Great choral music CD.......2007-01-26
This CD is excellent - a "must have" for every collection. Beautiful voices, relaxing music.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-01-08
The pieces on these two discs are taken from over fifteen years of recording by the Tallis Scholars, startng with the now-famous recording of Allegri's 'Miserere' from 1980. Allegri lived well into the Baroque era, dying in 1562, Therefore, he did not write the 'Miserere' in renaissance polyphony; and his chordal structure leaned toward the Baroque.
Victoria's 8-part 'Ave Maria' and Palestrina's 'Sicut lilium' are both pieces iln a contemplative mood, the first making direct reference to the Virgin Mary, and the second indirect reference to her via the poetry of the 'Song of Songs'. The remaining selections on Disc l, maintain the consistent, intense sonority of Flemish polyphony.
Disc 2 falls into two parts. The pieces by Sheppard, Tallis,White and Cornysh come from the first half of the sixteenth century and are part of the 'English School' of writing. Here the music is made up of long lines, more notes than syllables, with the emphasis on the part-writing and not the harmonic background.
The second part of Disc 2 is Byrd's five-part Mass, which was written in the 1590's for a recusant Catholic community. Byrd's music has drawn closer to the Flemish style; that is imitative voice parts, largely syllabic in setting with the occasional examples of word-paintings, and the voice parts closer together. But the mood has a different intensity than the writing on Disc one; darker and more questioning. Never was polyphony more passionate than in Byrd's masses,of which the five-part is the crowning achievement.
The members of the Tallis Scholars vary from year to year, and the list of participating singers is included in the accompanying booklet; but it does not tell you which singers are singing each year. That bothered me somewhat because I like to know to whom I am listening specifically. It does mention, however, that the solo group in Allegi's 'Miserere' is Alison Stamp (treble), Michael Chance (countertenor) Jane Armstrong and Julian Walker.
The recording is outstanding in every way. Perfect balance between the voices, perfect emotional investment, flawless dicton and the most beautiful vocal sounds you will ever hear; just Two and One-half hours of pure pleasure!!!!!
Lovely!!!.......2006-06-02
This set of CDs is truly wonderful. I am fond of sacred choral music and purchased the CD mostly to obtain the recording of Gregorio Allegri's "Miserere Mei." This song alone is worth buying the set. I heard it live by an excellent college choir in my hometown and immediately set out to find the best recording of it. Most buyers recommended this recording over the others. (By the way "Miserere Mei: by Gregorio is hard to find.) Additionally the other songs are also so relaxing, flowing, and meditative. I will be honest . . .the Tallis Scholars sing well but not as flawlessly as the Cambridge Singers. You will note that not every consanant is hit in unison, but this is not overly disturbing. (Still that is the only reason for giving four stars instead of five.) The sound is still lovely and the songs gorgeous. In Media Vita is another gorgeous song (first on second CD). If you haven't heard it, I'm sure you'll love the flowing melody!
Beautiful, but a little cold.......2006-02-06
The Tallis Scholars are the zenith of this type of singing, but sometimes they lack the vocal warmth that they probably could achieve if they were guided to do so. Still, this is a great CD, and even better for the 2 CDs of fine and uplifting singing.
The Greatest Hits of a Pioneer Ensemble.......2005-09-27
For years, Tallis Scholars have been quietly revolutionizing our recovery of sacred music. This is their "greatest hits" collection and quite great indeed. The Miserere which begins the set is alone worth the price of the set. The only fault with it is that it is so startling, so obviously genuine, that you will still be hearing it as you play through the rest of the set. The Scholars' ongoing recovery project only proves how integral music is to the human psyche, how essential the sacred is to basic human sanity. And how the severence of the two in the public space and the popular imagination -- the sacred from music -- has severely damaged us all en masse.

Transcendant spiritual beauty.......2007-05-19
After arriving at the end of this astonishing CD, any critical objectivity was swept away by the sheer transcendent quality of these performances. One need not be religious to understand something out of the ordinary is happening here. This was recorded in London in between performances in France and Spain where the choir hiked from town to town and performed the program in abbeys and churches, ending with a performance in the Cathedral of Santiago de Campostela.Surely the memories of those churches, their extraordinary spiritual qualities and acoustics, remained in the singer's ears and hearts during this recording session. So much of it is so beautiful, with the motet 'O Maria vernans rosa' by Clemens non papa being for me the highlight. It is hard to imagine anything more transcendant than the soaring treble lines and prismatic harmonies in that music. All that is missing are the candles and the incense. Glorious!
