and interpretive sensitivy that is rarely equaled. The selection of poems of poet laureate, Langston Hughes is first rate, and even more important, the songs themselves are original, varied and well written. I think every listener will find "Dreamer" an exciting musical experience, and I predict for Darry Taylor a distinguished career as an interpreter of art songs. For the Naxos price, buy two albums and give one to a friend!

    This collection is a gem! Langston Hughes was a very "musical" poet who was inspired by a variety of forms, from jazz to classical. His poetry in turn inspired a whole generation of composers, thirteen of whom are represented here in fifteen art songs. Additionally, eight Hughes poems are read by William Warfield.

      Salon music flourished in the 1920's and 30's, especially in the grand hotels. The repertoire of each ensemble was as varied as the patrons who frequented these fabled "palm courts." In an evening at the Ritz one was likely to hear music from Dvorak to Ravel, Lehar to Brahms or gypsy folksongs.

      This album tops the previous "Viveza, Music in the Palm Court Style". The groups' inventiveness really shines in this CD. From a marimba version of Piazzola's "Milonga del Angel" to an absolutely smashing version of Moritat (Mack the Knife from Threepenny Opera), the selections are superb. I highly recommend this one!

      We have entertained ourselves with the video Jeeves and Wooster for the past two years. Since my wife and I played in classical orchestras, we greatly enjoy the quality and "just right" musical pace of the CD for office internet work stimulation. Now we ordered another copy for home entertainment.

      If you have not heard the 4th symphony of Braga Santos, you have missed one of the great joys in life. From the heart-beating lament in the 2nd movement to the magnificent life-asserting finale, this music will truly embrace you.
      I will never understand the continuing neglect of this masterpiece,(and of this composer)especially with the increasing Latino population in the U.S. Is there not at least one prominent red-blooded conductor who could include this in a program? This music would bring the house down.

      Both pieces on this CD are absolutely terrific.

      Perhaps it is time to consider revising the Basic Repertoire. I know many people who love classical music, but when I mention Braga Santos to them, they think it is a kind of wine. Well, in a way it is...his music is utterly intoxicating. I can't get enough of it myself, and I feel that anyone who hears him will feel the same way.

      So glad to see great reviews on 2 of my all time favorite "unknown works" from Portugal. I have actually more to say about the Variations - about midway into this work begins a beguiling rhapsodic melody that is quite unlike anything else. Listen for musical description of crickets on the hot plains of Portugal at the end. Nice to see these works played so well also. The variations are also on an rare old recording by a Portuguese orchestra transfered to CD years ago, also a classic if you can find it.

      I have little to add to the other estimable reviews printed here other than to say that, as an aficionado of minor composers and out-of-the-way repertoire, I have listened to hundreds of symphonies and other orchestral works from leading but often completely neglected composers of many nations, and have never heard a series of symphonies more impressive than those of Joly Braga Santos. How many so-called 'minor' symphonies have provided pleasure by virtue of their skillful orchestration, their clever handling of thematic development, or their inventive architecture....while failing to imprint upon the musical memory any melodies of distinction or, even less, of simply any resonance. Yet here, in the 4th symphony of Mr. Braga Santos, we have all of the characteristic virtues of masterful composition along with the very rare facet of memorable melodies. Melodies, in fact, that contain the essence of beauty and power that typifies the highest artistic achievements. Everyone who loves music should buy this disc. Every music director should consider programming this or other works of this composer. If music like this were programmed more often audiences would appreciate classical music more so than they do in this time in which programming relies too often on a formula of juxtaposing the same old orchestral repertoire with modern works that usually sacrifice melody and shape for sound effects and architectural ingenuity. To the Andrew Littons of the world.....please champion this music!

      What a magnificant symphony. It is simply stunning! And the "Hymn to Youth" of the last movement is beyond belief. Get this one. You'll play it again and again.
