Que Viva Zarzuela!!.......2006-11-10
Zarzuela is Spanish operetta. This is a fine collection of choruses and preludes from various famous Zarzuelas, particularly for a beginner in the genre. If however you have been "enrollado" in Zarzuela for a while it's a lot like popular classics or "Opera Goes to the Movies" It'll be stuff you've heard before. Maestro Roa knows how to conduct with finess and fire, whichever is required and the performances are easy to appreciate and very easy to understand the lyrics if you speak Spanish. I highly reccommend this disc to anyone who wants to take away the veil of mystery surrounding Zarzuela and start exploring on your own. This disc is an excellent place to begin!
Preludes & Choruses From Zarzuelas.......2006-07-17
Preludes & Choruses From Zarzuelas~ Miguel Roa was something quite new to me. Having mostly listened to classical from France, Germany, Austria, Russia and Italy I had not listened much to Spanish composers. The end result is that the music is very easy to listen to but feels light and I feel that it sounds a bit to much like movie soundtrack music. The book-let is quite well done and the painting on the front is splendid. The liner notes and the essay inside are well done and it is not overlong or too verbose. I must say that I had never ever heard of any of these composers before and it was a with an adventurous spirit that I started listening to this recording and to my pleasant surprise it was quite good and I therefore give it 4 out 5 stars.

The Dance of the Lovers is Here!.......2003-09-07
For many years an ancient 78 of one of the items found on this welcome CD was the most requested item for playing on the national radio broadcaster in Australia. Requests for full details of the item always yielded an announcement that everything on the record label was printed in Spanish, that there was not much of it, and all that could be deciphered and translated approximated to "The Dance of the Lovers".
Well, the same item features on Track 13 of this CD in a digitally recorded 1999 Madrid recording, and full information is provided about it and the other zarzuela excerpts in notes by Manuel Garcia Franco. This once popular item on Australian airwaves is a simple verse and chorus, the first in the minor and the second in the major mode. Framed in a short introduction and coda, it is sung twice, and what the female chorus members sing the first time is sung by the male chorus members the second time, and vice versa.
Although the Spanish composers of the zarzuela excerpts included here are represented in my collections by solo items from singers such as Supervia and de los Angeles, the choruses and orchestral excerpts found on this CD are all new to my ears. I have never seen a zarzuela and, welcoming and recommending this collection of samples, would like to read reviews or communications from others with better information.
¡Olé!.......2003-02-26
I know almost nothing about zarzuelas, other than that they're Spanish light operas, immensely popular in Spanish-speaking areas and virtually unknown everywhere else. Why they didn't travel and Viennese operetta did, I'll never know; they're a heckuva lot more exciting!
If this disc is any indication, the music, the rhythm, the overall feeling of zarzuela music is infectious. I put this CD on and then couldn't stop listening to it. According to the liner notes, these orchestral selections and choruses are among the best-known from this genre. I can see why they're popular. The playing and singing of the Comunidad de Madrid Orchestra and Chorus are exemplary.
Now please excuse me, while I go sign up for castanet lessons.

LAGQ Guitar Heroes by the LAGQ.......2005-03-24
This was the Grammy award winner in classical crossover for 2005. It is great if you appreciate the innovators in 20th century guitar music. Listen to The "Assad Duo" and a rock remedition of a Michael Hedges tribute" Lament and Wake which stand out. Both these songs got great reviews as arrangements by the newspaper critics. Get the multi channel version if you have a a top notch audio system with the speakers to show off the enginneering. If you just want "pretty" background music this is not an album for you.
