5 out of 5 stars Pre-Willy: The Authentic Julio.......2000-09-04

Here is the heart-healing voice of the young Julio before the US discovered him--before Willy Nelson, before the perma-tan, before the over-orchestrated cheese. You can still imagine the timid young soccer star wannabe who took up guitar while an injury healed. Wish you could all have experienced the excitement of discovering Julio when he was still a $4 ticket playing hotel ballrooms (he was already the biggest seller in Europe and Latin America)and the gratitude he showed audiences in those days.

5 out of 5 stars Pifarro's Best Album!.......2003-07-08

Although Pifarro has released some wonderful stuff in the past couple of years, "Los Ministriles" is still, in my opinion, their best offering to date. Simply, this recording is a delight, and although I've heard it dozens of times, it always remains fresh and enjoyable upon each re-aquaintance. There is something about music from the Spanish renaissance that sets it apart from almost anything being written in Europe at the time, and Pifarro captures the fun, spontanaity and pure beauty that this music exudes from note one. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, syncopated music from Piffaro, the Renaissance Band........2002-11-25

The full title of this album is "Los Ministriles: Spanish Renaissance Wind Music", and it features a wide variety of genteel and folksy tunes that would have been played by multi-instrumentalist minstrels employed by the nobles and clergy of the time. Originally founded in 1980 as the Philadelphia Renaissance Wind Band, Piffaro took its current name from the Italian version of "Pfeifer", or piper. And indeed, this group boasts a wide variety of wind instruments: entire families of shawms, recorders and crumhorns; along with sackbuts, a bass dulcian and various bagpipes; accompanied by Spanish essentials such as harp, vihuela, guitar and percussion. The lively and intricate syncopation of Renaissance Spanish compositions lends a distinctive character to this CD in comparison with the group's other releases, which are also very good. Try their Flemish and German recordings too--"A Flemish Feast: Flemish Renaissance Wind Music" and "Stadtpfeiffer: Music of Renaissance Germany".

5 out of 5 stars Renaissance Music is Anything but Boring!.......2000-03-20

I will admit an immediate bias for this recording, as my Renaissance Music instructor's husband is one of the players. However, leaving that fact out entirely, this disc, like all of Piffaro's recordings, is a joy. I listen to them everywhere, especially when I need to stay awake on long drives. To hear such difficult ensemble instruments as shawms, krumhorns and recorders in a resonant environment, played perfectly in tune is rare. This particular disc ranges from organ-like works for recorder consort to rousing dances like ¡Si abrá in este baldres! Unlike CDs that contain lengthy masses with no lighter interludes (although these are equally gorgeous, especially the Gabrielli Consort's Moralès Mass for the Feast of St. Isidore), Piffaro's CDs are widely varied in terms of instrumentation, style, tempo and inflection. I have played this for many people who claim to not like early music and have had much favorable response, not to mention the personal enjoyment and sheer fun!

4 out of 5 stars Fun music.......1998-11-21

Much of this CD is typical Renaissance music with period instruments: a delight to listen to, but sounding a lot like other Renaissance delights. What I found really unique is that this is the first selection of Renaissance music which I'm familiar with that includes bagpipes among the instuments. Crumhorns and sackbuts are nice but familiar; the bagpipe selections blew me away.

4 out of 5 stars Un buen cambio.......2003-04-19

5 out of 5 stars La Guzmán is back with a vengeance!!.......1999-03-19

When some Mexican friends of mine gave me this CD I didn't know exactly what to expect, since Alejandra's previous album 'Enorme' was a bit of a disappointment. But on this disc she has changed her usual team of collaborators, this time mainly working with Spanish musicians and songwriters, and to say the least 'Cambio de Piel' blew my socks off! It's by far her most consistent effort - there is not one poor track to be found. Ace drummer Pedro Barceló's dynamic playing and the raw guitar and bass parts are a pure pleasure, and Ale herself sounds as if she's been reborn. The highlights (hard to choose!) are the uptempo 'Guerra Fría', 'Toda La Mitad', and 'Buscando Tu Amor' and the slower songs 'Ven' and 'Como Las Nueces'. This album didn't leave my CD player for days after my first listen. It's so uplifting and full of energy. Simply brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Classical Mariachi.......2001-01-25

It is never wise to judge a CD by it's cover. Alejandro Fernandez is simple a talented singer. He displays his talent in wonderful songs such as, "Piel de Nina", "No Estoy Triste", "Cenizas", "Hasta Donde Estes", "Metira, Metira", "Contigo Aprendi", and "Si No Eres Tu", among others. Well-rounded production, and a must for those "El Potrillo" listeners.

