5 out of 5 stars el jefe de jefes.......2006-01-02

This man was and is simply true genius. His songs evoke such emotion and inspiration, that the simple thought of his lyrics wiil leave your toungue tasting like agave. Yes this man based his music on tequila women and real life stories. I have had the pleasure to listen to this one of a king composer and singer since childhood. My mom tells me stories of she as a child, personally being able to witness one of his concerts in
Tijuana Mexico. To any person who is just starting to listen to this man, hold on to your seat, because he will take you on a spiritual and emotional journey through the heart and soul of Mexico.!!!!

5 out of 5 stars I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of Vol. I & II.......2004-04-26

If you are new to Mexican music you should definitely get to know Jose Alfredo Jimenez. They do not make singers and composers like Jose Alfredo anymore. The sentiments that Jose Alfredo emotes in his music transcend race and gender. I often hear other musicians play some of his songs in restaurants or parties, but it is never the same. If you've listened to the original renditions by Jose Alfredo, you know what I mean. Too bad he left us too soon.

5 out of 5 stars Aun despues de muerto, seguira siendo el Rey...........2003-11-23

5 out of 5 stars "Que te vaya bonito".......2001-06-30

You need Jose Alfredo in your collection get this one and volume 2.

5 out of 5 stars Now and forever El Rey.......2001-08-10

This CD, coupled with Vol.11, makes for the most volume of work ever assembled of the late great composer and singer, Jose Alfredo. This volume, like vol.11 has 50 songs, so if you buy both CD's you get "Las 100 Clasicas." There are many compilations of "greatest hits" but this is without a doubt the best. It has all the familar fare plus alot of rare and more obscure recordings that are lesser known. Some of these gems were previously only on vinyl. What you get here is a variety of rancheras filled with Jose Alfredo's favorite subjects. A tormented soul, Jose Alfredo sings often of loves both lost and won. His songs are autobiographical in nature as he inevitably numbs his pain, both in song and life as he celebrates his victory with "otro tequila" or as he often invokes,"otro vaso de vino." The themes Jose Alfredo writes about include all the usual suspects. The characters are all here, the coward, the brave soul, the bartender and his clients, the chaos that often results, gunfights and fistfights, the women in all forms, wives and lovers, unappreciative, bandidas, lovely and kind, beautiful and senuous, he loved them all, both in real life and in song, querido Mexico with all it's beautiful places, including Mazatlan, Jalisco and Guanajuato to name a few, dogs and their owners, horses and their riders, money and all it's pitfalls, poverty and it's tragedies, sadness and happiness, luck and fate in life and death, God and La Virgen, boxers and other machos, in short if it existed in Jose Alfredo's life he wrote about it. Make no doubt though, his favorite themes were love, women and drinking, no wonder I love this guy! Someone like Jose Alfredo only passes briefly through this cosmos, like a shooting star he was brilliant but short lived. That he was able to create such voluminous work in his 47 years is mind boggling. This volume covers songs from his most active decade, the 60's, with the exception of a few classics from 1972. The mariachi is the world renowned Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, often arranged and directed by the the brilliant Ruben Fuentes. There are so many great songs that it is hard to pick favorites but suffice to say that when Jose Alferdo's disc is playing the "next" button is never touched, I want the full experience. If you are like me, one can never get enough Jose Alfredo so this is perfect, to have 50 songs on one CD(2 discs) is nirvana. If you have alot of these songs already, like I do, don't worry, there are enough "unknown" gems here to make it worth it. Besides it is good to have one in the car and wherever else one stores their favorite CD's. If you are new to Jose Alfredo welcome and enjoy this great CD, if you're an old fan, enjoy revisiting the master. Jose Alfredo sigue siendo El Rey, for all times. Buy this CD for an awesome, historical musical experience to be lived over and over. "El disco es cultura."

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential.......2005-05-03

Its futile to argue about the merits of the music, its undeniable. The only thing I can add is that this particular compilation was materfully remastered especially in comparison to the 100 Canciones series which sounds hollow, distant & unbalanced.