A Guitar Grimoire for 6 string enthusiasts.......2004-08-14
This is an exciting display of 6 string prowess that really isn't classical, yet will inevitably become a classic. It is an amazing tour de force worthy of the California Guitar Trio. The efforst here focus on composers and players who are heroes to this quartet, and it is a compendium of the best: McLaughlin, Hendrix, Metheny, Towner, Howe, Rheinhart. Each and every selection is brilliant whether they are essaying Norman Blake or Frank Zappa. York, Tennant, Kanengiser and Dearman command their instruments with power and discipline, and the finessse and passion leaps off the strings. The fretwork is a tribute to each of the heroes honored, and indeed this is truly an honouring of great fretmen. The digital encoding of the disc is such that you get a very precise definition of who is playing spacially from right to left. Very impressive, as you would expect from Telarc.
Their take on Towner's "Icarus" is both timely and quite a creative adjustment of the tempo. Steve Howe's "Mood For A Day" undergoes a makeover as a flamenco tour de force, and it actually comes off even more amazing than Howe's various re-workings of this abstemious wonder. At times, the compositions are those of the heroes, at others it is the LAGQ's composition evoking essential qualities of the personalities honoured. It works beautifully on all accounts. If you are a fan of acoustic guitars, or even of any of the guitarists honoured here, you owe it to yourself to pick this up.

Pifarro's Best Album!.......2003-07-08
Although Pifarro has released some wonderful stuff in the past couple of years, "Los Ministriles" is still, in my opinion, their best offering to date. Simply, this recording is a delight, and although I've heard it dozens of times, it always remains fresh and enjoyable upon each re-aquaintance. There is something about music from the Spanish renaissance that sets it apart from almost anything being written in Europe at the time, and Pifarro captures the fun, spontanaity and pure beauty that this music exudes from note one. Highly recommended.
Fun, syncopated music from Piffaro, the Renaissance Band........2002-11-25
The full title of this album is "Los Ministriles: Spanish Renaissance Wind Music", and it features a wide variety of genteel and folksy tunes that would have been played by multi-instrumentalist minstrels employed by the nobles and clergy of the time. Originally founded in 1980 as the Philadelphia Renaissance Wind Band, Piffaro took its current name from the Italian version of "Pfeifer", or piper. And indeed, this group boasts a wide variety of wind instruments: entire families of shawms, recorders and crumhorns; along with sackbuts, a bass dulcian and various bagpipes; accompanied by Spanish essentials such as harp, vihuela, guitar and percussion. The lively and intricate syncopation of Renaissance Spanish compositions lends a distinctive character to this CD in comparison with the group's other releases, which are also very good. Try their Flemish and German recordings too--"A Flemish Feast: Flemish Renaissance Wind Music" and "Stadtpfeiffer: Music of Renaissance Germany".
Renaissance Music is Anything but Boring!.......2000-03-20
I will admit an immediate bias for this recording, as my Renaissance Music instructor's husband is one of the players. However, leaving that fact out entirely, this disc, like all of Piffaro's recordings, is a joy. I listen to them everywhere, especially when I need to stay awake on long drives. To hear such difficult ensemble instruments as shawms, krumhorns and recorders in a resonant environment, played perfectly in tune is rare. This particular disc ranges from organ-like works for recorder consort to rousing dances like ¡Si abrá in este baldres! Unlike CDs that contain lengthy masses with no lighter interludes (although these are equally gorgeous, especially the Gabrielli Consort's Moralès Mass for the Feast of St. Isidore), Piffaro's CDs are widely varied in terms of instrumentation, style, tempo and inflection. I have played this for many people who claim to not like early music and have had much favorable response, not to mention the personal enjoyment and sheer fun!
Fun music.......1998-11-21
Much of this CD is typical Renaissance music with period instruments: a delight to listen to, but sounding a lot like other Renaissance delights. What I found really unique is that this is the first selection of Renaissance music which I'm familiar with that includes bagpipes among the instuments. Crumhorns and sackbuts are nice but familiar; the bagpipe selections blew me away.