5 out of 5 stars maravilloso !.......2000-08-19

The 2nd release from the magnificent Alejandro, when he was 22, is wonderful. My favorites are "Cenizas", "Contigo Aprendi", and "Si No Eres Tu", but every track is excellent, with his glorious voice, passion and soul filling each song with life and beauty. I recommend getting this as part of the set "Mis Primeros Exitos". You'll get his first 3 recordings, individually wrapped, in a nice box, "A La Manera", his 3rd CD, is extraordinary, and shouldn't be missed !

4 out of 5 stars Excellent and underappreciated - One of his best.......1999-05-22

For whatever reasons (maybe the cheesy cover photo?) This album isn't one of Alex' that gets much attention, but it should. Sr. Fernandez actually outdoes Javier Solis with his interpretation of "Mentira." As on all of his albums, the instrumental accompaniment and arrangements are top-notch. This is a very smooth and romantic listen. It's amazing how strong and confident Alex' voice is here; He was in his early 20's when this was recorded, but his mastery of technique, epecially the way he conveys emotion and meaning with the lyrics sound more like the accomplishements of an artist at their peak. I know persons who don't speak a word of Spanish who have been seduced by the power of the voice alone. This is a natural and gifted talent. If you like Alejandro, you should have this album. If you haven't heard him yet, get "Que Seas Feliz" first, but do buy this one if you like that one.

It's perhaps fitting that a Chilean exile living in Paris for thirty years should paint such a sweeping musical picture of all of Latin America. Mariana Montalvo, whose sensuous voice invites comparisons to the legendary Argentinian Mercedes Sosa, stays firmly within the traditions of nuevo cancion--a Latin American musical style founded in part by Sosa in the 1960s that fused indigenous South American music and poetry in a brilliantly varied, lyrical style. But on Piel De Aceituna, Montalvo shows just how sprawling the nuevo cancion style can be--jumping from the reggae of "Sud Americano" to a gorgeous vocal duet with the Congolese singer Lokua Kanza on "Encuentro" that hints at Cuban son to a reworking of Frenchman Jacques Brel's "La Cancion de los Amantes," complete with accordion and violin. Through it all, Montalvo's voice is enthralling, breathing life into adaptations of Latin American poetry and to her own magical, passionate songs. --Ezra Gale

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Social conscious meets Paris style vocals.......2004-11-18

Mariana Montalvo, like the singer/songwriter Victor Jara, was part of the Nueva Cancion movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Like so many of her contemporaries, she left Chile when the Pinochet dictatorship took over, settling in Paris where a smoky ballad style already had an influence on her vocal style.
Mix the serious social conscience of the Nueva Cancion with the style of Paris made famous by Edith Piaf and others, and you get a type of singing and songwriting totally unsuitable for dancing or raucous behavior - hence my love for the rousing title cut.

It's hard to put a finger on the mercurial muse of Spanish chanteuse Martirio and guitarist/producer Raúl Rodríguez on Flor de Piel, her second domestic effort for Sunnyside. Much like they did on her exceptional debut, Mucho Corazon, the two (and their crew of backing musicians) make musical ports of call to Spanish and Portuguese cities throughout Europe and the America and bring a bouquet of influences onboard. Thus flamenco gracefully mixes with son, fado with bolero, café music of the city with traditional music of the provinces. Martirio navigates these shifting waters with grace, using her husky voice and Rodríguez's guitar work as the unifying force within the music. Highlights include the clever jazzy styling on "Alma Mía," the stripped-down and plaintive closer "Las Simples Cosas," and the fiery flamenco "Si Me Pudieras Querer." While the field of well-turned-out torch singers is a crowded one, here's a singer that deserves some time in the spotlight. --Tad Hendrickson

      5 out of 5 stars A turning point.......2007-07-04

A beautiful album. This album is like a turning point in Serrat's career; the days of "Mediterraneo" and "Senora" have past, his voice here is more grave and mature, the lyrics so deep as always have been, the musical arrangements are redefining his personal style up to this point and from now on Serrat sounds different. This is one of the most forgiven Serrat albums, but deffinitevely beautiful - a most have for any music and poetry lover.