More Gardiner than "Renaissance", but nonetheless undeniably vivid..........2007-01-22
In his first non-Bach recording for the Monteverdi Choir's own 'Soli deo gloria' label, John Eliot Gardiner presents a sublime programme of works from the 12th-16th centuries inspired by the renowned Santiago pilgrim route. If the CD does not quite surpass the Monteverdi Choir's 2005 recording of similar music ('Santiago a cappella', Universal/Emarcy 0028947630104), it is still by any account a magnificent achievement. The performances exhibit both impeccable ensemble and near-faultless intonation, and are beautifully encaptured within a warm and reverberant acoustic. In addition, Gardiner frequently exploits a slow 'tactus' to great effect, resulting in readings which are spiritually charged and spacious (perhaps most obviously in Morales' ubiquitous 'Parce mihi Domine', Mouton's 'Nesciens mater' and Clemens 'O Maria vernans rosa').
If there can be any criticism of the disc, it is that, at times, the towering force of Gardiner's musical personality is perhaps a little too dominant. In his defence, Gardiner makes no pretence that this is anything but a highly idiosyncratic account, a fact as obvious from the presentation (note the CD cover and booklet notes featuring personal reflections from himself [pp.1-2] and members of the choir [pp.34-5]) as from the performances themselves. A number of the interpretations, for example, rely on a rhetorical approach to dynamics and tempo arguably more appropriate to late 16th/early 17th century secular music than 'prima prattica' (and earlier) sacred music, and whilst this musicological liberty is often effective, sometimes it is not. The declamatory 'forte' outbursts of Dufay's 'Rite majorem' are indicative of this over-emphasis on text; similarly the rather organic tempo in Victoria's motet 'O quam gloriosum' sounds a little mannered in places and seems to contradict what is known about tempo in Renaissance music (see below *). Additionally, the choice of forces (see below **) and occasional mannerisms (such as the clipped 'Hosanna' in the Sanctus and Benedictus of Victoria's Mass) are powerfully suggestive of the mixed-voice Cambridge choral tradition of Rutter, Marlow and Brown (Gardiner himself having studied there). And incidentally, why is the Credo from Victoria's Mass silently omitted...?!
If the overall result, then, is really more a personal invitation to Gardiner's insight than an accurate representation of the selected works, this does not detract from the profound and ethereal experience which is created upon listening to this marvellous release. Highly recommended.
(*) It would be dangerous to interpret sources too literally, but it surely significant that contemporary theorists almost consistently relate the tactus to mediums with a regular factor, most commonly the heartbeat (e.g. Ramis de Pareia [1482], Adam of Fulda [1490], etc...), but also breathing (Gaffurius, 1496), walking (Buchner c.1520), etc.
(**) Performance of Iberian polyphony with instruments - rather than 'a cappella' (as here) - is well documented, and Santiago Cathedral itself boasted 4 salaried ministriles from 1539. In Rome too, where Victoria's Mass was published (1583), instrumental participation was common. The English jesuit Gregory Martin, describing music in Roman churches c.1576-8, for example, notes: "...with the Organs a childes voice shriller and louder than the instrument, tuneable with every pipe: Among the quyre, Cornet or Sagbut, or such like above the voices..." (Roma Sancta, 1581, p.96)

Customer Reviews:
Religious Hit Parade.......2002-04-08
I was torn between four and five stars for this album. In the end, it got five because of the inclusion of the two wonderful traditional Jewish songs - "Alvinu Malkeinu" and "Tzadik Katamar". They are the highlights of the disc for me (no, I'm not Jewish, but that doesn't matter) - and really, where else are you going to find this kind of music?
This CD serves the same purpose as a sampler disc - enticing the listener to buy the full works - Handel's "Messiah", Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater", Faurè's Requiem Mass, and what have you. Believe it or not, I had never heard any of "Messiah" - not even the Hallelujah Chorus in its entirety - before I purchased this CD. Now I realize what I've been missing and checked it out from the local library. Ditto for the unearthly beauty of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater" - check out the samples of "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" and "Quae Moerebat" if you don't believe me.
The quality of the performers is excellent, and how can ANYONE pass up that price???? That is what ultimately clinched it at a solid five stars. I consider this CD one of my greatest finds - you will too.