These guys are amazing. This CD is for everyone, regardless of "favorite" musical tastes. Classical, pop, new-age, country, whatever: the LAGQ's virtuosity is stunning, and the sounds they make are engaging, clear and clean (and aided by recording engineers who should win the Nobel Prize for recording, were there such a thing). Nominally, this CD is inspired by the heroes of the four members of LAGQ, but that's only a piece of information: What they do with music by, or indebted to, or inspired by their "heroes" is the issue, and it's never less than original, by turns lovely (the Pat Metheny piece), reckless and innovatively busy (Jimi Hendrix's "Pluck, Strum and Hammer"---with gorgeous harmonics), flamenco (Steve Howe's "Aire para un dia," totally re-conceived), and kitchen-sink (Frank Zappa's "Let's be Frank"). Even the infuriating John McLaughlin is well represented. The recording is vivid and the artists are identified from left to right, speaker-wise. And the Chet Atkins piece that closes the CD is nothing short of delicious. What is this uncategorizable CD? A joy---that's what. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
An Outstanding Hommage to the Greats of All-Styles of Guitar.......2006-06-25
It goes without saying the the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet is in fact the BEST performing guitar ensemble in the world right now. The quartet always impresses me with their variety, technique, musicianship, ensemble playing and innovation. The playing and material on this album reflects just that. The variety reflects many different styles: contemporary classical, rock, jazz, avant garde, new age, bluegrass, country and flamenco. The technique is spotless, the musicianship is incredibly fine tuned the group plays together perfectly and the selections are fresh, new and very interesting. It's a true treat to hear nylon stringed classical guitars playing tribute to their greats and the greats of their electric counterparts.
To talk about highlight tracks on this album just wouldn't be fair. There are too many. The cover of Ralph Towner's "Icarus" is exciting in its use of special guitar techniques, its Brazillian flavor and Andrew Yorks amazing improvised solo. The bouncy tribute to Norman Blake and David Bromberg is fun and incredibly enerjetic. The hommages to McLaughlin and Hendrix are provocative, strange and haunting. Following those two abrasive, dissonant cuts is a beautiful transcription of Pat Metheny's Letter from Home and Sergio Assad's very cool composition "Uarekena." The disc also features a flamenco reworking of Yes's "Mood for a Day," a tribute to gypsy great Django Reinhard, a Romeros quartet piece bubbling with Spanish flair, the extended technique ridden Michael Hedges tribute, an avant garde nod to Frank Zappa and a bouncy country influenced salute to Chet Atkins. Every cut is strong and is oozing with LAGQ perfection and nuance.
The other cool thing about this album is that it is mixed in stereo. The players are mixed across the speakers so that the arrangements can be aurally analyzed much easier. This album is a must have for any fan of the guitar... not just classical players.
LAGQ: "Decent".......2006-02-21
Bought this album because I thought the last tune on it was very catchy. The rest of the album didn't seem so great, possibly because my girlfriend wouldn't shut up and listen to it. I am going to listen to it some more without her. It is all instrumental, all guitar, and just not bad.
Fails to translate into much pleasure for average listeners .......2006-01-31
LAGQ's CD "Guitar Heroes" begins with their take on Ralph Towner's classic Icarus. This choice proves an apt one, for like this mythical Greek hero, LAGQ strives to accomplish something great and wonderful, but instead crashes to earth.
In fact, the CD begins with much promise, leading with the soaring cover of Icarus and the well-done homage to Blake and Bromberg "B&B." Then the McLaughlin and Hendrix tributes founder badly before the band achieves stability with a pair of unexciting but listenable tunes in honor of Pat Metheney and the Assad Duo (I always thought it was the other way around, Duo Assad).
A rather horrid homage to Steve Howe and a lackluster one for Django Reinhardt are countered by the brief but clever Duane York, a nice yoking together of slide and classical styles. The tip of the cap to Los Romeros is OK, but then the overlong, often irritating tributes to Michael Hedges and Frank Zappa do not add any luster to either of these late guitarists' legacies and set the CD on a terminal downward spiral.
The nice tribute to Chet Atkins that concludes this set is not enough to restore altitude and the whole effort essential crashes to earth.
