beautiful perfomances of exsquisite madrigals.......2005-10-01

The first 3 books of Gesualdo's madrigals don't have the startling chromaticism and the violent rhythmic contrasts of the 5th and 6th books, but they're rich pieces nonetheless and here and there are hints of the over the top imagination of the later works. These performances are characterized by accurate intonation and lovely timbre. This is one of my favorite recordings of Italian madrigals.

Concerto Italiano gives a magnificent performance: the opening of "Hor che'l ciel" is daringly slow and still, only to give way suddenly to the narrator's cries of torment; "Ardo, avvampo" proceeds from the thrilling chaos of fire alarms to an extraordinary hush as two tenors end the piece in unison. In the famous "Lamento della ninfa," the musicians have found a way to follow Monteverdi's instructions that the three men should sing in strict tempo ("following the hand"), while the solo soprano nymph sings her lament in freer time, "following the heart." This is my absolute favourite CD of all time, though I own the Italian version and not the Spanish one. I listen to Una Parte Di Me ALL the time and I haven't gotten tired of it yet. Its so hard to choose a favourite song because they are all SO wonderful! The songs are mature, Nek's voice is even more beautiful than he is - it's so easy to get lost in his music. I don't know what any of the songs mean (I don't speak Italian) but even so they are so charged with emotion that I feel like I can relate to every single track.

1. Contromano - AWESOME!! The first time I heard it, it was stuck in my head for hours ... this song just seems charged with tension

2. Lascia che io sia - if I had to pick a favourite song this would be it. I love the melody line and the guitars in the background give off just the perfect affect.

3. L'inquietudine - just beautiful. This song is soft, wistful, and haunting. Every time I hear it I get the shivers.

4. Notte bastarda - this is one of the more "angry" songs on the album. Its charged with energy and begs to be listened to.

5. Abbraciammi - so quiet and beautiful. This song is filled with longing and tenderness.

6. Darei di piu di tutto quel que ho - this song is heavier than a lot of the other tracks (except Notte bastarda) though it is very uplifting

7. Va bene cosi - this one is also kind of an angry song. Its fast and energetic and has a driving guitar line.

8. Una parte di me - the title track (and the reason I bought the album). It has a lot of emotion and kind of a melt-your-heart sort of melody

9. Non vale un addio - this has some neat background music that gives the song a mysterious sort of flair, even though the melody is rather energetic.

10. Io sono qui - this song is really different (I might also choose this as my favourite if I had to pick). I ablsolutely love the guitar at the beginning and the melody of the verses.

In short, every song on this CD has something to offer ... they're all unique and fun to listen to. Buy this CD - even if you don't understand spanish/italian, you'll feel like you know what NEK is singing about because his voice carries so much meaning and emotion.

This small difference made me buy both versions of the CD (and both versions are incredible; it just is left up to you which one you prefer).

As for the CD:

This is definitely his best album along with the one called `The Best of Nek: L'ANNO ZERO'. It is more matured and simply astonishing. For instance, the second song refers to a relationship that two people have while living at a distance and the problems to overcome; the third song is one of the best ballads I have ever heard and refers to someone who has lost the woman that he loved so much and now it feels as the entire universe falls apart; or song ten refers to the ups and downs of life and to never give up. Well, these were only three of the ten astonishing songs in this album.

Either way, this album has a balanced mix from pop ballads to more `faster' pop songs. As for the singer, alongside with Eros, Laura Pausini and a few others, he belongs to the category of the most known Italian singers in the international scene (something you will also realize very soon when you listen to this album).

As for the album: Highly recommended!!!

But be aware: The CD is about 37 min. long.

this cd was probably one of the best cds i've ever heard. This guy is good both in spanish and italian, i didn't really know who he was until i heard the cd las cosas que defendere (which is also good) even though i have the spanish copy i would still like to get the italian version because the songs lascia che io sia and notte bastarda sound excellent in their original version (even though they sound great in spanish too). in my opinion this cd is a must have.

What can I say? The arias are executed neatly and artistically, with the perfect blend of orchestra and voice. Ms. Vaness is my favorite soprano; her voice has a beautiful tone, but is very controlled- no wailing or warbling like other sopranos (infinitely superior to the much-overrated Kiri Te Kanawa). The quality of her voice is like a creamy blend of mint and dark chocolate, but the chocolate is neither bitter, nor overly sweet. Too bad she's not in more recordings. Buy this one while you can!