5 out of 5 stars 2 Exceptions to Rico's Comments.......2001-12-16

In "La Enorme Distancia", the distance referred to is not pysical or geographical, it is EMOTIONAL-in "No Me Amenazes", the singer is NOT begging his lover to leave, but for her to STOP THREATENING to leave him-as the title says, for he cannot stand the emotional uncertainty anymore. Otherwise, I enjoyed your review.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best collections.......2001-01-28

Add a star to the rating on this collection of "greatest hits." Probably every one of El Rey's most popular recordings on one double disc. This is the quintessential CD for lovers of ranchera music penned and performed by El Rey. Although I own most of these recordings in original vynyl it is handy to have them on CD. All the songs are written by El Rey and performed with the godfather of all Mariachi's, El Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan with arrangements and direction by el maestro Ruben Fuentes. There are classic songs of love like "Ameneci en tus brazos,""Un mundo raro,""Cuando vives con migo," and his great tribute song "Paloma querida." There are songs of many loves like "El siete mares" where he sings of having a woman in every port, of heartbreak as in "La Enorma Distancia" where he longs for his lover who is miles away and "No me amenaces," where he practically cries telling his lover to leave "pero no se ha ido." There are various Serenatas and songs that are about the pride of being Mexican but they have an appeal that is universal. Some songs may be considered by some to be "tears in your beer" music but El Rey has a way of making even the saddest of stories uplifting, it appeals to the macho in all males. Not one loser here just winners. My only complaint is that "El 15 de Septiembre" is missing. Also missing is the heartfelt "Gracias," his tribute song to all his fans, if you've never heard it you're missing something. He's written so many songs though that it is understandable. This is a superb disc that will get countless play from ranchera lovers. The accompanying booklet is brief but informative. Ranchera music never gets old and although Jose Alfredo Jimenez has long ago passed through this world his legacy lives on for new generations to discover and those familiar to savor. Fittingly enough the CD ends with "El Rey", Jose Alfredo Jimenez "sige siendo el rey."

5 out of 5 stars "El Padrino" of Mexican Music.......2001-01-25

Jose Alfredo Jimenez was the best all time composer of this type of music. All his songs contained in this collection have been sung by many different artist everywhere. Although he is no longer with us, his songs will always remain in our hearts. One of the best collection yet. I have all these already and really enjoyed them. They're sung from the heart!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums I've ever listened to.......2000-05-17

I've never heard anyone's songs touch the heart like do Jose Alfredo's. This album has 33 of his greatest songs, an amazing bargain for the price offered.

This is Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez's first non-classical CD. He brings to the popular music of Latin America and Spain the same scrupulous musicianship, bright tone, and charm with which he approaches Donizetti and Rossini. Some of these songs are accompanied by full orchestra and some (such as "Ella" and "Mexico lindo y querido," for example) are with a shiny mariachi band, while a couple ("Fina stampa," "Bello Durmiente") have solo guitar as their backup. Florez has plenty of opportunity to show off his high notes--there are brilliant high Cs here and there--and his perfect vocal placement and portamento are most welcome. "Jurame," a sensual tango, is a fine example. While he can sing softly at times, Florez doesn't do quite enough with dynamics. A bit more variation would have been welcome, but he's very much in the spirit of this music. His "Granada" is stunning, and he gets the idiom of the "lounge music" numbers as well. His fans, and fans of music with this Latino tinge, will not be disappointed. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Done.......2006-06-05

I bought this CD on a whim while on a road trip this weekend and boy wasn't it a pleasant surprise. Juan Diego Florez brings an elegance and beauty of timbre that I have not really heard in this genre. His phrasing is impeccable and he avoids the histrionics that most tenor CD's of this type are littered with. Technically, he has always been a marvel, but this CD seems to have more heart, soul and an excellent sense of timing than any of his prior CD's (and I'm a Rossini and bel canto nut).Hope he makes more like this! Bravo!

