Customer Reviews:
Ever wondered what was before Bach, Lully, or Palestrina?.......2007-04-29
During the days of the Renaissance, the madrigal was one
of the most popular musical forms and outputs. The King's Singers, a modern-day all male vocal group, demonstrate the authentic sound of which these 34 chosen madrigals may have been performed. In the Renaissance, in place of sopranos and altos, there were countertenors (men who sang falsetto in a feminine range). That's what these guys do; just listen to the first few and you'll automatically be transported back to this magical and sort of other-worldly time. If you've been to Renaissance fairs, it will make you think of those, too.
The King's Singers offer 34 well-chosen madrigals from composers like John Dowland, Hans Leo Hassler, Clement Jannequin and some composers who wished to remain anonymous. They are grouped by the different languages to show that the madrigal wasn't just the rage in Italy where it had originated but at various other places all over Europe, the hub of the music world. The Italian ones come first, then in English, French, Spanish and German. The best one in the set is "La Guerre" which runs 6 minutes, and is an incredible vocal showpiece. It's even very funny at times.
If you want to hear exactly how Renaissance madrigals sound, this is the real deal.

I bought this album a few years ago and to this day I still play this reord at least once or twice a week. This is the record that makes me wanna drive a hearse to some local chicken shack or beer soaked tavern on a dusty deserted road pop a few quarters in a juke box and start a fight. Customer Reviews:
Go, do the MOJO!.......2004-10-22
Do the Mojo! Meaning, buy this 5,6,7,8's CD and rock out to it. "Teenage Mojo Workout" is divided almost equally between cover songs and originals. It's nostalgic enough for many a retro rock fiend yet cool enough for the youthly crowd.
Musicians just don't tell us to "do the go-go" or sing songs titled "Hanky Panky" any more and that's where this hard-rockin' girl-trio from Japan comes in. Word has it that the band's name originates from the notion that the fifties was Elvis, the sixties was surf, the seventies was punk, and the eighties was the 5,6,7,8's. "Mojo" has the potential to soothe the savage rockabilly junkie and even the odd honky-tonk fan with it's wailing pop of yore guitar licks, groovy hip-shaking basslines and jump-uppity drumming.
Cover tracks on the CD include "I'm Blue" originally by Ike and Tina Turner's The Ikettes and "Harlem Shuffle" by Bob and Earl (also covered by the Rolling Stones).
The vocals are largely in Engrish, so listeners lacking patience and a sense of humor may feel flummoxed and frustrated with much of the singing. For example, the "Harlem Shuffle" lyric "you slide into the limbo/Yeah, how low can you go" sounds more like "soar into the rainbow/Woo, harm an eagle".
Only Japanese speakers will have the slightest clue what vocalist/guitarist Ronnie Yoshiko Fujiyama is singing about on "New Orleans Rock," but the jazzy piano can be a welcome addition to the album's line-up, especially as part of the final track. No foreign language or Engrish-comprehension skills are required to understand the the instrumentals "Road Runner," "Typhoon Girl" and "Green Onions". Knock yourself out.
If the album is a "Workout," then "In the Subway" is the cooldown. The title track features a wild tambourine while "In the Subway" has soft-rippling timpanies. Ronnie's voice sounds sultry and soothing on "Subway" whereas she usually sings with a scratchy shout.
The liner notes are mostly in Japanese, but the b&w studio photo of Ronnie on the back cover defies language.
This CD is not recommended for everyone, but if you came to look for it here, then you probably want it and you should probably get it.
Rock'n'Roll machine........2004-08-05
This album isn't for everyone, but it's still a great album.
If you're a fan of dirty punk music, e.g. the Dead Boys, Fear, the Ramones, the Dead Kennedys, or the Sex Pistols, you're probably a good candidate for appreciating this album. The vocals are unorthodox to say the least. Most of the lyrics are in Japanese, or English, and all of them are either spit or screamed.
Every chord, piano gliss, drum beat, and jubilant yell is absolutely bursting with lightning-energy. The 5, 6, 7, 8s remind me of a female, Japanese version of the Kingsmen (Louie, Louie). They play dirty, loud, fun garage rock with the occassional rip roaring surf tune.
If you have ecletic tastes, this is a good band to pick up. If you like sugary pop or strictly mainstream music, then you'll probably think this band is full of no-talent hacks. You'd be wrong, of course, but you'd still have felt like you wasted money.
If you're crazy enough to embrace this kind of music, but don't think it goes quite far enough, give Guitar Wolf a try. They hold the record for the loudest band in the world, and they're a crazy Japanese punk band.
FANTASTICO!!.......2004-07-07
I HAVE YET TO PURCHASE THIS CD BUT I KNOW ITS GONNA BE FRICKEN FANTASTIC!!
I SUGGEST EVERYONE GO OUT AND BUY THIS CD EVEN THOUGH I HAVE NOT PURCHASED IT PERSONALLY.
THEY ROCK MY SOCKS!!!!!!!!!
NOW I NEED A FRICKEN CIGARETTE