5 out of 5 stars Lucero related to the movie Il Postino- What a nice surprise.......2006-08-28

The other day I was watching the Italian movie "Il Postino" and the musical score there reminded me about a song that I had previously listened but didn't exactly remembered where. It wasn't until I heard Lucero's song "Una Vez Mas," contained in the CD "Piel de Angel" that I was amazingly surprised of the great quality of song that Lucero recorded and her beautiful voice. The song "Una Vez Mas" was adapted from the movie I mentioned and I want to say that, in my opinion, it is one of the best songs I have heard from Lucero. I have liked "No me hablen de el," Veleta," "Los Parientes Pobres," Sobrevivire," "Te Extraño Tanto," "Como Perro Al Sol," "Palabras," "No te Enamores de un Perdedor," and others but sincerely "Una Vez Mas" is by far the best Lucero's song I have listened to. In addition, that song is also included in her "Lucero en la Mexico Live Concert" and I have to say that with the live music on and the public as back up the song is a masterpiece. Great Work Lucero!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars the most beautiful angel i have ever heard.......2000-06-19

lucero has one of the most beautiful voices i have ever heard "piel de angel" has to be her best work yet first time i heard the title song i fell in love with the maturity and reality of the words and the strong and angelic voice of lucero ,then i heard " quiero " and i just fell to the floor what a beutiful love story and wonderful rithm to this song then i listened to " tacticas de guerra " and what an awsome voice.

She has an extremely beautiful voice, and the tunes are very catchy. Keep up the good work!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Top 40 Contemporary Music From South of Border.......1999-05-17

One of the most enjoyable CDs I have ever owned. Lucero provides her listeners with an outstanding range of songs from upbeat Latin pop, wonderful ballads, and selections infused with a dance beat. The arrangements are well done and solid. Definitely fun to listen to anytime at work or play. If you have not been introduced to Mexican Contemporary Pop Music, this CD is an excellent choice. Lucero has a beautiful voice that will transcend any language barrier and transform you into a listener and fan.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting Renaissance music.......2006-07-03

I saw a performance by the Globe Theatre that included a wonderful 5-piece English Renaissance musical ensemble. I went looking for some music like that --- music that included viols, lute, wind, reed, and percussion instruments. The particular sound wasn't easy to find, despite a plethora of English Renaissance CDs. This album of Spanish music from the 15th and 16th centuries actually came closer to the sound I was looking for. It alternates between haunting minor key melodies --- pavanes and the like --- and faster, livlier dance tunes. They're a wind ensemble, but there's actually a tune for solo lute. A lot of variety in a memorable and reasonably priced CD. I highly recommend it. (Although I hope Piffaro will consider recording a CD of English Renaissance music!)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, as usual........2005-11-16

'Los Ministriles, Spanish Renaissance Wind Music' is, I believe, the Philadelphia band, Piffaro's second or third album and I really find it more enjoyable than their parallel album on Italian Rennaissance music. The instruments are virtually identical, with a fair mix of stringed instruments added to round out the sound, but I really enjoyed the overall listening experience more. So, if you are unfamiliar with this band, get this album before the Italian or French albums.

This is an interesting contrast to the works of Begona Olavide and the Eduardo Paniagua Group' of which Olavide is a member. This Spanish group specializes in Medieval and Renaissance stringed instruments. And, from a purely subjective reaction, I prefer their work to Piffaro. I also think their scholarship is more interesting, but then, they are all Spanish, and Spanish specialists, so that is to be expected.

The visceral preference may be the only one worth banking on.

Worth the money, Olavide and Paniagua may be greater value.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely gorgeous!.......2005-03-21

A magnificent recording with enthralling melodies that will lift up your spirits. The bagpipes and flute pieces are simply wonderful. In quality, variety and every other aspect, Los Ministriles is certainly comparable to "Sinners and Saints", the great amazon.com Renaissance dance music favorite, the only difference being that this CD only contains instrumental music (no songs).

It is just too bad very few people are aware of it.