4 out of 5 stars Unexpected and Old-Fashioned Latin Pop with a Gifted Florez in His Element.......2006-05-24

This is a splendid recording that represents blessed synchronicity between voice and material. The singer is Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez, and the repertoire here consists of popular early-to-mid-20th century Latin American and Spanish songs. Barely in his thirties, he produces a sweet, warm sound that combines effortlessly with a youthful vigor. Florez can also conquer impressive coloratura passages with superb breath control. All these attributes have served him well in bel canto roles, and now he uses the same technique in these romantic ballads and ranchero songs.

Pedro Elias Gutierrez's "Alma llanera" opens the disc with a flavorful, syncopated arrangement that would not sound out of place at the Tropicana nightclub in Havana, while the melancholy mariachi-style horns of Jose Alfredo Jimenez's "Ella" provides a nice Mexican atmosphere. There is a trio of songs by Maria Isabel Granda Larco from his native Peru all arranged impeccably by the singer himself - the openly romantic "La flor de la canela", the more somber "Bello durmiente" and best of all, the intimate-sounding "Fina estampa" with impressive fretwork by David Galvez. Florez dares to tackle the warhorses that are Agustin Lara's "Granada" and Ernesto Lecouna's "Siboney", and while he puts out the necessary stops, the songs are a bit too familiar to have full dramatic impact. The arrangement on "Siboney" especially gets a bit too bombastic with syrupy strings and pounding jungle drums.

Better are the decidedly old-fashioned "Princesita" with Daniel Binelli's tango-infused bandoneon (an accordion-like instrument) and Maria Grever's "Jurame", which sounds almost like a Mario Lanza operetta-style number from an MGM musical. My personal favorites come near the end of the recording - the tropically tinged ballad, Nilo Menendez and Adolfo Utrera's "Acquellos ojos verdes" and Chuco Monge's "Mexico lindo" with its dramatic tempo changes. With his stunning voice, Florez has such an affinity for this music that it is easy to overlook some of the overdone arrangements. This is a solid example of how a crossover recording can be done with the right blend of talent and music regardless of what genre we expect from a prodigious singer.

3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.......2006-05-22

I read the reviews on your site and hearing this album was just a bit disappointing. I exected much more. His rendition of this type of song doesn't hold a candle to Domingo's. Many of the songs seems lifeless and rather amateurish. He should stick to what he does best and leave stuff like this to Domingo. He is however much better than other opera singers who try to sing this repetoire.

5 out of 5 stars EXQUISITE.......2006-05-05

This recording is wonderfully exquisite. As an opera singer, I have sung these songs in recitals many times and listening to Juan has been like a master class. His technique is superb. His "En mi viejo San Juan" brought me great memories and got my eyes wet. This tenor has brought so much hope to belcanto and fine singing. Thank you very much, Juan. Best wishes and thousands of blessings.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2006-04-04

What a great album! Yes, this is how you do crossover!
This collection blows any other tenor's effort out of the water. I did not think that fully fledged operatic tenor could sing such swinging Latin music and sound so good. Domingo and his often tacky Broadway collections, and Carreras misguided attempts, it's all forgotten now. Florez is the new Mambo King.
I love all the songs, what incredible finds they are. There is only one rehashed song, the famous Granada, but Florez version is fantastic. I have to admit I do not love all of his opera singing, his quick vibratto works only intermittedly, and certainly he is very good in Rossini, but his Verdi is disappointing... not that it matters on this album. I did not know he started singing in the popular music field, but it certainly shows. Muchas gracias, Sr Florez for this fabulous gift, this Sentimiento Latino. Very cool and highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars TRIBUTO AL DESASTRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-02-25

4 out of 5 stars Not complete - it originally has 20 songs.......2004-02-19

I was actually desapointed that the US version of this album did not include all 20 songs that originally has in the Mexican and Latin American version.
To me the most impressive version of a Jose Alfredo Jimenezsong has been made by Enrique Bunbury. He has performed this song since 1997 and has closed most of his concerts with it. It has now become a clasic of his shows. The live version included originally in the mexican version of this album is the best of all 20 songs.
Other than that, this album is great. All the musicians did a great job bringing back to life the songs of this great writer.