Great CD! .......2007-02-12
I love all of the songs on the CD minus 2 of them... But all in all, instrumentally, the CD is very good. I love the lyrics also! Good job Pleneros!
Excellent, highly recommend.......2005-04-27
I had the pleasure of meeting Los Pleneros at Rutgers in 1995 and I was immediately hooked. While Bomba and Plena music is lots of fun all on its own, this group takes it to another level. I can't seem to keep my Puerto Rican hips still when this CD is playing. If you ever get the chance to catch one of their performances, I guarantee you won't be sitting down for long, they'll make sure of that!
Puerto Rican Roots.......2000-07-19
If you haven't encountered Plena before, one of the great musical traditions of Puerto Rico, this album is a great place to start. It's a beautifully conceived project wonderfully well executed. Be prepared to hear great soulful vocals with terrific folky arrangements.
Somos Boricuas.......2000-04-19
This is an amazing CD. When I first discovered it a few years ago, I felt like I found something antique and valuable. I still feel that way. The most interesting cut on the CD is "Tilin", which almost any African American raised on the East Coast will recognize from Sunday school as "He 'Rose". Whether the tune came from Africa to both Borinquen and the States,or the early Puerto Rican migrants brought it to the States where it was adapted by African Americans, it shows a clear overlap of cultures. The CD should be your first purchase, if you're interested in learning about bomba y plena.
Thr essence of Puerto Rican Music.......2000-04-05
This album is one their best. Especially their fine tribute to a true "son" of Puerto Rico Pedro Albizu-Campos. One of the islands most vocal leaders/statesman. Who voraciously fought for Puerto Ricos Independence, during the the early part of the 20th century. The albums beautiful blends of "Bomba y Plena" help mark the islands unique folklorical history and music. The album is a real joy to listen too.

Customer Reviews:
THE BEST AUDIO VERSION AVAILABLE.......2007-02-23
In 2006, the first five CB titles were issued in Japan, on the Bomba label, in this LP-replica mini-sleeve CD format:
COLD BLOOD - BOMBA BOM24086
SISYPHUS - BOMBA BOM24087
FIRST TASTE OF SIN - BOMBA BOM24088
THRILLER - BOMBA BOM24091
LYDIA - BOMBA BOM24092
The audio mastering on those discs are all superior to their Collectables/domestic counterparts.
If you really love these CB albums, get these Japanese releases before they are sold out, as all mini-sleeve CD's are limited edition.
They are certainly more expensive than the domestic CB titles, but are definitely worth the price.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Seis Corrido Style of Bomba... .......2007-02-12
Most of this Bomba is in the style of Seis Corrido, which is the traditional style of Bomba from Loiza, preserved over the centuries by the Ayala Family. (My grandma comes from that town and has that last name... I wonder if we're somehow related... ? Would be interesting..)
Bomba de Loiza--Hermanos Ayala.......2006-07-09
For those that don't know, Bomba is a Puerto Rican music and dance form with it's roots in Africa. It is characterized by specific rhythms played by three barrel-shaped drums called "barriles" and backed up by a piece of wood struck with drum sticks (the "cua") and a marraca. What makes the dance so special is the fact that the solo dancer, which can be male or female, interacts with the lead drum and actually controls the drum with his or her movements. While obviously, you can't see the dance in an audio performance, if you listen carefully to this recording you can hear the solos and imagine what the dancer is doing.
Loiza is a town in Puerto Rico that is treasured and respected for its preservation of the African folk arts. Before a highway and a bridge made it relatively easy to get to, Loiza was geographically isolated, there was limited influence from other cultures and art forms dating back to the time of slavery were nurtured and developed, making Loiza a cultural reference point for all of Puerto Rico.
While Bomba is danced in several parts of Puerto Rico, the Bomba of Loiza is distinct. It is characterized by a very fast and dynamic pace, with some movements that are not found in other places.
The Ayala family is widely recognized as the lead group in presenting the Bomba of the Loiza...hence the cd's title. The liner notes, which are in Spanish, explain that the Ayala family became a professional performing group 40 years ago. This cd is the real thing, produced for a discerning and knowledgeable audience. Do not expect to hear salsa or any form of commercial Latin music. This is a high energy, fast-paced performance from start to finish, with a good selection of classic Bomba songs.
This is a "must have" for serious collectors of Bomba music. It's a wonderful recording. Que viva la Bomba!
This compilation is SMOKING!.......2005-06-29
This bomba compilation is the real thing... fast-paced, extremely rich in the drum section, quite solid in the chorus response. Should anyone need a primer on Afro-Puerto Rican music, this may be the place to start. Another alternative would be any production by another Loiza native, William Cepeda (who played trombone with Dizzy Gillespie, among others), or Raices, a CD/DVD documentary produced by Puerto Rico's Banco Popular
Fast Bomba de Loiza.......2005-01-26
I try to return again and again to this record, just to try to understand it. Out of due respect. Unfortunately the feeling is the same. This bomba style of the Ayala has a default: Too many drums! It may look very nice live, but when you get too many drums in the studio, it sounds like cats and dogs. This last time I listened to the recording I found some jewels. Even though the rhythm is the same monotonous fast machine-gun shooting through the C.D., some of the melodies if turned into the Cangrejero style ( Bomba from Santurce)would sound much more appealing, because there are less drums, and more variation of rhythms
and the accent is where it should be: The primo drum playing the solo danced by the bombero/bombera.
Just listen to Yuba La malire by the Ayalas and turn to listen to the Cepedas do the same song and judge by yourselves.
As Bomba spreads through many states and even to Europe and as far as China!, guess which is the Bomba style that prevails?:
The Cangrejero style of Santurce, championed by the Cepedas.
Wonder Why?
The difference is that the Loiza style remained provintial in its pattern of rhythms. In the other hand , the Cepeda style of Santurce evolved in the cosmopolitan environment of San Juan. It was influenced by Flamenco forms and figures as well as other forms. It remained purely Bomba, but more international, more "hip", if I dare say...
An another best kept secret is the Bomba Balancé from Mayaguez.
Viento de Agua Unplugged, plays a nice example, "Siré, Siré".
It is worst buying the Viento de Agua Unplugged.
Great Painting.......2003-11-19
By my good friend, Samuel Lind. This music takes me back to when I was in High School at La Escuela Superior Carlos Escobar Lopez, in Loiza. I remeber summer when I would go out and dance bomba all night and get drunk with my friends. Those were the days.