Very uplifting.......2000-05-21
This is a great bargain CD with excerpts from some familiar classics and some lesser known treasures. Many listeners, including myself, will want to own the complete performance of most of these works, but this CD is a good way to hear composers such as Lewandowski and Pergolesi, whose works may not already be a part of your music library. The opening movement of Vivaldi's Gloria as performed by the Atlanta Symphony and Chorus conducted by Robert Shaw is terrific. True to his reputation as one of the greatest choral conductors of all time, everything sounds just right under his baton. The other performances were not as highly distinguished in my humble opinion, but overall most of them were good, and many were excellent. For Handel's Messiah though, I highly recommend Sir Georg Solti conducting the Chicago Symphony and Chorus, starring Kiri Te Kanawa (once you hear the Solti version, most other Messiah performances don't feel as moving). And if you enjoyed this CD, you'll really love Kiri Te Kanawa's Ave Maria album.
Overall, this compilation is a really great selection of powerful, serene, and uplifting music. Some of the other CD's in the 25 Favorites series are not very satisfying, but this one is a real winner!

Beautiful Music Beautifully Sung.......2000-06-20
Victoria is one of the most important composers of the High Renaissance. This recording, made over the space of a year presents two of his most engaging masses in beautiful performances in an appropriately warm acoustic (actually two venues).
This group's approach to musica ficta has not been to smooth out all of the "wrong notes" but to leave many in. The result suggests that their approach is the correct one. The added piquancy of the dissonances only adds to the expressiveness of the music.
English groups have, for years, changed few notes in the music of native Renaissance composers (notably Tallis) and it's good to see them applying the same principles to continental composers.
This recording is the one of the finest Victoria recordings available. It avoids the rather acidic sounding boys of the Westminster Cathedral recordings and the muddy acoustics of many other recordings. Go for it. You won't be sorry if you love Renaissance music.

Heavenly music, perfectly sung.......2003-11-03
A superb selection of some of Renaissance master Palestrina's exquisitely transcendent music, sung to perfection by this 6-man a capella group. Very peaceful, restful, meditative, it's ideal background music for work or home, for any time of day or night. Sublimely beautiful--even moreso than Lionheart's Paris: 1200--with it's rich, shifting, gorgeous harmonies.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent choir; excellent music.......2002-07-30
First, you probably haven't heard of this group, the Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum. Think of them as a midwestern "farm team" for Norman Luboff. The Berkeys, Almeda (the conductor), and her husband Jackson (composer of the title piece) were good friends of Luboff. They lived in Nebraska, and Luboff suggested they create their own choir to do the same kind of music (and have the fun) that Luboff did. The SDG Cantorum was the result.
"Arma Lucis", the title cut of the recording, is a modern, but quite accessible work. Other selections include 5 spirituals, all arranged by Luboff, and a wide variety of other styles, from Lotti's Crucifixus from the early 18th century to a Kyrie by Knut Nystedt (circa 1970), and some early American music thrown in as well ("Chester" from the time of the American Revolution). The selections show off the versatility of the choir. They are well trained, with a solid tone, and are up to the demands of the wide range of music. Bruckner's "Christus Factus Est" and the spiritual "Wade in the Water" are especially thrilling....

A magical experience.......2007-03-06
Words are hardly sufficient to describe the atmosphere that this utterly magical CD produces. "Atmosphere" is hardly the word - "incense filled mist" might be better. The choir of New College, Oxford under the direction of Edward Higginbottom is one of the most respected choirs in the interpretation of Renaissance choral music, and this recording demonstrates why beyond a shadow of doubt. All of the selections on this disc combine perfectly to give an impression of swirling incense, and none more so than Thomas Tallis's undisputed masterpiece "Spem in Alium" for 40-part choir. The choir had to be augmented by some extra trebles and gentlemen in order to handle 40-part division, but the total is certainly greater than the sum of its parts. "Spem in Alium" stretches beyond the mortal into the divine, and the effect is certainly stunning. I would, however, be amiss if I did not give sufficient praise to the rest of the disc. Most of the composers featured are Italian, and their compositions are precisely what one might expect of 16th and 17th century Italian church composers: highly devotional and intense. The choir's impeccably full-throated and fiery tone succeeds in bringing this music passionately and gloriously to life. This is highly recommended!!!

This two-discs-for-the-price-of-one compilation gives a fine overview of the Tallis Scholars' impressive recording career. It opens with the group's signature piece, Gregorio Allegri's Miserere (featuring the remarkably strong and pure high Cs of Deborah Roberts), and continues with a cappella works by well-known Renaissance composers such as Josquin, Palestrina, and Victoria, as well as pieces by lesser-known composers--such as Clemens non Papa, Robert White, and William Cornysh--whose reputation the group played an important part in reviving. Phillips has chosen a particularly beautiful group of pieces, all performed with the reliably immaculate tuning and lovely tone that have made this choir world-famous. Longtime collectors of Tallis Scholars discs probably have most of the works included here already, but for those unfamiliar with the group--or with Renaissance sacred music in general--this 25th-anniversary album is an ideal introduction. --Matthew Westphal
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful collection.......2000-08-05
For me, the Tallis Scholars are probably the finest early music choir in England today. Though the reason for the release of this double CD - their 25th anniversary - has long since passed, it is still worth having in any early music collection, especially if you have never purchased a Tallis Scholars record before.