No doubt the performers had a great time recording this CD for their grasp of technique and nuance proves solid. The problem is that the concept of "Guitar Heroes" fails to translate into much pleasure for average listeners like me.
I Should Have Known Better.......2005-04-05
I'm a fan of Classical Guitar. I heard about this quartet and sought them out, buying "Guitar Heroes". I should have read the Amazon review more closely. If I had I would have earned these pieces are in a dissonant rock-style with little or no melodic form. A far cry from what I envisioned. I write this to warn other innocents who might be looking for melodic music in a classical style. I didn't read the review closely enough, but you should.
Totally satisfying.......2004-12-12
I can't think of any recent collection of music that I enjoyed more than this album by the LAGQ. "Guitar Heroes" is amazing right from the beginning and never ceases right through the last track. The performances are solid, always musical and often mesmerizing. The songs and arrangements are impeccable and thoughtful, never pandering or taking the easy route to illuminating a particular guitar hero. After listening to this album, you want to hear more of the LAGQ, and also more from their "heroes". For that alone, this offering is a tremendous success.

This Atlanta-based quartet oozes enthusiasm and energy in serving up an infectious blend of rockabilly and swing. In the process, the Cigar Store Indians prove that melody and aggression can happily coexist. While the rhythm section roars and rumbles, Ben Friedman earnestly delivers his vocals over Jim Lavender's formidable electric twang and tinges of steel guitar, piano, and horns. The music ranges from cactus-and-armadillo-skull dirges to unassuming ballads to high-octane romps. Above all, the Indians make time-tested musical styles sound fresh and exciting; they're danceable and catchy without being shallow. --Marc Greilsamer

The men can make music.......2005-05-18
I saw this group as the opening act for the Squirel Nut Zippers and was I impressed. You can help but move and dance to the sound. Great lead guiter by Jim Lavender. I have all their CD's and hope to get the new one, Built of Stone this weekend. They are probably one of the hardest working bands.
An incredible band.......2005-05-07
About 10 years ago a friend and I went down to hilton head island to celebrate his 21st birthday. So as you can imagine...many bars were closed by us. Anyway, we stumbled into a hotel bar one night as we had heard, from the street mind you, an incredible sound coming from this place. When we walked in their was a barmaid, and one other customer in the place...practically empty. Except for this band on stage and playing away as if there was a full house. We sat down and ordered our drinks and listened to these fellas play ALL NIGHT! They were amazing! When they FINALLY put their instruments down we bought a round of drinks for them. We sat and talked about the plans for the big time. I told them if and when they put an album out I'd be first in line. But as you can guess...time slipped away and I lost track of these talented guys. But what a surprise! I've found them again AND they have two albums out!! So without even listening to the tracks...I've purchased both...so should you.
Genuine guys, great music, unique CD for your collection........2004-12-27
As a music reviewer for a magazine, it has been my distinct pleasure to meet Ben and the boys on more than one occasion. I have been to see them pretty much every time they make it to my area, and I will see them again, on Jan. 7th (in the Northern VA area). They are the most genuine group of guys you'd ever want to meet, and this is a quality that shines through in their recorded music. If you ever get the chance to see them live, walk up and chat. You'll be amazed at the warmth of character that radiates from these gents.
On to the CD:
This CD is a must-have, and worth every penny if you like country, Rockabilly, roots, Americana, or just good-guys.
I must recommend, however, that if you've never heard CSI (Cigar Store Indians), that you get the self-titled CD before you listen to this one, in order to gain more insight into CSI. My personal preference is for the more rootsy sound, which can be heard on several, but not all, of the tracks on this CD.
great album.......2003-04-04
These guys are great. I never have gotten to see them live but I would in a heartbeat. I could listen to my cd over and over and not get tired of them. I am going to buy thier new cd now.