Other recent King's Singers' recordings on this label have reaffirmed the ensemble's credentials as compelling advocates of contemporary music. Here, only the most hardhearted of early music purists could fail to find the infectious cocktail of popular and religious Spanish music--largely 16th century--going to their heads, even if the King's Singers add the occasional theatrical embellishment. The music (much of it by "Anon") is organized into five categories, among them "fire" and "water" (with the alternative implications of ardor and alcohol). Of the named composers, none takes the ear more readily than Mateo Flecha the Elder. His La Bomba, one of several lengthy ensaladas (miniature music dramas), steals the show, with its comic tale of a bunch of sailors' impassioned but shallow prayer for deliverance from shipwreck. Elsewhere the moods range from pious to bitter-sweet melancholy--and just try to keep your feet still in villancicos such as Rodrigo Martinez. Those familiar, warm Harp Consort textures contribute markedly to the overall richness of sound. --Andrew Green

Outstanding.......2007-03-10
This is an extremely fun vocal Cd with really great arrangements. I thoroughly enjoy it and bought copies for all of my family too.
The King's Singers work their magic again.......2006-01-28
Having been a fan of the King's Singers since my teenage years, which are growing ever more faint in my memory, I am sometimes surprised that they still surprise me. And yet, they always do. There is something quite magical about their voices - not just their individual voices, which are all wonderful, but what happens when you put them all together - the whole is definitely greater than the sum of the parts. They have hit upon a great formula, which will hopefully be around for many more wonderful recordings.
The other thing I love about the KS is how well they do different styles of music. Their technique on this is superb - the pronounciation, the intonation, all of it is right on the money. Yet they also manage to "take off the viking hat" (as my choral director likes to say when we're switching styles) and do the Beatles without butchering them. It's really quite something to behold.
This CD is a great introduction to the classical side of the KS, and a definite must-have for any current fan. The pieces are beautiful and exciting, they all complement each other wonderfully, and the whole thing is just a joy to hear!
PERFECT INTERPRETATION.......2005-03-06
I am a fun of Spanish Renaissance Music and I found this recording extremely good! King's Singers shows their abilities once again!
Fabulous!.......2001-01-05
I am a huge fan of Renaissance music, and I have to say, this recording is truly outstanding! The blend, dynamics, style and tone really need to be heard to be appreciated. The addition of the Harp Consort to this already superlative group also gets a big "thumbs up" from me. And Stephen Connolly! Oh, be still my foolish heart!! What a voice! The most resonant I can remember hearing! The selections by Mateo Flecha will make you laugh out loud, but my personal favorite - at least, for the moment - is "Aleph, quomodo sedet sola civitas" by Padilla. The extremely musical performance and the chill-producing display of dynamics makes this piece sound like it is performed by a choir of many more than six! I highly recommend this CD to all who appreciate quality music.
Great fun!.......2000-04-07
This disc is the king'singers' second release with the current lineup (Hurley, Short, Phoenix, Lawson, Crouch, and Connolly) and is in my opinion the better of the two. Paul Phoenix, k's tenor, has told me that he much prefers the blend and sound on this disc to that of Street Songs. The singing is superb, and is ably supplemented with the playing of the Harp Consort. This disc is also great fun to listen to! You will be pleasantly surprised by the variety of textures heard here. The disc starts out with a solo track by 2nd baritone Gabriel Crouch, and also includes small-group tracks as well as full-roster pieces. Anyone who has caught their April 2000 tour has likely heard "La bomba" by Mateo Flecha, recorded on here. It is obvious that the k's had great fun making this recording! Enjoy!