5 out of 5 stars Plenty of Bang for Your Buck!.......2003-11-30

I was absolutly blown away by Aterciopelados beautiful rendition of one of my favirote Jose Alfredo Jimenez tunes, "Que Te Vaya Bonito". It brings a whole other dimension to the song. Fantastic.

Another knockout is "Serenata a la luna" done to perfection by Julieta Venegas. It makes me itch even more to hear her new album. Other notables include El Tri, Saul Hernandez, Ana Belen and King Chango. This album I believe is important, as it reintroduces the young generations to Jose Alfredo, who was the greatest composer of all time in my book. I hope that this will prompt young ones to seek out their grandparents records, and acquiant themselves with the one who helped shape Latin music as we know it today, perhaps more than anyone else.

5 out of 5 stars El Rey rocks on.......2003-09-04

It is unfortunate that so little information is provided about this super collection of songs . First of all the disc features many of the heavies and up and comers of RocnEspanol that give a modern twist to the magical lyrics of Jose Alfredo Jimenez. Featured artists include Saul Hernandez, Elefante, Aterciopelados, Julieta Venegas, El Tri, Rabanes, Jumbo, Joaquin Sabina, Miguel Mateos, Moenia and Mana just to name a few as there are seven more interpreters I didn't mention. None of the songs really sound like the originals by Jose Alfredo, also known as El Rey. Purists that are into Jose Alfredo might think this is wrong but believe me , from one Jose Alfredo fan to another, these songs rock and have much of the same emotion of the originals. Beginning with the first song, appropriately entitled "El Rey' by Moderatto, the tribute and homge begins to one of Mexico's greatest composers of popular ranchera music. Moderatto starts the disc with a Clash("Should I stay or Should I go") like beat and sound that suddenly changes rhythm and goes into an uptempo frenzied beat as the singer changes persona and does his best deep voiced(ahhh, thank you, thank you very much like) Elvis impersonation to set the tempo for El Rey songs like you've never heard them before. All of the songs rock, some have a gentle edge but all carry the impact and emotion of El Rey's lyrics, which unfortuantely, are not included. El Rey's music was often about love and the inevitable heartbreak and he seems to have had more than his share of both. A beautiful interpretaion of "Que Te Vaya Bonito" by Colombia's Aterciopelados features Andrea cutting straight to the heart. She sings, "Ojala que te vaya bonito, ojala que se acaben tus penas, que te digan que yo ya no existo, que conoscas personas mas buenas, que te den lo que no pude da te, aunque yo te alla dado de todo, nunca mas volvere a molestarte, te adore, te perdi, ya ni modo."( Lets hope that things are beautiful for you, let's hope that your troubles end, that they tell you I don't exist, that you meet better people, that they give you what I couldn't give you, although I gave you everything, never more will I return to bother you, I loved you, I lost you, now there's no way)." This is a loose translation but if you are a non-Spanish speaker you get the gist although it sounds better in Spanish. Another lyrical sample as Andrea continues in the same song " Cuantas luzes dejastes encendidas, yo no se como voy a apagar las,"(How many lights did you leave lit, I don't know how I will turn them off). In this case the lights refer to unfinished business and matters of the heart as El Rey often used metaphors. El Rey had a way with words and these modern interpreters pay their dues to him by presenting his music to new generations of listeners some thirty years after his death. "Tu Recuerdo y Yo ' is a jamming song with a Latin-ska-reggae beat and a flavor that sounds similar to King Chango ragamuffin delivery ,with echoes and shadows of El Rey, sipping tequila in the corner of a bar because "me rompistes mi corazon(you broke my heart)." Along the same style of presentation is Rabanes singing "La Media Vuelta." Again, this is a song about what happens when people go their seprate ways as the wild Panamanians sing amidst blaring horns. It's a happy sad song. There are several curiosities on this disc, most notably that all the songs are El Rey numbers with the exception of three which are penned and performed by Saul Hernandez(Califanes/Jaguares), Reyli Barba(Elefante) and Alejandro Lara(El Tri). Somehow these songs fit right in so maybe they had El Rey in mind when writting them. Also there are some nice mixes of mariachi music mixed in to the RocnEspanol beats. There is also some rap that is outstanding. For the most part though it is straight ahead RocnEspanol. There is a rocking hybrid rap version of Camino de Guanajuato with El Rey's famous declaration"La vida no vale nada(Life is worthless). Mana's version of "Te Solte la Rienda" ( I let go of the reins) is taken from one of their live performances as they often include a medley of El Rey song's in their performances. It is an appropriate song to include in the tribute and is an accoustic number that is also lively. There is a haunting version of "Cuando Sale La Luna" by Jumbo that is a provocative and seductive electronic tinged song will make the hairs on your neck stand up. There are nineteen different artists featured on this disc that goes from soft ballads or boleros that sound close to the originals to jacked up numbers that would probably make El Rey sit upright and scratch his head from his bed after a long night of partying. The booklet is colorful with a bunch of psychedelic looking pictures of Jose Alfredo in swirls of neon colors and negative digital imagery. The center spread has El Rey sitting at a table with bottles labeled XXX(30 anniversary of his death) and a crowned halo surrounded by all the artists featured. Fittingly enough the song "El Rey" is also the closing song and peformed by Miguel Mateos. In this version, Mateos delivers a soulful song that has that finale of the show, slow swaying crowd beat that has a candle lit. This has been my summer 2003 disc that I play endlessly and if you like RocnEspanol, or more importantly, El Rey, you too will be playing it often. You will love this tribute disc that is a great collaboration under the executive production of Jose Alfredo Jiminez Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Songs of Passion.......2003-12-16