Beautiful Singing.......2006-08-04

Refreshing and Surprising!.......2006-11-24

I would strongly recommend this collection to anyone who is seeking a new approach and sound world for these Mozart operas. Ostman opts for brisk tempi and transparent textures, but hardly ever at the expense of characterization or expressivity. The singers respond to the challenge with performances that bristle with excitement and fun. The cast blends with the orchestra like a chamber music ensemble, inspiring the listener to experience the opera as a conversation between the text and the intimations expressed in Mozart's musically and psychologically penetrating orchestration. Occasionally one may miss the lyric line and warmth associated with such great Mozart conductors as Bruno Walter or Karl Bohm; but the brio, virtousity, and brilliant insights of Ostman compensate with different kinds of rewards. Also, there is an intimate atmosphere in these recordings that is most faithful to the ethos and meaning of the libretti themselves. After listening to this period approach, my understanding of Mozart has changed radically, and I continue to relish the challenge that these performances have given to my interpretative sensibilities.

First of all, I must state first that I was ANXIOUS to write this rave review. Ever since I got these cd's and realized the treause that is to be found in these recordings I just couldn't wait until I'd had the chance to tell everybody else about it... I honestly believe these recordings should be heard by anybody who is interested in this repertoire and music in general, since this are also some of the most perfect pieces of music in the repertoire.

As for the music itself, I am not going to write about. I think it is enough to read my last sentence to realize exactly what I think about it - and it is really just a must. That's composition taken to the highest possible level.

What I do want to write is about the performances.
Arnold Ostman, not the most known figure in the musical world, (not even amongst musicians- I come from Juilliard, and that name is definitely not one everybody knows) has created in the 80's in Mozart the equivalent of what Harnoncourt and Gardiner have done in Bach performance practice, i.e. has totally changed the conecption which was assimilated into everybody's mind regarding notions about how music of that era should sound like.

Trying to create a performance experience which emulates Mozart's period performance practice he changed everything starting from tempos, through ornamentation and of course- the voices themselves.

For us, most people indoctrinated by the post-romantisicm eastablished especially by Herbert von Karajan and the ilks of him, the first initial response will be a shock. The almost imperceptible swift tempos, the small voices etc. are sure to knock over anybody who haven't heard these recordings before. It might create an intial negative response but hang-on there, as the result is so much more gratifying then of hearing a recording of Karajan, Giulini, Furtwangler or any GREAT other conductor from that era- They were obviously incredible musical figures, but in terms of style and total perception of the piece it just doesn't work on the same level, in Mozart of course. (You'd still want to keep your Furtwangler's ninth copy...)

What is so great about Ostman is the freshness of mind with which he walks into every piece. Just like a real iconoclast
it seems as if he has landed from an entire different planet, and is just coming to conduct these pieces and give their debut. I can't give a more sincere and true compliment than that, musically speaking.

The results are the most fresh interpretations up to date of Mozart most important operas which also derive from some of the best vocal performances I have ever heard.
Under Ostman's direction it seems as though all the singers bloom and give their most musical and inspired performances,
holding on under the swiftest tempos in an admirable way. There is no point in pointing out names because it is as in a rule that the performances are just stellar one by one, even though not carrying around sometimes the most famous names.

This is not to say that all of the recordings in this set are equally perfect, and that I agree to all of the interprations and the insights given by Ostman, but you can't disregard the feeling that he knew EXACTLY what he wanted and executed it almost flawlessly. (the one exception might be small part of Cosi, mainly the overture, which was recorded very early in the stages of period instruments playing- therefore not always as perfect as you would have liked to hear it, but the performance as a whole is still the most beautiful Cosi I know.)

As for the packaging itself: The price is a complete steal, (incredible especially if you order it through other sellers, got mine for about 40$). What you DON'T get are the librettos, so you'd HAVE to get them from a different source. Either a different recording you might have, (you just might want one of the standard reference recordings one usually hears about like Giulini's) or you could just buy the librettos through Amazon, would still cost you very little.

Should not be missed by any terms by anybody who cares for music.