El Baile De La Cobra.......2001-10-03
Wow!!!!! These guys are great. This is not a bunch of commercial junk, this is Rock-a-Billy at it's best. I have not played a CD over and over like this in years. I just don't get tired of these guys. In fact I just ordered The Cigar Store Indian's first CD and I understand that they have a new live release coming out soon (10-12-01 I think)and I plan on getting that one as well.
These guys put on one of the best, fun-filled shows that you will ever see and I strongly recomend that the next time these guys come to town that you check them out. They have fun and it shows, whether you see them live or listen to one of their recordings.

Needs advisory label "Do not take seriously".......2007-01-16
What's not to love about this album? When I first saw this album with its cheery pink cover&colorful musicians,I thought,"Looks great!" It would be a long time before I got it.
"El Baile Aleman" is a hilarious, campy lounge album perfect for relaxing,writing--or on gloomy days. The opening "Showroom Dummies" is a funny version;I assume it's superior to Kraftwerk's original. It's a joyous cha-cha-cha.It even made its way onto the soundtrack of "Y Tu Mama Tambien." "Trans Europe Express" sounds like a cheery jingle from the '60s--or something from "The Incredibles." "Homecomputer" is a homage to the personal computer, back when it was the new thing--recast as a frothy merengue."Autobahn" is a rollicking cumbia merengue. The closing song,"Music Non Stop" is a cumbia that makes you wish the album were longer (it clocks in at less than an hour)
"El Baile Aleman" is perfect lounge music. It needs the advisory label-do not take seriously--it's meant to be fun!
Senor Coconut... the best... and it's from my country!.......2003-02-13
[...]i'm from chile and since a couple of month i had never heard about Uwe Schmidt (Senor Coconut). I started listening to him and then someone told me that he lived in Santiago, Chile. I bought the record inmediatly (i'm a big Kraftwerk fan). The cd is awesome. Here in chile we do not listen to salsa or rumba or cha cha cha.. that's in the center of america. Here people listen other stuff. This guy is a german person, he married a chilean woman and came to live here. this is a pretty famous guy, but nobody knows him here. it's funny. he started to make this kraftwerk covers, and made an imaginary band "Senor Coconut y su Conjunto". This "conjunto" do not exist. this is only Uwe Schmidt making music here in chile.... well i hope now you know a little bit more about Senor Coconut... [...]!
JUST EXCELLENT..........2003-02-07
Fantastic homage to Kraftwerk by Senor Coconut Y Su Conjunto. Wonderful blend of Latin rythym and electronic music that puts me in a trance. It can be played loud or soft and still work. My favorite picks are "Showroom Dummies" and "Neon Lights". I just love it and will keep an eye on this talented group. Highly recommended. Very highly.
Cool.......2002-10-26
This album is just so cool. I heard this for the first time in my favourite bar where my favourite girl-dj used to play some soft, lounge and just cool music two years ago. She was so sweet and whatever she played it sounded like honey.. erm however..
Tonight I took up this cd and played it again.
To make a long review short. I that know telling you this is an awesome album won't help you at all to get the idea about what this album is like.
However if you read this you're propably a listener with good taste whether it's kraftwerk or salsamusic you like.
Simply put, Senor Coconut's makes some awesome covers of the most famous Kraftwerks titles in a salsa/rumba/samba/whateveritscalledmusic/style.
Kraftwerk is a pioneer group that never goes out of style whatever happens to the musical "trend" and Senor Coconut'just makes something new with a material that's timeless.
The result is both intresting and a pleasure to listen too.
Though it's strongly recommended to be a Kraftwerk fan to appreciate this cd.
Rhomboid, Rhineland Rhumbas.......2002-05-03
Like Moby's Play, this obscure gem is destined to work it's way into the mainstream. The inclusion of Showroom Dummies on the Y Tu Mama Tambien soundtrack has hooked in the loft dwelling, taste makers of Tribeca. Next stop, Volkswagon commercials? Maybe the new Mini.
Get this wonderful reinterpretation of Kraftwerk's music and join in the conga line.