With so much material to their credit, recorded over many years, Peter Phillips must have had quite a few headaches over which tracks to include. He has opted to present two programmes: disc one opens with the award-winning 1980 recording of the Allegri "Miserere" and goes on to explore Palestrina and masters of Franco-Flemish polyphony, including Josquin and Brunel. Disc two features Renaissance music from England, including works by William Cornysh, John Sheppard, and of course Thomas Tallis. It ends with a stunning rendition of William Byrd's "Mass for Five Voices." Needlessly to say, there are many other gems from the choir's discography that do not appear: "Spem in alium," "Nine Tunes for Archbishop Parker's Psalter," the Sarum "Missa in gallicantu," John Tavener's "Ikon of Light" or any of the Russian motet recordings made in collaboration with him. Nonetheless, the collection is still superb, reflecting the choir's diversity and Peter Phillip's inspired direction.
There are just too many items on this disc to review in their entirety, and in a way it is impossible to single out any particular 'highlight,' although I have to say that items I constantly find myself listening to are the twelve-part Brunel "Gloria" and the Palestrina "Sicut lilium" from disc one, and the Tallis "O Nata Lux," and Cornysh "Ah, Robin! Gentle Robin" from disc two.
Here is some two hours' worth of solid singing, with all the hallmarks one could expect from the Tallis Scholars (represented in their entirety owing to the sampling from several recordings, recent and otherwise). As Phillips muses in the notes, it is staggering to think that what started out as a tiny student-run chamber choir at Oxford University has turned into an award-winning, internationally acclaimed ensemble. Yet, the results are undeniable. There are many specialist early music groups in England - The Sixteen, The Cardinall's Musick, The Monteverdi Choir and many others besides. Fundamentally, however, I believe the Tallis Scholars shine brighter than any of them, and those who doubt it even for an instant should try this wonderful collection. This is music making of the highest standard and I cannot recommend it enough.
Outstanding! Sheer musical poetry.......2000-06-14
Sheer delight! If you're already familiar with the work of the Tallis Scholars, then this 25th anniversary CD will need no recommendation from me at all. If not... then let me just say that this group of singers has not and will not be bettered at this kind of music. Their repertoire is mostly but not exclusively mediaeval, and this CD contains some of their best-known works, in particular their rendition of Allegri's Miserere, in my opinion by far the best version *ever* of this beatiful composition. The pure soprano voices render this piece achingly beautiful. If you don't already have an extensive Tallis Scholars collection, or - like me - want to start replacing your old vinyl collection with CDs, this is an excellent place to start.
Outstanding selection of Tallis Scholars repertoire examples.......2000-02-25
This CD is the definitive Tallis Scholars sampler if one is interested in hearing a varied cross-section of their superb repertoire. The major difference between this collection and the Best of the Renaissance CD is the fact that this CD includes works from no less than 14 composers, and still includes a whole Mass (Byrd's Mass for Five Voices)!
Starting with the opening piece of CD 1, Allegri's Miserere, the other pieces will open to the listener the world of continental Renaissance polyphony - Josquin's Praeter rerum seriem is marvelous, Clemens non Papa weighs in with 2 wondrous pieces, and Brumel's Gloria might rearrange some brain cells if not digested with care - 12 voices!
The second CD is even better (but I am partial to the English school), and Sheppard's Media vita is a masterpiece - it alone makes this collection worth the money! Hearing a fairly rare work from Robert White is also of interest, and the short love song Ah, Robin by Cornysh the Younger is very moving indeed!
If you're unfamiliar with the Tallis Scholars Renaissance music, please listen to this CD. If you're already hooked, please listen to this CD again - the arrangement of the pieces make it a pleasure, even if you know most of these works!
A beautiful collection of their classics - a wonderful buy........1998-11-30
This collection of Renaissance sacred choral music is just wonderful. The fine voices are enhanced by the acoustics in the Merton College Chapel, Oxford. The 2 CD set plays over 2 1/2 hours of Latin polyphony, from the Allegri "Miserere" to beautiful selections by Clemens, Lassus, Tallis, Byrd and others. It is a rare kind of music, both inspiring and calming. The 15 year old and the 50 year old in the family each own a copy.