Best ever!!.......2004-01-12

Ostman created a stir when he made these recordings in the 1980s. And now it available in a collectors' edition box. I'm so excited. Sumi Jo's Queen of the Night here is even better than her recording for Solti. Ostman's Don Giovanni is the fastest I've ever heard, not to mention the most exciting. This Cosi Fan Tutte is Gramophone's reference Cosi. And this Figaro has many "alternative" arias that other recordings never bother with. Don't worry, the alternative is at the back so you can program it out. In fact, this is the only set of Mozart operas with ALL the alternative arias available. Even Gardiner does not have some of these. So this is a supreme set of importance.

they're at it again!.......2001-08-07

The players here (also known as Unicorn and Oni Wytars) are among the very few truly brilliant early music performers. Not for them the dry, desiccated path of passionless scholarship! Unlike almost every other instrumental early music ensemble (and I've surveyed a LOT), they display fully engaged, scintillating musicianship at every turn. Their unconventional performance decisions tend to cut them out of critics' golden lists -- most of this music shouldn't really be considered authentically presented -- but such objections go lame and impotent before the vivacity and improvisational panache saturating this CD...along with their MANY others!

One of my favorite cancioneros ,and one that I recommend to all.It is performed on period instruments,and it contains romances,songs from about the times of the "reconquista",instrumental pieces, pieces for viols, and solos for vihuela. One of my favorite pieces of this is track 14 Danza Alta by Francisco de la Torre,it's an intrumental piece for viols and recorder.This music that was performed at the court of King Don Fernando de Aragon.It is hard of finding recordings of Cancioneros at budget price so take advantage of this one...It's really good

Another 4 stars, though I don't share the reviewer from Australia's reservations about the lack of rasp in the singing. Who really knows how these notes were sung? It's a matter of personal preference. Alround a very good recording but not "the definitive" version of these songs (we may never have that). There is a companion disc by Wimmer : Early Music - Sephardic Romances which, like this one, has Spanish texts and English translations. (Naxos) 553617.

There is also another recording of similar material on Naxos : Royal Songbook, by Thorby and Musica Antiqua London - but that is marred by lack of texts or translations. (Naxos 553325)

Some very lively and lovely music.......1999-02-28

After centuries of Arabic and Jewish influence, the new music of Spain born at the court of Ferdinand and Isabella had all the strength of European melody with all the richness of rhythm and chromatic freedom of Northern Africa and the East. The performances by Ensemble Accentus do full justice to this music - largely because it and its director, Thomas Wimmer, have delved into and brilliantly performed the Jewish Sephardic music of old Spain. My only complaints are that there is not enough music here by Juan del Encina; and the singers do not understand the texture of old music. Most singers strive for purity and smoothness of voice and register, but the Renaissance loved loud, deep, rich, overtoned and raspy voices: voices with the sting of crumhorns and hurdy-gurdies. Here we hear some of the instruments played well, but not the larynxes which should accompany them. Nonetheless, a valuable and enjoyable CD for any fan of this era. [SW]

Italian Soprano Renata Tebaldi was One of the Most Important Post-war Sopranos to Tackle a Wide Range of Puccini Roles, and During the 1950s She Recorded Several Complete Opera Recordings. Some of the Operas were Recorded Twice — in Mono and Then in Stereo. Amongst Those which Tebaldi Committed to Disc in the Recording Studio on Two Occasions Must Be Included La Bohème and Madama Butterfly. Excellent introduction to Tebaldi's art.......2005-09-29

This set covers the entire productive years of Tebaldi's recording career. Turandot, Butterfly and Boheme are from her earlier career while Tosca is from her later career. Since this Tosca recording is now out of print and is somewhat hard to find, this recording itself almost worth the cost of the set. In Turandot, you will find Tebaldi at her fresher voice, lovely and melting. Eventhough I would still rate Callas' first recorded Tosca as my first choice, this Tosca comes very close. Enjoy.

To say that these 12 disks contain some of the finest singing ever committed to disk is no exaggeration, but a simple statement of fact. Historical fact. In the 100 years (more or less) that Puccini operas have been around, only a few sopranos in each generation have been the equal of Renata Tebaldi. One cannot objectively say that anyone has surpassed her. Some opera lovers find her peerless in many of these performances. Personal tastes in singers vary, but no one ever sang these roles better. Few anywhere nearly so well. There is not a single note on any of these recordings that is not heartfelt to the core of her being. Like Maria Callas and Franco Corelli, she was luminous, gargantuan in her talent that personified an age. This is one of the great compilations.