For about fifty cents each song you can have this dozen of Jose Alfredo Jimenez's most popular songs. The included tracks which are not given in the details here are as follows : 1. "La Del Rebozo Blanco" 2. "Vamos" 3.Viente Anos" 4."Viejos Amigos" 5. "Paloma Querida" 6. "Si Tu Tambien Te Vas" 7."Adios a Carrasco" 8.Cuando Lloran Los Hombres" 9."Tu Enamorado" 10. "Llegando a Ti" 11."Tu Partida" 12. "Noche Criolla." Undoubtedly if you are a collector of Jose Alfredo songs you will find several songs here not found on the various compilations. One such song is "Viente Anos" which is one of those rare gems not found elsewhere for whatever reason. Several other less popular but equally satisfying as their more well known counterparts are "Viejos Amigos," "Tu Partida," "Adios Carrasco" and "Noche Criolla".If you love the music of El Rey than this is a nice addition to your collection or a good place to start. An interesting aspect of this disc is that these are the original versions of the more popular releases that are on the compilations. Apparently on the compilations there has been some modifications made to the originals because they are definitely different. For one the originals are monaural but play with brilliant fidelity on a quality system. One suggestion offered to me was that possibly the tracks on the compilations were using "canned " or archived backup material and the voice layed on later or vice versa. In any case there is a noticeable difference. The differences aside, the songs featured on the original disc are the same in terms of excellent musicianship, with El Rey belting out his compositions as only he can and the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan showing why they are considered the best mariachi and setting the standard by which all others are measured. The voice of El Rey is young and vibrant with the years of hard living and the ravages of time have not yet done noticeable damage . His voice has more of the suttle nuances of Pedro Infante. This is El Rey in his embryonic stage where his distinct vocal stylings have not yet matured but are riping beautifully. It is worth noting these differences because many people are only familiar with the material offered on compilations. El Rey offers his familiar and unfamiliar including the beautiful love song to his wife "Paloma Querida" in which he immortalized her for future generations. A lesser known song, "Viejos Amigos" was written while visting Cuba and after an encounter with a shoe shine man, in which the Cuban figured out he was Mexican because Mexicans "sing" when they talk, he was inspired to to write the song in a garden in Havana. All in all this is a good collection of twelve original recordings of passion. This is another in a line of original recordings, at a bargain price with no frills but just great music. Recommended for fans of ranchera music and one of it's best proponents, the late great El Rey, Jose Alfredo Jimenez.

Miguel Aceves Mejia is certainly one of the best know and best loved singers of traditional Mexican songs. I think this is his best CD. The music is from the 50's or before - the instrumentals can break your heart.
